Well, what a few months it has been! We welcomed back Alice from maternity leave who is now
a Projects Officer for YC/YAC
We said goodbye to Lauren who is now working as a Teaching Assistant in a school. We
recruited to that post and I’m happy to announce that Mandy Brine will be the new Senior
Support Co-ordinator for Young Carers in Huntingdonshire. Mandy has worked for Carers Trust
for a while and brings with her lots of experience!
The Young Adult Carers support post has been enhanced and we are pleased to announce that
Nicky Hornsby from Cambridgeshire County Council will be joining us in June. Nicky brings a
huge amount of experience in working with young people and we are thrilled she is joining our
team.
We are recruiting for a Policy & Development Officer for the whole of YC/YAC service to support
us with campaigns and legislation and also recruiting new Sessional Workers. The service is
growing and we are trying to support as many Young Carers and Young Adult Carers as we
possibly can! We have been very successful with grants and donations and we are eternally
grateful to all the award funders and donators.
Carers Week is coming up, 8th to 14th June, and we have lots of
events for YC’s and YACs, so take a look on page three and go along
if you can.
It was recently our Charity Ball and we were thrilled that some Young
Adult Carers and Young Carers joined us for the evening. It was
fantastic. We scrubbed up well too and we had a great evening.
We handed a petition in at the Department of Education for a
Fairstart for Young Carers. This was national petition and we felt
very honoured to be asked to represent the network. Our summer
programme is almost finalised so watch this space. As every year,
places are limited so make sure if you want to go you send in your consent forms.
We have so much news it is time for me to stop and let you read on. Again, I want to thank the
team; they work incredibly hard to do as much as they can for Young Carers and Young Adult
Carers!
If you have any news stories or ideas for funding, please send them in.
This is your newsletter so would be great to hear from you all!

Hidden 2015
In the last edition, we reported that two of our Young Carer Champions had their portraits taken
and included in a national exhibition in London.
The event was a huge success and many hundreds visited the week long exhibition.
Alex Wicks, one of the YC Champions included in the exhibition writes:
“I was recently invited to be part of a Young Carers in Focus (YCiF)
portrait exhibition called ‘Hidden’.
I went to the exhibition at The OXO Tower Wharf in London with another
Young Carer Champion from Peterborough and my Project Worker and
whilst I was there I was also able to meet with a variety of other Young
Carers from all across the country.”
At the exhibition there was lots of famous people attending, such as Dick and Dom and Jade
Ewen from the Sugababes. I was surprised to find out that Jade’s dad was blind, and so I was
able to relate to that because my dad is blind as well.
All of the pictures for the exhibition were all taken by a photographer

We've been looking at a range of topics since the last newsletter including finances, goals and aspirations, identity and not forgetting a personal favourite Banana Art for Fairtrade. Sessions are open to all Young Adult Carers aged 16+ and if you are worried that you might have to leave your Young Carers group don't, YACs support is tailored to your needs, to support your transition and accessed when you need it. It is also a great additional pathway to involve yourself in other projects, such as Take the Lead, and targeted work. It's rather fun too if we say so ourselves!!!
Take the Lead
The final stage of this innovative and inspirational new project will soon be upon us with interviews for the internship taking place shortly but let's have a look back at what was achieved in the run up to this point. 9 Young Adult Carers embarked on a revolutionary new project. Undertaking a mixture of development awareness and knowledge sessions, a 3 day residential and 1:1 support these young people were able to develop new skills, identify those they had already and push themselves through
challenges they didn't think they could complete. Everything learned and reinforced was then used to strengthen or create their CVs and enhance personal statements for future employment or educational use. Bethany West said about the project so far "it has helped me to develop my leadership skills something I will be needing to use now in college to designate group roles in my final exams.” We wish everyone going for the internship Good Luck! And well done to all that shared the journey so far.
