Dear Members of the Xavier Community,

Last week I was being interviewed by our students who produce Falcon Talk, and a question

was “what do I think Xavier will look like fifty years from now?” My response was that since

fifty years from now I would be 117 years old it isn’t what I think it will look like that is

important. It is an important question for those who will be our alumni then and hopefully

will be Xavier supporters.

What I do know is what Xavier will look like two years from now. At the Gala celebrating

Xavier’s first fifty years we were able to announce the beginning of the public phase of our

Sustaining Excellence campaign. Having donations or commitments for over $3,000,000, we

are now moving forward to raising the next $5,500,000 of our campaign goal of $8,500,000.

On our website and further on in this publication you can read about and see some details of

our plans, including the improvements of our athletic facilities as well as the addition to our

building to house a much needed new music facility, a new art classroom and an additional

chemistry lab.

As we look to Xavier’s future we hope to continue to promote the best possible Catholic

Xaverian high school education possible, and we plan to have the best possible facilities we

can to serve the needs of our students. In the pages that follow I hope you will enjoy reading

about the students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Xavier who are examples of

dedication and accomplishment of whom we are very proud.

I and all of us here at Xavier are very grateful to all of you mentioned in our Annual Report

whose financial support is so vital to our success. Simply put, we can’t do it without you!

Please keep Xavier in your prayers as we keep you in ours.

Sincerely in Christ,

Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X.

avier 50tA N N I V E R SA R Y G A L A XA lmost 300 revelers arrived at Xavier on September 14th and enjoyed the full

evening of activities, awards, announcements, good food, beverages and

other reasons to celebrate Xavier’s 50th Anniversary.

The courtyard was a perfect place to gather as the guests arrived. The weather

cooperated with a bright sun and cool temperatures. For the first hour everyone mingled

and partook of the variety of beverages and hors d’oeuvres and were entertained by the

Xavier Jazz Ensemble. Many then entered the school by the entrance near the chapel and

walked through the first floor hall which was lined with pictures depicting scenes from the

past 50 years and student desks topped with yearbooks from 1967 to the present.

When they arrived at the Xavier gymnasium, guests entered into a room that had been

transformed into a banquet hall befitting the special occasion. On stage were two screens

flashing more pictures from the Xavier archives.

Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. welcomed the crowd, as did Bishop of Norwich

the Most Reverend Michael Cote and Middletown Mayor Daniel Drew who presented

Brother Brian with a copy of a proclamation declaring that Sunday September 15th was

Xavier High School Anniversary Day in the City.

After dinner, Brother Brian began the formal evening’s program introducing special

guests who had come for the occasion. Brother Edward Driscoll, C.F.X., General Superior

of the Xaverian Brothers, offered congratulatory remarks on behalf of the congregation.

Chairman of the Board of Directors Dr. Perry Sangalli, who is also president of St. Xavier

High School in Louisville, KY, had a special surprise planned. In his remarks, he announced

that coincidentally with the 50th Anniversary of Xavier Brother Brian is celebrating his

50th anniversary with the Xaverian Brothers. Headmaster’s assistant Mrs. Donna Jaskot

and Principal Brendan Donohue came to the stage to present Brother Brian with a gift

from the school’s faculty and staff.

Director of Advancement Matthew Strekel `99 thanked members of the Gala planning

committee for their hard work and then introduced a video of the six individuals who

were given the St. Francis Xavier Award this year and inducted into the Xavier Hall of

Honors (see story on page 4). Matt said “After 50 years, we thought it was time to

introduce a new award as the highest honor that Xavier can bestow on an individual,

The Xavier Lifetime Service Award. The first recipients of the Lifetime Service Award are

Brother J. Robert Houlihan, C.F.X. and Mr. Anthony Jaskot.” (See the inside back cover for

brief biographies of Brother Houlihan and Mr. Jaskot.)

