A Focus on Our School Values
on the first day of attendance this year students took part in a number of year level assemblies. the focus of each assembly was to support students to revisit the school Values and to align themselves with who we are as a learning community. six of our senior school leaders selected one of the school values and presented to the assembly on what that particular value means to them.
School Value: Integrity presented by David Sutherland.
“Hi i’m David sutherland and i’m here to briefly discuss the school value of integrity. this can be one of the more confusing but perhaps the most important of the school values.
the dictionary describes integrity as, the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.
Although this definition gives a general explanation of what the word means, it doesn’t clearly explain how integrity applies to our everyday lives. so this is what integrity means to me and how i think it should apply to our lives.
integrity can be thought of as the underlying value, or the foundation, which all the other values sit upon, whether they are the values which our school holds dear or any other values that are important to you.
A person who demonstrates integrity will apply themselves 100 % to each and every aspect of their lives, even if their actions go unseen. you don’t have to get straight A’s to demonstrate integrity and you don’t have to win every athletic race to demonstrate integrity. if you try your hardest, apply yourself completely, and be true to who you are, you are demonstrating integrity.”
Student Achievement
Australian Junior Athletics:
Congratulations to Keely Boyne (year 9, Everard House) who competed in the 2016 Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth last week. she competed in the under 15 200m Hurdles final and came 5th overall. she also competed in the under 15 90m Hurdles and finished ninth - just missing out on qualifying for the final. Keely ran her personal best in both events. this is an outstanding achievement for Keely and i wish her all the very best as she continues to engage with the sport.

BmX national Championships:
Congratulations to Hannah Wasylkowski (year 9, Stewart House) who competed in the 2016 BmX national Championships in Bathurst last week. After a big crash in a national series race on thursday she was nursing some injuries going into the national race on saturday. Hannah competed against 26 other girls from across Australia, she began saturday well with a 4th and a 2nd place and then she crashed in her third race but finished with enough points to make it into the semifinal. Hannah finished 3rd in the semifinal which guaranteed her a finals berth, she is the first Victorian girl in her age group to make a national final in a number of years. in a nail biting final, Hannah earned herself the title of ‘#5 Australia- 15yo Girls’. this is an exceptional achievement and one that Hannah should be very proud of. i know that we all are very proud of her. i wish her well with her future in the sport.
Beach Volleyball:
i take this opportunity to congratulate all the students that participated in the Beach Volleyball competitions . some outstanding results have been achieved and i refer you to the sports section of the newsletter for the finer detail. well done!
Chess Victoria tournament:
Congratulations to Cameron Yung (year 12, Stewart House) who on sunday, 20 march participated in the Chess Victoria Age-Group Rapid tournament and managed to win the u18 Boys division. the published photo shows Cameron with the u16 champion Regan Crowley and international master Leonid sandler who is the current Chess Vic President. this event is for juniors (18 years and under) who have a rating with the Australian Chess Federation, or students who qualified to one or more Chess Victoria state finals in 2015. more than 150 young people across all the divisions participated in the competition.
over the term break, Cameron will be travelling to Canberra to participate in the Doeberl Cup. Cameron is a student who is highly committed to his studies but also shows passion and commitment to this sport in which he participates in at a high level. i wish Cameron all the very best as he prepares for his next round of competition.

Mon, 2•year 10 work experience (mon, 2 - Fri, 6 may)
Approximately 30 students participated in a discussion led by Jenny macklin. As expected, our students did not hold back and were able to communicate their ideas, feelings and hopes in a very clear and mature way.
once again i have to say that this forum was yet another example of just what fantastic ambassadors our students are for our school and for our community. Both Vicki and Jenny left the school with a good deal to think about. in particular, it highlighted the importance and the benefits of the work of the safe schools Coalition and the value that our students see in this work supporting the education agenda of not just our school but also our system. needless to say i was very proud of them.
i take this opportunity to thank both Vicki and Jenny for taking time out of their very busy schedules to meet with our young people.
Wedding Bells
i extend the congratulations of the eltham High school Community to mr Gabriel Piras and miss Adaline tallarida who were married on saturday, 19 march and similarly to miss ida sakkal who was married to her partner Brian on sunday 20, march. we wish them all a long and happy life together.
Congratulations
i take this opportunity to congratulate mrs Veronica Rustica and mrs natasha young who, as of the start of term 2, will be moving into a period of maternity leave followed by parental leave. i wish them and their respective partners all the very best as each couple awaits the birth of their first child. we are currently in the process of filling the teaching positions which become vacated with both mrs Rustica’s and mrs young’s departures.
Retirement
i wish to acknowledge that mrs Helen macKenzie, for personal reasons, has tendered her resignation, effective as from the first day of term 2. mrs macKenzie was employed from the tAFe sector to support the development and implementation of the Vet Hospitality program as well as teach in the Foods program. she has done a wonderful job in establishing the Vet Program and ensuring that it works well and meets the needs of our students. i thank mrs macKenzie for her hard work and commitment over the last few years and i wish her and her family all the very best as she moves into this next stage of her life.
i am very pleased to say that we have appointed mrs yasemin Ziada to take over from mrs macKenzie. mrs Ziada comes highly qualified to deliver the Vet Hospitality program as well as teach the Foods program and she comes highly recommended. i wish mrs Ziada a very positive entry into our learning community.
Farewell
Also at the end of this term we will farewell Deb Potts who has been the Receptionist at eltham High school for the past three years.
Deb has been an exceptional support to the school by greeting visitors, directing telephone enquiries, producing the weekly school newsletter and managing many other school communications.
we wish her well in her future career path and sincerely thank her for dedicated commitment to the school during this time.
School Working Bee
A big thank you to all the families that attended the working Bee on sunday, 20 march. there was a great deal achieved through a strong, collaborative approach. in particular, i wish to thank the young people that attended and made the day even more enjoyable; some of which came on their own to contribute to this wonderful community spirit that exists within our school. As always, i commend the work of the Grounds Committee without whose hard work, planning and insight, we could not have achieved what we did. A special mention of the maintenance crew, Ben and Rhys who were on duty for the entire morning. thank you!
End of Term
it is hard to believe that we have actually come to the end of term 1. whilst this has been a relatively short term, it has been a very busy one. irrespective of the length of the term, everything that needs to happen within the term has to be done. the year has begun calmly and smoothly and, as always, the pace has developed cross the term.

