State of the Nation Address 2015

he State of the Nation Address or SONA 2015 Tdelivered by the state

president, Jacob Zuma, at the joint sitting at Parliament on Thursday will be arguably the most remembered since 1994 for many

reasons.However the acknowledgment of

the Freedom Charter, adopted in 1955, and its 60th anniversary this year is a watershed moment this year.

The president also mentioned that

2015 had more significance in that Nelson Mandela was released from prison a quarter of a century ago.

“We continue to be inspired by Madiba and draw lessons from his legacy as we build our country,” he said.

Folks the before, during and after of SONA was riddled with controversy, drama, bust ups, walk outs and more.

Journalists were unable to use their cell phones due to “signal jamming.” The alleged deployment of the SAPS Public Order Police (POP) Unit by government in roughing up Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) parliamentarians. The walk out by the United

Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) and #SONA2015 as i t appeared on social networking platform Twitter trending in all of Mzansi.

While the president delivered his speech, he was interrupted by (EFF) wanting answers r e g a r d i n g t h e presidents Nkandla residence upgrade. W h e n t h e H o u s e Speaker, Baleka Mbete told the EFF to desist from asking questions and they refused, she ordered them to be removed.

This sparked a brawl in which the SAPS POP Unit, dressed in formal c lo th ing , fo r c ib ly r e m o v e d E F F par l iamentar ians - w h i c h t h e s t a t e b r o a d c a s t e r s i d e s t e p p e d i n t e l e v i s i n g l i v e . However cell phone video footage showed the free for all shoving, kicks and punches that were coming from all directions.

In the melee a female EFF MP, Renelewe M a s h a b e l a w a s

checked by paramedics for facial injuries and the EFF leader, Julius Malema himself showed the battle scars as his shirt was torn. The EFF leader told journalists; who had a field day after they got their signal back, that seven of his members were beaten and that “Mahsabela was cornered by many POP officers.”

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa was one of the first to leave after the melee and said that he cannot be a part of a “police state.” The DA also walked out thereafter saying that it was wrong for Mbete to ask “armed policeman” to enter parliament.

After the melee the President came back to the podium and continued with his SONA.

Employment and youth investment

According to Statistics South Africa or (StatsSA) employment figures for the last quarter of 2014 showed that jobs grew by 203 000 and the report further showed that 15, 3 million people are currently employed in South Africa.

Two billion rand has been claimed to date by some twenty nine thousand employers, who have claimed for at least two hundred and seventy thousand young people.

The voice of reasonLast Thursday, a group of friends

gathered to celebrate a birthday in the Thembeni area. At about 7pm a 20-year-old who felt the effects of alcohol decided to leave. She was about to leave when the owner of the house and host of the party pulled her into a room and tried to rape her. Fortunately for her, she was rescued by another partygoer and fled. Two hours later the revelers whose alcohol levels had obviously escalated did not notice the host. Another 23-year-old who was left alone in the house with him was taken to a room and allegedly raped. Her boyfriend who had gone to relieve himself returned and found her being raped by the host. The boyfriend removed him and assaulted him. A 28-year-old Thembeni man appeared at court on Monday and was remanded in custody on charges of attempted rape and rape. He will seek bail this week.

to get the better of him. It is alleged that Khehla Hadebe (45) picked polony, cheese and bread and walked out of Boxer Cash and Carry at about 2:30pm. He was spotted by a

security guard who arrested him. Hadebe pleaded guilty and one could clearly understand his actions but it was pointed out to him that this does not justify what he did. He was given a stern warning for his crime and warned that there will be no second chance for him.

Small worldSuchin Deepraj of Darnall abattoir was

surprised by his employee's actions. He alleges that on Saturday afternoon he was approached by Alpha Security who had a man in their custody. They alleged that the man was selling meat in the Zamani area. Deepraj immediately recognized the man as one of his workers. On questioning him he readily conceded that he and the security guard were working hand-in-hand. On checking through the guard's property they found a large quantity of meat wrapped in a jacket. After some hesitation the guard finally admitted to his role in this scheme. Sizwe Mangebe (24) and security guard, Stanley Magubane (44) both pleaded guilty as both have lost

their jobs. The magistrate deemed that as a severe enough sentence as their prospects of being employed are very slim and let both off with a warning.

Borrow and returnA local businessman will not be lending

in a hurry after his recent ordeal. The owner alleges that a man came to borrow a ladder to conduct repairs across the road. He waited patiently for the man who did not show up. A few days later a business colleague contacted him and handed the man to him. He allegedly sold the ladder valued at several hundred rands for a mere R70 for whoonga. Nishen Govender (35) is due back at court on 25 February.

