How the Pictures in This Book Were Made
All the sets for the pictures in this book were created by photog-
rapher Walter Wick. The sets, ranging in size from approxi-
mately 4' to 8' wide, were made ofwood, paper, sand, toys,
jewelry, furniture, plants, and other props.
As the sets were constructed, Walter Wick andJean Marzollo
conferred on the mysteries to be suggested and on various
objects in the sets, selecting them for their rhyming potential, as
well as their aesthetic and playful qualities. The objects were hid-
den so they would be fun for readers to find. Walter Wick lit
each set carefully to create the right shadows, depth, and myste-rious mood. Finally, he photographed the set with an 8" by 10"
view camera. Each set was then dismantled before the next one
was created. The sets survive only as photographs to inspire
rhyming, riddle making, visual creativity, and the exciting chal-
lenge of the / Spy hunt.
Walter Wick, the inventor ofmany photographic gamesfor Games magazine, is the photographer of/ Spy: A Book of
