Railway homes plagued

By Xpress Reporter

waDukuza, like much of South Africa, is dealing Kwith and examining its

conscience towards foreign nationals; still has a plethora of social ills to overcome before next year's watershed local elections.

An area that town folk might think is in the twilight zone, Russell Street; is home to many social ills that have been gone unnoticed for years and years until now.

Ex-KDM Councillor and Russell Street resident, Shabir Dawood together with his rate paying neighbours has been on the front line of multiple robberies, drug dens, murders and prostitution.

Their attempts to get the relevant authorities to address the above social ills have brought on a frustration that is never ending.

Dawood himself has been a victim of multiple home break ins. He has opened cases at the police station and went to various KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM)

SERIOUS STATE: Residents are concerned about the safety of people living in the Railway homes

departments to raise the alarm on activities taking place in the Railway housing area and its periphery.

Another resident / businessman, who will remain anonymous, said that he personally approached Transnet and met with the chief in charge.

Transnet Property spokesman, Mboniso Sigonyela, said that Transnet Property has been made aware of the condition of the properties.

“The company is attending to the situation. Concerned residents may contact our regional office.”

The Xpress Times together with ex-councillor Dawood visited the Railway Housing area and found more problems.

Ambiguous streetlights with one damaged and another that lit up the daytime sky. Potholes with elliptical shapes and a manhole cover missing (this is a feature of KwaDukuza for close to a year). Dawood pointed out a situation where a supposed drug house was

facing a prominent High School.

“A drug house is directly opposite the S t a n g e r S o u t h Secondary School and I have notified the Department of Education about this,” he said.

He added that the ex-Railway chief's widow was forcibly removed from her Rai lway home due to intimidation. Dawood also sa id tha t i t “cos t me thousands of rands to cut the trees and weeds” after approaching KDM about the growing situation.

“My neighbour suffered through two hold ups when his property was broken into in August and September 2014 and another neighbour was robbed two weeks ago when copper pipes were stolen,” said Dawood.

ANNIVERSARY: ANC National Chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbethe (centre) graced the Greater KwaDukuza Region's: “Freedom Day Rally” at the Groutville Sports Ground on Sunday. She is flanked by ANC Regional Chairperson Councillor Ricardo Mthembu (left) and ANC National Executive Committee (NEC)

member Nomacawe Mafu (right)

Public upset over CT Scan machineBy Xpress Reporter

It was a historic day for the Stanger Provincial Hospital when they launched their Computerized Tomography (CT) scan facility on Tuesday, 8 May 2012 (three years ago).

The ire of the public though over the period of which the machine has been “out of order” is frightening. Speculation is that the facility has been on ice from a period of 6

months to a year. The 12 million rand space age

technology was operational since 10 April 2012 and at the time saw 100 patients in 4 weeks.

The hospital was quoted at the time as saying: “the hospital sees a lot of head injuries at the weekends and at the end of the month.”

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Stanger

Provincial Hospital, Slindile Mzila, a new and more advanced CT scan machine will arriving in June 2015.

S h e a d d e d t h a t t h eD e p a r t m e n t o f H e a l t hKwaZulu-Natal relayed the message of the arrival of the new state-of-the-art machine that will be imported.

“There were no deaths that resulted due to the absence of a CT Scan machine,” said Mzila.

INITIATIVE: ZMS have partnered with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs; KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) and Khabokedi Youth and Waste for an 'Adopt a Spot' project on Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Indigenous trees were planted along the back entrance of the school in Lindley Street and the school's Eco-Club once again urges residents and business houses to refrain from dumping in the area

World Press Freedom DayBy Xpress Reporter

World Press Freedom Day is annually observed on Friday, 3 May 2015 to inform the international community that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental human rights. This day reminds people that many journalists brave death or face jail to bring daily news to the public. Media p r o f e s s i o n a l s , i n c l u d i n g photojournalists, who risk their lives in the line of duty, are recognised on World Press Information Day.

It is an opportunity to: celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend the media f rom at tacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

World Press Freedom Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1993 as an outgrowth of the Seminar on Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. This seminar took place in Namibia in 1991 and led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media.

