The market value of the endowment is over $2 million!

The majority of the growth was through positive market

gains and $81,319 was donated to the endowment. We are

actively building solid relationships with our donors and

supporters to grow the endowment for the benefit of

people living in Revelstoke.

In 2014, the Foundation granted $58,167 to a wide variety

of volunteer groups and awarded $20,375 in scholarships

to Revelstoke students to assist with post-secondary

educational costs. One new scholarship, the Jack &

Florence Carten Bursary was established by the Carten

Family.

The Foundation is the steward for the Success by Six and

Children First funding on behalf of the Early Childhood

Development Committee. The Foundation continues to

administer the Glacier Adventure Stewardship Program

Fund and the Emergency Shelter Fund. The Youth Access

Fund was set up in June 2014 by Community Futures

Revelstoke to be administered by the Foundation to

support youth participation in sports and cultural activities.

Changes to federal not for profit registration prompted the

dissolution of our incorporation with Industry Canada and

re-registration as a BC Society. Our Board of Directors

saw some changes with the resignation of Meghann Hutton

early in 2014 and the appointment of a new City Council

representative Aaron Orlando following the fall civic

elections.

At the annual general meeting held in June 2014, a long

time supporter of the foundation, W. Earl Campbell was

recognized as an honorary director. Mr. Campbell

orchestrated a donation matching campaign to build the

Hillcrest Campbell Award endowment fund. The fund

sits at just over $60,000 that will generate two annual

scholarships for RSS Students of $1,500 ea.

Administrative assistance is contributed by Community

Futures Revelstoke with Debra Wozniak acting as the

society’s support staff. Many thanks to Geoff Battersby

for his continued support with fund development activities

and to Steve Bender as a City Council representative. A

huge thank you to BDO for their ongoing contributions of

financial statement preparation.

Thank you to the people who support the Foundation

through their generous donations that truly make a

difference in our community. It is a gift that keeps on

giving – in perpetuity!

As we approach our country’s 150th birthday, Canada’s Governor General, the Right

Honourable David Johnston, has challenged Canadians to imagine our country as it could

be – a smart and caring nation that holds promise for all.

We invite all residents of Revelstoke to join with us in establishing a Smart & Caring

Legacy Fund for our community in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017. We

welcome any suggestions regarding the creation and focus of this new fund.

Contributions to the Foundation in 2014 amounted to $81,319 bringing the

total contributions to the endowment since inception to $1,639,188. Market

Value of the Endowments Funds at December 31, 2014 is $2,068,804.

In 2014, friends and family members donated in memory and added 14 new

names to the growing list of In Memoriam Donations. Several In Memoriam

donations have become ‘endowed funds’ that give back by way of a bursary or

scholarship to a deserving RSS student attending post-secondary schooling.

What will your legacy be? Do you have a favourite charity that you want to benefit from your generous

support? You may wish to leave something in your ‘will’ that will go towards

a fund that will give back to your favourite charity in perpetuity. The

Revelstoke Community Foundation provides a variety of services to help you

meet your philanthropic needs now and in the future.

For information on making donations, feel free to phone Deb Wozniak at the

Foundation office 250-837-5345, or contact Kevin Lavelle, Geoff Battersby,

Dale Morehouse or any of the other Directors. All donations are fully tax

deductible and there are a variety of ways to give that have very attractive

income tax implications.

BUILDING OUR ENDOWMENT ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Jack & Florence Carten Bursary Fund The Carten family started the Jack & Florence Carten

Bursary Fund in memory of Mrs. Florence Carten (nee

Wyman), a life-long resident who passed away August

2013 at the age of 87. Mrs. Carten was a teacher

throughout her work career. One of her first postings

was at the Glacier Elementary School at Roger’s Pass

where she was the sole teacher for a class of students

from grades 1-7. She would later teach at Selkirk and

Mountain View Elementary Schools.

She married, local born resident, Jack Carten and together they raised two

children (Wayne and Shelley) in Revelstoke. Jack worked for CP Rail for 43

years before retiring in 1985.

As active volunteers, Jack volunteered with the Elks Lodge and Rod and Gun

Club, and Florence with the Rebekah Lodge. During Jack’s membership with

the Elks he attained the position of Exalted Ruler, the highest position of chair

officers in the Revelstoke Lodge.

When asked why they chose to create a memorial scholarship Jack replied: “for

all our lives Florence and I liked to help people and this seemed like the best

thing we could do”. He remarked that Florence had a very fulfilling career as a

teacher and that this bursary could help another person achieve the same. This

year in June the first scholarship will be provided to a graduating student from

Revelstoke Secondary.

GRANT STORIES

Revelstoke Legion gets a New Roof With funding assistance from the Revelstoke Community

Foundation, Revelstoke Credit Union and the Columbia Basin

Trust Community Initiatives Program, the 40 year old roof at

the Legion was replaced. This accomplishment allows the

Legion to keep its doors open and continue to provide

assistance to veterans and their families. Many community

organizations are the recipients of Legion support including

Community Connections Food Bank, Revelstoke Medical

Transportation, Judo Club, Highland Band, Minor Hockey,

Minor Ball, Trees for Tots, Rocky Mountain Cadets,

Pathfinders and Girl Guides.

