Page 5: Year Book 2012

As we enter our 35th year it is

very pleasing to report on yet

another fantastic year for the

Charollais breed. Membership is

growing at a steady, manageable

pace and importantly more Charollais

rams are being used to produce prime

lambs than at any time in the past.

This is quite an achievement when

you consider the national flock is fairly

stable at the moment. It is

encouraging to witness good quality

rams being so eagerly sought after in

the market place.

In the show ring Charollais more than

held its own with yet again a large

number of interbreed titles being won

at many of the major shows. It is hard

to deny that a well turned out

Charollais in the interbreed is a very

difficult sheep for a judge to ignore.

One of the main events last year was

our 2020 conference where we

brought together a group of farmers

and speakers from within the industry

to give us an honest opinion of where

we stood as a breed and what is

required to continue our growth

towards the year 2020. Some of the

comments should serve as a reminder

that we don’t get everything right and

need to change but the overwhelming

opinion from the meeting was that

Charollais were more than satisfying

the requirements of commercial prime

lamb producers.

The challenges to the farming

industry do not diminish; all too often

we come under a barrage of ‘bad

publicity’ from the media. Thankfully

there are sectors of the press that put

forward a balanced and more

accurate portrayal of all the hard

work, skill and determination we

dedicate to putting food on

consumer’s plates. We, the sheep

industry should be proud of the

significant part we play in bolstering

the UK’s balance of payments. We

are now a net exporter of sheep meat

for the first time in 50 years. The

quality of our prime lamb is very much

pivotal to that success.

As individual breeders we can all do a

bit more to look after our customers to

ensure that what we are selling is

matching requirements. A quick

phone call is all that is needed to a

purchaser of your sheep to see how it

has performed. These calls are

always very much appreciated and

can often result in another sale. This

personal contact is an important part

of marketing our sheep and I am still

amazed at the number of people who

don’t think it is a worthwhile way of

promoting their business.

This coming year we have many

events organised, some will be for

predominately Charollais members

but others will allow us to get out and

meet the commercial flock masters.

For anyone who has spent time on the

Charollais stand at a large event you

will appreciate the number of both

potential and existing customers we

talk to and for me this is the best form

of communication.

I must make mention of Sue Platt who

leaves the Society office after 20 years

of service. Sue has been invaluable in

her help to both myself as Chairman

and the Society in general. We wish

her a long and enjoyable retirement

with maybe the odd race meeting

being taken in.

I look forward to meeting you at some

of the events this year and wish you all

a successful show and sale season.

TULLYEAR Charollais - QYCELEBRATING 26 YEARS OF BREEDING CHAROLLAIS SHEEP

Established in 1986 the Tullyear Flock has achieved many noteworthy successes both in the show ring and the sale ring.

Selective breeding has ensured that our charollais Flock displays the indigenous traits of the charollais Breed and has resulted in

the Tullyear name being synonymous with breeding top drawer charollais sheep.

The UK sheep industry is in a

very good position to take up

the opportunities that the world

market presents us. If the industry

responds in the right way we will all

reap the benefits. As Charollais

breeders we are well placed to meet

the requirements of our customers,

the existing and new purchasers of our

rams have been listening to our

collective message and have

benefitted by using Charollais rams.

All the advantages that Charollais

provide – great tupping ability, very

often influencing an increase in the

number of lambs produced, easy

lambing is the comment that is always

at the front of the list of great

attributes, fast growth, great muscling,

the tendency not to run to fat,

producing lambs for sale all year

round. And what flavour, what

fantastic lamb to eat, the good thing

is that more and more people are

making these complimentary remarks.

So what we are all doing is basically

right, however we mustn’t let our

guard down and continue to be highly

selective, whether we have a handful

or a large flock of Charollais. Sheep

meat is in short supply right across the

world and is likely to remain so for

some time. This position has arisen

because of lack of profitability over

probably 15 or more years. In turn a

reduction in supply and stronger

demand has resulted in higher prices

for prime lamb producers, but our

costs continue to rise. It is possible for

us to spoil this position, both in

commercial lamb production and as

breeders if we do not present to the

market the best possible product.

Our ultimate purchaser, the consumer

of lamb, has a phenomenal choice in

what to purchase as an alternative to

lamb. The Society works with every

possible organisation and individuals

to provide the best information so that

we are in a position to be at the top of

our game. However there are many

elements that are beyond our control,

the weather has been terrible for

many of the later lambing flocks and

for those who have and are still

experiencing the lambing problems

associated with Schmallenberg. They

all have my greatest sympathy and

only time will tell what the picture will

be like when we come round to

lambing again.

New entrants and young people are

essential from both an individual

business and industry perspective. A

fun way of drawing attention to this

whole area is the Young Shepherds

Competition, both regional, national

and international. In New Zealand

last year all the UK competitors

performed extremely well. At a

meeting in April in Southern France, a

new organisation received support

and will be up and running in the not

too distant future.

On a different note, Sue Platt who

has acted as assistant breed secretary

since 1993, is leaving us at the end of

May. She has been a tremendous

attribute to the Society, great fun,

hardworking and talented. We shall

miss her. Sue our thanks for all your

time, effort and hard work. Sue’s

replacement Liz Wright joins us at the

end of May.

I wish all our readers a happy, healthy

and sustainable year.

Newton Farm, near Brecon, Powys is a

family farm, managed by Richard &

Helen Roderick.

They have three sons Andrew 15,

Tudor 14 and Matty 11. Richard

joined the family business in 1984 on

leaving WAC, Aberystwyth. At that

time Newton was 220 acres.

Over time the business has grown and

diversified into a 620 acre mixed

farming unit comprising 70 suckler

cows, 1030 breeding ewes and 55

acres of cereals. Beef progeny are

finished through Celtic Pride or sold in

Brecon Market as forward stores.

The farm joined Tir Gofal in 2000 and

Glastir in 2012. In addition they run a

holiday cottage nearby which sleeps

12 people in six bedrooms and have

long term lets as well.

The Charollais breed was brought

onto the farm in the 1990’s to

improve the confirmation of the fat

lambs. Initially this proved problematic

as the type of ram bought produced

rather tender lambs; their ears were

virtually “see-through”.

The finished carcass classification was

hugely improved however, which

encouraged us to continue with

Charollais sires and they learned to

buy hardier types. “Breeders, in

general, have worked hard to develop

a hardier ram for use in the

commercial world”, says Richard.

“Breeders, in general, haveworked hard to develop ahardier ram for use in thecommercial world”

The Roderick’s have tried various

terminal sires in their farming system

and to date no other terminal sire can

improve on the weight for age and

excellent confirmation produced by

the Charollais ram. “If the

supermarket specification would allow,

Charollais X lambs could easily be

taken to well in excess of 22kgs

without being over-fat”, Richard

added.

“No other terminal sire canimprove on the weight forage and excellentconfirmation produced by theCharollais ram”

Currently they run 1,030 ewes, with

160 replacement ewe lambs. The

ewe flock consists of both Texel X and

Suffolk X Mule. They currectly use

75% Charollais rams and 25% Texel.

The Texel rams are used on the

longer, leaner Suffolk X ewes, while

the Charollais serve everything else.

The breeding cycle begins using

teaser rams in early September across

the whole flock. The entire rams are

then introduced in the last week of

September. Rams are purchased

locally and at the Builth NSA Ram

Sales. Sires purchased previously

include some from the Tawelfa flock

and at the recent Flock Visit to the

Welsh Region Flock Champion they

were impressed with the focus from

breeders on producing rams that will

thrive in working conditions. The

sheep they saw were in fit condition,

showing strong breed characteristics

coming from genetics and not feed.

