Brilliant Audio: Titanium
For the HD Audio EraYamaha’s main goal for the DSP-Z11 was toachieve the highest possible sound qualitythrough loseless reproduction via HDMI signaltransmission. We began with no preconceivednotions, designing everything purely for thepurpose of creating a new receiver standard forthe HD audio era. We focused especially on thefact that not only analogue and digital signaltransmission by coaxial or optical routes, but alsotransmission by the HDMI route will be a priorityin the future.
Achieving our goal for the DSP-Z11 involveda huge number of design considerations, but fiveof the most important ones are as follows. Weused the Pure Ground DAC concept to realisethe best possible sound reproduction from HDMItransmitted signals. We employed two-stage jitterreduction, consisting of a low-jitter PLL circuitand VCXO processing that includes HDMI signalinput for stable clock operation. An 11-channelcurrent feedback circuit contributed to open andappealing sound quality. We opened a new eraof sound field creation through the use of 7.2-channel plus 4-channel presence speaker settingand CINEMA DSP HD3. And we developed aNew Pure Direct that controls the power supplyand route according to the multi-channel and HDaudio reproduction.
The result is a truly impressive referencereceiver for realising all the possibilities of the HDaudio era.
Unprecedented Audio Performance
11.2-Channel High Density Surround Sound(7-Channel 240W/ch + 4-Channel 90W/ch, Max)The DSP-Z11 delivers 240W x 7 channels plus90W to the four presence and rear presencechannels. It also allows the simultaneous use oftwo subwoofers (hence 11.2 channels). Inaddition to Yamaha’s latest CINEMA DSP HD3
technology for high density, incredibly detailedsurround sound, it provides extensive zonecustomisation functions, enabling the 11 ampchannels to be allocated to zones 2, 3 and 4 invarious configurations.
Digital ToP-ART and High CurrentAmplificationYamaha’sDigital ToP-ART designconceptensures thatthe receiver isfully capableof handlingthetransmissionof highvolume digitalsound data atspeeds up to192kHz. Theinterior layoutthoroughlyisolates thedigital, analogue andvideo sectionsand provides
the shortest possible signalroutes. To achieve the qualitydemanded by the latest losslesscompression formats receivedvia HDMI bitstream transmission, circuit boarddesigns were radically revised and partsselection was reevaluated. The DSP-Z11’ssuperior parts include Burr-Brown DSD1796DACs, an op amp, custom-made 27,000µFblock capacitors and Schottky barrier diodes. AVariable Volume Control helps provide the bestpossible S/N ratio. High Current Amplificationcircuitry achieves high current power with lowimpedance for superior amplifier performance.
Super Stable Chassis DesignThe internal chassis design uses an ultra-rigidRahmen structure, which is a series of H-shapedframes. This rectangular structure secures andisolates the parts sections, while reducingvibration to a negligible amount. The externalchassis walls are thick (1.6mm) and heavy.
High Sound Quality: Preamplifier Stage
New Pure Direct ConceptFor the DSP-Z11, Yamaha has upgraded itspopular Pure Direct feature. It now provideshigher sound quality from lossless audio formatsdigitally transmitted via HDMI, while stillensuring optimum quality from CD and analogueaudio sources. It allows the enjoyment of two-channel CD output, multi-channel Super AudioCD and DVD-Audio output, and even Blu-ray,HD-DVD and other HD sources.
Pure Ground DAC ConceptThe DACs, vital determinants of digital audioquality, are placed on the analogue circuitboard, preventing the large ground potentialdifferences that canoccur when the digitaland analogue sectionsare far apart.Furthermore, the DACsare connected directlyto the power supply toavoid degradation oflow level signals. Thishelps to maximise both two-channel and multi-channel audio performance.
High Quality Preamplifier Block DesignThe printed circuit boards are located very closeto each other. This hasthe advantages ofminimising signalpaths, shorteningsignal loops andimproving noiseisolation from othercircuits.
