This year is the 25thanniversary of the birth ofthe Yamaha SR400, a mile-stone which has been com-memorated with the releaseof a special 25th anniver-sary special edition of thislong-selling model. In thisissue of Yamaha News wewill recount the story of theXT500 that was the prede-cessor to the SR400. Theother story we have comesfrom a participant in theworld-class SSDT trial com-petition in Scotland in May,where much attentionfocused on the Yamaha125cc 4-stroke poweredmodel called the ScorpaTYS125F. Both of these mod-els have roots that go backabout 30 years.

U.S. for testing in the actual race envi-ronment, which was in itself a newchallenge for Yamaha. And indeed, thetest data gained there was invaluable infine-tuning the machine’s perfor-mance. The threshold for endurancetesting was also upped 2.5 times thenormal level. Those tough tests at firstresulted in broken pistons and conrods,but the final product that emerged hada previously unprecedented level ofdurability that would make the XT500stand out from the rest. This is the XT500 that would beunveiled at the 1975 Tokyo MotorShow the following year. Also appear-ing at the Yamaha booth that year werea group of new machines like theDOHC 3-cylinder GX750, the DOHC4-valve 2-cylinder GX500 and the 2-stroke RD series models, all of whichsignaled the arrival of a new age ofmulti-cylinder motorcycles. But thisfact also served to focus even moreattention on the XT500 as a deliberatepursuit of single-cylinder enginepotential that ran against the trends ofthe day.

The 1974 development of aYamaha “Big Single” It was three decades ago in the autumnof 1974 that Yamaha engineers under-took the development of the XT500.The project leader at the time recallsthat the image they started with wasone of the Enduro races that werebeing held at the time in the wide-openspaces of America. Two machineswere developed simultaneously, theTT500 (code named the 043) con-ceived as an Enduro model, and theXT500 (code 043A). What the projectteam sought to do was basically tobring the exciting world of off-roadpotential that the 2-stroke DT-1 hadopened up into the 4-stroke category.The Enduro races that were being runin the wilderness and desert areas ofthe U.S. demanded machines withstrong engine torque. That is whatmade the big single format an obviouschoice. And, to make sure that themachines they were developing trulymet the needs of Enduro riding at avery high level, Yamaha’s develop-ment team sent their prototypes to the

famous Paris-Dakar rallies that areknown today as the world’s toughestrally. (As we introduced in our #5issue of Yamaha News in 2002, teamsled by Yamaha Motor France’s Presi-dent J-C Olivier would come to domi-nate this rally in later years.)This is the XT500 that would eventu-ally evolve into today’s XT600E, amodel that continues to be loved for itsdurability and glorious history of per-formance. Even today it remains themost popular model in the larger dis-placement class in places like southernEurope.

The SR and 25 years of answer-ing user needsSoon after the emergence of theXT500 in 1976, Yamaha began hear-

ing calls for an on-road model mount-ing the same big-single engine. Thiscall led to the birthof the SR400 and500 in 1978. Takingthe XT500 as theirbase, the SR modelsappeared with mod-ifications in the

intake and exhaust systems, the crankmass and the chassis components tomeet the needs of on-road riding. Withthe natural handling feeling derivingfrom the slender chassis design and theunique appeal of the distinctive enginepulse that only a big-single can pro-vide, the SR models soon won highpraise in countries around the world.The renowned German motorcyclemagazine Motorrad confirmed thispopularity by naming the SR its“Motorcycle of the Year.”Although these models stopped beingsupplied to Europe around 1995 afternearly a quarter century of continuedsales, their popularity remains high, asevidenced by the SR clubs still activein places like Germany. And sales con-tinue of the Japanese market modelstoday. The unchanging SR look andthe special flavor of the pulse that onlya single-cylinder engine can offer areamong the reasons for these models’undying popularity. Still, there were times during those 25years when the proposal came up tostop production. But, in the end theongoing SR popularity prevented itfrom happening. Even as the timesbrought high-performance develop-ments to the motorcycle industry, theSR has kept a place of its own with itssimple single-cylinder engine and clas-sic good looks. This is what won theusers, hearts and what made true fanswho wouldn’t let the SR die for allthose years. As the engineers whoactually worked on the development ofthe SR remind us, a big part of amaker’s responsibility is to constantlydevelop and introduce products withinnovative new technologies, butanother part is to protect models likethe SR that have won a devoted fol-lowing among the users. Theybelieved that the individuality of theSR is one more asset of the Yamahabrand, and an asset worth preserving. In today’s world where innovations inmechanisms and technologies often