Ewes are scanned early December,

housed and shorn prior to Christmas.

Winter feed is self-feed silage, feeding

off a 5ft high face, with barriers

inched on daily to ensure a

continuous supply of silage.

Concentrates are introduced to triplet

carrying ewe six weeks before the due

date, doubles at four weeks, with

single bearing ewes fed silage only.

The use of the teasers ensures a very

condensed lambing period with 90%

of ewes lambing between 18th

February and 5th March. Freshly

lambed ewes ideally spend 24 hours

in a 4ft pen, before transferring to

mixer pens with up to eight sets of

twins per pen.

Between the individual pens and the

mixer pens, predominantly disused pig

pens, there is capacity to hold 400

lambs, useful when weather

conditions are exceptionally poor.

As soon as they are strong enough

twins are boxed to grass. Every

opportunity to wet foster triplets onto

singles is taken, although it can take a

few days to boost milk production.

“By the end of May 523lambs had been marketedaveraging 19.2 kgs, demonstrating the growth ofthe Charollais”.

The lambing percentage scanned for

2012 was 186%, which was slightly

below the 192% in 2011. A tight

lambing period enables the Roderick’s

to concentrate on drawing lambs hard

in May and June.

By the end of May they had marketed

523 lambs at an average weight of

19.2kgs, which demonstrates the

speed of growth and excellent grading

characteristic of the Charollais lamb.

Of the lambs sold in May 30% were

graded E, 56% U and the remainder

at R.

Lambs are predominantly marketed

through Livestock Marketing to

Waitrose, with the remainder being

sold to other dead weight centres,

dependent on weight and fat class.

Aperiod of low spring lamb

prices coupled with rising costs

over recent years have driven

many farms away from early lambing,

but with lamb prices rising again and

the right system in place there is still a

margin to be made.

And for Presteigne-based Jonathan

Williams, who farms with his father,

Nigel, lambing a portion of their 300

ewes in the first week of January will

both offer them an opportunity to

capitalise on higher lamb prices and

ease flock management.

“Lambing 70 of the older ewes in

January will reduce pressure on the

lambing shed when it comes to the

main lambing in late February and

will enable us to give these ewes a bit

more attention.

“It will also mean we can cull them

earlier and reduce the pressure on the

grass through the summer months. If

we get another dry summer like this

one we’ll be glad not to have so many

ewes about the farm once we get mid-

summer.”

So, to ensure a compact lambing 100

older ewes were synchronised with

Chronogest sponges before the tups

went to work in the first week of

August. “Sponging is an expense, but

it means we’ll have a good tight

lambing for this smaller batch and

enable us to manage them better.

“Not only will they all lamb closely

together, but the returns will be

bunched up too, so we’ll not have to

worry so much about the odd one

lambing when we’re not expecting it.”

And with all the ewes cycling together

getting tupping right is essential, adds

Mr Williams. “We kept the ram:ewe

ration low, with ram lambs running at

1:10 for the first two days and the

older tups at 1:12.

“After two days the tups were taken

out and the ewes bunched together.

Then tups were reintroduced a

fortnight later to catch any returns

before being removed completely.

Ewes were scanned in the third week

of October and any not in lamb were

put back to the tups to join the later

lambing flock.”

“With high index Charollaistups selected for earlygrowth and muscle and ourewes fed to milk well weshould hit this target and beselling lambs when theprices are at their highest.”

The aim with the early flock will be to

finish the first lambs off milk and

creep at about 10 weeks old. “With

high index Charollais tups selected for

early growth and muscle and our ewes

fed to milk well we should hit this

target and be selling lambs when the

prices are at their highest.”

Management of the ewes in the run

up to lambing and immediately post-

lambing is critical to the flock’s

success and Mr Williams will be

aiming to feed the ewes well to get

plenty of milk on them before

lambing.

“The basic ewe feed is a home-mixed

ration of crushed wheat, oats and

soyameal. However, this will be

tweaked according to blood tests

taken from the ewes about four weeks

before lambing.

“Last year we fed a concentrate

because it worked out cheaper than

home-mixing and as a result of blood

testing a batch of ewes we added

extra soya to it as the tests showed

ewes were lacking a bit of protein. It

certainly made the difference and we

ended up with ewes which milked far

better than ever before.”

It is this level of monitoring which Mr

Williams says is crucial to success with

early lambing ewes. “The slightest

mistake can be costly, so everything is

done to maximise the number of

lambs sold/ewe put to the tup. This

year’s early lambing batch have

scanned at 158%, so we’ll want to be

sure of selling as close to that as we

can.”

This starts pre-lambing with ewes

given a long acting antibiotic dose to

ward off the threat abortion and ewes

vaccinated with a clostridial vaccine to

pass some immunity on to their lambs

in their colostrums.

“Then once lambs are born their

navels are dipped and they receive a

dose of oral antibiotic to prevent

watery mouth. I’d rather avoid the

routine antibiotic use, but losing a

lamb which could be worth more than

£100 to watery mouth is a wasteful

loss.”

Since switching to Charollaissires Mr Williams says lambshave more get and go thanwith previous terminal sires.“The lambs are up andsucked by themselves andhave plenty of vigour.”

“And, having lost a couple of lambs to

clostridial disease this year we’ll be

vaccinating the lambs to prevent it

next year.”

Triplet lambs are set onto single

bearing ewes whenever possible to

maximise their growth potential and

avoid the need to artificially rear them.

Ensuring the lambs receive sufficient

colostrumis paramount too and

since switching to Charollais sires

Mr Williams says lambs have more get

and go than with previous terminal

sires. “The lambs are up and sucked

by themselves and have plenty of

vigour.”

Once ewes and lambs have spent 24

hours in mothering up pens they are

turned out and next spring will graze

stubble turnips planted as part of the

farm’s Glastir environmental scheme.

“Creep feeders will be put out once

lambs are about 10 days old and

lambs will be offered creep pellets ad-

lib.”

With ewes dosed with a long acting

wormer at turn out the worm burden

is lessened in the early weeks of the

lambs’ lives, but later on Mr Williams

relies of faecal egg counting to assess

the need to drench.

“In most cases when we’re handling

lambs every week to draw them for

market we can see when they begin to

stop thriving, but using a faecal egg

count is a good way of checking we’re

on the right lines.”

Lambs from the early and late

lambing flocks are sold live through

Ludlow Market, with the aim to draw

them at 36-38kg.

“When lambs are taking a lot of creep

this is an ideal weight to draw them as

they kill out well and waiting for that

extra 2kg of weight can cost more

than it gains.”

Over the past 2 years Charollais

Australia, run by Ian McDougall and

Colin and Anthony Hilsdon has been

quietly expanding into New Zealand.

Embryos and semen were sold to 2

New Zealand farmers in 2010 who

had the first auction of Charollais

rams in December last year, 9 rams

averaged £4000 each.

Last year Charollais Australia formed

a joint venture with Lincoln University.

A shipment of embryos, live sheep

and semen will see the flock expand

to 50 ewes by 2013. The flock is

based at Ashley Dene Farm near

Lincoln, under the very capable

management of Nigel Jay, Senior

Technical Officer and Colin Pettigrew,

Farm manager.

Nigel, who was instrumental in

bringing the CT Scanner to Lincoln

Uni has been passionate about

Charollais for some time and jumped

at the opportunity to establish a flock

at Lincoln when the opportunity arose.

Extensive CT scanning of the flock will

enable Charollais down under to

rapidly increase their carcass quality.

In time the NZ flock will be a mirror

image of the Australian flock enabling

the benefits of CT scanning to be

utilised on both sides of the Tasman.

