Important Dates

Sat, 19 November Parents' Association End of Year DinnerFri, 2 December Year 5 STEAM Day / Year 9 Reflection dayFri, 9 December Last day for studentsMon, 12 December Parent/Teacher Interviews Years 7-10

Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Staff,

As the year draws to a close and we all look forward to the holidays it is an opportune time to reflect and be thankful for all of the hard work and initiatives that have taken place over the course of the Term. Indeed in the lead up to Christmas it is important that we remind ourselves of the many gifts and opportunities that we have all been given and be thankful for them. If we do this Christmas can be an opportunity to ‘want’ less and focus on what we ‘need’ more. The notion of gratitude is going to be a focus area for all year groups in our pastoral care structure for 2017. The article below helps

From the Deputy Principal us to reflect upon how being grateful can lead to positive wellbeing.

Farewell

As a College we farewell Mr Chris Zang, our Information and Communication Support Officer. As we reflect on gratitude, there is much we are grateful for as we say goodbye to Mr Zhang. He has been a valued member of the College community since 2010 and has helped and supported both staff and students in all areas of ICT. Mr Zang will be missed but we wish him every success in his future endeavours.

Thank you for your support and co-operation.

A Dose of Gratitude: How Being Thankful Can Keep You Healthy

Written by Robin Madell, Medically Reviewed by George Krucik, MD, MBA on October 10, 2012

What if there was a solution to stress so simple that it involved nothing more than feeling thankful for the good things in your life? In fact, there is. That solution is called gratitude.

Studies have shown that people who regularly practice feeling thankful have a leg up when it comes to their health. Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at the University of California at Davis, has been a leading researcher in this growing field, termed “positive psychology.” His research has found that those who adopt an “attitude of gratitude” as a permanent state of mind experience many health benefits.

Emmons’ findings, along with those from other researchers such as Lisa Aspinwall, a psychology professor at the University of Utah, suggest that grateful people may be more likely to:

• take better care of themselves physically and mentally

• engage in more protective health behaviors and maintenance

• get more regular exercise

• eat a healthier diet

• have improved mental alertness

• schedule regular physical examinations with their doctor

• cope better with stress and daily challenges

• feel happier and more optimistic

• avoid problematic physical symptoms

• have stronger immune systems

• maintain a brighter view of the future

With that list of benefits, who wouldn’t want to try it? To get started giving thanks, consider integrating some of the steps below into your daily life.

Focus Attention Outward

Your attitude plays a large role in determining whether you can feel grateful in spite of life’s challenges. According to Emmons, gratitude is defined by your attitude towards both the outside world and yourself. He suggests that those who are more aware of the positives in their lives tend to focus their attention outside of themselves.

Be Mindful of What You Have

You may assume that those with more material possessions have more to be grateful for. However, research suggests otherwise. Edward Diener, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois, found that a high percentage of affluent people in Japan report low levels of life satisfaction, just as those

living in poverty in India do. These findings suggest that it’s not how much you have, but how you feel about what you have that makes the difference.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

Recording what you feel grateful for in a journal is a great way to give thanks on a regular basis. Emmons found that those who listed five things they felt grateful for in a weekly gratitude journal reported fewer health problems and greater optimism than those who didn’t. A second study suggests that daily writing led to a greater increase in gratitude than weekly writing.

Reframe Situations as Positive

It’s not actually a challenging situation that is upsetting. It’s how you perceive the situation. The next time you find yourself complaining about life’s hassles, see if you can mentally “flip the switch” to frame things differently. For example, rather than getting down about missing an opportunity, try to see the positive side. You might now have more time to direct towards other priorities.References:

Dear Parents, Carers and Students of the St Clare’s Community.

Thank you for your ongoing support of learning at St Clare’s.

Best wishes and prayers.

Posing relevant questions to show a clear understanding of textWhen answering a question, for example, “How is…?”, or when responding to a task, such as “Explain why…”, an effective way of showing a clear understanding is to address the key instructional and content words of that question/task, within your topic (introductory) sentence. For instance, you might be asked this question:

Why is learning so important?

Consequently, your topic sentence, as a preview of the rest of your paragraph, or your extended response, could look like this:

Learning is so important for numerous reasons.