When the XT500 went on sale the fol-lowing year, 1976, it quickly won highacclaim in markets everywhere. InColombia, in South America, it washailed as the “Rolls Royce of motorcy-cles.” And, what people inevitablypraised was its smooth and linearpower development characteristics andunique riding potential different fromthe multi-cylinder models. ThisXT500 also proved to be a winner inrally competitions. It soon became themachine of choice for French and Ital-ian riders competing in beach ralliesand the North African desert ralliesthat were becoming popular. When theParis-Senegal rally was held in 1979,Frenchman Cyril Neveu would win onan XT500. This would prove to be theinaugural competition of the now-

The 4-stroke makes its soundheard at the world’s top trialcompetitionOur second story comes from Scot-land, where a Yamaha 125cc enginebecame the focus of attention. TheScottish six days trial (SSDT) eventis one of the world’s leading trialcompetitions with a 100-year historyat the small town of Fort William onthe west coast of Scotland about 500kilometers north of London. Travel-ing over a total of about 150 km, thecompetitors must clear 30 sections ofnatural rock formations in a day. Thepaths they must travel between thesesections are also tough and the com-petition goes on for six days. The2003 holding of the six days trialgathered 280 top competitors fromcountries around the world in May,and one of the things that drew atten-

tion was a machine with an enginesound no one was used to hearing attrials events. This was the first event that saw a 4-stroke machine competing side-by-side with the conventional 2-stroketrial machines. The machine was theScorpa TYS125F prototype and as itpassed the gallery, it frequently drewappreciative comments from thespectators with its pleasing 4-strokeexhaust sound. In fact, the engine onthis model is basically the same

SOHC 125cc Yamaha engine thatfirst appeared on the TTR125 in2000. It may also be familiar tomany of our readers as the enginethat now powers the YBR125 beingproduced and sold in Brazil byYamaha Motor Do Brasil Ltda.(YMDB) and in China by JiangshuNanfang Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd.(YMJ), and also the “LIBERO”manufactured by Yamaha MotorIndia Private Ltd. (YMI). As a mat-ter of fact, it is the engine that pow-ers more Yamaha motorcycles, withthe exception of scooters, than anyother. The Scorpa prototype at the SSDTwas ridden by Takumi Narita (Japan)and Martin Crosswaite (UK), andthey were joined by Haruo Kimuraof the Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.(YMC) support staff from Japan. All

three riders finished the demand-ing six days of competition, withMartin placing an impressive20th overall, the highest finish byanyone in the under 200cc class.(The three competition classesare under 200cc, 200cc~250ccand over 250cc.) Besides these results, however,what attracted the attention tothis machine was its 4-strokesound. At one of the tougher sec-tions, when Kimura was about toskip part of it to make sure hecould finish the day, he was

greeted by an excited fan who said,“I’ve been waiting here all day justto hear the great sound of your 4-stroke.” Encouraged by this, Kimuramade another valiant attack on thesection once again to the cheers ofthe fans in the gallery. In a competi-tion where the 2-stroke sound haslong been the norm, the fans hadclearly found a new reason to cheer.

Kimura’s idea and the Scorpacompany

Challenge Spirit and the 2003 SSDT in Scotlandchange the face of products complete-ly, the history of the SR is an exampleof the art of not changing a good thing.But, that doesn’t mean that the SR hasnot continued to mature in importantways. Yamaha engineers have takenall the necessary steps to keep the SRin pace with the demands of new noiseand emissions regulations, while alsoimproving reliability in significantways. Still, these improvements havenever been allowed to change thatunique but unassuming SR look and itsdistinct flavor. That is why most peo-ple never even notice the SR’s ongoingmaturation.

SR Birthday CelebrationsConsidering how devoted SR fans are,it is no wonder that owners turned outfrom all over the country in unprece-dented numbers when events wereheld in Japan in May and June of thisyear to celebrate the models’ 25thbirthday. More than 3,000 peopleshowed up with 1,250 SR machinesfor the birthday meetings that wereheld in three locations around Japan,namely Yokohama, Kobe and Fukuo-ka. This represented an unprecedentedattendance for a meeting of this kindfor owners of a single model. Likeother events of this type, the ownersspent much of their time admiringeach other’s machines and buildingnew friendships. But there were alsoscenes that spoke of the unique loveowners have for the SR, like whenowners at the Yokohama event gottogether to present the representativesof the original SR development teamwith flowers as a token of their appre-ciation. Slimness and compactness are idealsthat Yamaha engineers have pursuedendlessly in their product developmentover the years, and perhaps few mod-els reflect this ideal better than the 30-year history that started with theXT500 and matured through theSR400 and 500.

