Dear Members of the Xavier Community,

By the time you read this letter the peaceful grace as well as the hectic pace of Christmas have

passed, and we move on with our New Year of good wishes and hope. My prayers are with you and

your families that the new year will be filled with God’s blessings for each of you.

I hope you enjoy reading through the latest edition of Xavier Today, and share in our pride of so

many accomplishments of our faculty, students, and alumni. Our school year has been filled with

excitement, including last month’s wonderful performance of It’s a Wonderful Life by students of

Xavier and Mercy High Schools, our own beautiful Christmas concert and art exhibit, our exciting

and successful soccer and cross country seasons, and, of course, our state championship in football.

Congratulations to coach Sean Marinan, our assistant coaches, and team members on their victory.

We are all very proud of each of them.

We at school are already busy thinking ahead to the future. We have greeted dozens of eighth

graders who have spent a day at Xavier shadowing our students through their classes, and we are

forming what we expect will be a Class of 2015 of approximately 250 students. Looking further

ahead, we have been putting final touches on our new strategic plan to be presented to our board of

directors this January. You will certainly hear more about that in the second semester as we present

to you our plans for the coming five years to continue to enhance our facilities and our academic

and extracurricular programs.

I think it is also important for us to remember that the accomplishments and successes

highlighted in this publication are built upon what the Fundamental Principles of the Xaverian

Brothers refer to as the “ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life.” Every day our faculty, staff

and students work together to make our school a special place. In class, sports and activities each

day the foundation is laid for success, and we all hope God will continue to bless our students as

they continue to bring to life the Christian meaning of our school motto, “Be A Man.”

Contributing to our success are all of you who so generously support us through our Ad Book

campaign, other fund raising activities, and our annual fund drive. We continually welcome new

members into our St. Francis Xavier Society, and are most grateful for their support. I am grateful to

all whose contributions help us provide financial aid to approximately 30% of our students and help

us close the gap between our tuition and our actual operating expenses of $1400 per student.

Some of you who are parents of Xavier students may know that in December we gave each young

man a card printed with what we are calling the Xavier High School Prayer (at left). The sentiments

in the prayer were written by seniors Chris Danko and Francis Rowland. In closing, as we at Xavier

promise to keep you in our prayers, we ask you to pray along with us.

2010 Falcon Football PerFect season

class ll state champions and #1 in connecticut

The 2010 season of Xavier’s varsity football certainly turned into a memorable one for the team, the school, and Falcon football fans everywhere. On December 10th, 4,862 fans (the vast majority in Xavier’s cheering section)

came to Rentschler Field in East Hartford and celebrated Xavier’s perfect season (13–0) as they posted their final victory of 24–13 over Trumbull High School (11–3) and captured the CIAC Class LL Championship.

Xavier’s offense operated on all cylinders posting 499 yards, 281 on the ground (229 yards and 2 touchdowns by junior Mike Mastroianni) and 218 in the air (junior Pat D’Amato had 195 yards on 5 of 8 passing). Senior Kosi Broderick pulled down 4 receptions for 162 yards and 1 TD. The extra points came from senior kicker Joe Lynch who had a first quarter field goal to put the falcons ahead for good in the game.

Defensively, junior Sean Marinan led the way with 7 tackles (5 solo and 2 assisted) as the team held Trumbull to nine first downs and 209 yards. All year the Falcon defense has been highly praised. In thirteen games they allowed less than 9 points per game (116), while the offense ground out better than 27 points

per game (357). On three occasions, Xavier held its opponent scoreless. In five other games the defense held their adversaries to less than ten points.

As the final State polls were tabulated and released, Xavier held on to the number one spot over Class L champion Masuk High School (also 13–0). The New Haven Register and Hartford Courant polls were the first to post their final results.

perfect 10–0 season. They began with a much heralded SCC season opener with defending SCC Division I East and Class L state champion Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Xavier was the 2009 SCC Division I West and Class LL semifinalist. The final score was Xavier 22 – Notre Dame 15.

And so the regular season went: September, October, November, to the final game of the regular season, the cross-town rivalry between Xavier and Middletown High School. Coming into this final game of the season Middletown, was sporting one of its best seasons in recent memory (7 – 2) with visions of upsetting Xavier’s unblemished record. The game was hard fought, but Xavier was not to be denied. Final score Xavier 27 – Middletown 14.

Then it was on to the Class LL playoffs. Five days after the Thanksgiving Day victory over Middletown, #1 seed Xavier took on West Haven for the second time this year in the quarter-final game. In their first meeting, West Haven had scored more points than any other opponent during the season while falling to Xavier 42 – 28. This time Xavier’s defense held them to a single score as the Falcons advanced to the semi-final game with a 28 – 7 victory at Palmer Field.

The semi-final was played at Southern CT State University’s Jess Dow Field followed just 4 days later. Glastonbury made Falcon fans nervous with a quick score on the opening kick-off. But once again, Xavier responded with both offense and defense to move into the Championship. The score: 24 – 13. n

D ecember 3, 2010: This morning Xavier’s Peer Ministers facilitated a Prayer Service to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis Xavier. The students presented videos they had

created highlighting key points in the life of St. Francis Xavier. The videos were interspersed with information and meditative thoughts as they apply today.

On the feast of St. Francis Xavier the Xaverian Brothers and their lay colleagues throughout the world gather to prayerfully remember and celebrate our patron whose zeal for souls and dedication to spreading the Gospel message was the inspiration for Theodore James Ryken. Our founder would certainly be pleased with the fact that today there are thirteen high schools in the United States sponsored by his Xaverian Brothers and that his vision is carried on today by so many dedicated men and women who devote themselves to the care of over 12,000 students in these schools. Theodore Ryken’s vision was to found a community of Brothers who would be missionaries to the world, and so he would also be pleased with our Brothers and their colleagues serving in schools and other ministries in Kenya, the Congo, Bolivia, Haiti, Sudan and Lithuania.

Each year in Xaverian schools it has become the custom to honor one member of the faculty or staff with the Ryken Award, presented to a person chosen by co-workers as an exemplary model of Christian dedication. Here at Xavier past reward recipients include Mrs. Linda Charpentier, Brother Thomas Fahey, Mrs. Andrea Hoisl, Brother Robert Houlihan, Mr. Tony Jaskot, Mr. Richard Magner, Brother Thomas Ryan, Ms. Jayne Vitale, Brother James Boyle, and last year Mrs. Joan Tomasiello.

When asked for award nominees, faculty and staff are asked to offer explanations for their selection. Comments offered for this year’s Ryken Award winner include:• An outstanding teacher• Totally dedicated to the well-being of our students• Works well with everyone• Compassionate and understanding in his dealings with others• Intelligent, yet humble, never boastful• Soft-spoken, yet ready with clear, reasonable and helpful

GaRGano Bio BRief: Mr. Gargano is the Academic dean who oversees sophomores, juniors and seniors. In this position, Mr. Gargano oversees schedules, grades, and other related academic responsibilities. Mr. Gargano is currently in his thirteenth year at Xavier High School. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Mr. Gargano teaches one mathematics course and co-moderates Xavier’s Math Team. during his tenure here, he has also served as Mathematics department Chair and been a co-manager of the school bookstore.

Mr. Gargano was raised in nearby Colchester, the son of Frank and Norma Gargano, and is the husband of Mrs. debbie Gargano, Xavier’s School librarian. He is a graduate of the University of Hartford, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. Mr. Gargano is a fan of the Boston Red Sox, and he enjoys playing softball.

G eorge V. Keithan, Jr. (Xavier Class of 1981) is the original

founder of Consulting Engineering Services (CES) in Middletown, and serves as the studio director of two multi-disciplined design teams specializing in technologically advanced building systems for many different project types. He is a “hands-on” practicing engineer, well-versed in local, state and federal codes throughout the United States.

Consulting Engineering Services (CES) is a MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) engineering firm that is wholeheartedly committed to sustainable design and has a very strong “practice what you preach” mentality.