The Windhoek Declaration called to establish, maintain and foster an independent, pluralistic and free press. It emphasised the importance of a free press for developing and maintaining democracy in a nation, and for economic

development. World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3, the date on which the Windhoek Declaration was adopted.

Although World Press Freedom Day has only been celebrated since 1993, it has much deeper roots in the United Nations. Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration on Human Rights states that everyone “has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers”.

Stanger High School was established in 1873 when Stanger was proclaimed as a town. The

town then had 53 families. A little house on the corner of Jackson and Hulett Streets, s e r v e d a s t h e S t a n g e r Government School.

The School was referred to as the “White School” because the first Headmaster was Mr White and two members of the Hulett family in Polly and Sarah served as educators.

The logbook dated the 5th August 1895 indicates an enrolment of 75 learners which included 18

Indian learners. There was Hendrik and Frasie Hoogvorst and Amod Goolam and Kisson. Next to Kisson sat Charles Bond and his sister Cecilia. Ivan Logan shared a bench with Latchman

We are all God's children

I believe our good attitudes produce true gratitude. South Africa belongs to all who live in it. Remember, the world is in God's hands and he does not believe in colour, race and which country you belong to because I believe we are all his children but in this world we divide ourselves. The violent xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals are very sad. While government claims that South Africa has a liberal and open system that allows everyone to live in the country so long as they have the correct documents, recent xenophobic attacks do not support this police. Why has multi-culturalism in the much-vaunted “rainbow nation” become so dangerously unstable? President Jacob Zuma has assured foreigners living in South Africa that they are

protected by a friendly legislative system which accommodates everyone. I truly believe that the victory over apartheid wasbolstered by the unending help from our neighbouring countries, their citizens and governments. Many of our political activists were forced into exile in other countries. Therefore I say, we need to balancethe way we treat those who gave us refuge during our times of need with the perception that refugees are a socio-economic burden. I hope that government would put in place necessary measures to curb xenophobic attacks on migrants. God bless South Africa

Joshua loved summer because summer was the beginning of all good things; like sunny days, bike rides, no school and sticky, drippy popsicles. But Joshua especially loved summer because he could explore his backyard. He liked to find bugs and spiders and anything else that creeped or crawled. He put them in glass jars and poked holes in the lids. He watched them move and slide and flutter. They were his treasures and he kept watch on them, every day, every hour ... and on some days, if he was lucky, every minute!

One day, Joshua came across something strange hanging off a leaf of the sycamore tree. It was odd; it was small like a rose bud, but firm like a snail's shell. He thought about how nice it looked, so different; so strangely-shaped. It reminded him of silly putty, but in the shape of a shell from the beach. What what it was, he thought to himself. And what was it doing here? Joshua liked it so much, that he thought about taking it off the tree and finding a home for it in one of his jars.

But he couldn't add it to the spider jar, and all the eight-legged things, because it was much too simple. This thing didn't have any legs, let alone eight. That didn't work. He couldn't add it to the beautiful ladybug jar, because it was much too dull. It didn't have spots, or stripes, or dots or lines. It was plain and bare. No, it wouldn't fit into that jar either.

The ChrysallisBy Heather Spiva

He couldn't add it to the worm jar, because it didn't move and was much too still. He didn't think it would like the dirt anyway. This thing hadn't moved since he'd found it. No, not those jar. He couldn't add it to his cricket jar, because it was silent and much too quiet.

In fact, it didn't make a single sound. It was so simple and silent that for a moment, he wondered why he liked it to begin with. What could it do for him other than hang on the tree and wave in the wind? Joshua stared at it, craning his neck for signs of life. "What am I going to do with you? You are simple, dull, still and quiet. And there isn't a jar for you." He decided to leave it alone and think about it. He was cer tain that by tomorrow, he'd know what to do. The next day, Joshua went to look at his treasures. They were all so special, so beautiful, so active, and so loud. And then he thought about the odd one; the one without a jar; the one hanging in the tree like a Christmas ornament. Joshua went to the tree to see what he should do. But the odd shape one was gone! Instead, there was a beautiful monarch butterfly standing on its cocoon. It fluttered its wings, and stretched its legs and seemed to smile at Joshua, opening and closing his wings in display. It was stretching from a long

sleep, learning to move his beautiful wings, and taking in the sunny day.

