Yarm Preparatory School Issue 519
Friday 25th November 2016
Head’s Message . . . It has been excellent to chat with many parents this week during our
Parents’ Evenings. I hope that the meetings have given you an
opportunity to discuss with your child the progress they have made of late. It is equally important that we
also reinforce the targets for development that have been shared. There will always be an element of
next steps in the educational journey and growth of a well-rounded child, it is therefore important we
empower them in this regard and nurture their talents. The busy nature of the school and our
expectations set a high bar for our pupils, but with continued application and endeavor progress of all
kinds will follow. This is an important message which we must share with our children; it will foster a
positive mindset and take them far in life.
I apologise for the disruption caused this week due to our email system being offline for a number of days.
We have been working hard to rectify this and hope to back up and running very soon. Should you need
to contact the school or your child’s class teacher please call us on 01642 781447.
Please note that I will be out of school next week from Wednesday through to Friday. Should you need to
contact me please leave a message with Miss O’Hara who I will be in regular contact with.
Head’s Challenge: If you balanced a broom horizontally on your finger, so that your finger was exactly on
the broom's center of gravity, marked that spot and cut the broom in two, then you would have a long
and a short piece. The long piece being most of the handle and the short piece being the bristle end and a
small part of the handle. Now what will happen if you weigh both pieces? Choose which of the following
statements is true. A) The short piece will weigh more. B) The long piece will weigh more. C) Both will
weigh the same.

Charlotte’s haircut for Little Princess Trust
A huge well done to Charlotte who has recently had her hair cut and donated it to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes then donates real hair wigs to children (girls and boys) who have lost theirs. It was all her own idea having had a friend who did the same a few months
ago. We think Charlotte’s new haircut looks fabulous!

Prep School attend Newcastle Falcons v Exeter Chiefs
I really enjoyed the part when we got
to go onto the pitch before the match
and wave our flags whilst the players
ran on the pitch. The dry ice was
shooting up into the air.
Eleanor L, 5J
On Friday 18th November some of us
went to Kingston Park home of the
Newcastle Falcons. We watched care-
fully but the Falcons didn't win Exeter.
The final score was 19-32 to Exeter. It
was very fun.
Dhruv W, 4S
My favourite thing about the Newcastle
Falcons was when they took all the
penalties. I also liked the tackling. The
food was so warm and nice but there
was so, so much so I just got the chips.
Jake L, 4S
The rugby trip was a fun trip. Newcastle
Falcons lost32-19. They were playing
Exeter Chiefs. It was a fun experience.
There were a lot of people in the seats
watching.
Shola A, 4P
I really enjoyed watching the
Newcastle Falcons. It was really fun.
Sadly they got beaten 19-32.
Elise M, 5P
My favourite part of the rugby was
when Newcastle Falcons scored
their first try of the game.
Paras C, 4P
I really enjoyed watching the rugby
match. My favourite team was the
Newcastle Falcons.
Edward L, 3H
My favourite part of the
Falcons game was that we
got to go onto the pitch.
Sam S, 3A
We went to see Newcastle Falcons play
Exeter. It was really fun. I really
enjoyed it especially the food and the
seats. Alex C, 4S
Year 6 Maths
For last week’s homework we had to plan a ten minute lesson to teach two—
three Year 4 pupils.
We had to give a ten minute lesson about equivalent fractions. I was partnered
with Matthew. We taught three Year 4’s, two boys and one girl.
First we asked them if they knew what fractions were. They knew way more
than we anticipated. We pitched the lesson to their levels.
We ran over the details quickly making sure that they understood the
definitions of fraction, denominator and numerator and concentrated on
explaining the concept of equivalent fractions. For that I used a paper model of
a pizza divided into eight pieces.
Matthew brought in one worksheet so that the pupils could practise what they
had learned. I offered sweets as a reward for good work at the end of the
lesson. I think that the pupils enjoyed the lesson. I enjoyed teaching the lesson
because I had a chance of improving their knowledge of maths.
Sophia K, 6M
For last weeks homework we had to plan a 10 minute lesson which we then
taught to Year 4 children. The aim of the lesson was to teach a Year 4
equivalent fractions. To demonstrate this we used chocolate , jaffa cakes and
paper pizza. We quartered the treats and told them to find the equivalent
fraction for example we halved the jaffa cake.

