ENGLISH II, FALL 2012

pity poor flesh and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this

fine specimen of hypermagical ultraomnipotence.

~e.e. cummings

For this project, you are going to select a topic (person, place, invention, event, scientific discovery, etc) that you

believe demonstrates evidence of mankind displaying, using, or even abusing our ‘hypermagical

ultraomnipotence.’

Directions: In complete sentences, complete the following tasks.

1. Write the topic you would like to learn about for this project:

2. Summarize what you already know about this topic.

3. Explain how this subject/topic relates to the concept of ‘hypermagical ultraomnipotence.’

4. List related topics or subtopics that might be siginificant.

5. Write 3-5 BIG questions you have about your subject (these questions can’t be answered with only one or two

words; in fact, they may not have clear or conclusive answers).

HYPERMAGICAL ULTRAOMNIPOTENCE RESEARCH TOPICS

This is a list of topics submitted by students, as well as a list of suggestions for students who did not select their own topic or wish to change topics.

NARROWING YOUR TOPIC

As you begin conducting your research and learning about your topic, you might decide to narrow your topic. This is much more likely than broadening it. If you’re unsure, review these questions:

Am I having trouble figuring out what to take notes on?

Am I taking notes/recording information that connects this topic to our theme (hypermagical ultraomnipotence)?

Am I more interested in one subtopic than others?

Can I focus my notes on this element/part/facet of the topic and still find plenty of information?

Research Paper Thesis Worksheet

English II

Step 1: When writing a research paper on a place, person, or event, consider the significance of your topic before anything else. Why is your topic significant?

Step 2: Now, what are some statements you could make about your topic? If I asked what you had learned, what might you say off the top of your head? For example, if I were writing a paper on Obama as president, some statements I could make are:

Obama’s presidency has been criticized by many.

Obama has tried to change lots of things, like healthcare.

Obama struggles with many issues that were problems before he took office.

Obama has not executed all of his plans since he’s been elected.

At this point, you need to consider your topic and write down the main points. You might need to refer to your notes, but please do NOT put specific details (like numbers, statistics, dates, or places).

Step 3: Look your reasons (above) and the Thesis Sentence handout; now, write a thesis for your paper that incorporates all of these ideas:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________

Step 4: Underline the SUBJECT (most likely, your topic) and the thesis VERB in the thesis above.

Step 5: NOW – I will help you refine your thesis for your paper…so, find me and ask.

Revised, final thesis:

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________

Step 6: COMPLETE the ROUGH DRAFT OUTLINE graphic organizer.

After you have finished this, you are ready to write your paper.

When you draft your paper, you must write in complete thoughts and include TRANSITIONS throughout the paper.

EACH PARAGRAPH SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE IN-TEXT CITATION! If not, that paragraph is .

When to cite within your paragraph: at the end of information from one source when you switch sources when you have a direct quote (always cite directly after the quote)

In-text Citation Examples: (Jones 27) notes in that sentence/paragraph came from one page (Jones 27-29) notes in this sentence/paragraph came from multiple pages

Research Paper Drafting Notes

Introduction An introduction is an important part of your paper in two ways: 1. It catches the attention of your reader, and 2. It tells the reader exactly what your paper is going to be about. • Remember, in a formal research paper you never refer to yourself in the first person. Do not use phrases like, "In this paper I will." **Provide background information on your topic/transition from your hook to your thesis.** • Your thesis statement should be the last sentence in your introduction. It should answer a question, or present the reader with an idea or theory about the person or place researched. The writer then attempts to answer the question or prove the theory in the body of the paper. THE INTRODUCTION FOCUSES YOUR PAPER – IT GIVES YOU A GUIDE AS TO WHAT INFORMATION YOUR SHOULD INCLUDE IN YOUR PAPER. Body In your paper, you must use your notes/information to

support your thesis statement – you are supposed to come up with a question or position regarding your subject.

The research of others only goes to support or answer your question or position. Therefore, you should explain

or analyze every quote or piece of information to show how it helps to support or prove your argument. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence and supporting facts/examples for that sentence.

Also, make sure you cite your sources each time you use information from one. This is not only for direct

quotes. Each paragraph should have at least one citation - Ex: (Jones 432). Conclusion • In a conclusion, you sum up what your paper was about. • Start with your THESIS STATEMENT. Why? Because you want to remind the reader what you set out to prove in your paper. If you have written a good paper, that will be obvious. If not, the reader may have been lost in all of the information you provided and needs a reminder of what you were trying to do. • In the conclusion, the writer also tries to emphasize the brilliance of, or the significance of, or the horror of, or the role of your subject. If your paper gave information on a person, your conclusion should emphasize just how important that person was to whatever he or she was involved in. • Often if there is a humanitarian comment or moral message on the subject, it is made in the conclusion.

A hook is necessary as it presents the reader with a vivid glimpse of what is to follow. Here are some examples:

Taking a stand on a controversial issue: Some scholars suggest that the holocaust never happened.

Presenting (retelling) a short anecdote: My grandfather served during World War II and was present at D-Day.

Beginning with a quotation: “I watched my husband get into the line with the other men. It was the last time I saw him.”

Asking a question: How many Jews actually died in Auschwitz?

Address the reader directly: Imagine yourself on a train, so overcrowded that you were practically suffocating.

Providing a vivid description: The ash from the crematorium fell from the sky like a gentle snowfall.

Beginning with a startling or interesting fact:

It happened relatively quickly. When Hitler took Germany into World War II in 1939, approximately 6,500,000 Jews lived there and in the surrounding countries of Europe. By the end of the war in 1945, their numbers were reduced to 500,000. Six million people, murderedin a span of 6 years.