Viascan revealed that Charollais x

Coopworth lambs had significantly

more muscle in the loin and hind

quarter and that 96% of all Charollais

x Coopworth male lambs born met the

yield grading threshold.

Farmers in New Zealand do get

rewarded for carcass quality (assessed

by viascan) in the form of a bonus

paid on lambs that decent

conformation.

In Nigel’s words; “The signs at this

stage are positive and we are

impressed with how the first cross

Charollais has performed”. The

average birth weight of lambs was 5.5

kgs and the Charollais x lambs grew

much faster than the pure Coopworth

lambs.

He says “Charollais are bigger than a

Texel with more maternal traits

including higher fertility. They will give

the Texels a run for their money.”

It is Charollais’ ability to grow to very

heavy weights without laying down fat

that most impressed Nigel about the

breed. He believes under the current

payment structure, lamb finishers

would be financially better off adding

kilograms to their lambs rather than

trying to meet yield grading

thresholds.

At Lincoln University the Charollais

have been DNA tested for cold

tolerance, Nigel says he was surprised

at the results which showed that half

the animals tested had the highest

possible score for cold tolerance. This

suggests they are hardier than would

be expected in a terminal sire breed.

AustraliaMeanwhile in Australia the flock

continues to grow, 300+ ewes and

ewe lambs were put to the ram this

year and Charollais rams continue to

sell well, primarily to farmers who are

mating ewe lambs and maiden

hogget ewes.

The major terminal sire breeds in

Australia, the Poll Dorset and White

Suffolk, have selected for scan weight

to the extent that birth weights have

increased dramatically, resulting in

many commercial farmers suffering

lambing problems – all lambing is out

doors and unassisted. With lambs

being worth up to £110 at times, a

dead lamb is an expensive loss. If the

ewe dies as well then the total loss will

be £250 or more, replacement ewes

are expensive here. This has created

an opening for Charollais.

Australian farmers are not rewarded

for carcass quality and with the

shortage of lambs even over fat lambs

are currently not penalized. Looking

to the future we think this will not

always be the case and Charollais

Australia want to meet the future with

meat, not size and bone.

There is no doubt that the Charollais

is the easy lambing prime lamb sire

with meat where it counts!

The Charollais sheep winner of

the EBLEX Improved Flock

Awards for 2012 is the

Eastbach Flock, owned by Peter Scott

and Dougie Ferguson who farm near

Coleford in Gloucestershire.

Organised through the Sheep Better

Returns Programme, this award is

presented to the performance

recorded flock that has shown the

most impressive improvement in

genetic merit over a 12-month period,

within English Recorded Flocks for the

breed.

Peter Scott kept a small flock of sheep

for over 20 years, whilst working as a

solicitor, and bought the 12 hectare

(30 acre) Lower Tump Farm in 1998.

On retirement he developed his

interest in sheep, joining forces with

Dougie Ferguson who shared his

vision for breeding exceptional

pedigree terminal sires to sell to

commercial farmers.

Favouring the Charollais breed for its

ease of lambing, lamb vigour and

good growth traits, they established

the Eastbach Flock in 2008 with ewe

lambs bought at the major sales and

from established Charollais breeders.

Their aim is to breed rams that will

work for five years or more and

produce commercially viable animals

that thrive on grass-based systems.

In 2009 they bought ten more

yearlings and bred their offspring with

nationally recognised rams. The flock

now consists of 85 breeding ewes and

the intention is to close the flock.

However in 2011 they could not resist

buying three yearling ewes from the

Dalby 25th Anniversary Sale –

including Dalby Kate which has an

index of 497. A commercial flock of

150 Lleyn ewes is also run on 25

hectares (62 acres) of rented

grassland.

REcoRDing

PERFoRmancEThe flock has been recorded from the

start so that accurate performance

figures could be presented to potential

buyers. They started CT scanning a

few top quality ram lambs in 2011.

All aspects of sheep care, including

vet input, feeding and costs, are

recorded and taken into account

alongside the data for genetic traits.

“We use a good computer programme

which combines all the information we

collect,” says Peter Scott. “The hand-

held reader allows us to instantly

access all the records on a particular

animal, including its Signet figures.”

This information has also allowed the

two to boost Estimated Breeding

Values (EBVs) from 161 in 2008 on

16 animals, to 321 in 2011 based on

112 animals.

With a breed index of 442, he was

selected for his carcase attributes, as

he sits in the top 5% of the breed for

muscle depth and gigot muscularity.

He is in the top 1% of the breed in the

country and was ranked fifth in the

Signet National Top Sires for 2011.

He has increased the breeding

potential for muscle yield within the

carcase by over 0.75kg in a single

season.

Last year they bought Edstaston

Leopards Den in partnership with Neil

Oughton of the Lowerye flock, the

highest index ram lamb ever sold at

auction, he has an EBV Index of 500.

SElEcTing ThE BESTThe pair select ewes for breeding that

are good milk producers and have

good maternal traits, coupled with

excellent figures for growth and

muscle depth. They are also looking

to increase foot hardiness and cull

hard to achieve this.

Rams must have excellent weight gain

and muscle depth records and all

retained stock must have exceptional

and correct conformation. Most

importantly they must be able to

perform well off grass with no

concentrates.

Breeding stock is sold at the major

sales but increasingly customers,

including commercial and pedigree

producers are coming to the farm to

buy stock. Selling from the farm

allows customers to view the animals

in their natural surroundings and see

how they have been reared and

managed prior to sale. The rams are

sold fit and ready to work.

“Recorded pedigree breeders

understand and see the benefit of

using performance figures,” says Mr

Scott. “More commercial farmers are

also becoming interested, but usually

it is the combination of examining the

data and seeing the animals in the

field that gives the best overall picture

of their future performance.”

SaTiSFiED cuSTomERDonna Bowen, farm manager at

Bicknor Court Farm, Gloucestershire

runs 1000 Welsh Mule and 600 Welsh

ewes which are completely self-

contained. Only rams are purchased.

Charollais tups purchased from the

Eastbach flock have suited her system

well, and she particularly likes the fact

that they have not been over-fed. She

has been impressed at how easily the

ewes have lambed and how quickly

the lambs are up on their feet and

suckling, decreasing the work-load at

lambing.

January-born lambs are creep fed and

finish at 40-42 kgs liveweight at ten

weeks of age and attract good prices.

“Our sheep must thrive on grassland

and require little help from us,”

explains Ms Bowen. “The Charollais

cross lambs sired by Peter and

Dougie’s rams certainly fit the bill for

me.”

Samuel Boon believes that one of the

major benefits of improving the

genetics of a flock is the cumulative

and permanent way it lifts

performance.

“The time and effort involved will pay

dividends for years, not just in the

winning flock, but also in the flocks

that buy rams from them,” he says.

“With lamb prices at an all-time high,

the difference between choosing the

right recorded ram for the farm, or an

animal of average breeding merit,

could be worth £1,000 or more. So

there has never been a better time to

invest in superior genetics.

“Relative newcomers to the Charollais

breed, Peter and Dougie have invested

in the time and effort to produce top

class animals which has served them

well in a very short space of time.

Anew centre record was set for

Charollais at Worcester, when

a top price of 10,800 gns was

achieved. A shearling ram from the

Logie Durno flock of William and

Carole Ingram from Aberdeenshire

was knocked down to Welsh breeders;

Mr Tim Prichard of the well-known

Castellau flock and new breeder Mr

Justin Evans, who established his Sant

Andras flock last year. Their purchase

was Logie Durno Kracked-it a son of

Crogham Hannibal II out of a Foulrice

Gladiator ewe with a performance

breed index of 375, a top 5% ram.

