Year 3 Online Instructions Summer 2 – Week 4 - Monday 22.06.20

Hello Year 3 Children and Parents,

We hope everyone is keeping well. We hope you have had a chance to check out our fabulous new school

website! If you haven’t explored it recently, please make sure you have a look. Here’s the link to the Year 3

These weekly instructions are also kept on our year group page so you can always refer to these via the

BGS website to help you with your home learning. Remember to look out for all the extra activities that

have been posted by the PSHE team, Sylvia (Spanish), Danni (Art), Elena (Singing), Makeda (P.E) and lots

more! We hope that you will have a go at some of these as well as completing the work we set for you.

● Everyday:

o 30 minutes of Reading

o 15 minutes of handwriting practice: practise your handwriting by writing your spellings

into your purple handwriting book and then write a series of sentences including each of

your spelling words. Remember to use perfect punctuation! You could also try copying out a

poem or rhyme.

o 15 minutes of times tables practice: either play card games and/or play times table games

on Purple Mash.

Practise your 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 times table. When you are confident with these, move on to your

6s and 8s.

o 15 minutes of spelling practice for the weekly spelling test which is detailed below.

We expect you to practise your spellings as you normally would, therefore the spelling

test will be open from Thursday onwards. This will give you time to learn the words

before you take the test.

o Reading Blog: A blog is a way of sharing information and opinions. When you log onto

Purple Mash, click on the ‘Sharing icon’ and then on ‘Shared Blogs’ there you will see

‘Redbridge Reading Blog’ or ‘London Bridge Reading Blog’ or ‘Putney Bridge Reading Blog’

click on your class to access it

This week please continue with your weekly blogging. We will be checking the blog

regularly in order to approve posts. We will only approve posts that have been checked first

for punctuation and spelling. Some prompts to help you:

- Who is the author/ illustrator?

- Why you liked/ disliked about the book?

- Who was your favourite character? / What was your favourite part?

- Would you recommend it to a friend and why?

Please click the green add button in the top right corner to create your post.

We will be asking you to create a review of what you have read each week. Once you have written

your own review, you could have a go at writing some positive comments on other people’s posts.

Purple Mash reading activity:

This week you will either be continuing the reading of Magic in the Moonlight (Chapter 5) or Mary Anning

& The Time Twister (Chapter 3).

o You will find a 2do quiz linking you to the chapter so please read the text carefully twice before

attempting to answer the questions.

o There are also some optional questions for the Mary Anning text for you to complete below too – this

will be good practise using the text to answer open ended and sequencing questions.

Mary Anning & The Time Twister offline questions

o Spelling: The spellings for this week are below. We have set a ‘Spelling Test 2do’ on Purple Mash.

Please make sure that you practise the spellings on paper each day, as instructed above. Please DO NOT

take the 2do test until you are confident with the spellings. The spelling test 2do will open from

Thursday. Please take the time to learn your spellings!

PLEASE NOTE – This week the spelling words will not flash up on the screen. Instead you will need to

press the sound button to hear the spelling word that you are being tested on. Make sure the sound on

your computer or tablet is turned up!

We will be giving you a grammar activity to carry out every week from here on. Many of these will be

activities which you can find on BBC Bitesize. BBC Bitesize has a large catalogue of short 'lessons’ that you

can work through at your own leisure during your home-learning. What’s great is that each ‘lesson’ starts

with a short video clip to help you, followed by an interactive activity. We’d recommend you check out the

Maths and ‘Other’ activities in your own time, but if possible, wait for us to set you the English activities.

This Week’s Grammar Task: Fact and Opinion

The link below will take you to this week’s grammar task. Begin reading from the top of the page and then

watch the short video which will describe the difference between fact and opinion in more detail. After

that, answer the three questions (in your blue book using punctuation and neat handwriting). Then carry

out Activity 1 (online) and Activity 2 (by writing out the sentences neatly in your blue book and labelling

them as either – fact or opinion).

Interview with Mary Anning

This week, your writing task is again based on the text many of you are reading - Mary Anning and the Time

Twister. But if you’re reading Magic in the Moonlight, don’t worry you will still take part as our focus is

Mary Anning (who we all learnt about in the Autumn term).

We would like you to imagine that you have been given the opportunity to interview Mary Anning and

come up with 5-6 questions that you would ask her if you could.