Brother Brian had another special piece of news. Matt Jaskot `02, who is an

accomplished musician and writer and teaches at the College of the Holy Cross, has been

commissioned to write a piece of Music celebrating Xavier’s 50th Anniversary. That piece

will be played for the first time at Xavier’s Spring Concert early in 2014.

Following announcement of Xavier’s “Sustaining Excellence” campaign (see page 25),

The Xavier Jazz Ensemble and special guest piano soloist Pete LaMalfa `10 gave a final

performance demonstrating how far the music program has come at Xavier.

The evening closed with the recitation of the Xavier School Prayer by Principal

Donohue who mentioned the prayer is read every day as classes end at 2:26 pm. He

invited everyone to “say the prayer at that time if you are able and know that you are in

solidarity with the entire school community.” X

Honors

T here are few spaces at Xavier that have not been inhabited

by Mrs. Dora Braun in her role as volunteer extraordinaire.

Mrs. Braun is a dedicated member of the Xavier Home and

School Association who has spent countless hours decorating the

hallways of Xavier on a seasonal basis. Dora is also a key member

of the Home and School Auction Committee, making sure that every

detail, ribbon, and item is meticulously cared for and wrapped.

Dora was recognized in March 2013 with the Volunteer Recognition

Award by the Connecticut Association of Schools. She was the

first such honoree from the Xavier community. Her volunteer spirit

and endless energy is sincerely appreciated by all in the Xavier

community.

The following six individuals were honored with the

St. Francis Xavier Award and induction in to the Xavier Hall of Honors

at the 50th Anniversary Gala on September 14th.

M r. Tom Byrne is a member of the Xavier class of 1980

and proud Xavier parent, along with his wife Dawn, of

Garrett `09 and Riley `14. As owner of Connecticut

Rental Center in Middletown, Xavier can always rely upon Tom

for sponsorship, support, and essential equipment. Tom and his

company generously donate their time and materials for many

special events at Xavier. Tom is without a doubt one of Xavier’s

most indispensable yet unsung alumni volunteers. He has been a

member of the Saint Francis Xavier Society since 2006 and serves

on the Alumni Executive Committee. In June, Tom was honored by

Middletown Mayor Dan Drew with the Mayor’s Corporate Citizenship

Award.

M r. Foisie has left an indelible mark on Xavier

for generations to come. Having earned his

undergraduate degree from Worcester Polytechnic

Institute in 1956 and his master’s degree from Cornell University

in 1958, Mr. Foisie went on to a career in aerospace engineering;

became founder and president of Matik North America; and has

ventured into everything from telecommunications to real estate

investment. Mr. Foisie serves on the Board of Trustees at WPI and

in 1991 was recognized with the Alumni Award for Outstanding

Professional Achievement. Mr. Foisie cares deeply about people.

His philanthropic efforts focus on his employees, students, and

their families. At Xavier, Mr. Foisie has been an ardent supporter of

private, Catholic education. His grandson, Samuel `09, is a Xavier

man and without Mr. Foisie, Xavier would simply not be able to

offer the high quality education and physical plant that it does.

M r. Reginald Simmons is all that Xavier calls young

men to be. A heart bigger than anyone can fathom,

he consistently goes above and beyond the call of

duty to make sure that Xavier is in proper operating order. Reggie

is a member of the Xavier custodial and maintenance staff since

1996, a regular on the court during pickup basketball games over

the summer, and an integral part of the Faculty-Staff intramural

team. Without fail, Reggie can be counted upon to be there when

you need him. Set up, clean up, break down, Reggie is there. He

has been a mentor to countless Xavier students, Reggie watches

out for and protects each Xavier student like they are his own son.

Although his attitude may seem laid back, he keeps a vigilant eye

on Xavier’s physical plant making sure it is in top shape on a daily

basis. Without question, Reggie is one of the hardest working

members of our community. Reggie and his wife Cheryl are the

proud parents of George, Xavier alumnus Courtney `07 and Bianca

(Mercy `09 and playing basketball professionally in Puerto Rico).