Low-Jitter PLL and Digital Clock CircuitsThe preamplifier stage incorporates both a low-jitter PLL circuit and a VCXO digital clock circuit, significantly reducing jitter from digital inputs sosound processing can be accomplished withoutbeing affected by jitter. This is particularlyeffective in improving the sound quality of digitalsignals that are input via HDMI.
High Sound Quality: Power Amplifier Stage
All Channel Current Feedback CircuitThe power amplifier uses current rather thanvoltage for feedback in all channels. Becausethere is virtually no phase shift, phasecompensation can be kept to a minimum. Thiscontributes to the DSP-Z11’s excellent transientresponse, allowsfrequencyresponse toremainunchangedeven when thegain changes, and creates awarmer,texture-richsound.
Hybrid Low NoisePower SupplyA highly efficient DC-DC converter andextra-large transformeris used for the digitalcircuit, which requireshigh current input, anda low noise powersupply circuit for theanalog audio circuit. Anindependent currentpower path is providedfor the speaker relaysand display.
Symmetrical Layout and New Power Circuit LayoutThe heavy power transformer is in the centrewith the heat sinks on either side to ensureequal weightdistribution. The powercircuit layout separatesthe video and digitalaudio section from theanalogue audio sectionto eliminate adverseinfluences, anddistances betweencircuits and powersupplies were shortened to avoid high currentloop problems.
Thick Aluminium Panels and Large, Heavy FeetThick aluminium panelsare used throughout toprevent vibration andmaintain highperformance audioreproduction. Thelarge, heavy feet alsoserve to dampenexternal vibrations.

HDMI 1.3a CompatibilityThe DSP-Z11 is compatible withthe newest version of the HDMIstandard, 1.3a, providing the benefits of DeepColor (30/36bit) and the xvYCC colour standard.Digital video and audio signals can be transmittedvia a single HDMI cable and it accepts thelossless audio formatsDolby TrueHD and DTSMaster Audio. Thereare five HDMI inputs, one of which is on thefront panel, as well astwo HDMI outputs thatallow images to bedisplayed on twodevices, such as a flatpanel monitor and aprojector. HDMI 1.3ameans the DSP-Z11can handle the high1080p/24Hz resolutionof Blu-ray Discs, andalso provides an AutoLip-Sync function thatautomatically adjusts the lag between video andaudio and a double speed Refresh Rate of100Hz/120Hz.
xvYCC Colour SpaceWhen you use the DSP-Z11’s HDMI outputs totransmit video signals, you enjoy spectacular colorperformance. One reason is that HDMI 1.3a usesa new colour standardcalled xvYCC, whichsupports 1.8 times asmany colours asprevious HDTV signals. This expanded rangeof colours means thatHDTVs can displayimages with coloursthat are far morenatural and vivid thanever before.
The Best-Balanced Video ProcessingConfiguration After an extensive evaluation of video processingconfigurations, Yamaha found that there is nosingle chip solution that can achieve optimum

system performance for the DSP-Z11 in both theSD and HD domains. Therefore Yamaha decidedto use a dedicated i/p converter and a dedicatedvideo scaler. The i/p converter (480i/576i to480p/576p) features a 10-bit processing MotionAdaptive Deinterlacing Engine with EnhancedMotion Detection Filter, Diagonal Processing and2:2/2:3 Pull-Down Detection. The video scaler isthe Anchor Bay ABT1018, featuring a 10-bitPrecision Video Scaling™ engine that canindependently scale images horizontally andvertically to achieve outstanding picture quality. The result is a very stable picture with no jaggiesand no flicker with HD deinterlacing.
Advanced Features
Network Receiver CapabilitiesLike other Yamaha network receivers, the DSP-Z11 can be connected to a PC or YamahaMCX-2000, and can access Internet Radio via aLAN. It supports the LAN standby mode, allowingan external controller to send commands via anethernet link. Two USB ports are provided, on thefront and rear, with 500mA power support. It iscompatible with PlaysForSure devices, WindowsVista, Yamaha Music CAST and various audioCodecs such as MP3, WMA, WAV and MPEG4AAC.