The Logie Durno flock had another

extremely successful premier sale;

selling a total of 8 shearling rams and

8 ram lambs to gross £53,634 an

average of £3352.12 per head.

Next highest price was a ram lamb

from the Highway flock of Dilwyn

Davies in Carmarthenshire. Liberator

was sold for 6,500 gns to Mr Charles

Sercombe, who held a highly

successful sale of Charollais ewes in

June, in a joint purchase with Mr

David Mawhinney from Northern

Ireland. This lamb was an ET brother

to last year’s top price lamb, Arjane

Klansman out of the record-priced

ewe at the Arjane Dispersal sale which

sold for 5,800 gns.

The Ingram’s were also in the money

with their pen of ram lambs; their

topper was another ET lamb full

brother to Highway Liberator again a

purchase from the Arjane Dispersal

sale. Logie Durno Lord of the Ring,

had scanned with an eye muscle of

42.2 and caught the eye and final bid

of 6,000 gns from Angus and Sue

Howie. He now joins their Millhouse

flock, which enjoyed such success at

the 2011 Highland Show.

A very smart individual from Peter

Vaughan’s Kings Land flock in

Herefordshire attracted a final bid of

5,600 gns from Alan and Herbie

Kennedy, Parkgate flock and Brian

Harvey, Netherkeir flock both from

Dumfriesshire. Kings Land Leading

Light was sired by the dual supreme

interbreed winner, Logie Durno I’m Yer

Man out of a Southam Eros ewe. A

top 1% performance index lamb,

Logie Durno Laird sold for 4,800 gns

and was the joint choice of Northern

Irish breeders, Mr Norman McMordie,

Riverdale flock and R & S Cromie,

Doughery flock. This was sired by

last year’s top price lamb, Arjane

Klansman out of the 2nd placed

shearling ewe from the Royal Welsh

Show.

The Foulrice flock of Charles

Marwood had a strong pen of ram

lambs forward and going to 4,200 gns

for Foulrice Leon was Mr Arwel Owen

for his Banwy flock near Powys. This

lamb was sired by Wernfawr Jim and

was a top 25% performance animal.

There was a strong contingent of

purchasers from Ireland, both north

and south and a very smart shearling

tup from Adrian Davies from

Carmarthenshire attracted a final bid

of 4,000 gns from Mr Jim and

Frampton Jeffrey from Co Cork. Glyn

Coch Knight was by a home-bred sire

Igniter out of a Wraycastle Dai Hard

ewe

Also at 4,000 gns was a tup lamb

from the Lowerye Flock of Mr Neil

Oughton from Gloucestershire. Lucky

Lad was sired by the top price

shearling ram at the 2009 Builth Wells

ram sale, Mortimer Investment and

had exceptional performance figures

for muscle; an EBV of 5.09 the

highest value for this trait for offer on

the day. Purchaser for this one was

Mr C H Rees from the Vale of

Glamorgan for his Llynfi flock.

The Logie Durno flock was victorious

in the pre-sale show classes which

were judged by Mr Albert Ferguson

from Co Cork. Their shearling ram

Logie Durno Korker, sired by Crogham

Hannibal II out of a Rutland Ensign

daughter was the champion yearling

and reserve overall. He sold for 3,800

gns to Mr Sam Tindall from Yorkshire

for his Linton Springs flock.

The supreme champion was a ram

lamb, Logie Durno Lincoln also by

Hannibal II and sold for 2,400 gns.

He will cross the water to Irish

breeders Ed and Sheena McCarthy,

Co Cork.

Probably the thickest animal in the

market was a shearling ram from Huw

Robert’s Bachymbyd flock in North

Wales. Going to 3,800 gns for

Bachymbyd Kracker was a trio of

breeders; Messrs Quick and Mike

Alford from Devon plus the Probert

family from Herefordshire.

The entry of females was headed at

2,800 gns for a shearling ewe from

Adrian Davies’s Glyn Coch flock in

Carmarthenshire. She was sired by

Galtres Dominator out of one of Glyn

Coch’s most prolific show producing

dams. Her buyer was Messrs R & M

Price from Staunton on Wye.

Another yearling ewe this time from

the Parkgate flock of Alan & Herbie

Kennedy sold for1,900 gns and travels

across the water to McConnell Bros.

Ewe lambs peaked at 1050 gns and

1000 gns for two from the Kings Land

flock of Peter Vaughan. The

champion female came from the

Gogwell flock of Clive and Robert

Hopper.

Trade throughout the day for a hugely

increased entry was excellent, with

good clearance rates and

strong interest from local commercial

farmers.

Average prices for shearling rams

were just about on a par with 2010

with more than twice the number of

rams sold. For lambs the average

price went up by 10.5% to finish the

day on £1096 for the 156 sold.

Charollais Sheep Chairman

Jonathan Aiken had a red

letter day at the Northern

Ireland Charollais Sheep Premier in

Dungannon claiming the Champion

and Reserve Champion Spots and

also the top price of the day at

2900gns.

The Northern Bank sponsored pre-

sale show, judged by Mr Brian Davies

of the Honddu Flock in Wales, proved

a winner for the Carnew Flock of

Jonathan Aiken. His first prize

January born ram was the Judge’s

top choice of the day.

This Champion ram sold to County

Tyrone breeder, Gary Scott for

2900gns. In reserve place was the

December class winner also shown by

the Carnew Flock later selling for

1200gns to a Katesbridge breeder.

Both rams were sired by last year’s

Champion, Carnew Kingpin, a

Loaning Foot Highlander son.

Kingpin sold at the Worcester Premier

in July for 2000 gns. The Carnew pen

averaged 1288gns for four sold.

Topping the trade in the shearling

market was a tremendous shearling

from the Tullyear pen of Drew and

Stephen Cowan, this ET son of

Rutland Lightening was sired by

Rockvilla Golden Promise selling to

Stewartstown breeders George Booth

and George Hammond for 2300gns.

Another Lightening son from the

Tullyear pen, this time a January born

lamb sired by Arjane Kukri, sold for

1300gns to Michael Powers,County

Limerick.

The Doughery Flock of Robert and

Stuart Cromie had an excellent days

trading selling to a top of 1300gns for

their December born Logie Durno

Klass Act son, which sold to a breeder

from County Galway. Another in the

Doughery pen, a Logie Durno Jackpot

son sold for 900gns to William

Sherrard from Coleraine.

A high index ram from the Riverdale

Flock of Norman McMordie, a son of

Foulrice Kinsman attracted a bid of

1000gns and sold to Mr Wilson from

Co Fermanagh. Also at this price was

a son of Drumsallagh Harcourt shown

by Sidney Corbett and purchased by

John Foster, Castlederg. This ram’s

full brother sold for 3000gns at the

Premier Sale in 2009.

Taking the red rosette in the shearling

ram class were David and Liz

Mawhinney with a powerful Honddu

Investigator son, this ram later headed

South to County Cavan selling for

1500gns. The Judge’s choice in the

untrimmed class was an upstanding

ram from the Craig Brother’s pen

selling for 580gns to County Donegal.

In the Female class George and Jason

Booth took the honours with a

Riverdale Jupiter ewe lamb. Jupiter is

a son of Rainbow Hermes, this stylish

ewe lamb also made the top female

price on the day selling for 820gns to

County Clare Breeder Eamonn

Quinlivan.

Averages at the sale were once again

on the up with many astute

commercial buyers there to secure a

calibre ram; this demand early on the

season a reflection of the confidence

in the breed. A strong contingent of

Southern buyers drove prices up with

several of the higher priced rams

making their way South.