Alumni Designs and Builds First Net-Zero Energy Home in Connecticut

In June of 2009, President and CEO of CES, George V. Keithan, Jr. decided to commit to fostering an entirely new lifestyle by designing the first Net-Zero Energy Home in Connecticut, which coincidentally is now his family’s private residence. With the hard work of CES employees designing the MEP systems, J. W. Huber Architect LLC, Essex Squared LLC, and numerous contractors, the home was completed in November 2009, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

This stunning new construction single-family home is 3,600 square feet and sits on 14 acres in Killingworth, CT. The design approach to this project was to create a home that was not only energy efficient but that fit into the New England landscape. The cedar-shingled Farmhouse style home, with a post and beam barn and freestanding stone walls, is a working organic vegetable farm, Christmas tree farm, and home to fifty chickens for their organic eggs.

A big benefit for all was the learning experience. This was the first opportunity to build a zero-energy home for everyone involved. Each participant discovered new and greener building materials and techniques that they could apply to their next projects.

The barn roof has sixty-five solar photo voltaic panels that provides all the electrical power for the residence. The main

house roof has ten solar hot water panels for heating the domestic hot water. Altogether these panels generate 20,000 kwhr/yr of electricity. The house also has a water-to-water standing column Geothermal HVAC system that is also used for the domestic water well.

A lexander Cross, Xavier Senior and pianist in the Xavier Jazz band was selected to attend the Eastman School of Music Summer Jazz program at the University of Rochester this

past July. Alex won a corresponding jazz competition in New Haven last spring and was awarded the Danko award, named after piano teacher and one of the directors of the Summer Jazz Studies at Eastman, Harold Danko. The win earned him a full scholarship to the summer program. Alex was one of 12 jazz pianists in the nation selected from CD auditions.

The Summer Jazz program is described on their website as “a rigorous two-week program that provides an intensive, performance based experience for highly motivated students currently in grades 9-12 and is ideally suited for those considering jazz studies at the collegiate level. Students work directly with the renowned Eastman School of Music jazz faculty during the two-week session in a rigorous program designed to enhance improvisational and ensemble skills.”

Alex, who lives with his family in Wallingford, also attended Xavier’s Leadership Institute (XLI) later in the summer. XLI participants received first-hand experience in a variety of leadership opportunities. Additionally, they have a chance to reflect upon and to use leadership theory and skills. Alex represented his group on the song committee. n

O n November 2, 2010, Mike McCoy, former NFL lineman and now President of Mike McCoy Ministries, addressed Xavier’s student body with an inspiring message based on his

personal life experiences. His talk was one stop on a whirlwind tour of Catholic schools in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Mike began with a short video presentation highlighting his football career at Notre Dame, with the Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders and NY Giants. He quickly enlisted senior volunteers to help illustrate his talk.

them develop a larger vision for their lives. Mike will deliver a faith-based message of hope and encouragement to students in Catholic schools that will help them be morally focused, overcome challenges and deal with peer pressure to develop the self-confidence to achieve true success.

tHe need: Our children are bombarded by secular images of aberrant behaviors on a constant basis. To assume that they are capable on their own to withstand the peer pressure to conform to their friends expectations is certainly short-sighted.

Mike McCoy Ministries has intervened to help prevent suicides, fight drug addiction, curtail promiscuous behavior and to inform students that help is available. n

mcCoy Bio BRief: Mike McCoy is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania and a graduate of Cathedral Prep High School. He graduated from the University of Notre dame with a BA in Economics where he played football and was a consensus All-American. He was chosen UPI lineman of the year and was sixth in the Heisman Trophy balloting his senior year. He was the #1 draft choice of the Green Bay Packers where he played defensive tackle. He played eleven years in the NFl — seven with Green Bay, two with the Oakland Raiders and two with the New york Giants.

Kevin Kosciuk ’11 earns USa Swimming award 2009-10 Scholastic all-america…

Senior Kevin Kosciuk from Cheshire has earned the Scholastic All-America

Award from USA Swimming. A key member of last year’s swimming team, and a co-captain this year, Kevin also earned a position on Xavier’s Principal’s List for his accomplishments in the classroom.

The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association recently

released its 2010 All Academic Sailing Team, based upon the 2009-2010 GPAs. Senior midshipman Clark Hayes of the U.S. Naval Academy (Xavier class of 2007) made the First Team for this honor. He is one of only nine sailors in the nation who were selected to the First Team (check out Clark’s GPA!).

Clark was co-captain of the 2006-2007 Xavier Sailing Team and a member of the 2006 Xavier State Championship Team. His older brother Clinton was named an All-American Sailor last spring at the University of Vermont. Clark’s father, Paul Hayes, is Head Coach of Xavier’s Sailing Team.

The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) has recognized 19 outstanding scholar athletes by their selection to the 2010 ICSA All Academic Sailing Team. The honor acknowledges the success at the highest levels – both on the water and in the classroom – of these men and women who were nominated by their respective schools for academic and athletic performance during the 2009-2010 academic year.

The 2010 ICSA All Academic Team recognizes nine First Team and ten Second Team student-athletes who maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a scale of 4.00, were a key starter or reserve member of their school’s sailing team, and who had reached junior standing at his or her institution of learning in order to be considered eligible for this distinction. “Selection to the First Team acknowledges an emphasis on academic achievement,” said ICSA President Mitch Brindley. “These individuals have met a certain balance between sailing on a competitive team and academic excellence.” n

and understated farmhouse details. When the rooms aren’t filled with natural light they are lit by LED fixtures. The paint, woodwork, flooring and cabinets were all chosen because they emit low or no VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Many finishing details are of recycled materials — reused counter tops from old homes, an old barn door installed on a slider to hide the LED television, recycled doors for the interior rooms, and recycled slate for the window sills.

This year George Keithan and his wife Mary established two scholarships at Xavier. The George and Mary Keithan ’81 Scholarship was established for a deserving Xavier student or students in grade(s) ten through twelve who have achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average in the previous school year. The second scholarship bears the name of his father who passed away in 2009; The George V. Keithan, Sr. Memorial Scholarship is a College Scholarship to a graduating Xavier student who will be pursuing an Engineering program.

In addition to his daily activities with the more than fifty experienced professionals at CES, George frequently serves as an on-air expert for local and regional radio programs, addressing topics of energy saving design and construction. n

Open House 2010 and Entrance Exam Welcome Class of 2015

N ear the conclusion of the second and formal day of orientation for Xavier Freshmen in September, Xavier’s Ryken Service Society conducted a prayer service.

Members of the Society presented readings and associated thoughts to further prepare the freshmen for the beginning of their school year. They were joined by Academic Dean Mr. David Sizemore and Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. who offered comments.

A highlight of the service was the blessing and distribution of bibles to all freshmen. Fr. Gerard Mulvey O.F.M. Cap., Pastor at St. Pius X Church, Middletown blessed the bibles. The bibles were donated through the generosity of Ed Brymer and Gerri Roberts; Jeffrey R. Del Favero, Xavier class of ’78; and Richard and Margo Chiozzi. The bibles will be used as resource material throughout the students’ four years at Xavier. Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue joined the donors and Ryken Service Society members presenting the bibles before the conclusion of the prayer service.

Mr. Sizemore noted that the distribution of Bibles “made me think how this first gift you are receiving as new students, mirrors the last gift that you will receive at graduation in less than four years, your diploma.” n

24th. Early morning showers dried up and didn’t start again until just after the event ended. Even before the event was scheduled to start at 1 o’clock, families were lining up outside the front doors and the parking lots were full throughout the afternoon.

Principal Brendan donohue summed up the day in a letter to Faculty and Staff.

“Thank you to everyone for your invaluable assistance at Open House. It was a great success. There were 376 prospective students who came though the building. That is a significantly higher number than in recent years.