There is an interesting story behindthe birth of this TYS125F prototype.It originated with an idea of Kimu-ra’s. “About three years ago, I hadmounted the engine from theTTR125 on a prototype machine andtested it out in a trial competition inJapan. At that time, I was surprisedat how well the torque-y, tough per-formance of the 4-stroke engine suit-ed trial competition. It had alsoaroused a lot of fan attention as amachine that looked light andtorque-full and one that almost any-one could feel comfortable with forcasual enjoyment of trial riding. Iwas hearing numerous people saythat Yamaha should make it into aproduction model,” Kimura recalls.That was enough to make him deter-mined to bring the great features ofthis engine to trial competition. Butthere were some issues that had to bedealt with in the developmentprocess. What engine specs would bebest? What factory could it be manu-factured at? Could the same settingsbe used?At that time, Yamaha was alreadysupplying the chassis constructorScorpa with its 250cc 2-stroke trial-

bike engines. Kimura got the idea topropose a 125cc 4-stroke modelbased on this working relationshipwith Scorpa. “The first thing I knewI should do was to get the people at

Scorpa to ride our 4-stroke prototype andexperience it forthemselves. I took itto a Japanese trialevent the year beforelast and had themtest ride it. The presi-dent of Scorpa triedit and loved it. Hetook off on a rideand didn’t comeback for the longesttime,” laughs Kimu-ra. That was the turn-ing point, and soonthe project gotunderway. It was eventuallydecided to have theengine for theTYS125F producedat the YMDB factory in Brazil and asystem was worked out to have theengines shipped to Minarelli in Italyand then to Scorpa in France forassembly of the finished machines.They say the orders are pouring infor this new production model thatgoes on sale this summer, and it willbe interesting to see if there are any

differences with the engine per-formance compared to theTTR125 or YBR125.

Reliability tested andproven in regions all overthe world“The carburetor retains the samesettings as the base engine. Theonly major difference is the gearratios which have been set withconsideration for the demands oftouring trial type competition tohave a closer ratio between 1st and2nd gears and a higher 5th gear.Over the six days of the recent

SSDT competition it has proven itselfto be a machine that can take every-thing from wet rock sections to high-speed transition legs with no problems.And, I think a lot of the credit goes to

the fact that it is powered by an enginethat has been matured and proven intough use conditions in all parts of theworld. I was convinced once againwhat a well-built and well-tuned powerunit this is,” comments Kimura. Looking back, Yamaha introduced itsfirst trial model, the TY250J, in 1973.It won the SSDT competition two con-secutive years in 1974 and ’75 riddenby Britain’s Mick “The Magician”Andrews. After that, Yamaha contin-ued to expand the market with theintroduction of the TY250R, TY250Zand the TY250 Scottish. But, due to anumber of factors, Yamaha is notbuilding any production trial bikes atthis time. Still, the fact that Scorpa isnow producing bikes with Yamahaengines is certainly an extension of theYamaha trial challenge that began 30years ago.

Colombia is a country of contrasts, charms and enchantments

Cartagena, a city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and an important maritime port

class, which has long beenthe pinnacle of internationalmotorcycle racing, has inreality been reborn as a com-petition of 4-stroke machines.Taking this occasion, the pre-sent exhibition has been put together to cel-ebrate the three glorious decades ofYamaha’s WGP challenge with the 2-stroke YZR500 that began with its firstappearance in 1973, and the spirit of theYamaha people who made history on thatgreat stage.

