You too can be beautiful.

Why would anyone want to hunt foxes with dogs?

Isn’t the solution obvious?

Hunting is evil, cruel and outdated.

Week 2

When preparing a speech, you should choose a topic that you know a lot about.

School issues are relevant and you could be said to be experts on such topics as you

are affected by them every day.

Choose one of the following topics to discuss with a partner. Choose one heading and

try to write down your thoughts about it in the box below.

Uniform – for or against?

Is school uniform a good thing or a bad thing? Should it be changed? How?

Holidays

Are school holidays too long or too short? Should there be more or fewer school

holidays?

Homework

Is homework an important part of school life or should it be banned? Why?

Now fill in the following table with five bullet points for and five against the topic

you have chosen:

Week 3

Decide whether you are for or against the issue you have chosen and write a speech

to be given in a lower school assembly.

Remember you are speaking to people your own age and try to keep them interested

by using questions and humour.

Don’t use speech marks.

Some ideas:

Hello year 8. I am here today to talk about homework …

How many times have you woken up and thought ‘Oh no, I really don’t want

the holidays to end’?

Everybody knows that school uniform is a sensible option as it allows

everyone to be equal.

I suggest that homework should be changed in the following ways…

Write your speech here.

Writing to Explain

Your aunt has two children, a boy and a girl, who are about to become

teenagers. She has asked you to explain to her, based on your own

experience of being a teenager, what she should look out for as her

children grow up, what you think are the main challenges of being and

bringing up a teenager and what she should do about the likely

situations that might arise. Write a letter to her explaining these things

and what you think she should do about typical situations that might

arise. Remember to:

The school has decided to ban all TV’s within the school …..

Opening statement….What you think about his decision…

Argument 1: Why you need them …overall. How valuable they are to your learning /

progress; Eng, Sci, Geo etc

Argument 2: What you think will happen to your education if you don’t have TV’s in

the school? Think about all pupils within the school …. Who will suffer most?

Argument 3: Teaching of the past / future.

Try and suggest an alternative solution or compromise.
