Principal’s Report Teacher Professional Learning - Use of Data to Inform Practice In a review by international education experts of the world’s top performing systems, a consistent finding was that the best systems all use effective assessment and data to drive improvement. At Terrey Hills our focus is to equip all teachers to use data effectively to lift students’ performance and ensure continued improvement. Research indicates:

• Effective analysis of student data helps teachers identify areas in which students’ learning needs may require additional attention and development.

• Data can also help teachers see which students may be struggling to engage with particular learning areas, and understand which students respond better to different teaching approaches in their classroom.

• High quality assessment practice is crucial for effective data analysis of student outcomes and wellbeing.

This week Mrs Renwick shared her deep pedagogical content knowledge in how she uses Bump It Up strategies to assist her in designing ongoing classroom assessments that are frequent, high quality and have clear and consistent marking criteria.

Certificate Presentation Assembly Years 3-6 The Certificate Assembly is being held on Friday 29 November commencing at 2.00pm in the hall. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge student achievement in extra curricula programs across the school.

K-2 and 3-6 Presentation Day Presentation Day is an opportunity for all students to be part of celebrating a year of excellence. Our 3-6 and K-2 Presentation Day Assemblies will be held on Friday 13th December in the school hall. Teachers have finalised the names of students who will be recognised at the assembly - selection of these students from each class is the hardest decision each teacher makes in a year. Whilst we would love to reward every child, the day is about identifying students who have excelled, shown consistent commitment to learning/leadership/citizenship/arts/sports or shown significant improvement over the year. The very notion of an awards event is that there will be many students who are acknowledged and many more who will not. Knowing and accepting this is a wonderful life-long skill. We look forward to seeing many parents and friends at the assembly. Times: Years 3-6 Presentation Day - 9.30am K-2 Presentation Day – 2.00pm Our Volunteers are Highly Valued The relationship between students and their teachers is critically important. The link between home and school also contributes to positive outcomes for our children but the role that parents and other members of the community play when volunteering their time, expertise and effort to support our school is very significant. On behalf of all staff and students, I would like to thank the many volunteers who have assisted throughout the year.

Leaving our school? Extended holidays? We have now actively commenced the school planning process for 2020. It is very important that we are able to determine an accurate number of school enrolments as this number impacts directly on the classes we form in 2020.

If you have a child enrolled in Years K-5 who will be moving from our school at the end of this year, please write a note or email the school with the details. The same applies if your child will have a delayed start to the new school year due to an extended holiday.

2020 Return to School Dates

• Staff Development Day Tuesday 28, January 2020 – no students at school • Students in Years 1-6 return on Wednesday 29, January 2020 • Best Start Interviews for Kindergarten – Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31, January 2020 • Kindergarten students commence school on Monday 3 February, 2020

Student News Congratulations to Max P for taking the initiative in organising Tech Deck Thursday’s for Years 2-6 Students. Max had noticed a number of students were bringing their ‘Tech Decks’ to school and thought it would be a good idea to organise a space and time for students to share and build their skills.

Year 6 Fete

A big thank you to all parent helpers and our Year 6 students who made last Thursday’s School Fete such a celebratory experience. There were smiles and laughs a plenty with students K-6 participating in games, crafts and chill zones. Parents assisted throughout a range of activities including negotiating gifts and cakes on the White Elephant Stalls as well help out at the BBQ and many other stalls. Thanks to your generosity that raised approximately $2000 that will go towards a Year 6 gift. Special thanks to the many parents who came to help our year 6 students on the day. We couldn’t have done it without you!

The 20 Little Pigs by K Ladybugs Once upon a time there were 20 little piglets. Their names were Piggy Sam B, Piggy Freya, Piggy Miles, Piggy Sam D, Piggy Khalil, Piggy Levi, Piggy Nathan, Piggy Isabelle, Piggy Veronica, Piggy Lucas, Piggy Carmela, Piggy Charlie, Piggy Tom, Piggy Monty, Piggy Harrison, Piggy Evie, Piggy Liam, Piggy Chianne, Piggy Vincent and Piggy Jessica. They went to Terrey Hills Piglet School and they were taught by their teacher Piggy Walker. One day Principal Piggy Bruce said to all the students “our school is too small, it is time for you all to go and build new classrooms.” So all the teachers took their students off to build their new classrooms.

The Kindy’s went off with their Year 6 buddies, the Year 1 and 2 piglets went together and the Year 3, 4 and 5 piglets went together too. The Year 3, 4 and 5 piglets were walking along when they found a farmer who had huge bales of straw. They thought straw would be the perfect thing to build a classroom from. So they quickly started and before long they were all in their classrooms, ready to learn. The Year 1 and 2 piglets headed into the woods and there they found a huge pile of sticks. They thought these would be perfect to build a classroom from. So they got started and before long their classrooms were ready too. Kindy and Year 6, thought about it. They decided that bricks would be the perfect thing to make their classroom from as they are waterproof and very strong. So they got started and they worked very hard and soon their classrooms were ready. Before long a big bad wolf came along. First he reached the classroom made from straw. He called out “Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in.” They all called back “not by the hair of our chinny chin chin.” So the wolf said “then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your classroom down.” So he huffed and he puffed and he blew the classroom down. The piglets all ran away to the classroom made from sticks. Before long the big bad wolf came along again. He called out “Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in.” They all called back “not by the hair of our chinny chin chin.” So the wolf said “then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your classroom down.” So he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed and he blew the classroom down. Now all the piglets ran to the classroom made from bricks. Before long the big bad wolf came along again. He called out “Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in.” They all called back “not by the hair of our chinny chin chin.” So the wolf said “then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your classroom down.” So he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed and he huffed and he puffed but he could not blow that classroom. The wolf didn’t know it, but Principal Piggy Bruce had been on the phone to the big bad wolf’s mum. His mummy was very mad at how naughty the big bad wolf had been. She turned up at school and she said “Wolfie, you’ve been a very naughty boy” and she took him home where he was in a lot of trouble and had to go into time out. Wolfie learnt his lesson and he never went back to Terrey Hills Piglet School ever again and all the Piglets lived happily ever after.

Terrey Hills Community Kindy Ukulele visit

Year 5/6 have been learning to play the Ukulele in Music Class. On Wednesday November 13th all the Year 5 students walked up to the Community Pre-School in Terrey Hills to give a concert for the pre-schoolers. Some of us saw our Buddies for next year there. We played nursery rhymes on our ukuleles and then we taught them how to play Row Row Row Your Boat. We shared morning tea and played games together. It was fun and the pre-schoolers all enjoyed it. So did Year 5! By Dia M

Well it’s a pretty even moustache competition so far! Watch this space next week to see how they progress.