That simple and plain shape had been a chrysalis! Joshua had learned in school that a chrysalis was the home of a caterpillar; a house for the caterpillar when it was time to grow up. And over a matter of days, it became a butterfly. Amazing! But, and he scratched his head in wonder, in which jar would the butterfly go? Joshua thought about his jars of bugs.

The butterfly wasn't simple anymore, but complicated with a design he'd never seen before!

It wasn't dull anymore, but bright and bold with colours of yellow, orange, white and black!

It wasn't still anymore. It moved its wings, faster than the worms moved in their dirt!

It wasn't quiet anymore. It was louder in shapes and design than any cricket was noisy!

The butterfly flew onto his nose, and tickled his cheeks with its wings. Joshua laughed. And then the butterfly did what the spiders, ladybugs, worms and crickets couldn't do in their jars: it flew away! Joshua loved his treasures as much as he loved summer. But that day, he found his favourite one: the butterfly, because the simple, dull, still and quiet thing became the most beautiful - and most free treasure - after all.

miracles in my life. She told me all my problems without mentioning anything to

were my friends and relatives. She performed a special prayer, washed away all

my bad luck and cleansed my home, gave me a love potion with a ring for my financial

problems in less than five days, my husband was always by my side and my

enemies confessed and asked for forgiveness.

Mandeni confirms league winners

The Mandeni Local Football Association confirmed that their soccer champions are Real Hope Academy who have won the league with 9 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

Champions: Teal Hope Academy

The duo of Vinesh Geanballey and Jerry Govender were crowned the Sidney Naicker and family sponsored doubles darts champions at the tournament hosted by the KwaDukuza Darts Association at the North Coast Tavern last Wednesday. They beat Vishalin Parmasivan and Jerry Arunachellam in the finals.

Winner and President of KDDA, Jerry Govender thanked sponsor Sidney Naicker and his family for their generosity.

Geanballey and Govender did not have it all their way in the first quarter final. They came up against a rampant Vasa Rungasamy and Justin Naidoo who shocked them by winning the first game. However Geanballey and Govender quickly regrouped to win the final two games and secure a semi-final berth.

In the second quarter final, Nine Pillay and Devan Gounden hardly worked up a sweat as they clean swept passed Ashley Haripersaad and Terrence Subban beating them 2-0 to book a place in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, in the bottom half of the draw, Parmasivan and Arunachellam had no problem beating Charlie Pillay and Balu Pillay in straight games (2-0) to set up a semi-final clash clash against Darrel Shanmagum and Neeran Somnath who had to dig deep in their reserves to beat the rampant duo of Terrence Pillay and Vigen

Murugan after coming from behind to win 2-1.

In the first semi-final, Geanballey and Govender were in scintillating form hammering Pillay and Gounden 2-0 to reach the final whilst Parmasivan and Arunachellam wasted no time in beating Shanmagum and Somnath in straight games.

The finals kept up to its classic reputation with both teams vying for honours. Geanballey and Govender won the first game but Parmasivan and Arunachellam bounced back to win the second game and force the game into the third and decisive game. Both pairs threw pin-point darts. However, Geanballey and Govender outsmarted Parmasivan and Arunachellam at the end closing first to claim the doubles championships.

Darrel Shanmagum claimed a spot in the end of year 180 cup after scoring the maximum of 180 (three triple 20).

Tonight (Wednesday), KDDA launches their doubles league at the North Coast Tavern starting at 7pm. The league will beplayed over 11 rounds consisting of 2 x 701 and 4 x 501. After the 11 rounds, thetop 2 teams will be declared winners and runners up. The top 8 teams will then contest a knockout tournament with the winners being declared the undisputed doubles champions.

R e i g n i n g K w a D u k u z a V o l l e y b a l l Association 2014 league champions, started of their defence of their league title with a victory in the new l o o k E Z E ' s Electrical Premier League with victory in the opening of the first round league games played at the association courts l a s t T h u r s d a y beating prodigal s o n s M a n o r i n straight sets.