You will see on Purple Mash 2do titled: Interview with Mary Anning. Please use this template to write out

your questions. In the answer box we would like you to write out the answer you think she would have

given. Some of these should be fact-based and others will be opinion-based (grammar starter link). Use the

internet to research information for your questions which are fact-based.

To help you, here is an example of a fact-based question (and answer) and an opinion-based question (and

answer).

Fact-based question: How old were you when you found your first fossil?

Answer (researched from the internet): “I am not entirely sure, but I believe I was between 10 and 12 years

old. I was very young that’s for sure!”

Opinion-based question: How did you feel when you found your first fossil?

Answer (inferred/made-up): “I felt very proud. I couldn’t wait to show my father. I remember running all

the way home, as I was so excited to see his reaction!”

Please use marking ladder (on the next page) to help you complete the work (and make sure you’ve met all

the success criteria before you ‘hand in’ your work.

Maths Column Subtraction

Activity 1: BBC Bitesize, Subtracting 3 digit numbers lesson

Following on from your work last week on addition we will be focusing on column subtraction this week.

Before you attempt any of the activities we would like you to do this short lesson on BBC Bitesize:

Activity 2: My Maths – Introducing Column Subtraction.

Please make sure you go through the ‘Lesson’ activities before doing the main task. This should preferably

be done with an adult.

Please make sure you use pencil and paper to help you work out the answers to the column subtraction

questions.

Activity 3: Offline Column Subtraction

Once you have been through the Bitesize lesson then please answer the following questions in your blue

books. You will see that the questions are organised in columns and get harder as you work through them.

Please start with the green column and then work through the orange questions. If you feel confident then

challenge yourself to have a go at the red ones.

As with your work last week, please make sure you set out your work neatly, lining up your Hundreds (H),

Tens (T) and Ones (O) columns carefully.

Activity 4: My Maths – Times Tables Practice

Please make sure you go through the ‘Lesson’ activities before doing the main task. This should preferably

be done with an adult.

NOT all. Please make sure you complete them in the order that they are listed.

We suggest spreading the work across the week, try to do a bit of maths everyday like we would at

school.

Online ICT Activity: 2Type

We are all so happy to hear just how many of you are thoroughly enjoying the 2Type course! We are confident this course will help you improve both accuracy and speed in your typing. This week you will continue with the course with a focus on ‘Left little finger’. We hope the activities bring you as much enjoyment and success as last week. Remember, before you complete any of the set 2dos, please always re-watch both introductory videos. These cannot be set as 2dos, so you will need to follow the below instructions again to re-watch them:

1. Go to the homepage of Purple Mash. 2. Type '2type' into the search bar and click ‘2type’ (the hand icon). 3. Watch the first two videos titled: Posture Tips and Typing Instructions. 4. One you have watched both videos have a go at the set 2dos in the order they are titled.

Geography/Art – Creating your own illustrated map of the UK

This week we’re merging art and geography and you are going to be using your knowledge of the UK and

its countries, cities and rivers. Using this knowledge and some additional research, we would like you to

draw an illustrated map of the UK.

You should follow these steps:

1. Draw an outline of the UK (remember there is an extra country just to the west – don't forget to

draw it in). If you find this tricky, you could print one out and trace around it or click on this link

2. Using research that you can do online, add the main countries in the UK and draw in their borders.

You could write each one in a different colour to make it stand out. Remember, countries are

usually written in bigger letters to stand out.

3. Find out where the capital cities are in each of these countries and add them to your map. These

are written in smaller letters than the countries but must still stand out.

4. Find out one or two facts about each capital city and use these facts to draw/illustrate your map.

For example, in London you could draw Big Ben or Houses of Parliament.

Challenge/Extension

Can you add the main river in each of the cities to your map?

Can you find Lyme Regis and add it to your map. Maybe you could do an extra drawing of

something related to Mary Anning in the right spot on your map.

Have a look at the maps below – although these maps show Europe and Spain, there are loads of great

ideas that can help you with your map of the UK.

Remember:

Use colour to bring your map to life. You

could use a different colour for different countries to

help show where the borders are and make your

rivers blue.

Remember to ensure that your cities are differentiated from your countries and put them in the

right location!

Have fun and maybe think of them as posters that you could put up in your bedroom or on the

display in school! They should be as creative and striking as you like.
