Thanks again for visiting with us, and may God continue to bless you

Some religious groups such as the Seventh Day
Adventists, Seventh Day Baptists and the United
Church of God teach that since God sanctified the
seventh day following creation (Genesis 2:3) and
included the command to “Remember the Sabbath Day
to keep it holy” in the Ten Commandments given to
Israel (Exodus 20:8), that those who worship God
today should worship on the seventh or Sabbath Day.
The claim is made that the Ten Commandments have
never been abolished or replaced and therefore the
command to remember the Sabbath is still in effect. It
is also claimed that the Roman Catholic Church
changed the Sabbath to the first day of the week. It is
further claimed that there is no passage in the New
Testament that commands or authorizes Christians to
assemble upon the first day of the week for worship.
Sabbath Given to Israel Deuteronomy 5:1-5
Within the reading of the above passage there is clear
evidence that Sabbath Day observance was not given
as a legal requirement until the giving of the Ten
Commandments at Horeb (Mt. Sinai) in the days of
Moses. It is clearly stated that “The Lord our God
made a covenant with us in Horeb.” The “us” is
further identified as “those who are here today, all of
us who are alive” and those to whom the Lord talked
with “face to face on the mountain….” In other words,
to Israel. To make it even clearer, Moses declared “the
Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers….”
Who are “our fathers?” The Israelites considered their
fathers as being Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (1 Chron.
29:18). “Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy”
was not a command given to Abraham, Isaac or Jacob
but only to Israel. We challenge the Sabbatarians to
reveal the scripture which says that Abraham, Isaac
and Jacob kept the Sabbath as Israel was commanded
to keep it.
SABBATH DAY KEEPING NO LONGER
RELEVANT
The claim that the Ten Commandments are still in
effect is a false claim. The Ten Commandments were
never intended by God to be universal in their
application. They applied only to the nation of Israel to
whom they were specifically given (Deut. 5:1-5). The
Sabbath command was to be obeyed to commemorate
the release of the Israelites from Egyptian bondage.
“And remember that you were a slave in the land of
Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from
there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm;
therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep
the Sabbath day.” (Deuteronomy 5:15 NKJV). Since
no one living this side of the cross has been in
Egyptian bondage, how can a Sabbath Day observance
still be relevant?
SABBATH DAY KEEPING ABOLISHED
The Ten Commandments were written on stone tables
(Exodus 24:12; 31:18). In 2 Corinthians 3:7 the
inspired Paul described that which was “written and
engraved on stones” as “the ministry of death” as
contrasted with the “ministry of the Spirit” - “the
ministry of condemnation” (vrs. 9) contrasted with “the
ministry of righteousness” and as “that which is done
away” (vrs. 11) with that which “remains.” Clearly, the
teaching is that the Ten Commandments (written and
engraven in stones) no longer remain as binding
spiritual law, but have been replaced with something
more glorious—the New Testament of Jesus Christ!
The distinction made by Sabbatarians between the
“ceremonial law” and the “moral law” is not supported
by scripture. The Law of Moses and the Law of God
are one law inclusive of both the Ten Commandments
and all “ceremonial” aspects. (See Nehemiah 8:1, 8, 18
[Law of Moses and Law of God used interchangeably];
Malachi 4:4; John 7:23). Jesus took the entire law out
of the way by nailing it to His cross (Colossians 2:14-
16). He abolished the “law of commandments” in his
flesh and thereby eliminated the “middle wall of
separation” between Jew and Gentile. (Eph. 2:14-16).
If the command to “remember the Sabbath Day to keep
it holy” is in force, the wall of separation remains. If
one tries to be justified by keeping any part of the Law
given to Israel “he is a debtor to keep the whole law”
but in doing so he becomes “estranged from Christ”
and falls from God grace (Galatians 5:3-4).