Looking back over the history of the WorldGP that began with the Isle of Man TouristTrophy race in Britain in 1949, the earlyyears were dominated by British single-cylinder 4-stroke machines by makers likeAJS and Norton. The mid-1950s saw theemergence of multi-cylinder machines byItalian makers like MV Agusta and Gilera.Beginning in 1956, MV Agusta would rulein the WGP for more than 15 years.It wasn’t until the 1960s that the fourJapanese makers began to take up the WGPchallenge, only to withdraw again in 1968.The first of the Japanese factories to returnto WGP racing would be Yamaha in 1973,entering the 500cc class for the first timewith a 2-stroke machine, the YZR500. Thisbold move would mark the start of a big

change in 500cc WGP racingfrom a largely 4-stroke compe-tition to one dominated com-pletely by 2-stroke machines.Over the ensuing three decadessome 20 riders would pilot the

YZR500 to victory in a total of 115 WGPraces while claiming 11 rider championshiptitles and nine manufacturers titles. Andmany of the technologies born of this ongo-ing challenge would eventually be fed backto Yamaha’s production motorcycles andother products.

In the exhibition visitors can see a rich arrayof YZR500 machines ranging from the veryfirst model right up to the final 2002 model.Among these, one model that particularlystands out is the machine that EddieLawson rode to the World title in 1986,code named the OW81. The reason is thatthe V-4 twin crank engine on this modelwould be the first to adopt a system wherethe two cranks revolved in opposite direc-tions. This revolutionary design would latermature into the standard format for allYZR500 machines that would follow. Thiswas just one example of a three-decadechallenge during which Yamaha engineersthrew out conventional ideas time andagain to come up with revolutionary newtechnologies that redefined state-of-the-art.

Yamaha’s IM Company is anindustry leader in the field of mid-size surface mounters and visitors tothe Yamaha booth at this year’s expo grew by 25% despite an overall15% drop in expo attendance on the whole. Europe’s best set sights on WorldTechnician GP

F or the third time, Yamaha Motor Europe N. V. (YMENV) orga-nized the Euro Technician GP, the European regional champi-onship contest in Yamaha’s worldwide technician GP program.

The contest was held from April 14 to 16 at the YMENV service work-shop and was supported by Snap-on, the tool manufacturer, and it wasattended by the winners of national Technician GP contests held ineight countries, all vying for the title of the best motorcycle technicianin Europe. The competition was close in the practical troubleshooting part of thecontest using YZF-R6s and TDM900s, so it was the written test, withits focus on things like basic electronics and Customer Satisfactionitems, that decided the winners. Mr. Tony Vromant of D’leteren Sportof Belgium took first prize, with Mr. Tom Lischitzki of Yamaha MotorDeutschland GmbH and Mr. Jean Claude Durand of Yamaha MotorFrance S. A. placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. At a party after the con-test, the three were presented their awards by YMENV’s President Inu-maru, along with an official invitation to the 2nd World TechnicianGrand Prix to be held at Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. (YMC) in Japan – atrip that will also include a VIP invitation to the Motegi round of theMotoGP, tours of the Yamaha factories and a good taste of Japaneseculture. In recent years there has been a growing interest inmotor sports among people in India, especially inthe country’s southern region. The attention of

young fans is focusing especially on motocross com-petition. On April 18, YMI showed that it is behindthe sport all the way by holding a press launch eventto introduce the riders and machines (YZ250F) of“Team Yamaha India” that the company will be giv-ing its full support to. In his address to the gathering of about 30 journalists, YMI’s Director Sakurai said that,“We want to share with everyone the kind of excitement and dreams that only motorsports can provide. From February 14 to 17, OMDO organized a full-scale press event to introduce the 2004 Yamaha sledsat a Bolen Resort ski area outside of Moscow. Divid-ed into a Press Day, a Distributor Day and a DealerDay, the event gave press and industry representa-tives a chance to really get to know the Yamaha sledsand their performance through a full agenda of prod-uct explanations and test rides. Motociclismo Spain.During this “test of all tests” sixteen bikes in four categories battledfor the title “Masterbike of the year 2003.” Winning this title, it allcomes down to lap times: which is the fastest bike on the track?The magazines did not send their regular journalists but insteadasked recently retired or still active racers to attend the Masterbikeon their behalf. And that’s how men like four-time Spanish Super-Sport champion Orilo Fernandez, three time German SuperbikeChampion Christer Lindholm, Dutch Super-Sport ChampionBarry Veneman and the Japanese rider Kei Nashimoto, manytimes in the top 10 at the Suzuka 8 Hours, rode the test bikes onthe Jerez circuit.In the 600cc Super-Sport class, the Yamaha YZF-R6 claimed firstplace. The wreck of the petroleum tanker Prestige last December turned outto be one of the worst manmade ecological disasters in history, asthousands of tons of oil spilled into the sea off the coast of Galicia in