Mr. Robert FoisieGP `09

M r. George V. Keithan, Jr. is a graduate of the class

of 1981. After completing his degree in electrical

engineering from the University of New Haven, he

founded and became President and CEO of Consulting Engineering

Services, George is a tireless advocate for energy efficient,

energy neutral, and LEED certified structures and dwellings. He is

considered one of the foremost experts in energy neutral building

practices in the northeast, and leads by example. After his father’s

passing in 2009, George and his wife Mary looked for a way to

honor the memory of his father and established two endowed

scholarship funds at Xavier. The first is in memory of his father and

benefits a student who is continuing their education at a college or

university in Connecticut in the field of engineering. The second

endowment, in honor of George and Mary, aids a Xavier student

in need of help with their tuition costs. George and Mary are the

parents of Adam `07 and George `11.

M rs. Tomasiello has been a guidance counselor at Xavier

since the 1999 school year. She is married a Xavier

alumnus, Jack Tomasiello `72. Joan and Jack are also

the proud parents of two Xavier men, Adam `09 and Peter `12.

Since coming to Xavier, Joan has embodied what it means to be

truly involved in and an advocate of Catholic education. In 2009,

she received the Ryken Award, which annually recognizes a Xavier

faculty or staff member who exemplifies the models of St. Francis

Xavier and Christian education. She has been described by her

peers as “one of those people who makes this place tick, who gives

this school a `soul.’” She serves as a moderator to the Senior class,

spends numerous hours with various service projects run by the

students, and is always one of the first to volunteer to help at the

school. X

8 Xavier Today

St. Francis Xavier, Pray for us! The prayer seemed to be answered

once again. Bright skies and seasonable temperatures brought out

a large crowd of 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys and their families to

our annual Open House. Families arrived before the 1 o’clock opening and

continued throughout the afternoon. They were greeted under a banner

that read “Welcome Class of 2018” referring to the 8th graders who are

planning to take the Entrance Exam on November 16th to determine their

eligibility and course placement as Xavier students in September 2014.

Once they had been greeted, small groups of families were assigned

a student tour guide who would walk them through the building. The

Jazz Band, String ensemble, concert band and chorus provided music

throughout the afternoon in the gymnasium indicating the growth of

Xavier’s music and fine arts offerings. St. Joseph’s Hall, the science labs,

the chapel and technology upgrades in classrooms were among the

scheduled stops on the tour of the campus.

All along the way, the

visitors met the faculty, staff,

administration, alumni, present

parents and student volunteers

who were on hand to answer

questions. Displays were set up

to highlight the many activities,

clubs, intramurals and sports

that are a part of Xavier’s

offerings.

Open House 2013One parent commented

on our Facebook Page

“Thank you for the

opportunity to visit

Xavier today my son was

truly impressed and is

seriously looking forward

to attending there next

year. Our guides were a

fine example of young

men. All the faculty were

very informative and welcoming to both the students and parents.”

In promoting the event this year, we also encouraged 6th and 7th

graders and their families to visit the school and have some of their

questions about a Xavier education answered.

At the conclusion of the tour, the families were invited for some light

refreshment in the St. Joseph dining hall. The reception was sponsored by

Xavier’s Home and School Association.

With a large number of early registrations for the November 16th

Entrance Exam and an ever increasing number of shadow days (days

when 8th graders can follow a current student during a class day and

see what a Xavier education is really like), the interest in Xavier seems as

strong as ever.

At the end of August the faculty and staff met at St. Clements

Castle in nearby Portland for a retreat as their first official

meeting of the new year. Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X.

welcomed everyone and opened the day with a prayer. Principal Mr.

Brendan Donohue introduced the new faculty members:

Physics — Ms. Kathleen DiSanto

Science — Mr. Jeffrey Ruvolo

Religion — Dr. Kevin Ryan

Math — Mr. Steven P. Smith

(For more information on each of the new faculty members, read the

article on page 33.)

