A drug is a substance that can be taken in a variety of ways to produce expected and

welcome physical and/or psychological effects on the person taking it, but also cause some

effects that are both unpleasant and unwanted.

What it does?

1. Affects your coordination, speech and judgement

2. Slows your reactions.3. Makes your muscles get

tired more quickly.4. Damages internal organs

What it does?

1. Causes nose, throat and chest irritations.

2. Makes you short of breath.

3. Increases your risk of developing heart disease, lung cancer, bronchitis and other diseases.

SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE VS UNACCEPTABLE

Socially Acceptable Drugs:They may be prescribed by a doctor or can be brought over the counter.

2 examples are paracetamol and aspirin.

Sociably Unacceptable Drugs:

These are illegal and unacceptable to most people.

All have negative effects and can be dangerous, in some cases leading to death.

As an athlete use of the above drugs would obviously be highly detrimental to

performance.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS

These can enhance a persons performance in some way, either in physical activity and training or daily life.

They include some drugs that are socially acceptable and many that are illegal.

Peptide hormones drug that causes other hormones to be produced

Effect- Increase your muscle sizeAllow athletes to train harder Increase the number of red blood cells. (EPO)

Examples Human growth hormone (hGH) and Erythropoietin (EPO)

Side EffectshGH – High blood pressure, heart disease, infertility and cancer.Women may grow facial and body hair.Mood swings, aggression and anxiety.

EPO- thickens blood therefore greater risk of heart attack and stroke.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS Beta BlockersDrugs used to control the heart rate and have a calming and

relaxing effect.

Effect Maintain low heart rate.Reduce stress levels and anxiety is reduced.Lower blood pressure.

Side effects:Reduce a fits persons heart rate to a dangerous level.TirednessDepressionNausea and diarrhoeaInsomnia and nightmares

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS Anabolic SteroidsDrugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone

and promote bone and muscle growth.

Effects- Increase your muscle size.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS Narcotic AnalgesicsDrugs used to reduce pain.

Effect KILL pain by suppressing the CNS.Injuries and fatigue don’t affect performance.

ExamplesMorphine, heroin and methadone.

Side effects:Addictive Feeling less pain can cause long term injuriesLead to constipation and low blood pressure.Loss of balance and co-ordinationLoss of concentration.

DiureticsDrugs that elevate the rate of urine production

Effects- Make you urinate, causing weight loss.

Can mask traces of other drugs in the body. Side EffectsCramp, dehydration and dizziness.Kidney problems.