Advanced YPAO Sound Optimisation Auto SetupYamaha’s YPAO Sound Optimisation systemanalyses the room acoustics and various systemfactors, then makesadjustments to provideoptimum sound quality. It addition to theprevious adjustmentsfor speaker size, distance and wiring, plus equalisation andlevel, this AdvancedYPAO has four newcapabilities. The first is measurement at multiplelocations (up to eight). It does not average theresults but performs analysis weighted inaccordance with the state of each location tocalculate compensation values. This results in alarger “sweet spot” at the listening position. Thesecond is the use of parametric equalisation tocancel the effects of standing waves, whichdegrade low range response. The third isspeaker angle measurements to optimiseCINEMA DSP effects. And the fourth is an EasyStarter feature that activates YPAO when themicrophone is inserted and the Enter button ispressed, with information shown on the display.

CINEMA DSP HD3
The DSP-Z11 introduces Yamaha’s latest digitalsound field processing refinement: CINEMA DSPHD3. As amazing as the systems on the DSP-Z9and RX-V3800 were, this system marks a furtherevolution of CINEMA DSP. It utilises four QuadCINEMA DSP engines and permits losslessdecoding of 192kHz signals, while providing 3Dprocessing that gives the sound field an extravertical dimension. In its full 11-channelconfiguration setting it adds two presence andtwo rear presence speakers, offering theenjoyment of a completely new sound stage.
Adaptive DRCAdaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control) is a newvolume control technology that is effective forlow-volume listening, such as at night or withheadphones. It applies DRC processing toeliminate the volume differences between loud
commercials and ordinary programming and totake into account our ears’ loss of sensitivity asvolume decreases. The compensation isperformed automatically, so all dialogue is heardclearly even at low levels, and there are nosudden loud bursts of sound.
THX Ultra2 Plus Surround ModeTHX Ultra2 Plus includes the newestTHX Loudness Plus technology. It letsyou enjoy five THX programmes in theoptimum condition, delivering a more accuratelistening experience at any volume level.
Improved Compressed Music EnhancerThis popular feature restores the sound of theoriginal music from digitally compressed formatssuch as MP3. The DSP-Z11offers an improved version thatprocesses multi-channel signalswith a DSP algorithm, so all channels (ratherthan just two) are enhanced, for more accuratereproduction and a more expansive sound.
Main Remote UnitThe remote unit hasshock-sensorilluminated keys foreasy operation in dimlighting — just pick itup and the keys lightup. It features animproved key layoutand an LCD window:the layout setupbuttons (zone selector, macro mode, remoteID, remote setup and input select) are groupedaround the LCD window. It also provides easyaccess to the System Memory.
On-Screen Display with GUIAn on-screen GUI (Graphical User Interface)display makes operating the amplifier easy andintuitive. It is compatible withiPod, internet radio, PC andUSB displays. Six displaylanguages can be selected:English, Spanish, French,German, Russian andJapanese.
Versatile Zone Control
Super-Versatile Zone ControlThe DSP-Z11 has extensive zone controlcapabilities, which are too numerous to explainhere. The most important point is that the 11.2channels can be assigned in a wide variety ofconfigurations to Main/Zone 2/Zone 3/Zone 4 Thepresence, rear presence and EXTD (by surroundback amp) speaker terminals can be assigned toeach zone. It provides Intelligent Power AmplifierAssignability (surround back amp assignment)and Independent Zone Amplifier Assignment with7.2-channel main zone playback.
Also important is that Zone 2 can acceptbitstream signals and also offers componentvideo output and upconversion of composite andS-Video signals.
Some other convenient zone functionsinclude: a Party Mode that permits audio BGMand video BGV play of the same input source inthe main room and other three zones with one-button operation, a Zone OSD function that letsyou browse information about the songs orPC/vTuner contents that are playing, Zone Monothat provides compatibility with one-speaker or