“Numerous visitors commented to me on how impressed they were with the visit. They spoke of the tour guides, the numerous clubs,

sports and activities, the cleanliness of the school and of all the great educational programs we offer. All of this is a testament to your dedication

and your commitment to Xavier High School and to the families we serve. I want to especially thank Br. Fahey, Mr. Sizemore, Mrs. Keereweer and the

recruitment and retention committee for their planning and organizing of the day.”

Academic dean david Sizemore reported that “378 eighth graders took the Entrance Exam for Xavier (on November 13th). This number bodes well for a large number of students who will ultimately become members of the Class of 2015.

Special thanks goes out to all of the Entrance Exam proctors, as well as Mrs. Keereweer, Mrs. Braychak, Mr. A.T. Gargano, Mr. langevin, Brother Brian, and Brother Houlihan for a job well done in the organization and administration of the Entrance Exam.”

Coach Robert Michalski Inducted to the CHSCA Hall of Fame

X avier alumnus Kevin Murphy ’67 and a 1971 graduate of Villanova University worked at the Hartford Courant through the 1970s and then ran a successful building

business until 2000. Today, an independent historian who lives in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, Kevin writes full time and has penned two books on facets of Connecticut History.

His first book Water for Hartford, The Story of the Hartford Water Works and the Metropolitan District Commission, has just been reprinted by Garnet Books, Wesleyan University Press. It is the story of how three men brought clean water to Hartford, on a massive scale. A synopsis of the book says,

“As good health is inextricably wedded to pure drinking water—and this particular concern looms larger every day—

understanding delivery systems is almost as important as the water itself… The story of Hartford’s water works is a fascinating one, for it recalls the hard work, great sacrifice, and extraordinary engineering feats necessary to deliver wholesome drinking water to a growing urban center.”

dates back to fly-fishing trips in the West Branch Valley of the Farmington River. He is also the author of The Crowbar Governor.

The Crowbar Governor, The Life and Times of Morgan Gardner Bulkeley is expected to be published and available early in 2011 by Garnet Books. Garnet Books describes the new book as the first biography of one of Connecticut’s most colorful and notorious statesmen.

“While president of Aetna Life from 1879 to 1922, Morgan Bulkeley served four terms as mayor of Hartford, two terms as Connecticut’s governor, and one term as a United States senator. His friends and business and political acquaintances were a who’s who of the Gilded Age: Samuel Clemens, J. P. Morgan, Samuel and Elizabeth Colt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, Albert Spalding, General Sherman, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Katherine Hepburn, as well as every president from Ulysses Grant to Warren Harding… It was during Bulkeley’s controversial “holdover” term as governor that he earned the nickname “Crowbar Governor.” He used a crowbar to remove a lock that had been placed on his office door after refusing to vacate the governor’s chambers on a technicality.” n

R obert Michalski, former faculty member, cross country and

track and field coach at Xavier High School, was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) Hall of Fame November 18th. The event was held at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, CT with a large crowd in attendance to support the nine new inductees, including Xavier runners, alumni, Michalski family, and friends.

The CHSCA began the Hall of Fame in 1977. Bob Michalski is the second inductee from Xavier in those 33 years. Former Xavier football coach larry McHugh was inducted in 1984. Coincidentally, larry was the Toastmaster at last night’s event.

In his acceptance remarks,

Michalski thanked Xavier for “talking him into coaching cross country.” The results of his accepting that position are now legend at the school. He also recognized his wife Kathy (pictured). They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary November 20th. The following is the write-up from the event program.

“Robert Michalski was the cross country and track and field coach at Xavier High School. He coached from 1967 until 2005 and had a 90 percent win percentage. His teams had 37 CIAC Boys Cross Country Class Championships, seven consecutive. His teams also had 21 CIAC Boys Cross Country Open Championships as well as five New England Championships. His

teams hold a national record 169 consecutive Boys Outdoor Track and Field dual victories from 1974 until 1985. In 1970 he was named CHSCA Cross Country Coach of the year. In 1974 he was named CHSCA Outdoor Track Coach of the year. He received the Connecticut Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the year and the Connecticut Sports Writers Association doc McInerney Award. Michalski served as director of CIAC Class M Indoor, Class ll Outdoor and SCC Indoor Track meets. He is a CIAC Cross Country and Track committee member. He was inducted into the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame.” n

Opening of School Mass 201033 receive awards…

The Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, Bishop of the Diocese of Norwich, was principal celebrant and homilist at the Opening of School Mass in the Arthur M. Kohs gymnasium. Bishop Cote said “The word Catholic

means universal. Xavier High School is preparing you to become part of a much larger community.” He challenged the students to do more than just succeed academically, pointing out their need to grow as members of the community. “You must learn how to view yourself and have respect for others,” Bishop Cote added.

Con-celebrating was Reverend Gerard Mulvey, O.F.M. Cap., Pastor of St. Pius X Church in Middletown. Reverend Kevin Reilly was the master of ceremonies.

Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. thanked Bishop Cote for his continued support of Xavier High School and Catholic education throughout the diocese. He also welcomed and thanked benefactors and families who were present for their contributions to Xavier.

Joseph Lynch ’11, President of the Student Activities Council, also added thanks to Bishop Cote and Brother Brian. He also noted Bishop Cote’s love of golf and presented the Bishop with a Xavier golf umbrella from the student body.

At the end of Mass, Principal Brendan Donohue announced the names of this year’s scholarship and award recipients. Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X personally greeted and congratulated each student as he presented them with their award.

The Brother Robert, C.f.X. Scholarship was established in honor of the first principal of Xavier High School and is awarded to the incoming freshman who achieved the highest score on the entrance exam - Maxwell W. Staab ’14.

The Bishop Vincent J. Hines Scholarship is named in honor of the late Bishop Hines who was the founding Bishop of Xavier High School. This scholarship is awarded to the incoming freshmen who received the next eight highest scores on the entrance exam. The recipients are Scott K. Bryden ’14, Daniel P. Colavecchio ’14, John P. Kessler ’14, Angus M. Lamont ’14, Joseph P. McCormack ’14, Seamus R. McGinley ’14, Nicholas P. Nagorski ’14, and Calvin A. Platt ’14.

The Christopher Carrozzella Scholarship was established in memory of Christopher, a member of the Class of 2004, and is awarded to a student who excels in the area of Fine Arts - J.T. Maher ’11.

The Thomas Cloutier Scholarship was established in memory of Thomas A. Cloutier, Jr., a member of the Class of 1992 -Joshua P. Santiago ’13.

The eleanor fontanella memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Fontanella and is awarded to a deserving student from Meriden or Wallingford - Marcel S. Zajac ’12.

The Rose mary fuentes loffredo Scholarship was established in memory of Mrs. Fuentes Loffredo by her family for a deserving student who has an interest in the area of Fine Arts - Jeffrey Herrera ’11.

The furstenberg Scholarship was established in memory of Christian Furstenberg, a member of the Class of 1990. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who reflects the values of scholarship, leadership and service which Christian exhibited. This year the recipient is Ryan A. Mishou ’11.

The Brother Harold Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Pacholski, uncle and aunt of Brother Harold, to recognize a student at the conclusion of his sophomore year who has excelled in the accelerated program - Andrew S. Moore ’12.

The George and mary Keithan ’81 Scholarship was established for a deserving Xavier student or students in grade(s) ten through twelve who have achieved a 3.0 or higher grade point average in the previous school year. This year’s recipient is Daniel Ramirez ’12.

The arthur Kohs Scholarship was established by Mr. Arthur Kohs, Xavier’s first Director of Athletics, to recognize a young man entering his junior or senior year who lives out Xavier’s motto “Be A Man” and who exemplifies class, hustle and determination in and out of the classroom - Sean R. Nelson ’11.

The Robert michalski Scholarship is awarded to a student based on his “character, academic performance and athletic effort” - Ian P. Albert ’11.