The keynote speaker for the retreat was Sister Patricia McCarthy

(pictured above). Sister Patricia is a member of the Congregation

of Notre Dame. For twenty-five years she worked with the poor in

education, in particular with abused children. For seventeen years

she taught peace and nonviolence, giving lectures, courses, retreats

and missions to students, adult education classes, parishes, religious

communities, seminarians and deacons throughout the United States,

Canada, Ireland, North Ireland, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Australia,

Japan and Vietnam. Her book, “The Word of God—The Word of

Peace” won first place for spirituality by the Catholic Press Association

in 2003. In 2007 the Catholic Press Association awarded her second

place as columnist in a Catholic paper and magazine. Currently she is

Provincial for the United States province of her community.

Sister Patricia put the faculty and staff at ease with her down-to-

earth style of presenting information. She often poked fun at herself

in her personal experiences including family, student years, religious

and professional activities. the three themes that she wove into her

presentation were how each person should develop and foster a:

• SenseofSelf

• SenseofGod

• SenseofOther

Sister Patricia spoke of things like:

• therole(notimportance)ofgradesforastudent’sworkinschool

• nevertakingyourselftooseriously

• maintainingstructure,disciplineandconsistency

• importantwaystocommunicatewithstudents,peers,parents

and administration

• andmuchmore...

After Sister’s morning talk and before lunch, Rev. Father Michael

Phillippino, pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Middletown

and a former chaplain at Xavier, celebrated Mass assisted by Deacon

James Tanguay of our science department. X

12 Xavier High School — Annual Report 2012-2013

Director of Advancementa message from the

Dear Xavier Alumni, Parents, and Friends –

I have noticed a trend amongst many of my friends and colleagues, of all ages, over the

past year or so. Beginning the first day of November, these folks make it a point to take

the time in their day to be mindful of something that they are thankful for. Now some

write their responses and thoughts on Facebook for all to see. Some choose to write

it in a private journal to reflect upon later that day, week, or month. Others keep their

thoughts private, mindful simply of an “attitude of gratitude.”

For us, appreciation and thankfulness extends all year long. I am thankful every day for your support of

Xavier. In this annual report for 2013, you will find many who choose to support Xavier financially. You will

see that you supported Xavier with over $1.5 million in total gifts to the school, and our alumni participation

increased 4 points over last year. I am truly grateful for all that you do for Xavier and our young men here

each and every day. We simply could not do what we do without your financial assistance and spirited

volunteerism.

As included in this edition of Xavier Today, we recently went public with our “Sustaining Excellence”

campaign. We have raised $3.1 million to date on our way to $8.5 million. This campaign focuses on four

areas of growth as identified by the Board of Directors for Xavier: the Xavier Annual Fund, Academics and

Technology, the Arts, and Athletics. I want to emphasize that every name listed in the annual fund portion of

the report is already a donor to the campaign. Through your participation in the Xavier Annual Fund, with

even a gift of $25, you are choosing to support Xavier and the Sustaining Excellence campaign. THANK YOU!

We continue to reach out to many of you to talk about the campaign and how you and your family can

be involved. If you would like to be involved before we are in touch, please feel free to contact me at

860-347-6079. It would be a pleasure to let you know in a bit more detail what we are doing.

Thank you, once again, for your support of Xavier in all ways. Now let’s honor our past and build upon our

legacy for the next 50 years.

Xavier Annual Fund Giving (Continued)

At the 50th Anniversary Gala celebration at Xavier on September 14th, the

school made public its “Sustaining Excellence” capital campaign to improve

its athletic facilities, fine arts program and increase classroom space. Campaign

Chairpersons, Robert Guere and Brian Hetherington (both Xavier Class of 1981)

made the announcement and showed architects’ renderings of the planned work.