Anti-Bullying Week
A selection of the cartoons and comments made by Year 4, addressing bullying scenarios. Cartoon by Jake M. (4J).
If you are getting bullied tell a
teacher and they will help you sort it
out. Bullying is calling you names or
making comments.
Hannah W, 4P
Bullying is when someone up-
sets or hurts someone else.
There are different types of bul-
lying, cyber bullying, physical
bullying and hurting your feel-
ings.
Noah F, 4P
Bullying is when something is done on
purpose to hurt others.
Teddy K, 4P
Bullying is one of the worst things that
conquers our countries schools. One
example of bullying is repetitively
taunting the same person many times.
Luckily there are heaps of adults that
will stop bullying in a heartbeat.
Annabel C, 4P
If you are being bullied, tell a
teacher or anyone you trust.
Ayan T, 4P Some of the different types of
bullying are cyber bullying—
where someone sends you
something repetitively on the
phone that hurts you.
Lola V, 4P
Bullying is when somebody repeat-
edly does something mean.
Millie C, 4P Bullying is when someone does some-
thing over and over again.
Amelia S, 4P Never bully someone!
If they bully you then don’t bully
them back.
If someone bullys you tell them to
stop, if they don’t then tell a
teacher.
Poppy B, 4P
Bullying means deliberately
hurting someone repetitively.
The best way to stand up for
yourself is to tell a
teacher/parent/guardian or
peer mentor.
Nawaal A, 4P
To stand up to a bully you can tell a
teacher or peer mentor, or if it is really
bad then you should tell your parents.
Oscar S, 4P
4S Assembly
This is my loss
It was very sad but now it is not as bad, I used to have a dog named Tiger, Round and round we would run, it was fun, I would remember, he would bark telling me and my family someone was here, The person would fear, Sadly one night a horrible disease came, And took hold of my dog, We took him to the vets, three weeks later he had gone, As days passed we eventually moved on, Not everything can live forever, In fact nothing can live forever, So when something you love dies you cannot complain, Because everything has a beginning and an end, And just remember they’ll always be with you as a friend.
Kaaman B, 6G
Last week , which was very fun, we were learning our lines for our
celebrity filled, most fun packed assembly EVER about Children in
Need.
When it came to the big day you could tell that everyone was
really nervous, but luckily it all went to plan and we all
remembered our lines.
IT WAS AMAZING!!!
Alice W, 4S
Last Friday we did our assembly. It was
about Children in Need. Most of us
dressed up as bears. We all enjoyed doing
the play. You could probably guess that
Mrs Craven enjoyed getting the famous
singer correct, Leona Lewis. Most of the
children and teachers took part in the quiz.
It was such a fun day.
Oliver H, 4S
Last Friday we did a class assembly and
the theme was Children in Need
because it was Children in Need day.
Everyone thought it was brilliant.
Zeph A-T, 4S
Our assembly was
about Children in
Need. Some people in
our assembly were
celebrities for example
Jamie Oliver and Selina
Gomez.
Rose T, 4S I enjoyed our school play, I was
narrator 2. We learnt all our lines in 1
week. My line was 2nd in the play.
When the characters came on I was
seeing if my friends could answer the
questions but none of them did. At
the end we did a prayer. I loved the
play.
Neve B, 4S
I enjoyed the class assembly which we did.
It was really fun. I was narrator 1 and
narrator 12. When performing I felt a little
bit of stage fright but when I had done it I
felt very happy.
Avanish B, 4S
I really enjoyed our class assembly. I was nervous at the start but
then I enjoyed it. I hope everyone enjoyed it. Tenuk M, 4S
Last week it was 4S’

perform in front of the
whole school.

Staying Safe Online
A common theme in PSHE lessons and discussions
with pupils of late is how to stay safe online. As
well as our Internet Safety Week in February,
when all parents are provided with an internet
safety guide, all year groups talk about and use the
internet in a safe and sensible manner in their
weekly computing lessons. For example, Year 5
have recently been searching for rights-free
images related to their platform game projects. In
Year 6, the pupils will be using Edmodo in their
computing lessons over the coming weeks and
months. Edmodo is a learning platform that looks
not too dissimilar to Facebook, but is used as a safe
and monitored social networking experience. The
children will be using Edmodo to work
collaboratively as they develop their smartphone
apps. Mr Stone

Respect
Respect is where someone shows that they are nice to people and they can look up to somebody else. They can also look after
other people, their belongings and the environment. We have been talking about respect in assemblies this week. The school
captains devised the ‘Respectacles’, which can be used by any class. When you wear the Respectacles, you have to talk about
a time when you have shown respect, or how we as a school can show respect to each other.

Lost Property
Miss Redhead and Mr Jackson are carrying out a sterling job when it comes to lost property found in and around the school.
There are, however, still a number of items that have gone missing and have not returned. Please can we ask that you check
all kit bags and cupboards at home and if something does not belong to your child, please return it to the lost property shed
on the playground. Thank you.