The Revelstoke Legion Branch 46 was founded in 1926. The

Mission Statement reads: to serve veterans and their

dependents, promote remembrance and act in the service of

Canada and its communities.

Moving Forward Revelstoke Women’s Shelter staff build strong and supportive

relationships with clients during their temporary stay at the

Shelter while fleeing from a violent relationship. Women

learn and practice life skills such as decision making,

budgeting & financial management, nutritional meal

preparation, parenting, time & stress management and leading

a balanced life style. The Moving Forward project allows

staff to continue providing support and mentorship when

women are ready to move out and transition into secure

appropriate housing. Clients are encouraged to engage with

supportive service providers to create a healthy and durable

support network and develop positive relationships.

Revelstoke Museum & Archives Association To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the outbreak of

World War 1, museum staff created an exhibit that deals with

Revelstoke’s involvement in this world event. Over 800 men

and some women from Revelstoke served during this conflict,

and over 100 lost their lives. The exhibit features profiles of

the casualties and shows how the community responded to

support the soldiers through photographs, letters, newspaper

clippings and artifacts.

There have been surprising comments left by people visiting

the exhibit, including several suggestions by children, on ways

to make the world a more peaceful place.

Family Literacy Programs

Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy offers children’s and

family literacy programming in Revelstoke. Activities

include: Mother Goose, Little Goslings Activity Time, Family

Night Out, One to One Children’s Literacy and Volunteer

Training, Parents as Literacy Supporters, Parents of Primary

Students, Roots of Empathy, Story Adventure Kit Lending,

More Books for Community Lending Libraries, Family

Literacy Day Events and

Share the Word Book

Exchange. These

programs provide increased

understanding of various

ways to engage with

children while fostering

their social, language, pre-

literacy and cognitive

skills.

Picture: Books for Babies Event

Since 2005, the foundation has been the steward organization

to receive funding from United Way and the Province of BC

on behalf of the Revelstoke Early Childhood Development

Committee to support delivery of the Children First and

Success By Six programs in Revelstoke.

By working together the Early Childhood Development

Committee has improved access to services; provided parent

information resources, hosted workshops for both parents and

early years service providers; provided support to maintain

vital programs and information services that promote the

importance of the early years; and highlighted the importance

of a family friendly community.

Some of the larger initiatives undertaken by the committee

include playground revitalization projects at Queen Elizabeth

Park, Farwell Park, Columbia Park, Beruschi Park,

Williamsons Lake Park and Big Eddy Park. In 2012, the

Revelstoke Children’s Charter was developed to provide a

common vision to support our community’s children.

IN MEMORIAM DONATIONS

Hunt Family Home Renovation Project

A $5,000 grant was awarded to Habitat for Humanity to

support the installation of an elevator at the Hunt Family

Home. Pauline Hunt has ALS, a progressive and debilitating

disease that causes paralysis. Their home underwent a

complete rebuild in 2013 and the family was able to move in

on December 24. The elevator installation was delayed until

2015. This project was made possible with countless hours of

volunteer work, community donations and the support of

Habitat for Humanity and the Revelstoke Community Housing

Society.

Youth Access Fund

Revelstoke’s Youth Access Fund was established in 2014 by

Community Futures Development Corporation of Revelstoke.

The fund provides a way to ensure all youth have the

opportunity to participate in sports, recreation, art and cultural

programs, events and activities. The Fund is designed to help

remove barriers for youth from low and modest income

families to participate in activities that they would otherwise

not have the opportunity to do. Contact the Youth Liaison,

Megan Shandro, at [email protected] to enquire

about accessing the Fund.

LIVING & GIVING BACK IN REVELSTOKE

Environmental Fund Continues to Grow

The environmental fund now sits at

$34,214 thanks to the continued

support of the TD Bank and local

businesses and citizens. Our goal

is to reach a $50,000 endowment to

support local programs and projects

that help achieve environmental

sustainability in the community.

In 2014 the North Columbia Environmental Society received

a grant from this fund to deliver a series of 12 workshops

about energy conservation, renewable energy technologies,

energy efficient building design and landscaping to minimize

water use.

Coopers Foods Hot Dog Days For two weekends in January 2014, Foundation directors

gathered at Coopers to promote the foundation’s work and

accepted donations for a hot dog and drink provided

complements of Coopers Foods. Many thanks to Coopers for

sponsoring this event to help raise community awareness of

the foundation’s activities.

Southside Community Rewards During the month of May, Southside Food Store participated

in a community rewards program consisting of two hot dog

days and a cash contribution generated from sales of

participating products. The Revelstoke Community

Foundation was delighted to be the chosen recipient of the

community rewards program in 2014.