northwest Spain. No sooner had news of the spillreached towns along the coast than volunteersbegan gathering to fight the black tide of crudeoil approaching the shore. One of the leaders inwhat would turn out to be an amazing turnout ofvolunteer fighters was Mr. Enrique Lago, theowner of the local Yamaha marine dealershipNáutica de Galicia S.A. (NAGASA) in Ponteve-dra. The job of scooping the terrible lumps ofcrude out of the water was tough for the fleet ofsmall fishing craft that had mobilized for the task,putting special strain on their outboard motors.Mr. Lago immediately put his whole staff towork servicing the boats whenever needed all upand down the coast. Later, Mr. Lago’s promptand valiant efforts were highly praised by President Jorge Lasheras ofYamaha Motor España S.A. Yamaha Fights the Black TideYamaha provides supportfor a flood relief

I n southern Sri Lanka,extended rains have causedthe worst flooding in 50years, which has been aresponsible for a reported 300deaths and destroyed morethan 200,000 residences. Inorder to assist with rescueefforts in this natural disaster,YMC has donated 10 EK15Noutboard motors (15 horse-power kerosene engines) tothe Sri Lankan government. Yamaha made the donation through the local importer as quickly aspossible in order to get the engines in operation quickly and save asmany lives as possible. The donation ceremony was held on May 21 at the presidential res-idence and attending from Associated Motorways Ltd. Group, thelocal Yamaha importer, were chairman, Mr. Ajita de Zoysa, vice-chairman, Mr. Tilak de Zoysa and director, marketing, DeshabanduPatrick Peiris. Also in attendance were executives from AssociatedMotor (Lanka) Company Ltd. This simple ceremony was veryeffective in further strengthening relations with the governmentand creating even more trust for Yamaha in the local area.These engines will be utilized in the areas hit hardest by thefloods and will play a vital role in alleviating some of the damagecaused by this tragedy of historic proportions. After afamiliarisation session at the Auckland MarineRescue Centre, the craft was trialed in the morestrenuous conditions of Bethells Beach on thewest coast.Among the evaluation criteria were ease of get-ting to and from the water, low speed maneu-verability and stability, turning at high and lowspeeds, responsiveness, handling in waves andon the face of waves, cavitation, white waterhandling, the kill switch cord, functional layoutof controls and overall impression.

The 2003 MotoGP seriesthat began on April 6 withthe Japan GP has nowentered the European roundsas of May 11, with the thirdround held at Spain’s Jerezcircuit. This marks the startof what has long been calledthe “Continental Circus” inwhich the GP riders andteams travel from one city toanother across the Europeancontinent in their mobilehomes and trailer trucks like circus per-formers have long done. From round three, two leading YamahaYZR-M1 riders, Alex Barros of theGauloises Yamaha Team and MarcoMelandri of Fortuna Yamaha Team haverecovered from early season injuries andwere back in form. This meant that all fiveYamaha M1 riders from three teams wereparticipating in top condition. And theirresults improved gradually, with Barrosbattling Honda’s Japanese riders TohruUkawa and Makoto Tamada to finish 5thhere in round three and d’Antin Yamahateam’s Shinya Nakano finishing 8th.

Round four of the series was the FrenchGP at Le Mans. Here, Barros continued his

hot streak by mounting thewinners podium for the firsttime this season with a 3rdplace finish while movingup to 4th in the series rank-ing. He was followed in 4thplace at Le Mans by histeammate Olivier Jacque,offering solid proof not onlyof the competitive spirit ofthe Gauloises YamahaTeam but also that the M1 isbecoming a more competi-

tive machine as the season progresses.Entering June, the Italian GP (round 5) andthe Catalonia GP (round 6) were held onsuccessive weekends on the 8th and 15threspectively, and it was Nakano who washot among the Yamaha riders for these tworaces. In the Italian GP at Mugello he qual-ified for a front-row position on the startinggrip and ran as high as 2nd position as hebattled the three Italian stars, V. Rossi, L.Capriossi and M. Biaggi on their own turf.Returning to Spain for the Catalonia GPNakano was again in contention for a podi-um spot right down to the final lap beforefinishing 5th as he did in Italy, his highestfinishes this season. Everts cameback to win again in round five, the Bul-garian GP, and moved into 3rd position inthe season ranking, just 11 series pointsbehind the leader, Pichon.