Buy legitimatelyIf something is too good to be true it

probably is. Siyabonga Patrick Nhleko (35) of Shakaville was arrested and charged for receiving stolen property. His arrest follows an investigation into the breaking in of a branch office of a political party in the Shakaville area. Police, acting on a tip-off recovered a Hisense fridge in Nhleko's house which he alleged was sold to him by a neighbour. Whilst police investigations continue, Nhleko remains in custody and will seek bail this week. Members of the community are again urged not to purchase “bargains” from unknown sources.

Eskom to receive 23 billion randBy Xpress Reporter

The current status of water supply according to the Ilembe District Municipality is that its citizenry is in drought season. Electricity supply has also been affected with the load shedding taking place across the board.

During the State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2015, the state president of South Africa Jacob Zuma focused most of his speech on the energy constraints and how Eskom would be given help.

The president explained that the country experiencing energy constraints is an impediment to economic growth and is an inconvenience to everyone.

“Overcoming the challenge is uppermost in our programme. We are doing everything we can to resolve the energy challenge,” he said.

The plan to bolster Eskom is the first resolution in the “Nine point Plan” which states “Resolving the energy challenge.”

The short and medium term plan involves enhancing the

electricity generation capacity and managing the electricity demand by way of stabilising the national power utility through a financial boost.

“Government will honour its commitment to give Eskom around 23 billion rand in the next fiscal year. The “War Room” established by Cabinet in December is working diligently around the clock with Eskom, to stabilize the electricity supply system and contain the load shedding,” said Zuma.

He also urged all citizens and government departments to save electricity thus reducing the need for load shedding. There are still 3.4 million households in the country without electricity.

What locals need to know is that:

• The construction of the three new power stations Kusile, Medupi and Ingula, will add ten thousand megawatts of capacity to the national grid;

• Eskom has been directed to switch from diesel to gas as a

source of energy for the utility's generators;

• 4000 megawatts from Independent Power Producers, using renewable sources has been produced;

• 3900 megawatts of renewable energy has also been sourced, with 32 projects with a capacity of just over 1500 megawatts completed and connected to the grid.

• Eskom itself has completed the construction of the Sere Wind Farm, which is already delivering 100 megawatts to the grid, well ahead of its intended launch in March this year; and

• A total of 2 600 megawatts of hydro-electric capacity will be sourced from the SADC region.

“ F o r s u s t a i n a b i l i t y , Government will establish strategic partnerships for skills development with the countries that will partner us in the Energy Build Programme, while also generating skills locally,” concluded the president on Eskom in his SONA.

Stanger Heights Primary celebrates Valentine’s Day

The Dolphin Coast Hospice Association (DCHA) held their much anticipated Valentine's Ball at the Stanger Siva Sungum Hall on Saturday, 14 February 2015. Patrons enjoyed delicious food, gifts and good music.

“We take this opportunity to thank all who supported us in every way to make the evening a memorable occasion,” said DCHA PRO, Sarah Bee Khan. She added that the board would love to have feedback from the public by rating the event. Email: dolphincoasthospice@ gmail.com.

NOTICE - Motorists

A notice to all motorists entering and leaving KwaDukuza, at entrance of the town, that commencement of the R74 upgrade has begun in earnest. Please exercise patience and be cautious as traffic will come to a standstill from time to time during the construction process

HB Khuzwayo, implored the Class of 2015 to be disciplined, work hard and stay away from friends that were toxic to their academic progress.

The School Governing Body ( S G B ) C h a i r p e r s o n : M s Mbonambi highlighted the overall schools performance in 2014 and also had a strong m e s s a g e f o r l e a r n e r s i n attendance.

The Guest of Honour and school alumnus from the “Class of 1998” Bradley Ponen, in a motivation-c u m - h i g h s c h o o l autobiographical message, blew away learners with his charisma, his attitude to life, confidence and message. Ponen, who works in the South African Air Force (SAAF), got learners cheering with every sentence (his uniform also impressed the learners).

The star of the day was

undoubtedly Class of 2014 matriculant Kwazi Gumede who received many awards which included; distinctions in Maths, Engineering and Graphics Design (EGD), isiZulu and Special awards or four floating trophies.

He received the Fabweld award for EGD, the Dr Jeevren Reddy Floating Trophy for Maths and Science, the late Dr SM Pather Humanitarian award and the C David Family Dux award.