Manor showed resilience in their first game after nearly three years of being aloof, took the game to the league c h a m p i o n s . However, Grove End, with their dual attack of Neil Perumal and Vinnie Singh out-witted Manor to take the first set 25-21. Grove End continued their rich vein of form (securing the Top 8 and Caminamix Easter championship) in the second set and secured a convincing 25-18 victory.

Grove End remains favourites to retain the EZE's Electrical crown.

2014 league runners up, KSST were stunned in their encounter with the new look Warriors Sport outfit from Shakaskraal. Nolen Govender Mark Pillay and Sherwin Adyappa combined well to lead Warriors to a shocking 25-20 win in the first set. However, KSST rallied back to claim the second set 25-21 with the comeback spear-headed by Sherwin Daniels and Carnell Joseph. KSST maintained the pressure in the third and decisive set to race to a 15-9 victory for a 2-1 overall victory and maintained pressure on early log leaders, Grove End.

Only one game was played between

Grove End jubilant after first league victory.

Grove End start defence of title on winning note

Darnall United and Cool Leaders in the newly formed Division I league. In what was a humdinger of the night, 2014 social league runners up Darnall had to dig deep into their reserves to keep out the rampant Cool Leaders outfit. Both teams fought tooth and nail in their opening fixture but it was Darnall that kept their nerves for a tightly contested 25-22, 25-22 victory.

All eyes will be on the Premier League tomorrow when Randsons are due to play. Randsons have been outdone this season in the knockout cups and will need to up their tempo if they want to become real contenders for the premier league title. Eyes will also be on the Division 1 league when the rest of the teams, namely Frendz, Sunbrook and Manor Old Boys will be on display and this should give an indication on which team

is going to come up tops at the end of the season.

United Cricket Club have secured a berth in the finals of the Warriors Sports sponsored T20 cricket knockout tournament after knocking out Oceanville A in an unfortunate Duckworth Lewis (DL) decision. The semi-final, played under the aegis of the iLembe and District Cricket Union took place at the Gledhow Ground this past Sunday.

The second semi final between Oceanville A and United in the Warriors Sport T20 KO was interrupted by rain. A day prior to the match clubs were warned that rain was forecasted and that the DL system would be used if necessary.

The match commenced under perfect weather conditions. Oceanville won the toss and elected to bat first and were 78 all out in the 20th over. B. Kalligan top-scored with 23 which included 2 massive sixes and he was assisted by T. Deodhat (12). Aboo Ismail was the destroyer in chief claiming 4/16.

United commenced their innings with the weather looking good for play. However, in the 9th over

United to contest the Warriors Sport KO final

Seen is the rain drenched United outfit after their win with Tournament Director and CEO of Warriors Sport, Rajiv Mathapershad

there was a bit of a drizzle. With the score on 39/5 and with Oceanville at an advantage, United requested that the match be called off. Oceanville objected and in consultation with the umpire Radeshwar Singh of Manor, the game continued. Before the start of the 11th over, with the dr izz le remain ing cons is tent , Oceanvi l le requested the match be called off. The ruling umpire allowed the game to continue amid protests from United with the score on 48/5. Both teams were desperate for a win or risk being knocked out. However, the match had to be called off at 11.5 overs after the heavens opened up. United were 54/5. M. Mohamed top-scored with 15 and M Hoosen 11. R. Ramsingh claimed 2/14.

The tournament director, Rajiv Mathapershad, in consu l t a t ion wi th the captains and umpires used t h e D u c k w o r t h - L e w i s calculator to determine the winner. According to the DL system, United's revised target was 53 for a win. The match was therefore awarded to United.

Coach Shane Harris of

O c e a n v i l l e w a s disappointed with the outcome, but nevertheless stated that it was fun to play in the tournament and congratulated United for qualifying for the final albeit considering them lucky.

The finals is scheduled for 11 am on Sunday 3 May at the Country Club grounds, which would be in readiness for play.

Nkobongo, who are in a cricket final for the first time in their history, are going in as the underdogs. However, United should not take them lightly. This was proven against Manor A.

Tournament Director Rajiv warned that the Umpires are the sole judges of the game and that no interference or manipulation of the game or grounds from teams or executives would be tolerated.