Your tutor
this week students in year 10 and year 12 had the opportunity to hear about a product freely available to them for 2016 called ‘your tutor’. students in year 9 and year 11 will be introduced to the service during the first week of term 2.
your tutor is an online service designed to support students in their learning by connecting them with tutors. once students have registered they are able seek assistance at any time between 3:00 and 10:00pm. when clicking on the ‘Connect’ service they will generally be connected to a tutor online within a few minutes and can then spend as long as they need to receive personalised support in their learning.
tutors are available to support students in the areas of english, mathematics and the sciences as well as with their literacy and numeracy skills which will assist students across all of their subject areas. the service is not designed to provide students with ‘answers’ but to provide tailored support to help them get ‘un-stuck’- when they need it. Also included is a writing review service where students are able to submit drafts of their writing and receive feedback on their work within a 24 hour period.
tutors are professional, carefully selected and work under the guidance and supervision of your tutor. this ensures the service is safe and supportive for students.
while this is a commercial product, eltham High school has been lucky enough to be selected alongside a number of other schools in our area to be sponsored by melbourne Polytechnic. this sponsorship will allow students in years 9 - 12 to access the complete service for the duration of 2016 at no cost. students need only collect a your tutor - Activation Card from their sub-school office and get started straight away.
i encourage you to access the your tutor website to find out more about the service at www.yourtutor.com.au should you have any queries or feedback regarding the service i also encourage you to contact me here at school. we see this as a positive opportunity for our students and i would lastly like to thank melbourne Polytechnic www.melbournepolytechnic.edu.au for making it possible.
Skateboard Storage
new skateboard storage is in the process of being finalised and will be based in the Bike shed. From the beginning of term 2 students will be required to store their skateboards in the Bike shed instead of in the Junior school office.
skateboards will be able to be stored securely using a combination padlock that can be used to lock the skateboard to the rack. students will be able to leave the lock attached to the skateboard rack.
As of term 2 students will not be able to store their skateboards in the Junior school office. to ensure that they can store their skateboard securely, students will be required to supply a combination lock for their personal use.

New Eltham High Careers Website
At eltham High school Pathways and transition is an important part of your child’s educational experience.
As such i would like to announce the creation of an eltham High school web based career support site.
it can be accessed at www.elthamhighcareers.com with the majority of menu links open access. However, there is also a dedicated student area where your child can create an account and take advantage of various activities and production tasks. in there you will find interest and occupations quizzes, a resume format, digital portfolio access and many more useful tools. when your child creates their account have them use their school email address and a password will be generated for them.
the site has information for all year levels with the full functionality of the site becoming more appropriate as students move into year 9. the student account remains accessible across the life of your child’s high school life.
i would encourage you to have a look at the site and if there are any questions regarding its use please feel free to conatct me on 9430 5113 or at [email protected]

Perfect autumn working conditions prevailed for the 50 parents, students, past parents and teachers who attended the second working Bee for the year on sunday. All tasks planned were addressed in a comprehensive manner. thanks to all those who attended this event, especially the Grounds Committee members who supervise tasks and provision volunteers with morning tea and barbeque lunch.
Listed below are the tasks that were completed on sunday.
•A u-shaped sleeper retaining wall was constructed around the mosaic memorial on the Bell street fence. sleeper tops will be affixed at the next working Bee. our thanks to marcus Drakes who supplied a post hold digger for this job.
•120 new plants were assigned new homes in a variety of locations; the internal courtyard of the 100’s, the central courtyard and the area adjacent to the cricket nets.

•A significant amount of pruning and weeding was completed on the north side of the 400’s block. it now looks very neat the tidy.
•Brush cutting and mowing was completed in a range of locations across the campus precinct.