The $8.5 million comprehensive campaign began quietly on

July 1, 2012, said Director of Advancement Mr. Matthew Strekel

(Xavier Class of 1999) and has raised more than $3 million so

far. A ceremonial check for three million, twenty -nine thousand,

twenty-eight dollars was presented to Headmaster Brother Brian

representing the monies raised to date. The campaign committee

hopes to raise the remaining $5.5 million over the next four years

during the public phase. Technology improvements and growing

the school’s annual fund are also part of the campaign.

The athletic complex would feature a new turf football/

multipurpose field, a new track, a new baseball field and a new

athletic facility which would house coaches rooms, team rooms,

concession stands and ticket booths. However, for the foreseeable

future, Strekel said, varsity football home games are still planned to

be played at Palmer Field.

The fine arts building would provide needed space for the

school’s music program

which has been growing

steadily for a number of

years and currently serves

about 125 students. The

plan would create additional

classroom space within the

main building.

questions, please contact

Xavier High School — Annual Report 2012-2013 29

Dear friends,

As a teacher here at Xavier, it has been my pleasure each year to have at least one section of our present seniors in class. While each grade of our student body is unique in its own way, I always enjoy the time i spend with our seniors as their perspective is unique. They know that the end of their time as students in the building will soon be coming to a close and, with their collective experience as a class over the past three years behind them; their attitude tends to be on the positive side as they attempt to finish out their time together as students in an enjoyable way. We are now well into another school year and, take it from me; our present senior class seems to be intent on enjoying their last year as Xavier students!

A year spent with our seniors is, however, always bittersweet. While the time spent with them day to day can often bring me back to that same feeling that I had my senior year at Xavier, I carry with me the knowledge that every day brings us closer to having to say goodbye as they move on to the next step in their lives. still, many months remain ahead of us and the inevitable end of this school year won’t have to mean goodbye forever.

Since returning to Xavier as a teacher six years ago, I have come to realize that our school community is one that no alum must ever leave behind. Old friends and teachers have done much to help me connect the feeling of excitement I had my senior year with the feelings of accomplishment I have as a Xavier graduate.

In closing, I urge all members of our school community to remember that Xavier, through the act of giving, volunteering at events or even just stopping by for a friendly visit, is a place that you never have to leave completely. After all, there are still many months ahead this school year and plenty of opportunity for good times to be had by the senior in all of us.

Best wishes, James Royce `99

Sal NeSci `14 (pictured right with Senator Chris Murphy) was

honored this summer by U.S. Senator Chris Murphy at a community

meeting he held at The Elks Club. His father, also Sal, submitted this

photo and told us “I received a call by his (Senator Murphy’s) staff

requesting his presence at a community meeting where Sal would be

recognized for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. The reason I am bringing

this to your attention is that we found out when we showed up that Senator

Murphy chose a student from Middletown High School, Mercy and Xavier. Sal was the student

chosen to represent Xavier ... I believe by an alumni member of the Xavier community ... we

cannot go without saying that much of his maturity and development is due in large part to his

experience that lies in the brotherhood of Xavier.”

Congratulations again to Sal for this individual honor and for representing Xavier, all its Eagle

Scouts and students in such a positive way.

Nick iott `13 (pictured right) was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in April. He was a

scout in Troop 810 and is a member of Venture Crew 007, both of North Haven. Nick performed

his Eagle service project at the Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop. The Museum was expanding

its facilities and needed to create a new entrance area which also would serve to handle waste

material management. With the help of volunteers, Nick designed and built a new enclosure for

a dumpster, including elements to make it easier for Museum staff to manage waste materials.

He installed new landscaping including fencing, curbs and a gravel driveway to complete the

entry area.

