You can search the world over and not find another town with the name of Wytheville. But, the name is just the beginning of the unique and interesting things to experience in this beautiful small town in Southwest Virginia.

Wytheville (pronounced WITH-vill) was founded in 1792 as Evansham on 100 acres of land. Named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia – George Wythe, it was selected as the county seat of Wythe County (1790). At the time, it was the junction of two great western roads, the Ingles Ferry and the Peppers Ferry trails. Today, two federal highways, Interstates

77 & 81, bring thousands of visitors each day to experience the charm and beauty of this small southern community.

DowntownDowntown Wytheville is open for business with an extensive revitalization underway that is breathing new life in Main Street and beyond. It is also a “work in progress.” Please be aware that in 2016 and 2017, you may see sections “under construction” as our community improves the functionality and accessibility of this historic downtown area.

A great way to begin your Downtown Wytheville experience is by exploring the history of Wytheville through a leisurely stroll. Pick up a copy of Wytheville’s Historic Walking Tour at the Visitor Center. This tour highlights the many historical events that happened in this area including the Battle of Wytheville during the Civil War and the birth of a very significant First Lady. Some of the oldest structures in Wytheville can be found in the Downtown area and many have an interesting story still in the making.

The tour can begin at Wytheville’s Heritage Preservation Center with an orientation to the Haller-Gibboney Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd Museums. Medicine, war battles, and a “Summer Without Children” are just a few of the topics covered in the exhibits.

One of the most eye-catching sights on Main Street, the “Big Pencil” has been a landmark for over 50 years at the Wytheville Office Supply. Constructed in the 1950s, it is made of metal and is approximately 30 feet long.

Another unique business with local flavor is Skeeters. Visitors come from far and wide to take a bite out of a “Skeeter dog” and the sign on the side of the building indicates that over nine million have been sold. Within the same building is the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum. The only First Lady museum in Virginia, this facility honors the life and legacy of a very distinguished daughter of Wytheville. While in later life she would be a United States First Lady, the Museum shows how her childhood in Wytheville helped shape her future.

Southwest Virginia’s newest boutique hotel, the Bolling Wilson Hotel, honors this famous Virginian. The property includes 30 guest rooms, a restaurant, ballroom, outdoor dining and rooftop bar.

Nearby, you will find a variety of interesting shops featuring collectibles, antiques, unique gift items, artisan

creations, and many other items. New shops are opening all the time adding their own special flavor, including Hannah’s Attic, Black Horse Artisan Gallery, Coffee and Crumbs, and Robert’s Country Store.

A couple of blocks from the downtown area, you will find two beautiful local parks. Elizabeth Brown Memorial Park offers shelters and picnic tables and is the home of the annual Chautauqua Festival each June. Withers Park was once a baseball field and now includes a walking track, playground and the Wall of Honor which includes the War Memorial, Civic, and Sports Monuments.

Just a few blocks from this area are seven structures believed to be the oldest original buildings in Wytheville. Although changes have been made, all or part of the houses existed prior to or during the 1830’s. Several served as

boarding houses to accommodate visitors who chose to “summer” in Wytheville in those days. Restoration work began in 1976 and continues today. You can find several interesting shops including The Farmer’s Daughter and Batiks Etctera & Sew What Fabrics, Wilderness Road World Trading Co. and the historic restaurant, Log House 1776. The Farmer’s Daughter features a creative variety of gifts, jewelry, apparel, and home décor. Batiks Etctera & Sew What Fabrics is a colorful shop with a wide selection of fabrics, patterns, and sewing/quilting accessories. Wilderness Road World Trading Company, located adjacent to the Log House 1776, includes an eclectic assortment of unique gift items and art. Since 1902, Guynn Furniture has offered a full line of national name brand home furnishings and accessories.

On the opposite end of Main Street, you will find the Trinkle Mansion Bed & Breakfast. This historic structure was once a grand home and is now a luxurious bed & breakfast.