The Joseph Pagano Scholarship was established in memory of Mr. Pagano, a member of Xavier’s class of 1973, and is awarded to a student who excels in community service - Dominic J. Proto ’11.

The mark Rondo Scholarship was established for an incoming freshman from Holy Trinity Parish who has performed recognizable community service - Patrick J. Lapadula ’14.

louis lannotti, son of Lou and Lisa, of North Haven signed a Siena Baseball Letter of Intent. Siena College is an NCAA Division 1 school. Louis is one of 11 to make an early commitment to Siena. The “Saints” head coach Tony Rosssi said,”We are extremely excited to have this group of young men in our program. It’s a very talented class, each one of them has a chance to have an impact athletic career at Siena, and they will be a positive part of the Siena community. Lou is a welcome addition to the program,” Rossi said. “He is sound defensively, and should add depth to the catching department. With added strength, he should be in the mix to compete for playing time in a short amount of time.”

Thomas lanzoni of Wallingford was offered a National Letter of Intent (NLI) by Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. Merrimack is an NCAA Division II athletics school. Tom will play under the “Warriors” new Head Coach Jim Martin who comes to Merrimack from Southern Connecticut State University. Louis has played baseball at Xavier since he was a freshman. As a junior he played varsity, and his biggest highlight was making it to the State Championship game last year. This year, as a senior, he hopes to be a leader on the team and help make it back to the State championship to win it. Louis says he has been privileged to play for, and be coached by, Coaches Magner, Fredericks, Cerreta, Jaskot and Kronenberger.

Louis is a member of the National Honor Society and while at Siena College he will pursue a career in business.

S enior Matt Kycia of West Hartford, CT signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division I Men’s Lacrosse at Quinnipiac University after graduation from Xavier in 2011

during the early signing period in November. Quinnipiac is an NCAA Division 1 school and member of the Northeast Conference.

For the past three seasons Kycia, a varsity attackman for the Falcons, has tallied 128 career points highlighted by 79 points (39 goals and 40 assists) leading the team in his Junior year. To play attack lacrosse positions a player must be quick and agile, with great stick skills and the ability to score. In 2010 he garnered SCC All Conference honors, Xavier’s Coaches Award, New Haven Register All- Area Team and Middletown Press All-Area Player honors. He was also selected to the Connecticut Super Junior All Star Team at Yale University and the Top 205 Rising Senior All Star Team at The University of Maryland this past summer. X avier High School held its “Grandparents’ Day” for freshmen on December 7. Approximately 160 freshmen Grandparents gathered in St. Joseph Hall where they were greeted by

members of the Office of Advancement and student volunteers. National Honor Society members acted as tour guides as each group of about 12 as they arrived.

Grandparents were escorted on a tour of the school and Fine Arts display. They were then brought to reserved seating in the Arthur M. Koh’s Gymnasium for a miniature Christmas Concert by the Xavier concert band, jazz ensemble and chorus. The musicians were led by Director of Music Christopher Dresko and Assistant Director Erik Elligers.

The day culminated in a hospitality tea when grandsons joined their grandparents in the St. Joseph Dining Hall. Director of Advancement Michael Tommasi (Xavier class of 1967) introduced Headmaster Br. Brian Davis, C.F.X. who then shared his thoughts on the many things facing their freshmen grandsons as they have entered Xavier High School. He thanked the grandparents for all the support that they have provided to their grandsons over the years. Brother Brian also shared his hopes for the students as they continue their education at Xavier.

National Honor Society member, senior Nick Chapman wrote and presented the closing prayer. “Lord, we thank You for allowing us to spend time with our beloved grandparents today. You taught the importance of love for one another, and we therefore thank You for allowing us to celebrate our love for each other on such

The afternoon concert was a precursor to an evening of Fine Arts at Xavier. The Music Department presented an evening filled with Christmas music to another large and appreciative audience. Fine Arts Department Chair and Visual Arts Instructor Ms. Jayne Vitale thanked everyone for being there and supporting the talents and achievements of the students. n

T hrough the efforts of many alumni, Thanksgiving Weekend 2010 turned into Xavier Alumni Weekend. On Thanksgiving day the class of 1975 kicked off the activities with a tailgating class reunion before the Xavier

vs. Middletown High football game at Wesleyan. The food was plentiful and all enjoyed swapping stories before the Falcon’s 27–0 victory at Andrus Field.

On Friday two more alumni events, the Second Annual Alumni Hockey Game and the class of 2000’s Ten year Reunion for took place.

A solid group of hockey players and fans showed up at Wesleyan’s Freeman Athletic Center for some spirited competition. In honor of “coach” Fr. Greg Galvin, who helped create a lot of excitement for the sport while chaplain and teacher at Xavier, organizers have dubbed the event the Father Greg Galvin Xavier Alumni Hockey Game. For the second year Fr. Greg’s team prevailed on the ice. We look forward to see if Father can make it three in a row next year.

Friday evening the class of 2000 held their first official reunion since graduation. The new function room at Nikita’s on Main Street in Middletown was the location and they were joined by a number of Xavier’s faculty and staff who dropped in to say hello. The evening was enjoyed by all.

The weekend’s final organized event was an Alumni Soccer Game played Saturday on Xavier’s Ryken Field. This is the first time in several years that our former soccer players had the opportunity to take on the Xavier varsity hockey team and renew some friendships. The picture below is only a sampling of the alums that turned out for the game. “They kept streaming in as the game was about to begin. It was a great turnout” said Joe lane ’95, Xavier’s Assistant director of Advancement. We hope this game is the beginning of another Xavier Alumni tradition. n

X avier alumnus Geoff Wilson ’76 finished in first place in the Male 50–54 division of the Manchester Road Race on Thanksgiving with a time of

28.19. There were 817 entrants in that age group. Overall, Geoff finished 193rd out of the 13,403 runners who registered a finishing time.

In September, Geoff finished first among the alumni who participated in the Annual Xavier Alumni Cross Country Meet.

Geoff coaches Cross Country and Track at Souhegan High School. located in the quiet village of Amherst NH, Souhegan High School serves the students of the towns of Amherst and Mont vernon, New Hampshire.

Brother James Kelly began his teaching career at Saint John’s High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and came to Xavier in 1974. From 1982

until 1991 he was the principal. He served as Director of Development for the Xaverian Brothers before he became the President of Saint Xavier High School, in Louisville, Kentucky, in June of 1993. He is now the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Maryland, the second oldest Xaverian Brothers school in the nation, founded in 1876.

it’s a Wonderful life

T he Town of Bedford Falls was brought to the Mercy High School stage on the evenings of december 1st and 3rd.

“It’s a Wonderful life” has become a holiday classic and was this year’s choice of the Mercy/Xavier drama Club as its Fall Production. The dozens of cast and crew members worked hard to prepare their interpretation of the play. The photos here were taken during a dress rehearsal.

George Bailey (Joe Gayeski `11), under the watchful eye of his guardian angel Clarence Odbody (Megan Rayder), struggles through the challenges of his life; in large part dealing with his nemesis Mr. Potter (Bryan Wills `11). He is supported by characters that have become so well known: his wife Mary (Kendra Oats) and their children, Uncle Billy (Brendan Sullivan `12) and Aunt Tilly (lauren Cunningham), his life-long pals Bert (Tyler Cahill `11) and Ernie (Andrew Faria `11), and all the residents of Bedford Falls. n

Senior Bryan Wills has been selected as a 2010-2011 Ensign Darling

Vocal Fellow. In a letter to Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X., Brenda D. Lopez, Senior Manager, Educational Programs and Program Director for EDVF said, “The Ensign Darling Vocal Fellowship is a full scholarship vocal training program for a select number of very talented and highly motivated high school aged singers interested in classical and theatrical music. The Fellowship was founded in 2002, by the Education Department of The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and the late Robert E. Darling, Jr., with the intention to further the education and careers of young, serious singers through private voice lessons, vocal coaching, tutoring in musical skills, master classes and performance opportunities. This past May, 27 students applied, and three were selected. Bryan joins five other Fellows in the upcoming class of the Fellowship. Over the past eight years of the program, we have selected only 31 students to be Fellows.”