For one Charollais breeder from

Anglesey, the Main Builth Wells

Sale was a dream come true,

when his ram lamb topped the breed

entry. Dewi Prichard Evan’s very

muscular tup took the eye of many

breeders on the day, but in the end

was knocked down to the Logie Durno

flock of William and Carole Ingram for

3,200 gns. This son of a Rhaeadr

tup had stood 1st in the late

December born class under the

scrutiny of judge, Mr Geoff Biddulph

from Cheshire.

Next in line was the winner of the

shearling ram class from regular

vendor Geoff Probert from

Herefordshire. His Mortimer March

born yearling was sired by Inglis

Chalky out of a Lowerye Baldrick ewe

and was the choice of another Builth

regular, Huw Roberts for his

Bachymbyd flock. This one sold for

3,000 gns.

The Mortimer run of 30 shearlings

again won the Champion Award for

best pen in the sale and went on to

see further prices of 2,000 gns, 1,800

gns and an excellent average of

£893.00 with total clearance.

The Ingram’s Logie Durno flock

travelling all the way from

Aberdeenshire again had an excellent

sale. Their January born lamb sired

by Edstaston Jigsaw took the

individual show championship and

went on to attract a bid of 3,000 gns

from Northern Ireland breeders, David

and Liz Mawhinney. Their pen of 7

ram lambs went on to win the reserve

champion pen award and the top pen

average of the day of £1,399.50. A

further five lambs in their pen sold for

over £1,000.

It was also the Logie Durno pen of 7

shearling rams that achieved the best

average of the day in this section,

finishing up at £930.00. Top of this

group was a full ET brother to LD

Jackpot, which sold for 1,400 gns to

Neil Oughton and Peter Scott from

Gloucestershire.

Second top price in the shearling

section was one from the Foulrice pen

of 15 rams from Charles Marwood in

Yorkshire. Their April born son of

same price this time to Thomas

Hunter for his Skelton Whin flock.

Dilwyn Davies from Carmarthenshire

continued his good season with three

tup lambs over the £1,000 mark.

Leading the way were two ET sons of

Artnagullion Jose out of the same

ewe; Cyril Dougherty from Yorkshire

took one at 1,500 gns and the second

went to Laga Farms Ltd in Orkney at

1,350 gns. A further Jose son sold for

1,300 gns to Anna Whitehead for her

Samlesbury flock in Lancashire.

Clearance rates were achieved of 82%

for shearlings and 76.5% for lambs.

Russell Gray from Langside

Farm, Kirkfieldbank near

Lanark topped his local sale

with a tup lamb from his Leelaw flock.

Going to 1,700 gns for this son of

Rhaeadr Juror was Messrs J A & H D

Craig from Biggar in Lanarkshire. The

tup will join their Jami flock.

Next in the money was James

Clanachan from Marylolm Farm in

Dumfries. His January born single tup

lamb was the choice of pre-sale judge,

Mr James Andrew from Ayrshire.

Maryholm Loch Lomond was sired by

Castellau Joules, the 2nd prize

shearling at the Highland Show in

2010 and Interbreed champion at the

Cumberland County Show 2010.

Putting the final bid in was David

Sloan from Dumfires for his Rigghead

flock.

Just missing the four figure mark at

950 gns was Banwy Lothario from

Welsh breeder, Arwel Owen. His

Coventry sired tup lamb was out of a

Cairnhill Developer ewe and knocked

down to the judge, Mr James Andrew

and goes to the Rowanston flock at

Maybole in Ayrshire.

Clearance on the lambs was

somewhat disappointing but there was

a total clearance for the gimmers and

ewe lambs on offer. Several new

breeders were present to stock their

newly formed flocks.

Topping this section was a gimmer

from the Parkgate flock of Alan and

Herbie Kennedy in Dumfries. Their

Foxhill Jake sired ewe was sold for

1,000 gns to J K & F G Smith,

Newlands, Maybole, Ayrshire.

Parkgate sold a further ewe for 820

gns to Mr D J Hughes from North

Wales.

The Maryholm flock was in the money

in this section to, with a gimmer going

for 850 gns to the Rowanston flock of

Messrs R & J Andrew. Howard Davies

from Aberdeenshire topped the ewe

lamb section at 700 gns for his Logie

Durno Eastern Promise sired lamb,

going to Mr S Mair, Lockerbie,

Dumfries.

Running a tight ship at Redhill

Farm in Rutland is Jamie Wild

who has been the sheep

manager for over 16 years for the

owners Charles and Richard Tyler.

The key to the success of this 2,000

ewe lambing unit is adapting the

system to suit the farm situation, co-

operation and working closely with

suppliers and customers to achieve

the best results.

The farm runs to 360 hectares of

grassland plus a further 1,000

hectares of arable land. The rolling

lowland farm is about 100 meters

above sea level growing wheat, rape

and beans. The sheep are kept on

the poorer land on the farm and some

old parkland; all of which is farmed

with no or very low inputs.

“I like to keep the systemsimple and practical. Thebreeds we have selected forthe farm have enabled us todo just that.”

“I like to keep the system simple and

practical. The breeds we have

selected for the farm have enabled us

to do just that.” The ewe flock consists

of North Country mules which are

purchased as ewe lambs direct from

farms around the Hawes area.

“We have adopted this approach to

try and keep disease to a minimum.

We buy from the same farms each

year and work together with other

buyers from around home to make up

a load of around 3,000 sheep which

gives us buying strength,” explains

Jamie.

He is full of praise for the mules and

says he cannot find a ewe breed to

compete with them “they are so easy

to work with and the scale we are

operating on requires this. Also the

number of lambs born is vital to the

profitability of the enterprise and the

mule supplies this.”

Foot problems in the ewe flock used to

be a concern, but with the direct

purchasing off farm plus a rigorous

culling policy of any ewe with severe

infection, this has been reduced

dramatically. “You don’t get a second

chance to prove yourself on this farm

and this regime certainly drives up the

productivity of the flock.”

On arrival from the North, the

ewe lambs are kept in isolation

Keeping the system simple is key to success on this2,000 ewe lowland unit in Rutland.

from the main flock for nearly 12

months and go through a vaccination

programme for most ailments

including abortion and clostridial

diseases etc. “We pay the farms a

price based on the average market

price at Hawes.”

The farm has been using Charollais

rams for the past 16 years. “I just love

lambing Charollais cross lambs; they

are just so easy to lamb and then they

get up and fight, they are so vigorous”

“I just love lambingCharollais cross lambs; theyare just so easy to lamb andthen they get up and fight, they are so vigorous” saysJamie.

“They are great to work with, we lamb

on average 90 ewes a day and with

these two breeds this is practical and

workable. We have never had the vet

out to lamb a sheep in all my time on

the farm.”

The farm goes for a highly intensive

lambing pattern. The use of teaser

rams and getting the ewes in just the

right condition is the key to this

process. “I want the ewes to get

pregnant in their 2nd cycle; the

teasers are there for the first cycle and

then the tups take over.” The lambing

% is very important; scanned at

around 204% is perfect, if it goes up

to 210% this is too high.

Lambing is timed to start in Week 9 of

the year, the end of February. The

2,000 ewes are all lambed within 21

days; anything that does not scan in

lamb is culled. The ewes come into

the lambing yards in groups, are

penned up in individual pens for 24

hours post lambing and then in

mothering-up groups for a further 24

hoursbefore going outside.

“Everyone works really hard for this

period, we give the ewes 24 hour

cover. We have worked hard at

making the layout of the building as

efficient as possible including fitting

an automatic watering system in the

individual pens, which saves hours.

The aim is to wet foster all the triplets

and turn every ewe out with a pair.”

