Several events began to draw America into the war:

1. The Lend-Lease Act: a. Though the United States was

neutral, Roosevelt wanted the democratic nations of Europe (mainly France and Great Britain) to survive.

b. in 1941, Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act, lending supplies to any country whose defense was critical to U.S. security, in exchange for military bases in Greenland and Iceland

c. The U.S. ultimately provided the Allies with $50 billion in supplies.

a. The attack crippled the U.S. Pacific fleet, sinking or damaging 8 battleships, 13 other ships, 188 planes, and killing 2,400 people.

Japanese Interment Camps:

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, American’s were scared and living in fear.

In 1942, the U.S. government authorized the relocation and internment (imprisonment/confinement) of about 110,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese who lived along the Pacific Coast of the United States.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the internment with Executive Order 9066, issued February 19, 1942, which allowed local military commanders to designate "military areas" as "exclusion zones," from which "any or all persons may be excluded."

The internment of Japanese Americans was applied unequally throughout the United States.

All Japanese and Japanese Americans who lived on the West Coast of the United States were interned.

In Hawaii, where the 150,000-plus Japanese Americans composed over one-third of the population, an estimated 1,200 to 1,800 were interned. Of those interned, 62% were American citizens.

The Pearl Harbor attack brought the enormous military might of the U.S. into the war.

On June 6, 1944, the U.S. led the D-Day invasion of Normandy which was a Nazi occupied territory.

In April of 1945 the Soviet and American troops meet and Germany surrenders– Hitler commits suicide shortly after.

By August 15, 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allies after the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Prior to World War II, Georgia was in a poor economic state. After America’s entrance into the war, Georgia gained economic prosperity as federal money poured into the state:

Bell Aircraft:

In 1942, Bell Aircraft built the Bell Bomber plant in Marietta, Georgia to produce the B-29 bombers.

Marietta became home to 28,000 Bell Aircraft employees who built 663 B-29’s during World War II.

Bell Aircraft offered multiple job opportunities to women and African-Americans.

Savannah and Brunswick Shipyards:

Savannah and Brunswick, both deep-sea ports, provided ideal naval yards for the construction of war ships.

Georgia became the home of the Liberty Ship, a large, simple, square-hulled ship design to carry supplies to troops (grain, trucks, mail, etc.).

Military Bases:

Georgia became home to more military training bases than any other state in the U.S. besides Texas.

Georgia’s military installations included: Fort Benning (Columbus), Fort Gordon (Augusta), Fort McPherson (Atlanta), Robins Air Service Command (Macon), and Hunter Field (Savannah)

Senator Richard B. Russell: Former Georgia Governor,

Richard Russell, was elected to the U.S. Senate for seven consecutive terms.

Russell became the Chairman of the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee which was responsible for overseeing the U.S. Armed Forces.

Russell used his power and influence to bring bases to Georgia.

Representative Carl Vinson

Carl Vinson served in the United States House of Representative for 50 years.

During his 50 years in Congress, Vinson concentrated mostly on military matters.

Representative Vinson teamed with Senator Russell to bring many of the military installations to Georgia.

Fun Fact: In 1973, President Nixon named a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson.

One of the most horrible events in human history was the Holocaust that occurred during World War II at the hands of Hitler and Nazi Germany.

The Holocaust describes the persecution and murder of six million Jews and six million other minorities by the Nazis.

Hitler was motivated by anti-Semitism, and his goal was the destruction of all Jews and others inferior to the German master race.

Jews and others were forced into ghettos, slave labor camps, and ultimately, extermination/death camps.

Georgians are determined not to forget the Holocaust or other forms of racial persecution and genocide.

In 1986, Governor Joe Frank Harris established the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust.

In 1988, the commission became a permanent state agency whose goal is to teach future generations about the dangers of prejudice, racial hatred, and genocide.

Jewish organizations like the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and the Jewish Family and Career Services provides assistance to Holocaust survivors.

Despite the opposition of Eugene Talmadge, many Georgians felt uniquely close to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

President Roosevelt suffered from a painful, paralyzing disease called polio.

To treat his polio, Roosevelt often visited Warm Springs, Georgia, where the natural warm spring waters provided therapeutic pain relief for their pain.

Roosevelt established the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927 and built a home nearby after his presidential election in 1932.

He visited so often that the house was nicknamed the “Little White House”.

Roosevelt’s exposure to rural Georgia during his visits to Warm Springs helped him create effective New Deal programs that would address real problems.

Many of Roosevelt’s New Deal policies assisted farmers and youth, and the National Youth Administration (NYA) helped female and minority youth between 16 and 25 receive jobs so they could finish their education.
