Paying homage to Sanderson’s enduring role at the heart of English decor, interior designer and online retailer Lorna Sixsmith picks her favourites from its fabulous Vintage Collection Sanderson Selections 17 munster interiors Sanderson is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year as a successful business that has come through two world wars, survived numerous recessions, received the first Royal warrant for its wallpaper and achieved global renown for its English chintz designs. To mark this milestone, the Sanderson studio has revived some of its most vibrant and varied prints, embroideries and wallpapers. The Vintage collection contains nine wallpapers, nine prints and two embroideries, all derived from Sanderson’s archive of 150 years of design and its collaboration with many talented and innovative designers. Concord is available in six colourways. Originally designed in 1964, it was inspired by the ‘op-art’ movement, an exciting trend based on optical illusions that emerged during the 1960s. Geometric designs are fashionable once again and the optical illusions and metallic element within this design make it a cool, contemporary choice, likely to become popular in halls, dining rooms and ‘masculine spaces‘ this year. WONDERFUL WALLPAPERS Squirrel & Dove Originally designed by CFA Voysey, an associate of William Morris, this wallpaper was launched in the 1890s and is now available as both a fabric and wallpaper. Squirrel & Dove really encapsulates the Arts and Crafts style and embraces the popularity of birds and animals within designs at the moment. It is a calm, peaceful scene, perfect for helping to form a relaxing space within the home Primavera is also very much in vogue. It features rhododendron leaves amongst stylised fruit and flower motifs yet its design has been taken from a hand-blocked wallpaper printed on gold foil dating from 1926. Early Tulips Dating from 1929, this design of bold tulips was originally a printed fabric. The original sample shows a full arrangement of colourful tulip heads painted with a highly textured effect. Now redrawn by the Sanderson studio, it is available as a wallpaper and fabric. FABULOUS FABRICSRoslyn Embroidery William Turner, one of the most eminent designers of the20th Century, first produced Roslyn as a wallpaper design in 1910. It was latermanufactured as a printed fabric from the 1920s. Highly popular, it remainedpart of the Sanderson range until 1974. It has now been re-introduced as awallpaper, a linen fabric and an exquisite embroidered cotton mix fabric. RoslynEmbroidery is my absolute favourite in the whole collection; textured, delicateand beautiful, embroidered with varied stitch effects to recreate the feel of atraditional Jacobean cloth.
Pagoda River Available in four striking colourways, Pagoda Riverwas originally designed in 1910 following the popularity ofChinese and Japanese artwork in Europe during the early 20thCentury. Designs featuring the Orient are very popular onceagain and this fabric is truly evocative and mysterious, particularlyin the vivid red colourway.

The collection is wonderfully varied, depicting styles through the ages, all ofwhich appear equally contemporary today with the focus on flora and fauna,oriental and geometric designs. Most of the designs come in at least fourcolourways with a dominant yellow, red or blue hue. This collection is truly acelebration of Sanderson’s creativity and diversity through the decades.
Tree Poppy The 1920s design Tree Poppy with its Art Decostyle, would have been considered extremely contemporarywhen first produced and that modern quality has beenenhanced in the design today. Stylised oversized flowers andseedheads amongst leaves and branches in vivid colours meansthis is yet another fabulous fabric suitable for curtains andupholstery.
Eglantine is charmingly romantic, yet the blooms are not sosmall as to be considered solely for use in a country cottage.Illustrating rose blooms and branches in a loose painterly style,Eglantine was originally designed as a fabric in 1957 and is nowavailable as a wallpaper as well as in the printed fabric.