Highlights of Nick’s scouting experience included sharing his time with his good friend,

Mark Kennedy `13 and brother Kevin Iott `16, both Xavier students, working with Mr. David

Applegate `98 at the waterfront at Camp Sequassen where he earned his Boy Scout Life Guard

certification, attending the 100th anniversary National Jamboree and most especially, participating

in a 112-mile backpacking trip through New Mexico at the Philmont Scout Ranch. X

Our annual Eagle Scout tribute will run in the Summer 2014 edition of Xavier Today. We welcome photos and details of our students reaching this scouting milestone. Please forward submissions to [email protected].

In addition to the AP Scholars

recognized at the Opening of

School Mass Awards (page 8),

Headmaster Brother Brian Davis

C.F.X and Principal Mr. Brendan

Donohue announced that Angus

Lamont `14 of Hamden has

been named as a National Merit

Semifinalist. “We are very proud

of his individual accomplishment”

said Mr. Donohue. Angus, who is

also President of the Latin Honor

Society at Xavier, is pictured at

right with Principal Donohue

and Brother Brian at the Honor

Societies Induction Ceremony.

Angus was formally recognized as

a Semifinalist before the entire school at the opening of school Mass on

September 9th along with the other 13 students and 35 graduates of the

class of 2013 who were recognized as AP Scholars.

Angus is among the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 58th

annual National Merit Scholarship Program and has an opportunity to

continue in the competition for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships

that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship®

award, Semi-finalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the

Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are

expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists

will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Brother and Principal Donohue also announced that nine seniors

have been named Commended Students in the 2014 National Merit

Scholarship Program. They are: Branden Bielot `14 (East Hampton),

Brenton Cantliffe `14 (Berlin),

Daniel Colavecchio `14

(Colchester), Jonah Cremin-Endes

`14 (Guilford), Ruban Hussain `14

(Higganum), John Kessler `14

(Killingworth), Regis O’Neill `14

(Middletown), James Rosborough

`14 (Durham), and Maxwell Staab

`14 (Middletown)

Each of these scholastically

talented seniors receives a Letter

of Commendation from the school

and National Merit Scholarship

Corporation (NMSC), which

conducts the program.

About 34,000 Commended

Students throughout the nation

are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although

they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships,

Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more

than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the

Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/

NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated

outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson

for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource;

recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools

play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of

educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will

help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they

continue their pursuit of academic success.” X

34 Xavier Today

Most adults could probably answer that question fairly easily. But

most current students in our schools, either weren’t born or may

have been too young to remember the tragic events that took place in

New York, Washington, D.C. and Shanksville, PA.

A large crowd gathered at the South Fire District Station on Saybrook

Road to mark the occasion with the dedication of a new memorial garden

that has been constructed around a piece of steel from the North Tower of

the World Trade Center that was destroyed that day 12 years ago.

Xavier was well represented at the event. Headmaster Brother Brian

Davis, C.F.X. gave the Invocation and Benedition, President of the Local

Firefighters Union James Mastroianni `90 offered welcoming remarks,

South Fire District Chief Robert Ross `80 introduced special guests and

Xavier senior Tom Vanacore `14 was in the audience honoring his uncle

Edward who died in the attacks that day. Many other attendees were

alumni, family members or had relationships with Xavier over the years.

We also saw that there was a brick laid in the walkway of the

memorial garden in honor of Peter Gelinas `86 (photo below), the only

alumnus of Xavier to have lost his life in the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Freshman Academic Dean Mr. David Sizemore `86, a classmate

of Peter’s asked us all to “Please keep Peter as well as the following

members of the Xavier family who lost their lives on September 11th:

Mr. J. Bruce Eagleson, father of Kyle `97 and Timothy `00; Mr. Richard

Keane, father of Patrick `95; and Mr. Edward Vanacore, uncle of Brian `11

and Thomas `14.” Many dignitaries were present and offered words to

rekindle remembrance of that fateful day. X

In June as Spring 2013 was coming to a close and it would be hard

to picture a more glorious day, temperatures climbing through the

upper 60s with a dry breeze cooling those who were engaged in

creating the Sandy Hook Memorial Garden at Xavier. The Stewards

of Creation had decided to construct this garden in honor of the 26

“angels” who lost their lives in the tragic events at the Sandy Hook

Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012.