Every weekend from May-October, special artisan and music events are held. This byway travels through the Jefferson National Forest with many sites on the Virginia Birding Trail nearby. Outdoor Enthusiast

Day 3: No matter the season, some of the most beautiful scenery in the area can be viewed from the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway in Wythe and Bland Counties. Several trails off this National Forest route offer great hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities. At the top of Big Walker Mountain, you will find a 100-foot lookout tower and a country store with delicious ice cream. In neighboring Bland County, explore the heritage of some of the area’s earliest settlers at Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum.

Day 4: Before heading home, experience the serenity of Beagle Ridge Herb Farm and Southwest Virginia’s only walk through butterfly house, Flying Flowers.

Day 2: Hike, bike or ride horseback the 57-mile long New River Trail. Much of this historic trail is on an abandoned railroad track that parallels the historic New River. Rather spend your day in the water? Visit the Foster Falls area of New River Trail State Park for canoe and kayak rentals or premiere fishing.

Day 1: Hike to the top of High Rocks at Crystal Springs Recreation Area for breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Spend the afternoon exploring Downtown Wytheville and learn about the area’s interesting heritage by taking the Historic Walking Tour and visiting historic sites and museums.

Day 1: Unwind with a romantic weekend away. Choose to stay at the luxurious Trinkle Mansion Bed & Breakfast, the historic Bolling Wilson Boutique Hotel, or one of many other lodging establishments.

Spend an entertaining evening seeing a Broadway-caliber performance with a four-course meal at the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre.

Day 2: Experience locally grown and crafted wines at West Wind Farm & Rural Retreat Wineries. Dig deep into local heritage at one of the area’s historic museums, mansions or historic sites. Taste local culture at one of the area’s many special events or festivals that feature music and artisans.

Day 3: Explore one of the many local, state or national recreation areas with an abundance of opportunities for leisure or challenging experiences with the outdoors or just take a relaxing scenic drive and learn about the many interesting small communities on the back roads of Southwest Virginia.




History

Founded in 1790, Wythe County was named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia – George Wythe. Early settlement can be credited to the access to water (the New River and many creeks) and the abundance of natural resources, including lead. One hundred acres was selected as the county seat in 1792 and Evansham, now Wytheville, became the central town.

The history of the area patterns the history of the nation with many interesting events, legends, and characters along the way. Begin with a visit to the Wytheville Heritage Preservation Center at 115 West Spiller Street to the Haller-Gibboney Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd Museums. Medicine, the Civil War, and polio’s unique impact are a few of the topics covered. The Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum depicts the mid-20th century era with its unique look at transportation. The self-guided Wytheville’s Historic Walking Tour showcases local history from pre-Civil War times until today.

Your Journey begins at

Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum gives a glimpse into how one Wythe County family lived in the mid-1800’s and how the area’s first doctor practiced medicine.

The region’s only African American Heritage Museum is located within the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center and has an emphasis on education through photographs and exhibits. Five locations on the Virginia Civil War Trails mark the route of Toland’s Raid and offer a beautiful scenic drive between locations.

Also located in the historic district, the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum tells the influential and controversial story of this First Lady’s life from her childhood in Wytheville to her years in the nation’s capital.

Overlooking the New River, the Historic Shot Tower was built more than 150 years ago to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water.

A nearby monument honors native son Stephen F. Austin who would later be known as the “Father of Texas”.

When’s the last time you visited a southern mansion? Steeped in history and legend, Major Graham Mansion and The Mansion at Fort Chiswell are located minutes from I-77 and 81 and are open seasonally for special events and tours.

You would expect an area that includes the second oldest river in the world to have an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities…and you would be right. There are plenty of waters to fish in from creeks and ponds,

The area includes local, state, and national parks that offer recreational experiences for all ages and abilities. Winding through mountains steeped in history, the Big Walker Mountain National Forest Scenic Byway passes through 16 miles of land with year-round beauty. Easy accessibility from Interstate 77 makes this an ideal detour on a traveler’s journey. From the glistening frozen tree-tops in winter to the blanket of spring and summer flowers to the breathtaking fall foliage, visitors will find spectacular seasonal views. There is a wealth of camping, hiking, hunting, and picnicking opportunities in the Jefferson National Forest. From Civil War battles to historical figures, stop at the roadside markers and learn more. Numerous hiking trails provide fresh air and interesting plants, flowers, and foliage. Park & Historic Shot Tower is a “must-see” on any visit. This 57-mile long trail follows an abandoned railroad bed along the historic New River. Activities include hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, canoeing, tubing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, and camping.