Bryan, who resides in East Lyme, is a senior and member of Xavier’s Chorus and just completed the five-day Xavier Leadership Institute. The Xavier Music Department has grown significantly in the past decade and this year will educate over 140 students in Band, Jazz Ensemble and Chorus. In his junior year, Bryan was recognized on the Principal’s List for his academic achievements and in the first term of his senior year has qualified for High Honors. Fellowship responsibilities and opportunities. “The students awarded the Fellowship are invited to join a rigorous musical experience that will expand their vocal skills, encourage personal growth and character development. Fellows must commit to weekly private vocal lessons, and sessions of tutoring in musical skills throughout the duration of the program, which is September 2010 through June 2011. Monthly master classes are held at The Bushnell led by the Fellowship Artistic Director and distinguished guest artists with different specialties. The master classes provide an opportunity for the Fellows to perform works from their repertoire and benefit from the feedback and insight of the accomplished guests. The Fellows are also invited to attend workshops and select performances at The Bushnell and other venues in Connecticut throughout the year. The culmination of the Fellowship is the spring concert held at The Bushnell in the Belding Theater.” n

Students installed as Extraordinary Ministers of the EucharistE ight seniors were installed as Extraordinary Ministers of the

Eucharist at the Feast of All Saints Liturgy on November 1st. Michael Breault from Ivoryton, Colin D’Amelio from East Haddam, Alex Kobak from Guilford, Luke McCarthy from Guilford, Zachary Newton from Middletown, Daniel Quartararo Cheshire, Jake Randazzo from Durham, and Mark Scalzo from Wethersfield were called before the assembly of the entire school and commissioned by Father Greg Galvin, Norwich diocesan vocation director, who presided at the liturgy. Several of the students’ family members were also in attendance.

The students will have the responsibility of distributing communion during school liturgies. All are active in Xavier’s campus ministry program. n

H eadmaster Brother Brian davis, C.F.X. announced that seven seniors and one former student have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: Michael

Breault ’11 from Ivoryton, Patrick lenehan ’11 from Cheshire, Brendan lewis ’11 from Hamden, devin McManus ’11 from Old Saybrook, John Neal ’11 from Haddam, Mark Scalzo ’11 from Wethersfield, Ronald Weir ’11 from Cobalt, and former student louis Zanette ’11 from Middletown.

A letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will

not continue in the 2011 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Recognition of high achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented Students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.” n

in recognition of the outstanding degree to which

the life of each recipient reflects fidelity to the mission

and spirit of the Xavier High School Community.

inducted into the Xavier Hall of Honors.

Each year Habitat selects a handful of high school students to commit to fulfilling a 70-hour volunteer requirement. S teve Malone, NSCAA High School Scholar All-America National Chair, wrote to Mike, “On behalf of the National

Soccer Coaches Association of America, I am pleased to inform you of your selection to the 2010 NSCAA High School Scholar All-America Soccer Team. Congratulations on this prestigious achievement.”

Mike will be recognized for this honor, along with fellow All-Americas from the youth, high school and college ranks, to be honored during the NSCCA All-America Luncheon in Baltimore, MD on January 15, 2011. He and his parents, Bob and Maureen, are planning to attend the luncheon to receive the award.

In his senior season as Xavier’s goalkeeper Mike helped Xavier to a strong season and into the second round of the SCC Tournament. He has earned High Honors in the first marking period this year. Mike has verbally committed to attend and play soccer at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, a Division 1 school that participates in the Patriot League. We look forward to the official signing.

In his junior year, Mike was named as Xavier’s Most Valuable Player at our Fall Sports Banquet and earned a spot on the All-Quinnipiac Division team. Academically he achieved the highest level being name to the Headmaster’s List for the year. n

Thompson ’11 Boys’ Scholar All-AmericaSenior Michael Thompson from Cromwell has been named “Boys Scholar All-America” in recognition of his achievements on the soccer field and classroom.

A t the beginning of this school year, the Xavier Spiritual life Council discussed the possibility of ending each school day

with prayer at the conclusion of announcements, following Principal Brendan donohue’s example on the last day of each week. The idea was brought to a group of approximately 20 senior leaders for feedback and their response to the idea was overwhelmingly positive. One of the ideas proposed by the seniors was that we write an official Xavier High School prayer that could be used each day, establishing a new tradition for our school.

At the Memorial of St. Francis Xavier, this new tradition was begun. Students, faculty and staff received prayer cards with the new school prayer and Principal donohue led us all in praying it together for the first time. Mr. donohue thanked all the students who were involved and for the ideas they submitted. In particular, he offered special thanks to seniors Chris danko and Francis Rowland for their significant contributions in writing the prayer. n

Xavier Receives $10,000 GrantBishop of Norwich, the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote presents a check from the Catholic Foundation

H eadmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. was presented a check for $10,000 from the Catholic Foundation by the Bishop of Norwich, the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote. The

grant was one of several distributed by Bishop Cote at the 2010 Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Norwich Breakfast, which was held at the Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich in August.

Mr. Thomas P. O’Brien, Executive Director of the Diocesan Development Office pointed out that the Catholic Foundation was able to distribute $148,593 in grants to 31 deserving organizations, primarily educational institutions. He also noted that request for more than $670,000 had been received for consideration. Another $72,974 was disbursed through sub-accounts of The Catholic Foundation (Endowments, Scholarships, Trusts, and Restricted Funds).

Brother Brian noted that, “Xavier’s Annual Fund Drive (AFD) is the primary way in which our school raises revenues to be used for financial aid, endowed scholarships, and the enhancement of academic, athletic, spiritual, and extra curricular programs. For each student who attends Xavier, there is approximately a $1,400 gap between tuition and the actual cost of his education. That means with approximately 860 students, we need $1.2 million to

cover the gap; so every donation is important. This grant from the Catholic Foundation will certainly be put to good use. Requests for assistance have been overwhelming during these challenging times. Support from all sources is critical, now more than ever.”

D uring our celebration of St. Francis Xavier’s feast day six juniors, selected to represent Xavier High School in the annual Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS) Jr.

The seniors who were last year’s XBSS Student Leaders were called forward to extend the Blessing and Hand of Fellowship. The seniors placed their right hands on the shoulders of the junior being commissioned while Religion Department Chair and Ryken Service Society moderator Mr. James Tyrol read from the Fundamental Principles of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier.

“You were created by the God of love in God’s image and according to God’s likeness, to be a unique expression of that love. It is through you that God desires to manifest love to the peoples of the world in these times, and to offer them the freedom of the children of God.”

The juniors then committed themselves to the following statements by saying “I will.”

As a closing prayer, Mr Tyrol read: “Now may you go forth like Theodore James Ryken and St. Francis Xavier into the world in peace, being of good courage, holding fast to that which is true, rendering to no one evil for evil, supporting the weak, helping the afflicted, honoring all persons, loving and serving the Lord.”

The XBSS Junior Retreat calls together the 13 schools in our network and during this 5 day retreat students get to know one another, work together, share differing ideas, and work on leadership skills which promote the common good in each of their schools.

Throughout this retreat a great emphasis is placed on the life and mission of Theodore James Ryken along with charism and values which unite us as a Xaverian family. n

I recycle. do You?

X avier’s Stewards of Creation Club proudly declared “I Recycle. do you?” in recognition of America Recycles day (ARd) on Monday

November 15th. The Stewards of Creation is a new extra-curricular activity for students initiated this year.

“I Recycle” was the theme of the 2010 America Recycles day. Millions of Americans have pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and at work over the 13-year history of ARd, a nationally-recognized initiative which is organized by Keep America Beautiful and dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home, at work, and on the go.