Earlier plans to get the plants in were thwarted by torrential rains.

But finally, on this beautiful Wednesday, outgoing club president C.J.

Spellman `13 (Rocky Hill) joined moderator Mrs. Andrea Hoisl, Director

of Athletics Tony Jaskot `69 and Director of Grounds Mr. Michael

Schinas for the planting and sprucing up of the area. Mr. Schinas and

Br. John Sullivan, C.F.X. had done preliminary work on the garden.

With angels praying and a plaque that was added in September

when the student body returned for the new school year, the Stewards

of Creation are hoping that the garden will flourish and remain as a

living memorial for the 20 students and six adults who were killed. X

36 Xavier Today

“Mr. Mike” has retired. After 15

years of teaching

Math and Science at Xavier and following a career

in the New Haven Public School System and the

years spent working for the military, Mr. Ricciuti has

officially retired.

The faculty and staff of Xavier was able to

celebrate his retirement with him at the end of the

year picnic which followed closing meetings and a

prayer service. While all were enjoying the potluck

fare and grilled sandwiches, Principal Brendan

Donohue introduced Science Department Chair Mrs.

Linda Charpentier to share some thoughts about Mike Ricciuti. The

complete text of her comments are below. Mr. Donohue and Mrs.

Charpentier then presented him with a farewell gift on behalf of the

school.

We join in Mrs’ Charpentier’s closing words “Congratulations Mike!”

and thank you for all you’ve done for Xavier students and the school.

Several years ago, back when Mike taught solely in the math

department and I didn’t know him very well, I was attending a summer

workshop where I encountered a teacher who knew Mike from his days

in the New Haven public school system. When she learned that I was

from Xavier and that Mike still taught here, she asked me to be sure

to say hello to him for her. “I miss him so much,” she said. “What a

sweetheart he was to all of us … he is the most kindhearted person I

know!” [Pause] “Could she have meant some other Mike Ricciuti” I said

to myself? Surely she was not talking about the guy whom the boys

had nicknamed Darth Vader and who wore his “flame ‘em” tie on exam

days. Surely she was not talking about the guy who had terrorized

my own son when he took over Tom’s AP Calc class during Andrew’s

paternal leave of absence. No, surely she was mistaken – she had to

have been talking so fondly of somebody else!

Then Mike joined the science department. We began to find hoards

of freshmen gathered round him as he generously offered them his

This is the Mike Ricciuti we’ve come to love and respecttime both before and after school, even during lunch,

giving extra help on homework problems. And

honestly, these kids did not look panicked as much as

they looked genuinely motivated by the challenge of

learning physics. And many of them began to show

a little extra spring in their step as they came to the

realization that, by golly, they were getting it – that

they could do physics, thanks to Mike’s tutelage.

We as his colleagues began to see the true “Mr.

Mike” too. He offered to fix things and to build

things for us… he repaired numerous pieces of lab

equipment, and I mean lots of stuff, he donated a

microwave oven when he could not repair our old one, plus he built

a classroom greenhouse for the bio lab. He jumped in as a Robotics

team volunteer and donated hours of his time and needed equipment

to guide the project to completion. When he learned that our new

sailboat fleet needed bunks to sit upon at the yacht club, he built

those for us and refused to accept a penny of reimbursement. And

when he saw Paul Kieda and Jeremy struggling to hand cut all of

those freshman religion tiles to fit our giant X H S wood frames, he

took it upon himself to purchase the proper power tool and to spend

a day of his April vacation to cut and fit each tile. I know I cannot

pass that beautiful display now without thinking of Mike’s generosity

and kindheartedness. Yes, that teacher from New Haven had the right

guy – this is the Mike Ricciuti we’ve come to love and respect.