1 Crawfish Trail/AT Loop – parking area on Strawberry Rd. (SR722) be-tween Wytheville and Rural Retreat. Stream crossing, some up-hill climbs with numerous up and down-hill walking. 10.2 miles of trail total. Appalachian Trail – About 3.5 miles of the AT runs through Wythe County at the western end of the Crawfish Valley. Parking off Strawberry Rd. 2 Walker Mtn. Trail / Monster Rock Trail – Starts at the Big Walker Lookout Tower off Rte. 52. Ends at the Appala-chian Trail in Crawfish Valley. 12 miles of trail total on natural surface. 3 Seven Sisters – The trail heads are at the Stony Fork Campground on the right hand side of Krenning Road (SR 717) 0.3 miles from US 52 at parking area on the right side of Krenning Road (SR 717) or 2.9 miles from US 52 head-ing east and 1.1 mile back from I-77.

4 Rural Retreat Lake loopAccessed from Rural Retreat Lake Road (SR 677) to Lake Road (SR 678). 3.1 miles of trail.

The Wytheville Community Center has a variety of areas with something for everyone including: a 400 square foot cardio and weight center, an aquatics center with a 6 lane, 25 yard pool, water park play area with slide, therapy pool and hot tub, an indoor climbing wall, youth/teen center, two full court basketball gyms, aerobic studio, 1/8 mile walking track, and adult/senior lounge.

5 Crystal Springs Recreation Area 276-223-3378. 1800 acre recreation area with 12 miles of hiking/mountain biking loop trails. Parking access off Pump Hollow Lane (SR 684) off Rte. 21 south of Wytheville, VA. 6 Iron Mtn. Trail (Hale Lake to Divide Trail near) – natural surface mountain terrain 10.6 miles of trail total. Parking off Rte. 21. View Nation-al Geographic topographic maps for change in usage. 7 Virginia Highlands Horse Trail (VHHT) –Accessed from several loca-tions – SR728, Rte. 94, from New River Trail, or Rte. 14 Forest Hwy. View National Geographic topographic maps for change in usage. 8 New River Trail - 57 mile long Virginia State Park on a granite dust surfaced trail which is fairly flat with gradual elevation change. Parking Areas are in the Town of Pulaski, Draper, (Wythe County - Allisonia, New River Trail State Park, at the Shot Tower, Austinsville, and Ivanhoe), Byllesby Dam, Fries, Gambetta, Chestnut Creek Falls, Cliffview, and Galax.

FISHING AREAS1 Rural Retreat Lake – Located at Rural Retreat Lake Campground, this 90 Acre Fishing Lake (Musky, Chan-nel Catfish, Sunfish, Bass, Crappie and also Trout Fishing Pond). Small pond is stocked with trout year around (bank fishing on trout pond only). Can be accessed from Rural Retreat Lake Road (SR 677) to Lake Road (SR 678). Bank and non-motorized boat fishing only.

2 Cripple Creek – Stocked trout fishing and private trophy trout fishing along the sparkling clear Cripple Creek mountain water (Rainbow, Brook, Brown and Golden Trout). Accessed off Cedar Springs Road (SR 612) in Speedwell, VA. Bank and wade fishing only.

3 East/West Fork Dry Run – Native Wild Brook Trout Stream located just south of Speedwell, VA in the Jefferson National Forest. Can be accessed from Rte. 21 and Forest Highway 57. Bank and wade fishing only.

4 Venrick Run – Native Wild Rainbow Trout Stream in the Crystal Springs Recreation area near the Big Survey Wildlife Management Area just south of the Town of Wytheville. Can be accessed from Pump Hollow Lane (SR 684) off Rte. 21 south of Wytheville, VA. Bank and wade fishing only. Special regulation catch and release only.

5 New River – The river offers class I-IV rapids in certain areas of the River. Available fishing includes Small-mouth Bass, Walleye, Musky, Channel Catfish and more. View map for all the boat launching locations. Bank, wading in shallow areas, kayaking, canoeing and motorized boating.