The Stewards of Creation moderator, Mrs. Andrea Hoisl, said “ARd fits perfectly with the objectives of our club. This club meets after school once a week focusing on recycling and environmental issues as they immediately affect our community. The club is trying to raise awareness that we are all called to care for creation as it was gifted to us by God.”

The Stewards of Creation asked everyone to participate: wear green (shirt, tie or socks); clean out lockers and backpacks and recycle old paper; bring lunch in a paper bag instead of a plastic one; bring a cup, mug or thermos from home; walk or carpool to school; turn in old batteries, cell phones or ink cartridges to the Campus Ministry Office.

“We were pleased to have everyone in the Xavier Community participate in some way” said founding member freshman Nick Nagorski. Senior Brian vanacore added “Our unofficial club motto is if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.”

“America Recycles day is designed to educate, motivate and inspire individuals to recycle more while encouraging their friends and families to do the same,” said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Matt McKenna. n

T hirty-six students at Xavier High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. At Xavier, one student qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning grades of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and an average grade of 4 or

higher on eight or more of these exams. Andrew Yandow ’10 from South Glastonbury (pictured), Valedictorian for the Class of 2010, recorded an average score of 4.75.

Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Donohue announced updates to Xavier High School’s participation in the University of Connecticut’s Early College Experience Program. Mr. Donohue said “I am thrilled that Xavier High School has expanded its participation in UConn’s Early College Experience program. It is a great opportunity for our students.” Xavier now has over 120 students enrolled in the program and the UCONN credits earned are transferable to many other colleges and universities.

Xaverian Idol gave the seniors a light moment and chance to perform.

Almost 90 Xavier Seniors joined a team of Faculty and Staff members for the annual XAVIER CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (XLI) at Holy Family Retreat Center in West Hartford, Connecticut.

The seniors volunteered to participate in this program which is geared towards helping the students to discover and to appreciate their leadership potential. This Institute, known as XLI, has become a hallmark of a Xavier education. It has grown over the years from a program designed for twenty to thirty seniors to a program that regularly include almost half the senior class. Mrs. Andrea Hoisl, Xavier’s Director of Campus Ministry, says “It is heartening to know that a program such as XLI still attracts such a large percentage of the senior class to voluntarily attend a workshop/retreat during a week of their summer vacation.”

XLI participants received first-hand experience in a variety of leadership opportunities. Additionally, they have a chance to reflect upon and to utilize leadership theory and skills. The seniors form committees that arrange for the practical running of the Institute, including the athletic activities for the week, the care of the Holy Family facility for the week, and the celebration of the Eucharist and Morning and Evening Prayer. A committee also works on a webpage which chronicles the five days spent at Holy Family. They also create giant banners that hang in the school gym welcoming the class of 2014.

During the upcoming school year, the seniors who have participated in XLI will take leadership positions in the many extracurricular activities at Xavier; such as the Freshman Orientation Program, the Big Falcon/Little Falcon Program, as well as the Freshman Retreat Days and the Sophomore Retreat Weekends held throughout the

school year. In addition, these seniors will participate in the Senior Service Program, a volunteer program serving various social service agencies and schools throughout Middlesex, Hartford, and New Haven Counties.

Mrs. Hoisl says “I believe that this program plays a key role in setting a positive attitude for the upcoming school year. It also helps to bring together the seniors and the faculty in an enthusiastic and hard-working partnership that carries throughout the school year. Seniors set the tone for a school and the underclassmen look to them for leadership and direction. XLI equips the seniors with the necessary skills to assist in school activities, community projects, and peer-counseling throughout the year. And at the end of five days, both faculty and students look ahead with hope to a year filled with promise.” n

I n this year of a continuing difficult economy, we are pleased to announce that our student body rallied once again to make the

“Students Helping Students” Ad drive Campaign a rousing success. With participation by over 95% of our student body, we have brought in over $125,000 in receipts.

Headmaster Brother Brian davis, C.F.X. stressed the importance of the drive. “This is the one activity of the year in which we ask students to raise funds for your school, and this drive is especially important since the proceeds go to help students in need of financial aid to be able to attend Xavier.”

The Student Activities Council (SAC) is the sponsoring organization for the Ad drive in coordination with the Office of Advancement. SAC moderator Mr. Andrew Mule congratulated the students for the hard work.

again this year with $4,365. JM has led the school each year. His four year total is just under $17,000 ($16,967). His secret to success – “personally visiting and asking each contributor; going back personally when necessary; and sending every contributor a thank you note for their generous participation.” John Michael also gave credit to his Aunt Anne for providing him transportation in the years before he had his driver’s license.

“Students Helping Students” Tops $125,000

Top seller Senior John Michael Tommasi has led the ad drive all four years, bringing in almost $17,000. This year his total was $4,365.

J eff Bagwell, a 1986 Xavier graduate and a .297 hitter with 449 home runs over 15 seasons with the Houston Astros, becomes eligible for

the Hall of Fame in 2011. This summer the Houston Astros named their

former first baseman Jeff Bagwell as the team’s new hitting coach. Jeff had served as a Special Assistant to the Astros General Manager since his retirement in 2006. He began his duties as hitting coach after the All-Star Break.

In October Jeff turned down an offer to return as a member of the coaching staff. “This was a very difficult decision,” Bagwell said in a news release. “I enjoyed my time as hitting coach a great deal. The players were great and I can’t think of a better coaching staff to work with. At this point in time, I’m unable to commit to putting in the time that is necessary to be effective in that role,” he said. “But, I do look forward to continuing to work with the Astros.”

General Manager Ed Wade said Bagwell would stay on with the Astros in a similar role to the special assistant to the GM position he took after retiring in 2006. Previously, as part of his role as a Special Assistant, Bagwell has worked with minor league and Major league hitters in Spring Training and has visited several minor league clubs during the regular season to provide additional instruction. Bagwell has also assisted the baseball operations staff with player evaluations and minor league player development programs.

At Xavier, Jeff Bagwell paced the seniors by hitting .390, had a 6-4 pitching record, and drove in 18 runs. He was named the ACC pitcher and player of the year and was chosen for the All-State team. displaying his versatility, Jeff set Xavier soccer marks with 58 career goals, 24 career assists and 36 goals in one season. n

O n Xavier’s 2005 State Championship football team, Shea dwyer earned the “Champion of the year Award” while playing a pivotal role in several games.

From the story on the Wesleyan University website, “Shea dwyer ’10 rushed 27 times for 164 yards to become the single-season rushing leader at Wesleyan… dwyer, who entered the game averaging 170.2 yards a game to lead all NCAA runners (all divisions) coming into the contest, pushed his seasonal rushing figure to 159 carries for 1,015 yards, an average of 6.4 per rush.”

I n a recent meeting of the Executive Committee of our Xavier Alumni Association, I had the honor of being

elected President of our Xavier Alumni Association. In my 28 years as a volunteer for the Xavier Alumni Association and Xavier High School, I have had the privilege of serving many different roles for Xavier. Leadership of our alumni association is by far one of the more important positions I have held recently – I look forward to the challenge and ask for a few minutes of your time to read this letter.

Our Alumni Association has had a proud tradition of supporting Xavier. Our primary mission has been in raising funds through alumni donations to provide financial aid for needy students. Many of you were the beneficiaries of alumni assistance. We are continuing to support this mission as we move forward. This is where we need your help.

benefit in Honor of Jes egan ’921992 Xavier Alumni Matt Dunn,

Matt Fragola, and Wally Stojak are among a group who have arranged for a Benefit in honor of friend and classmate Jes Egan, his children, fiancée and family. Xavier has donated the use of the dining room in St. Joseph Hall for the January 15th event. Plans are for dinner, music, cash bar, raffle and auction to raise needed funds.

Jes is battling an inoperable brain tumor (diagnosed in September) and the cost has prompted this show of support. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at Xavier’s Office of Advancement and from committee members. For donations or more information visit forjes.com.