“Why can't I have an elephant for a pet?" I asked Mum and Dad. We'd gone to the zoo. We were looking at the elephants. "Elephants are too big to keep," said Dad. "But Nathan at school has a horse and he's big," I said. "That's different," said Mum. "You can ride a horse.”

"You can also ride on an elephant," I persisted. "There is no space at home for one," moaned Mum. "Why don't you get a nice cat instead?" said Dad. "Everyone has a cat. I want something different," I said.

"We can go to the pet shop and you can pick out something you like," said Dad. "Until then I don't want to hear another word about elephants." Dad took me by the hand to look at the rest of the animals. But I couldn't stop thinking about one of the elephants. Her name was Tricia. I thought Tricia must be bored living in the same place most of her life. I had an idea. When Mum and Dad went to the cafe to have lunch, I said, "I'm going to look at the birds. I won't be long." "Birds and fun and playful," said Mum. "Perhaps you'll see one you'll like as a pet.”

"Maybe," I said. I quickly went to look at the birds. "I can't play with a bird," I said to myself. I ran back to the elephant enclosure. I went over to where Tricia was standing.

"I bet you're bored stuck inside here. Maybe you'd like to come home with me?" I said to Tricia. Tricia grunted and swayed her truck from side to side as if she understood.

"I've always wanted an elephant. I'll be back to get you," I said and waved goodbye.

Just before we left the zoo, I scooted back to the elephant enclosure. Tricia was waiting for me. "Nobody is around, let's go now," I said to Tricia and opened up the gate latch and snuck her out of the zoo. I looked around to make sure nobody was looking. Then I opened the back of the station wagon. Tricia hopped inside. I covered her with a blanket. "It won't be long. Stay under the blanket so Mum and Dad don't see you," I warned.

On the way home Dad said, "The car seems heavy today." "Maybe it needs a tune up," said Mum. "It does seem sluggish." I patted the top of the blanket. I didn't want Tricia making one of her rumbling sounds. Once home, I waited until Mum and Dad were safely inside the home. I took Tricia up the stairs. I made a, 'No Entry - Off Limits to Parents' sign. I hung it on the door. "I suppose you're hungry after such a long trip? Let's go to the kitchen and find some food," I said to Tricia. She bellowed at the sound

An Elephant Living In the Houseby Sharyn

of the word food."Shhhh. Mum and Dad mustn't know

you're here," I said. I checked that the coast was clear before we went downstairs. I found two large bags of peanuts inside the kitchen cupboard. Tricia finished the peanuts and squeaked to let me know she was still hungry. "I didn't know elephants ate so much," I said and opened the fridge. I grabbed all the fruit I could find. I also took the two boxes of corn inside the freezer. After Tricia had finished eating, I took her back upstairs to the bedroom. "I'll be back after I've had dinner.”

At the dinner table, Mum said, "I can't find the bags of peanuts or the fruit which was in the fridge. I'm sure I put two boxes of corn in the freezer. They've disappeared too. Did you eat them Olivia?" "No Mum," I said truthfully. "Well, someone with a huge appetite must have been here. If I didn't know better I'd say we have an elephant living in the house," said Mum.

I stood up and left my half eaten bowl of ice cream, "I'll be back later to help with the dishes," I said and bolted up the stairs. When I entered my room, Tricia wasn't there. Panicking I checked the rooms upstairs. I found Tricia inside the bathroom. "Oh no!" I gasped in horror. Tricia had somehow turned on the bath taps. The bath was overflowing. Tricia was shooting a stream of water from her trunk onto her back.

"What a mess! What will Mum say?" I groaned. I quickly turned off the taps. I took six of mum's best towels and wiped Tricia dry before taking her back to the bedroom. Later on, I went to wash the dishes. Mum came to see me. "Did you have a bath and make that mess in the bathroom, Olivia?”

"No Mum," I answered truthfully. "Well, someone has slopped a lot of water around. If I didn't know better I'd say we have an elephant living in the house," she said. I quickly finished washing the dishes and sprinted up the stairs. "You must stay inside the room. If my parents find you, they'll make me take you back to the zoo," I said to Tricia. "Maybe you're bored. We can go outside and play soon." That night I waited until Mum and Dad had gone to bed, then I took Tricia outside to play. While I was looking for a ball Tricia must have felt hungry again. She'd used her head to knock down the trees to eat the leaves. She'd also used her tusks to rip off the bark and to dig up the roots.