However, posing, or asking, a relevant question is another effective way of demonstrating a clear comprehension of text. For example, you might encounter this topic sentence:

There is a compelling argument that the New Guinea campaign was the most treacherous of World War II.

Subsequently, you could pose the following relevant question, given that an arguments-based answer, or an arguments-based response, relates specifically to ‘justify’. For instance:

What was the most treacherous campaign of World War II? Justify your answer.

Title: Suburban Dreaming Scale: 25 canvas paintings 153 x 153cm total Our population is ever growing, causing a mass expansion within our suburban areas. Sydney’s suburbs feature a vast array of medium density domestic dwellings. The lack of aesthetic consideration in these architectural forms has created an austerity and ugliness in our streetscapes. By exploring my local area and my investigations into the works of Peter O’Doherty and Howard Arkley, I began to discover a hidden beauty in the facades of these post-war apartment blocks. Through my artwork I have reinterpreted the ugliness of these buildings reminiscent of my childhood into surfaces of beauty.

CGSSSA Water Polo Senior

On Wednesday 2 November, St. Clare’s Senior Water Polo team represented our school at the NSWCCC Championships. They had a great day at Homebush and won two of their four games to finish equal second in their pool.

The photo says it all as everyone jumped in the spa pool after pulling off the upset of the day against Monte. Tilly launched a rocket shot from over half way with 2 seconds left on the clock to win the game!

Our girls' attitudes and sense of community were beyond reproach and we are setting the standard for other schools to follow.

A big thanks to Macka and Rose (Ella) for volunteering to go in the goals. Go St. Clare’s, go...

Coach Cotterill

A special thanks must go to Mr Cotterill for his time and commitment at training on both days. Sir provided our school and girls with a great opportunity training with the Ascham teams. His expertise, guidance and coaching brilliance in Water Polo are much appreciated but most importantly we love his bright, positive spirit and energy.

Year 10 Food Tech Cakes

I would like to acknowledge the creative work of Year 10 Food Technology classes in the creation of these outstanding cakes.

Students were given a design brief to create a cake for a birthday/celebration and the end results were amazing. Students learnt many new skills such as working with fondant, piping and presentation skills. Congratulations on these outstanding works of edible art I am sure they tasted as good as they look!

CGSSSA Aquathon

A new CGSSSA event is the Aquathon which consists of a combined run and swim, either individually or in pairs.

St Clare's entered this event for the first time in 2016, taking a team out to Merrylands Swimming Centre for the day.

And what a great day we had! Overall, our team placed second at this carnival, on the back of some outstanding results from our girls.

We placed third in the senior individual, with Andi Illidge running the required 4km and 400m swim.

Paris Tier and Madi Argy won the junior event, backed up by Emma Fitzgerald and Bellamy Brown who placed second.

The girls are certainly excited about training for next year's event.

Year 10 Careers Day

Thursday 11 November the Year 10 cohort took part in a new careers initiative for their PDHPE assessment. The task was to prepare the students for future challenges.

The girls researched a job of interest and then attended a workshop that taught how to set up and write a resume with a letter of application. The final part of the task was a formal mock interview.

The students were outstanding and many demonstrated the normal nervous emotions felt prior to an interview. The Interviewers were from Champagnat College, Coca-Cola Amatil , Hudson Recruitment, Notre Dame University, Sydney Catholic Schools, financial services, and the Australian Defence Force. The feedback from the professionals was extremely positive.

Amy Yates, Director of recruitment from Hudson Asia Pacific Region commented:

“It was my absolute pleasure to be part of the day. I think that as educators it was wonderful to see the

school start to prepare their students from an early age for the working world. It was fascinating to meet 16 year old girls and to see how they were building confidence, starting to become aware of the world outside their community and how there are so many possibilities – it was delightful.

In my career I have been lucky enough to work in multiple roles, had the opportunity to travel all over the world and been privileged to meet some incredible people in all manner of careers. And what I would say about all of them is that school never defined the final outcome of success (with success having different meanings for different people of course) and that all the things you learn whilst at school and living with your parents - from your moral compass to your work ethic are all vital building blocks to the person you will become but there is no “lid” and anything is possible."

Great advice! This was an authentic learning experience for the Year 10 cohort.

Please continue to use the resources available to the girls www.jobjump.com.au password : sccw.