A s of Thanksgiving, the 2010–2011 Annual Fund Drive competition is off to a fast start. The idea of a little competition among the alumni classes

has been well received as we work to raise needed funds to support the future alumni of Xavier High School. Thanks to all who suggested this approach to boosting participation. Our younger Alums have gotten off the starting block quickly. But the older Alums are still setting the pace when it comes to numbers in the race.

dorothy marie (Sheld) albrecht, 87, passed away peacefully at Middlesex Hospital on Oct. 22. She was the grandmother of Michael Albrecht ’01and Anthony Albrecht ’04.

lawrence louis albrecht, 60, of Middletown entered into eternal peace after a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, on Sept. 17, 2010, at Middlesex Hospice and Palliative Care Hospital. He was the father of Michael Albrecht ’01and Anthony Albrecht ’04.

Walter George albrecht, 91, died suddenly at his home in Killingworth on Nov. 7. He was the grandfather of Michael Albrecht ’01and Anthony Albrecht ’04.

Peggy a. Carey, 55, of East Haddam, died August 27, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital. She was the mother of Nathan Carey ’07.

Walter J. “Skip” Cavanaugh, 71, of Middletown, died September 19, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital. He was the father of James Cavanaugh ’77.

michael R. Conroy ’67, age 60, of Higganum, passed away peacefully, on december 9, 2009 with his family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mike was the brother of Joseph Conroy ’67, and daniel Conroy ’70.

Robert J. Curtin, 80, of Palmer, MA (formerly from Portland, CT, and Foxfire in Naples, Fl), passed away

July 2, 2010. He was the father of William J. Curtin ’79.

frank J. damiata, 82, died October 24, 2010 at Chestelm Heath Care Center, Moodus. He was the father of Frank Michael damiata ’70.

david James donzello ’79, age 50, of Guilford passed away suddenly from injuries due to a tragic motorcycle accident on September 20, 2010. dave’s biggest joys in life were his daughters, Katrina, 19, and Bobbi-Ann, 12, donzello. david was self-employed and will always be remembered as a hard and dedicated worker.

Claire (Brochu) edwards, 91, of Middletown, died at her home on July 12, 2010. She was the mother of Phillip Edwards ’67 and Joseph Edwards ’70.

francesca “fran” Katherine elligers, 59, of Windsor, mother of music teacher Erik Elligers, passed away peace-fully on december 13, 2010, surrounded by her family at her home.

Salvatore e. faraci, 85, of Hilton Head, SC, died peacefully at yale New Haven Hospital on July 20, 2010. He was the grandfather of Peter d. Booth ’12.

michael drew forline ’73, age 55, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of durham, CT, passed away May 12, 2010, in Cape Coral, after a long, brave struggle with cancer. After graduating from Xavier, drew received a BA degree in business administration from Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla. He was a highly respected residential painter in the Connecticut shoreline region before moving to Florida. drew enjoyed art and spending time on the golf course, mentoring high school golfers and playing with his buddies. Everyone loved his kindness and easygoing demeanor. He was the brother of J.Todd Forlini ’74.

michael T. forline, 88, of Cape Coral, Fl, formerly of durham, Conn., passed away April 6, 2010, in Cape Coral. He was the father of drew ’73 (see above) and Todd ’74.

andrew a. Giannotti, Jr., 77, passed away on September 8, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the grandfather of Andrew Giannotti ’12.

William Tryon Hancock, Sr., 59, of Middletown, passed away on September 12, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital after a short illness. He was the father of Aaron W. Hancock ’95 and W. Tryon Hancock, Jr. ’01.

Rosemarie C. Hubbard, 84, of Middletown, and of Old Saybrook, mother of Wayne Hubbard ’69 died on July 23, 2010 at the Middlesex Hospital surrounded by her family.

erika yvonne Jolie, age 18, beloved daughter of Thomas Jolie ’78, died on October 9, 2010 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was also the niece of Jeff Jolie ’72 and cousin of Chris Jolie ’02.

Benjamin ian Julier ’87, age 41, died peacefully at home in West Tisbury on the island of Martha’s vineyard, MA November 4 with family by his side following a lengthy illness. After graduating from Xavier, Ian later graduated cum laude, with a degree in English, from UMass in Amherst in 1998.

While at Xavier, he was a member of the Outdoor Track team, and worked on the literary Magazine and Kestrel. Throughout his life, Ian loved to write stories and poems but his greatest interest was in music, where he continued to write beautiful lyrics for his own music compositions.

Eventually, he decided to go on to law school and graduated cum laude from Cornell law School in 2001 having been on Cornell law Review and won C.A.l.I. Excellence for the Future Awards in both international protection of intellectual property and in family law.

After a year working as a law clerk for Justice Richard Palmer on the Connecticut Supreme Court, he was sworn into the MA Bar, moved to the island and practiced law for two years before moving to San Francisco, where he took and passed the CA Bar.

William Tolbert Kieffer, iii, died August 2, 2010. His brother dr. Peter Kieffer told us “It is with deep sadness in my heart that I must pass on to you that my brother and Xavier High School tennis coach in 2006, died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 52. He had very fond memories of his coaching opportunity at Xavier before he moved to St. louis the next year. He truly cared for his Xavier athletes who should know of his untimely death.”

mildred “mim” mae Coy labbadia, 81, of Portland, passed away peacefully on June 27, surrounded by her family. She was the mother of dr. lewis R. labbadia ’71.

Selina (Pat) manemeit, passed away peacefully at home on September 18, 2010 after a courageous battle against cancer. Pat was the mother of Carl Manemeit ’78, Glen Manemeit ’79, david Manemeit ’81, Norman Manemeit ’84, and grandmother of Christopher Manemeit ’02.

ann Cashman marino, 85, of Middletown, died peacefully Nov. 5, 2010. She was the mother of Charles Marino ’72 and William Marino ’75. She was also the grandmother of Theodore Bysiewicz ’98.

louis “Pop” Carl marino, 89, of Middletown, passed away on October 8, 2010, at Middlesex Hospital. He was the father of Salvatore Marino ’67, Richard Marino ’70, and Robert Marino ’74.

Howard a. mcauliffe, 77, died July 7, 2010 after a long illness. Howard was the father-in-law of Marc Sowa 81; and grandfather of Kristopher Sowa ’07, Ryan Sowa ’13 and Nicholas Sowa ’14.

edward l. (Reds) mcmillan Jr., 74, died June 18, at Middlesex Hospital after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. Reds was the father of Edward l. McMillan III ’80.

Richard morse, 46, of Portland died June 5, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. He was the father of Nicholas’09, Joshua ‘10 and Anthony ‘13. He was also the brother-in-law of John Masselli ’83 and Michael Masselli ’86.

marie e. (Sheehan) mularski, 80, of Haddam, died November 24, at her home surrounded by her family. She was the mother of desmond Mularski ’71, Christian Mularski ’74, and Brian Mularski ’78. She was also the grandmother of Matthew Mularski ’97, Jeremy Mularski ’00, Brian Mularski ’03, leon Mularski ’04, James Mularski ’05, Nate Mularski ’06, and Josh Mularski ’10.

mark Stephen mushinsky ’71, age 56, of Brooklyn, CT., died November 26, 2009 at UMass Medical Center, Worcester. A kind soul and a gifted artist, Mark was graduated from Assumption College and studied art at the University of California at Berkeley. He managed the print shop at Assumption for close to 20 years.

Connie Pattavina, 72, mother of louis “ Rick” Pattavina ’83 September 1, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital following a long courageous battle with cancer.

Robert “Bob” Patterson of Madison died on April 22, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. He was the father of Brendan Patterson ’77 and liam Patterson ’83.

Blanche Gauthier Peterson, 92, of Hendersonville, TN formerly of Middletown, Connecticut died peacefully on december 11, 2009. She was the mother of david Peterson ’67.