"Let's play ball," I said to Tricia. She used her long trunk to pick the ball off the ground and throw it to me. She also used her trunk to move objects that were in her way. After we'd finished playing, I climbed on

Tricia's back. "I've always wanted to ride an elephant." Together we circled round and round the backyard. "That's enough for one night," I said when I felt sleepy. I took Tricia back upstairs to my room.

Next morning at the breakfast table, Dad said, "A mini tornado must have gone through our backyard last night. Did you hear anything Olivia?" "No Dad," I answered truthfully.

"I can't understand why it was only our backyard that was damaged," said Dad.

"Well, only something very strong could knock down trees. If I didn't know better I'd say we have an elephant living in the house," said Mum. I quickly went upstairs, dressed and got ready for school.

"You must stay inside the room, and keep quiet until I come home," I warned Tricia before I left. However I don't think it was good idea leaving an elephant inside a small room. Tricia must have gone exploring again. "All our beautiful furniture's been ruined," said Mum when she came home that afternoon. Elephant's don't have very good eyesight. Neither can they turn their head to see behind them. So they have to turn their whole body around to see.

"Have you been playing ball inside the house, Olivia?" asked Dad. He plonked down on the damaged sofa and scratched his head.

"No Dad," I answered truthfully. "Only a large beast could make this much mess. If I didn't know better I'd say we've got a herd of elephants living in the house," said Mum and cried.

Suddenly I didn't feel good about keeping an elephant as a pet. I ran up the stairs. "You can't stay here anymore. Mum is beginning to suspect that you're living here. It's time to go home," I told Tricia. Tricia roared at the word home.

"I need to go back to the zoo," I told Mum and Dad, then explained, "I need to study an animal for my school project." That afternoon, Tricia went back to the zoo.

That night, when the house was dark and quiet, I carried something else upstairs. Its long black hairy arms poked out from under the blanket. "Elephants are too naughty and also too big to hide," I whispered to my new playmate.

“Direct violation and abuse of power”

What a shamefully embarrassing State of the Nation address! One will have to question if indeed the chaos we witnessed on Thursday night by those elected to govern is in fact a true picture of the state of our nation. What is most disturbing however is not the unruly and unparliamentarily behaviour of certain members of Parliament though absolutely unacceptable, but rather what is disturbing is the lack of control and governance and the abuse of authority demonstrated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Baleka Mbete.

No doubt the role of the Speaker is a challenging one but what must be understood and agreed upon is that those elected into positions of office are in no way exempt from abiding by the laws they have been elected to uphold.

Deciding to end and not hear any further points of order from being raised even though Parliament rules allow it during joint sittings is a direct violation and abuse of power. Permitting armed SAPS officers to enter into the Chamber is a blatant and vexatious disregard by Mrs Mbete to correct parliamentary procedures, rules and conventions. She further amplified her inability to maintain control and demonstrate accurate governance by being evasive in providing an answer to the simple question put to her regarding the presence of the SAPS in chambers. This was a clear indication of her avoiding her serious misjudgement and breach of the Constitution.

Her function as the Speaker requires that she act impartially and protects the rights of all parties but it was clear that she is indeed biased and seeks to protect only the President by abusing her power to shut down any form of opposition against the President.

Her action has compromised the integrity of our Parliament and has largely contributed to degenerating it into a circus show. She must be held accountable for rendering ungovernable what is meant to be a reputable and esteemed institution of our democracy. The speaker is governed by rules conventions and precedents and we cannot accept or allow for our leaders to operate above the law!

OPEN TILL LATE..

Thank you Stanger Hospital

A most definite YES based on my first-hand experience, the afternoon of 10 January 2015. I am an early forties male and for the first time in my life experienced unbearable chest pains that had me bent double over and all of this in a space of an hour in the comfort of my lounge. I asked my son to urgently drive me to Stanger Hospital Casualty whilst ringing at the back of my head were the following words “Are you really going to Stanger Hospital? You do know that you are not going back home once this is over right” but the severe pain, quickly, wiped away these thoughts as I entered the gates at Stanger Hospital.

At the entrance to casualty I was met by a porter who immediately understood my circumstance and quickly assisted me out of the car, onto a wheelchair and took me speedily into casualty whilst I was bent over clutching at my chest.