Lambs are creep fed and the 1st draw

takes place at the end of May, the aim

is to finish the majority of the lambs

before the end of June with the

remainder finishing through

July/August. “We mix all our own lamb

creep and stick to a simple lamb

ration of good quality ingredients that

the lambs perform well on. Charollais

cross lambs come into their own on

this system and last year we had sold

over 1500 lambs by the 10th June,

the flexibility of this cross to be fit at a

wider range of weights is vital. All the

lambs go direct to an abattoir so we

have feedback of carcass weight and

grading on the day that they are

killed, this is essential information

when drawing the next batch of

lambs”.

Again, the Tyler’s work with a group of

5 or 6 other farms to market the

Individual pens with automatic watering

system. q

lambs.

Jamie is looking for an average

carcase weight of 20 kg as payment

from the supermarkets is capped at

21 kgs. An R3L fits the supermarket

specification well. “Due to the mule

there may be fewer lambs in the top

grades for conformation, but our

returns would be far less if we

changed ewe breed to chase a better

shaped lamb. The prolificacy would

drop and so would our profit.”

Selecting the right tups forthe system is also highlyimportant and Jamie usesperformance figures as agood guide plus structuralcorrectness.

Selecting the right tups for the system

is also highly important and Jamie

uses performance figures as a good

guide plus structural correctness. “I

have always selected rams in the top

group of indices, but going back a few

years this did cause a few problems

with some rams that were too lean

and lambs did not finish at the correct

weights. The ranking system has

improved now to eliminate these over

lean tups and I now am more selective

on the individual EBV traits and make

sure they have enough growth but I

am increasingly looking to improve

conformation.” The farm used

to have a local supply of just the

North Country Mules at Redhill Farm with their Charollais cross lambs.

that through the markets where you

temptation is to push rams more than

The Charollais flock, which started

with the purchase of a few Rutland

dispersal and production sales, now

numbers 50 ewes. The aim of the

When Will Norton came home

from University he brought

with him ideas that were

going to completely reshape farming

at Culmington Farm. He sat down

with his father Phil and budgeted all

the enterprises currently in place. The

farm is mixed farm with 200 acres of

grass and 250 acres of arable. They

farmed approximately 500 Suffolk

cross ewes, 130 suckler cows and

grew wheat, beans, oats and barley.

The black faced ewes were very

labour intensive, lambing indoors from

early January onwards and being

turned out to grass as they became

strong enough. Originally these ewes

went to a Suffolk ram but in the mid

eighties Phil bought two Charollais

rams at a farm sale and was

immediately convinced that Charollais

was the ram for him.

“My first impression was that they

were easily lambed, lambs were quick

to their feet to suckle and the lambs

had excellent confirmation.” It was

not long before the Suffolk rams were

phased out to be replaced by

Charollais.

“My first impression wasthat they were easilylambed, lambs were quick totheir feet to suckle and thelambs had excellentconfirmation.”

As far as suckler cows were

concerned, Phil said over the years

they produced some very good

finished bulls and stores but no matter

what they did they could not make an

acceptable profit, so it was time to

change everything, that is except the

Charollais rams.

The suckler cows went as did the

larger Suffolk cross ewes to be

replaced by 900 LLeyn cross ewes and

Welsh mules. On the arable side the

rotation revolved around wheat, oil

seed rape, oats and maize and an

extra 100 acres of land was rented in.

The sheep flock moved to outdoor

lambing in April with Charollais rams

still being the preferred choice. This

fitted in much better with the rest of

the farming at Culmington and with

some casual help at lambing time Phil

and Will could now expand a sizeable

contracting business that they had

now started.

Phil chooses his Charollais rams

carefully, although reluctant to use

figures for selection he has not ruled

out the possibility of this becoming

more influential in his ram selection in

the future. His rams have to be

blockly with small heads and wide

loins, to him shape is much more

important than size. The smaller

heads give him much easier lambing

for their easy care system.

The smaller heads give himmuch easier lambing fortheir easy care system.

Rams go in to the ewes on November

5, with the ewes having been flushed

on grass in October. The ewes are

then housed from mid December

onwards on a ration of grass and

maize silage and lifeline feed buckets

a few days before turn out. Housing

the ewes gives grass time to grow

ready for the April lambing.

The triplets go out 4 weeks before

lambing, the doubles 3 weeks before

and the singles one week. This, in

their opinion, gives all ewes time to

adapt and ensure plenty of milk at

lambing. Any triplets that are

struggling are taken off ewes, reared

on a machine and then sold on as

cades. All ewes lamb in the fields and

very few have to be brought back

inside with their lambs – no

concentrates are fed to either ewes or

lambs. With prevention better than

cure all lambs are vaccinated for orf

and given a drench to prevent

cocidiosis as routine. Most lambs are

sold finished off the ewes with the

remainder weaned late August early

September to be sold as stores from

mid September to mid October.

All lambs have to be sold in the year

of birth because with ewe numbers

now approaching 1000 there is not

enough grass to run stores over winter

even if the returns look to be good.

1650 lambs were sold last year with

the 1100 prime lambs going to

Euroquality in Craven Arms. At an

average of 19 kgs per head, 30% of

these lambs graded E & U and came

to an average price of £69 per head

after stoppages – not bad off just

grass.

Two years ago Phil put 12 acres of

chicory in as an experiment. The

weaned lambs go on to this in batches

of about 250 for a couple of weeks

before they are sold and there is no

doubt that these lambs grow

exceptionally well on this.

The 550 stores were sold over a four

week period in Ludlow market at an

average of £63 per head after

stoppages last year. Phil says that

Charollais cross store lambsare very much in demand forstore finishers in the area.

they don’t see that as a viable option.

Where do you sellyour meat andwho are yourcustomers?

When did you firstcome acrossCharollais lambs?

Do you have apreference ofweight and finishfor yourcustomers?

We have a local butchers

shop and our main

customers would fall into

the 35 - 60 year old

category.

We first starting buying

some Charollais lambs in

1995. These are all

sourced from local

producers, direct from the

farm.

We like to have a large

carcase; 23 - 27 kgs with a

good level of finish but not

fat. Plenty of meat on the

loin is very important.

Martin ThomasButchers,Pattingham inStaffordshire

We sell through a variety of

outlets; catering

establishments, home

freezer trade, farmers

markets and to retail

butchers.

I first became aware of

Charollais lambs in 2000.

My ideal lamb is a 22kg,

U3. It is crucial that

farmers select the lambs for

slaughter at the correct

finish level. Too lean is just

as much as a problem as

too fat!

What do you likeabout Charollaiscross lambs?

What cuts aremost popular andhow do Charollaisfit into thiscategory?

Do people ask forCharollais byname and do youmarket novel cutsof lamb?

What do you thinkthe future for lambmeat will see?

Charollais cross lambs are

ideal for our trade. They

are long, lean and with

plenty of succulent meat in

the right places. We can

take these heavier lambs

and know they will kill out

well for our customers.

Most popular with our

customers are legs and

chops. They like a good

size leg of lamb for a family

roast dinner. Then it is

chops. The Charollais fit

this well; good weight of

leg and chops with a big

eye muscle and lean.

Many of our customers

want repeat orders “I

would like another joint like

that last one” They also

want to support local

producers and like to know

where the meat comes

from. We do cushion of

lamb, filets and racks for

customers.

Lamb meat is very

expensive at the moment,

so we are not shifting the

volume of lamb. But it is a

product our buyers like and

will keep demanding.

The conformation of

Charollais lambs is just

right for us. They have the

shape but more importantly

lots of length which is so

important.

My customers like Lamb

Henrys (a traditional

Yorkshire cut from the

shoulder) and racks of

lamb. The length of

Charollais makes good

racks.