We recently were informed of the passing of Peter Joseph Platek ’81. Pete passed away at age 44 on July 11, 2008 in Grand Junction, CO. He was the brother of Garrett Platek ’74. After graduating from the University of Connecticut, in 1985 with a Bachelors degree in liberal Arts, Pete’s love of the mountains and outdoors brought him to Aspen, CO. He began his career as a chef and quickly found his niche as both chef and musician.

William “Bill” Pomfret, 93, of Middletown, a.k.a. “Mr. Baseball” locally, died July 1, 2010, at Middlesex Hospital. Bill was the step-father of Robert Briggs ’78; grandfather of Michael Pomfret ’98, Michael Briggs ’02, Ryan lawson ’02 and daniel lawson ’05.

James S. Powers, Jr., 85, of Middletown, passed June 14, 2010 at Wadsworth Glen Health Care Center. He was the father of dr. James Powers III ’69 and John Powers ’71.

albert Thomas Roberge, age 85, of Uncasville, passed away at lawrence and Memorial Hospital on September 7, 2010. He was the grandfather of Mark Fusco ’10 and Christopher Fusco ’13.

albina lorraine (Badiali) Russo, 79, of Middletown, died quietly on dec. 8, 2010 after a brief illness. She was the mother of Guy P. Russo ’73, Rex E. Russo ’74, Eugene E. Russo ’77 and the grandmother of Gabriel Russo ’99.

dipika “dipti” Santosh Sheth, 51, of Meriden, mother of Jit Sheth ’11, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2010 surrounded by her family at her home.

Richard J. Smith, Jr., 75, of Chester passed away on November 13, 2010, at the MidState Medical Center, Meriden. He was father of Board member Attorney Christopher Smith ’76 and Richard Smith III ’81, and grandfather of Chris Smith ’99, Brendan Smith ’02, and Patrick lapadula ’14.

nicholas J. Spellman, Jr., 84, died at Regency Health Care Center in Norwich on June 25, 2010. He was the grandfather of Charles Spellman ’13.

Walter J. Stojak, Jr. 67, father of Wally J. Stojak, III ’92, died May 27, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital. Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the City of Middletown Public Works department. He bartended throughout his life and most recently, he could be seen supervising his son Wally at The Hair of the dog.

Julia (marosz) Supranovich, 87, passed away on Nov. 6, 2010 at Meriden Center. She was the grandmother of Michael Oblon ’99.

Gary Thompson Sr., 50 of Higganum passed away June 20, 2010 at Middlesex Hospital. He was the brother, d.J. Thompson ’75 and uncle of donald J. Thompson ’13. Gary was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1978.

After completing his term as dean at Michigan State University, Charles Salmon ’73 is on a two-year assignment in Israel, where he is a Fellow in the Herzog Institute for Media, Politics and Society. He recently spent a month in villa Serbelloni, lake Como, Italy, as a Rockefeller Foundation Scholar in Residence.

1980sGuy Santostefano ’80 wrote “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of Brother Eddy. I’m a high school science teacher on long Island, and I mention Brother Eddy to my students every year. I tell them that I absolutely tortured Brother Eddy during math class, but he never lost faith in me, and eventually he became my favorite. My grades were horrible in 9th grade math, but I eventually aced calculus in college. He had the most powerful handgrip that you’ll ever feel, and when he squeezed my shoulders until I cried, I deserved every bit of it. I like to say ’it built character’. I’ll never forget him. He taught me much more than math. I strive to love my students as he loved us back in the 1970’s at Xavier.”

Tufts University President lawrence S. Bacow this spring recognized adam Carberry ’98 with the Presidential Award for Citizenship and Public Service. Adam has earned a Bachelors degree in Engineering from Alfred University, a Master of Science degree in Chemistry from Tufts University, and he just earned his doctorate in Engineering Education from Tufts University. Now he is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at Arizona State University.

2000smark Carberry ’00 is the Assistant Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Coach at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA. Mark earned a

Bachelors degree in Political Science and Economics from villanova University, a Masters degree in Political Science from Florida State University, and he just completed a Masters degree in Educational Studies from Tufts University.

We’ve heard from dr. matthew antonucci ’01. He tells us “I have completed a doctorate program in chiropractic medicine from life University in Atlanta, GA, a diplomate program in chiropractic neurology, 3 fellowship programs — functional neurology, vestibular rehabilitation and childhood developmental disorders- all of them through the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies and the American College of Functional Neurology. I was awarded 2010 Neurology learner of the year.” Regarding future plans, he says “I am opening up a private practice in Mount Pleasant, SC called “Neurologic Integrated Health, Inc”. My focus is on holistic treatment of neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders. lt. eric michel ’01 was married in April to lt. Shannon Scully. Eric is a graduate of Seton Hall University and the University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has a degree in osteopathic medicine and is an intern at the Naval Medical Center in virginia.

H. Brian dumeer ’02 is and Attorney at law and has joined the firm of Cloutier & Cassella in Old Saybrook, CT, a multi-service law firm, serving individual and business interests in New Haven, Middlesex, and New london Counties and in towns throughout the Connecticut River valley.

Paul famiglietti ’03 recently sent a note to Ms vitale (Fine Arts Chair). “you’ll be pleased to know I majored in Art History, first at Fairfield University and then, after transferring, at UClA. My focus was mainly in Pre-Columbian art and architecture, but I also took several courses in Islamic Art, Realism, Impressionism, Contemporary, Etruscan/Roman, etc. I stayed in lA for a couple years after graduation to work at Sony Pictures Entertainment, doing a bit of everything from film editing to drafting license agreements. The latter has led

me to pursue law School, to which I am applying now and will begin next fall. I intend to focus on Intellectual Property (specifically Art law) but am also eager to learn about all areas of the law.”

Benjamin J. Chase ’06 wrote an article earlier this year that was published in the magazine Christianity Today. Ben tells us “I graduated from Wheaton College (in

Wheaton, Illinois) december 2009. At Wheaton I majored in English (with a Concentration in Writing) and Minored in Bible/Theology. After graduating in december, I spent February through May working as the Editorial Intern at Crossway and Good News Publishers which is also in Wheaton, Illinois. Angelo Sosa ’93 is Back Scores a victory in first “all-stars” episode

As of this writing the latest culinary exploits of angelo Sosa ’93 are available for viewing

on Bravo Tv as they present Top Chef All-Stars. This summer Angelo earned a runner-up spot in the show’s seventh series finale in Singapore. On december 1st, Bravo premiered its “All-Star”

version of the program that features top contenders from the previous seasons who did not earn the Top Chef designation.

In the All-Stars opening episode from New york City, Angelo earned a win in the elimination round. The show airs on Wednesday evenings for those who would like to watch or record it. We’ll keep you posted about his progress on our website as the season continues.

We recently heard that michael Crowl ’06 graduated last year from UCONN as a Chemical Engineer. He got a job offer before his senior year at Westinghouse.

Patrick H mcGuire ’08 is a Sociology major at virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Patrick is also employed as a Security Guard with the virginia Tech Police department. He was elected 1st lieutenant in the virginia Tech Rescue Squad with responsibility for all vehicles and interdepartmental communications. Patrick joined the department in September 2008 and has advanced with increasing responsibilities.

B en was with 2/25 Charlie Co., from Plainville, CT

when he was deployed to Akashat, Iraq in 2009. He and his company worked to turn control over to the Iraqi police while stationed there last year. during his training, he was chosen to learn Arabic. While in Iraq, he was able to help communicate with the local people when necessary.

Ben graduated from Xavier High School in 2005.

At present he is continuing his college education in business studies but is due to deploy again in April 2011 to Afghanistan.

Freshmen Continue Xaverian LegacyAAt the conclusion of the Opening

of School Mass in September, the twenty-four freshmen whose fathers are alumni of Xavier came to the stage to take a photo with Brother Brian, Principal Donohue, and Brother James Boyle.