This was when I met the people that literally brought me back from the dead, Dr Jay Matthew and his team. This team of six to seven people gathered around me and had me hooked up to different types of drips whilst Dr Matthew stayed at my side talking me through what was happening to me and what he and his team were going to be doing. He also brought in humour trying to keep me as calm as he possibly could and he was about to end his shift but promised me not to worry and that he will be at my side all the way and beyond his normal shift. It was 15

Letters to the Editor minutes later whilst they were busy working on me that I went into cardiac arrest (flat lined). This team with Dr Matthew's guidance brought me back and five minutes later I flat lined, again. Eventually when I did come around Dr Matthew was still at my side explaining what had happened and updated me on my

current status whilst verifying my responses. He stabilised me and continued telephonic discussions with the senior cardio specialist at Albert Luthuli Hospital who advised on the meds that I further required and requested that I be forwarded to Luthuli hospital at the soonest.

That same evening arrangements were made to have me transported to Luthuli and Kenny and his team (our local paramedics) ensured that I was taken speedily and safely to Luthuli and during the course of the journey ensured that I am comfortable and as stable as can be. I was completely stabilised at Luthuli and am now a well recovering heart bypass patient.

In a nutshell and based on my personal experience, using the governmental system was the first for me and will forever be a part of my memory of excellent service with dedicated, committed people that went beyond the call of duty to ensure that I had a second chance at life.

I am truly indebted , grateful and greatly appreciative of this new lease on life that I have been granted and more so to these great people that assisted me all the way through. My heartfelt commendation (no pun intended) to Dr Matthew and his team for bringing me back from the dead and keeping me alive. I now have a completely new perspective of life. I had the wonderful opportunity after my ordeal to personally thank all the individuals concerned and this was truly a humbling experience for me. Thank you and may your team grow from strength to strength in dedicating themselves selflessly to the health needs of our community. Great Job Stanger Hospital!

Keep saving lives

Warriors stun Randsons in Trophies Engravers Top 8 tournament

There was a rude awaking for the competitive league outfit, Randsons when they lost their opening round robin clash against Warriors Sport in the Trophies Engravers Top 8 volleyball tournament hosted by K w a D u k u z a Vo l l e y b a l l Association at the association courts last Thursday. Going in as one of the favourites to qualify for the semi-final, they were shocked with their first round loss.

Randsons began their first set cautiously but soon found their rhythm and raced to a 25-18 win to clinch the set. Warriors regrouped in the second set and

they returned the favour scampering to victory by the same margin (25-18) to level the scores at 1-1 and force the game into the third and decisive set. Warriors held their own in the final set as they held on for a 15-12 victory.

Randsons now have a hill to climb as they now face the formidable KSST in their final league encounter and only an upset victory will guarantee them a place in the semi-final. KSST collected maximum points (25-0, 25-0) as their opponents, 2014 social league champions, Sunbrook failed to field a side and will now have nothing

In the Pool B clash, Darnall United have set themselves up nicely to clinch a semi-final berth as they came from a set down to beat the unpredictable Cool Leaders 17-25, 25-13, 15-11. In the other match played, 2015 competitive league champions were stunned when social league outfit Teachers Style took a set of them but managed to win 2-1.

The action continues this Thursday at the Association courts as the second round of the round robin matches gets underway.

fire after they came in for some hostile bowling from Dillon Rautenbach and Desigan Pillay. United could only master up a paltry 89/9 in their 19 overs. Z. Ali was the only batsman to offer any resistance scoring a pains taking 29 runs. The pick of the Manor bowlers was Pillay who claimed 4 wickets for a miserly 10 runs from 3

overs. He was well supported by Rautenbach who took 2 wickets in 4 overs for 17 runs.

In reply, Manor raced to 92 for 3 wickets passing the tally in 10.4 overs to claim victory. The top scorers for Manor were Steven Jacobs who scored 36 whilst teenage sensation Aaron Pillay made 24.

South African ODI captain AB de Villiers has praised the character and fight of the Proteas' middle order in getting his team over the line in their opening ICC Cricket World Cup match against Zimbabwe at Seddon Park in Hamilton, New Zealand, on Sunday.

The record unbeaten 256-run fifth wicket partnership between David Miller (138 not out) and JP Duminy (115 not out) laid the foundation for the Proteas' opening victory of the tournament, and was a timely confidence boost for the middle order after a rare top-order failure.

side and watch that," De Villiers said after the match.

"We were talking about 240 to 250 at one stage, and ended up getting 339. I don't know how we did it but it was an incredible performance by the two of them.

"David got a sniff in the 40th over, and went to it from there. We've seen him demolish attacks before and that's what he's capable of. To see that at the highest level in the biggest tournament you can get is great. It shows you where this guy's (Miller) going with his cricket career. To get JP also in good form, he's been a little bit out of touch with injuries, to see him bat like that is very pleasing."