We sell mainly traditional

cuts but also make a range

of burgers, sausage and

marinated products for

barbecues.

The recent higher prices

given for lamb are turning

meat into a luxury item,

therfore make it the

customers 4th choice of

meat, e.g. Beef, Pork

(including sausages and

bacon), Chicken and then

Lamb.

We asked butchers and farm shops aset of questions about our breed, andthe general lamb meat trade. Theirresponses are set out below.

George Bush is the Farm

Estate the 2,600 acre estate

which takes in some of the most

stunning countryside in Yorkshire. The

sheep enterprise on the farm took a

different direction some 18 years ago

“we used to keep horned ewes, but I

felt that we could do better on the

lowland ground and made the

decision to move to pedigree Lleyn

ewes.” The estate now runs 1,800

Lleyn ewes and only buys in tups and

they are highly pleased with the breed.

The majority of production is aimed at

pedigree Lleyn ewe lambs but a

decision was made to put the older

ewes to a terminal sire. Mr Bush was

convinced by his local butcher that

there was nothing to beat the quality

of a Charollais cross Lleyn lamb.

Lambing takes place in April and all

Lambing the Charollais crosslambs is no problem

Lambing the Charollais cross lambs is

no problem “we monitor the ewes 24

hours a day, but it is very rare to have

to lamb a ewe. We bring in help for

this busy time and the instructions are

not to touch the ewes, just monitor

them and let them get on with it.”

The farm did try another tup breed on

the Lleyn but they did not stay long on

the estate. “We were having to lamb

every other ewe, which is just not

acceptable.”

The estate is blessed with tremendous

grass, being entirely south facing.

Lambs are all reared without

concentrates and the first are ready by

the end of June.

“We aim to get the lambs to the

optimum weight for the trade and

generally get an extra 5 to 8 kgs of

liveweight from the Charollais cross,

as compared to the pure lambs.”

The sheep enterprise is currently doing

well and the aim is to increase the

flock to 2,000 ewes and continue with

the policy of crossing the older stock

with the Charollais.

George is pleased to report that he

has an enthusiastic young shepherd

a new mobile race which will

stays at the current level in the prime

in the sector to be able to invest and

expand for the future.”

The Charollais breed was back

in winning ways at the biggest

show of the year when it was

victorious in the Interbreed Pairs and

Interbreed Group of Three and just

missed out when taking the reserve

overall interbreed individual title.

The supreme champion in the classes

was Mrs Jennifer Curtis’s 3-shear ewe,

Elmwick Isabel. Her sire was Sarkley

Grand Prix out of a Highway Mr Softie

ewe.

Tim Prichard’s Castellau flock had an

outstanding show taking the reserve

breed ticket with a well-grown and

exceptional smart ram lamb, Lord of

the Manor. The tup lamb was an ET

son of previous RWAS reserve

interbreed winner, Castellau

Champagne sired by Penhros Ibanez.

Lord of the Manor featured in both

interbreed winning teams. Along with

the reserve female champion from the

classes. Dalby Jessica the duo took the

interbreed pairs title. Jessica stood

2nd in her class to the champion but

was pulled through to take the reserve

title. Her sire was Rockvilla Father Ted

and dam Rutland Lightening.

Castellau also topped all breeds with

their group of three; Lord of the

Manor, shearling ewe and ewe lamb.

The lamb was sired by the 1st prize

shearling ram on the day, Logie Durno

Knout Out. The Castellau flock

purchased this son of Edstaston

Jigsaw at the Worcester Premier Sale

for 3,300 gns.

Jenny Curtis’s ram lamb, Elmwick

Landscape stood 2nd in his class but

also came through the ranks to take

the reserve male champion ticket.

This tup lamb was sired by Glyncoch

JPR out of a Rother Valley Dynamic

ewe. The Elmwick flock was also top

of the line with their shearling ewe by

Sarkley Grand Prix out of an Elmwick

G4 daughter.

The Logie Durno flock of William and

Carole Ingram from Aberdeenshire

took a couple of red tickets. Their

senior ram was a full ET brother to LD

I’m Yer Man, sired by Crogham

Hannibal II.

A full ET sister to last year’s Champion

and 1st prize ewe lamb, stood top of

the line-up in the ewe lamb class.

The Logie Durno lamb was sired by

Rockvilla Golden Promise out of a

Rutland ewe - this breeding has

certainly produced some show winners

over the years.

Celebrations for the 25th

anniversary of the Northern

Ireland Charollais Sheep Club

certainly got off to a memorable start

with the breed taking the Supreme

Interbreed Championship at Balmoral

Show and also reserve in the

Interbreed Pairs competition.

Claiming top honours in the

championship was Ballynoe House

Princess Katie, shown by the

Lornbrook Flock of Diane Christie; this

outstanding shearling ewe was

described as a potential winner by Ian

Craig when he sold her as a ewe lamb

at the Charollais Female Sale in

Dungannon. She was sired by the

Ballyhibbon stock ram purchased from

Michael Powers and with two

influential grand sires, Kingsland

Highflyer and Castellau Formidable

Katie was a worthy winner.

The high standard of Charollais on

show attracted favourable comments

from the large crowd watching around

the ringside as Judge Richard Geldard

from Cumbria went about his job. First

into the ring were the senior rams with

the 4 year old ram, Honddu

Investigator Ram presented by David

and Liz Mawhinney claiming the

honours. This ram is no stranger to

red rosettes having previously won the

ram lamb class at the Royal Welsh in

2008.

Group leader in the shearling ram

class was Garriston Knockout shown

by the Lornbrook Flock of Diane

Christie. This well-balanced fleshy

ram out of a dam by Coventry

Fosterman went on to win Reserve

Male Champion. In a highly

contested senior ewe class the

Lornbrook Flock were once again to

the fore,after much deliberation

Judge,Richard Geldard placing their

Parkgate Glenmorangie daughter as

his first choice.

Two strong well fleshed ram lambs

from the Rockvilla Flock caught the

Judge’s eye, with his first choice going

to a Logie Durno Jackpot son,

Rockvilla Lord of the Ring, the dam of

this ram was purchased at the

Southam Dispersal Sale 2010 for

3000gns.

Winning first place in the ewe lamb

class was a very smart ewe lamb from

the Riverdale Flock of Norman

McMordie, sired by Rutland

Humdinger and out of a homebred

ewe this stylish ewe lamb Riverdale

Lavender went on to win Reserve

Female Champion and Reserve

Overall Champion.

First time exhibitors, Angus and

Sue Howie had a highly

succesful and memorable debut

at the Highland Show, when their ram

lamb Millhouse Lucky Shot took the

championship award. His sire was

Logie Durno Jackpot and the dam

was by Crogham Hannibal II ewe.

Mr Howie is full of praise for the

Charollais breed “ I feel it will expand

significantly in popularity in the future.

We have 30 ewes and are still

expanding our flock.” The Millhouse

flock also took the reserve spot with a

shearling ewe that they purchased at

the Arjane Dispersal sale in 2010 for

6,000 gns. She was by top show ram,

Galtres Dominator.

Breed judge, Mrs Carole Ingram from

Aberdeenshire said after the classes “I

felt the standard of sheep was

excellent. The champion ram lamb

had size, length, shape and a sharp

head and stood up well against the

gimmer. She was a lovely example of

the breed and handled exceptionally

well.”

Taking both the reserve cards were

Alan and Herbie Kennedy with

exhibits from their Parkgate flock in

Dumfries. The reserve male

champion was the 2nd prize ram

lamb, Parkgate Lucky Charm. His sire

was Glyncoch Idol out of the 4,000

gns Lornbrook ewe. The ram lambs

full brother achieved the same award

in 2010.