Now, who among us has not heard Mike start a conversation with

these words: “Well, when I worked for the military…?” But did you

know that we recently learned from him that the job he’s held the

longest has been this one, for 15 years. And so Mike: as you retreat

into a well-deserved retirement, we hope your new conversations will

now begin with these words: “Well, when I served as the physics

teacher at Xavier High School…” and we trust that what follows these

words will be stories told with the same affection and fond memories

that we will forever hold for you. Congratulations Mike! X

40 Xavier Today

Brother J. Robert Houlihan leads a life of

service. A 1949 graduate of St. John’s

Preparatory School in Danvers, MA, he

entered the Xaverian Brothers congregation

the following September, received his habit in

March of 1950 and took his first vows in March

of 1952. A graduate of St. John’s University in

1959, he attended Columbia University Teachers

College, earning his MA in 1966. One could

consider him a lifelong student, as he has also

studied at Hunter College, LaSalle College,

Eastern Michigan University, Salem State

College (MA), Eastern Illinois State University,

Oglethorpe College, and the Ecumenical

Summer Institute at Assumption College.

Brother Houlihan spent a total of 54 years in

the classroom before moving on to a support

role at Xavier. He began teaching 4th grade at

St. Theresa’s School in Brooklyn. He then taught

Mr. Tony Jaskot has dedicated almost his

entire life to Xavier High School. Having

graduated from Xavier in 1969, Tony pursued

a B.S and M.S. at Southern Connecticut State

at Cardinal Hayes High School in the

Bronx and came to Xavier shortly

after that in 1970. Ever since, Brother

Houlihan has been a mainstay of our

institution. For many years, he could

be found teaching Introduction to

Physical Science in one of the labs at

Xavier.

For those that know Brother Houlihan, they

recognize his love for service to the special

needs and disabled community. He has led

MYARC (Middlesex Youth ARC) programs for

developmentally handicapped persons which

he inaugurated over 40 years ago at both Xavier

and Mercy High Schools.

There is a reason why the Brother J. Robert

Houlihan Endowed Scholarship is annually

one of the most well supported at Xavier.

Brother’s impact on decades of young men

in the classroom is beyond compare, and his

continued service to Xavier after his teaching

career is immeasurable.

On Saturday July 27th the Most Reverend

Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich presented

Brother Houlihan the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice,

the highest medal that can be awarded to the

laity by the Papacy. It is also known as the

“Cross of Honour.” who, after 54 years in the

classroom, decided to move from the faculty to

a support staff position at Xavier.

University. He joined the Xavier faculty in 1974

as a religion, health, and physical education

teacher. In addition, Tony has served as

cook, chauffeur, ticket salesman, mentor, XLI

coordinator, speaker, and so much more. Tony

has come to exemplify all that “Be A Man” is.

Tony served as the head football coach at

Xavier from 1984 – 1994, inheriting the position

from legendary coach Larry McHugh. Be it a

win or a loss, no matter the result, Tony was

the consummate coach. There was a lesson to

be learned in every victory and every defeat.

Play could always improve; how to win humbly

and lose graciously; how you play is far more

important than the outcome; these lessons are

at the heart and soul of the athletic department

at Xavier, with Mr. Jaskot at the helm.

Tony started the freshman baseball program

in 1978 and coached the team for 16 years

and also served as assistant athletic director

under Artie Kohs. In 1997, Tony was named

athletic director after Artie’s retirement. Tony

also serves as an “advisor” to the Campus

Ministry program. The spiritual side of Tony is a

subdued one, but his Catholicism permeates all

aspects of his life. He was recognized with the

Saint Mary’s Press Ambassador of Christ Award

in 2007.

An inductee in to the Xavier Hall of Honors

in 1996, he later received the Ryken Award in

1998 and was inducted in to the Middletown

Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. With numerous

athletic awards and accolades to his name,

Tony now serves on the Middletown Parks and

Recreation Commission and is a member of the

Polish Falcons. X