De Vil l iers was equal ly impressed with the tenacity shown by Zimbabwe, and tipped them to upset a big nation further on in the tournament.

"I'm very happy with the performance," De Villiers said of his team.

"You've got to give credit to the Zimbabwe players, they played a really good game today. No doubt that the wicket played a big part in them getting ahead early on, it was a really difficult wicket to battle on in the first 20 overs.

"The wicket got a little easier in our innings and David and JP made full use of that, they played exceptionally well with a great partnership that won us the game today.

"I'm very, very satisfied with our first win. These guys (Zimbabwe) can play some cricket. Like I said before, they beat Australia not long ago, and I won't be surprised if they upset a couple of teams in this World Cup."

The squad has been given two days off and will begin their preparations on Wednesday for their second match against India in Melbourne on Saturday.

Mission Sani Pass 2015 accomplished

Six determined hikers from the Smurfs Hiking Club took on the challenge to summit the rugged and spectacular mountains of Southern Drakensberg on the border of South Africa and Lesotho. The steep ascend and high altitude conditions could not damper the spirits of these hard-core mountain adventurers. The club successfully summited the dangerous Sani Pass at an altitude of 8600 feet above sea level.

Loca l exper t and ve te ran adventurer (Underberg), Mathew Wiggill described the current state of the Sani Pass as the worst in 35 years. Massive rock falls and landslides made this summit attempt dangerous and yet visually spectacular.

A special mention must be made of the only lady in the team, who inspired and displayed tremendous strength and courage during the tough three day expedition, said team leader, Vimal Mothilal. This club is known for their true grit and spirit and continues to inspire and be inspired from ordinary people with brave hearts he added.

Oceanville pick up hat trick of wins

This past weekend saw Oceanville Cricket Club pick up a treble of victories in the under 16, A and B divisions respectively.

The busy schedule got under way at 9 am at the Gledhow grounds when the under 16s playing in their first league game welcomed a vibrant Nkobongo outfit. Oceanville batted first, posting 77 for 6 in their allotted overs. Ugesan the only batsmen to reach double figures (15) that included two 4's. The score line was aided mainly due to a wayward bowling attack from Nkobongo conceding 41 extras. Agreement was the only bowler to record respectable figures of 4 overs 3 wickets for 8 runs.

Nkobongos run chase was in tatters from the first over as paceman David wreaked havoc to their l ine-up, claiming 5 wickets for 5 runs in his 4 overs. Nkobongo were dismissed for 36, handing the young Oceanville outfit a memorable debut victory and David deservedly being named man-of-the-match.

At midday the Oceanville B team locked horns with Doringkop at the Country

Club grounds. Doringkop were sent in to bat first and posted a moderate 77 all out on a slow wicket. Celompilo top scored with 20 consisting of three 4 ' s . P ick of the Oceanville bowlers were Lavesh and Joedon claiming 3 wickets apiece.

Keeping an eye on the weather and the bonus points in sight, Oceanville entered the run chase, confidently chasing down the target with the loss of just 2 wickets.

The afternoon fixture between Oceanville A and Ashrafiya at Gledhow was played very tactfully by both t e a m s a s t h e w e a t h e r condit ions deteriorated. Winning the toss was of huge s i g n i f i c a n c e a n d t h e Oceanville skipper, did just that by winning the toss and electing to bat first, sending his charges in with a clear game plan. Openers Shaylen Govende r and Tr inesh "Porky" Deodat put on 111 for the first wicket. Govender was dismissed for an aggressive 72, smashing eight 4's and two 6's whilst Deodat played a patient innings for 40. Oceanville declared on 149/1 in the 18th over, setting

got stuck into the opposition, who hoped and prayed that the rain Gods would heed their call and save them, but it was to no avail. The scorecard resembled a poultry farm with 6 ducks. Sashin Saddayan made the new ball swing both ways leaving the batsmen bemused as he claimed 5 wickets for 8 runs and Jureno Govinder ably assis ted picking up 4 for 14 from his 4 over spell. Ashrafiya managed 23 all out, giving Oceanville a dominant victory by 126 runs. The tactics of Ashrafiya to open with their tail enders and youngsters to defend and time-waste failed miserably.

Captain Ramsingh was d e l i g h t e d w i t h t h e performances of all three teams and believes that the club is headed in the right direction and does not need a change in ethos as the spirit is always high and maintained that everyone involved with the club know their role.

He thanked players for making a sacr i f ice on Valentine's Day and hopes to end the season in the 'top four'.