Making her 4th appearance at the

Highland was their wonderful ewe,

Parkgate Hottie, a previous champion

at this show, this time she was just

pipped at the post by the younger

ewe. Hottie was sired by a Blythe tup

out of a Southam Black Adder ewe.

Delighted with his red rosette was

young breeder, Ben Radley from

Dumfries. His stock ram, Parkgate

Johnny stood top of the line in the

senior ram class. A previous

champion at the Lanark Premier sale

his sire was also Glyncoch Idol.

The Millhouse flock finished the day

with another winner with their ewe

lamb, standing above two from

Parkgate. She was the product from

the Arjane Dispersal sale, sired by

Artnagullion Jose.

Another bred in the Artnagullion flock

stood top of the shearling ram class,

this one Knailer exhibited by the

Kennedys.

Local breeders Stephen and

Nicola Hodgson from Bedale in

North Yorkshire were triumphant

at the Great Yorkshire Show with their

senior stock ram, Springfield Inxs. A

previous 1st prize winner at the show

this year he went one step further to

take the tri-colour card from Mr David

Mawhinney from Northern Ireland.

The ram also went on to take the

Interbreed Terminal Sire title. The tup

is a son of Inglis Chalky and bred in

Wales by Mr and Mrs G Jones out of a

Wraycastle bred dam.

In the reserve spot was the 1st prize

shearling ewe from Geoff Watson and

Carol Grain from Northamptonshire.

Sulwood Kinky Kitten had taken the

interbreed title at the Royal Norfolk

Show in June and is sired by a home-

bred tup Sulwood Hawk. The ewe

also went on to win the Interbreed

Terminal Sire (Female) section.

The Linton Springs flock of Robert and

Sam Tindall from Wetherby in

Yorkshire, had a highly succesful day

taking both the male and female

reserve tickets. Their shearling ram

Logie Durno King Maker was 1st in a

strong class of tups. He was an

embryo lamb out of the top mating of

Rockvilla Golden Promise and ZFY

5122 and purchased at the main

Builth Wells ram sale.

Their home-bred 1st prize ewe, was

the reserve female champion, a

daughter of Elmwick G4 out of a

Trevadlock ewe by Carnevas Ascender.

These two sheep teamed up with their

2nd prize ram lamb to take the group

of three award.

There was an excellent show of tup

lambs for the judge to sort and he

choose a son of his champion,

Springfield Inxs as the winner. Bred by

the Hodgsons he was out of a home-

bred ewe sired by Aberkinsey Earth

Mover.

The last class of the day was won by

the Foulrice flock of Charles and

Valerie Marwood from Whenby, near

York. Their well-grown lamb was sired

by Wernfawr Jim out of a Urlay Nook

Endeavour. This female may not be

back in the show ring in 2012 as she

went on to be tupped and produced a

fine set of triplets!

Local breeder Mrs Jennifer Curtis

from Wickhamford near

Evesham was back in winning

ways with her Charollais shearling

ewe, Elmwick Kit Kat at the Three

Counties Show.

Kit Kat’s sire was Glnycoch JPR and

her dam was by Foulrice Denethor.

She went on to take the Reserve

Interbreed Champion title.

Victorious in the Lamb Interbreed

competition was D P Jones’s ewe

lamb from his Pwll flock in Brecon.

She was out of a ewe purchased from

Edward Lloyd Lewis’s Gyffin flock and

sired by Parkgate Highlander. The

cross has been so succesful that Mr

Jones repeated the mating this year

using embryo transfer. Mr Jones

reports that the ewe is looking well

and destined for the show ring again

this summer.

His flock also supplied the reserve

breed champion; a senior ewe. She

was bred in the Arjane flock of Arwyn

Thomas and purchased as a ewe

lamb in 2006. She was sired by

Galtres Dominator out of a Foulrice

Rival ewe.

Runner-up in the Interbreed Lamb

competition was the winner of the ram

lamb competition from Mr Ryan and

Miss Mia Price from Staunton-on-Wye,

Hereford. Oakchurch Lord of the

Rings was a single born December

lamb sired by Logie Durno Klassic out

of a Banwy ewe, which was purchased

at the Saucy Sale in Worcester for780

gns. This tup lamb went of to sell at

the Worcester Premier Sale for 2,900

gns.

Mrs Curtis also picked up three other

red tickets the first being with her

senior stock ram, Onecote Incredible

who was also sired by Parkgate

Highlander and goes back to an

Elmwick tup on the dam’s side.

First in the shearling ram class was

Garriston Kilowatt, which Mrs Curtis

jointly owns with Mr and Mrs John

Girffiths. This tup was purchased in

2010 as a lamb at the Builth Wells

sale.

The final class of the day was for a

group of three lambs all sired by the

same ram. Heading the line-up were

Cecil and Janet Thomas with two ewe

lambs and a ram lamb from their

Wolston flock near Coventry. They

were all sired by Logie Durno Jeeves a

joint purchase at 3,000 gns at the

2010 Worcester Premier sale, with

Charles Sercombe’s Dalby flock.

Losses due to condemned sheep liversIn the whole of 2010, the cash loss in England, Scotland

and Wales due to condemned sheep livers was just over

£1 million, according to Dr Phil Hadley from Eblex.[1]

He says this is based on Food Standards Agency data

that 7.23% of sheep livers—995,419 in number—were

rejected for fluke.

If the full impact of fluke on sheep performance was

also taken into account, the loss would be considerably

larger, adds Pfizer vet William Sherrard. “The majority of

disease outbreaks are seen in the autumn through to

mid-winter, due to ingestion of infective cysts found on

the pasture in late summer through to early winter,” he

says.[2] “However, lambs may not show clinical signs of

acute fluke, yet the FSA figures prove that a significant

number are carrying sufficient fluke at slaughter.”

Dealing effectively with fluke requires an understanding

of its life-cycle. The fluke eggs hatch and enter into the

mud snail during the early part of the summer provided

the ground conditions are damp, before emerging from

the snail and developing into infective cysts on the

pasture, if weather conditions are damp from late

summer onwards. Sheep ingest infective cysts off the

pasture and they develop through early immature then

late immature stages before maturing into egg-laying

adults. It takes about 12 weeks for the adults to develop

from the time they are ingested by the sheep. The adults

are found in the bile ducts and lay large numbers of

eggs which pass out in the dung. The significance of

these stages is in choice of flukicide, because some kill

adults only (e.g. clorsulon), others will kill late immature

and adults (e.g. closantel, nitroxynil) while

triclabendazole kills all three.

Page 105: Year Book 2012

103

Where liver fluke is a known threat, use of a

triclabendazole-based treatment in the autumn ensures

that all life-cycle stages including early immature are killed,

thereby reducing the risk of acute fluke disease.

“In ewes and lambs alike, it is crucial that an autumn fluke

treatment kills the early immature stages,” he says. “If a

mixed infestation of worms and fluke is being treated, then

a single-dose combination treatment of moxidectin-

triclabendazole is appropriate.”

An important issue in fluke control is the occurrence of

suspected triclabendazole-resistant fluke in some parts of

the UK. It is critical to monitor sheep closely in the late

autumn/ early winter and check out any signs suspicious of

fluke, even after treatment. On investigation, apparent

treatment failures can be due to factors other than

resistance.[3] For suspected cases of triclabendazole

resistance, farmers should work with their veterinary

surgeon to get to the bottom of the problem and modify

farm management practices accordingly.

CYDECTIN® TriclaMox® contains moxidectin (0.1%) and

triclabendazole (5%). POM-VPS. For further information,
