By Graeme StevenIt was the dead o night and the room was ull o lights.

Not bright, efficient, practical lights that any normalman with means would use to illuminate his home, but tiny firefly sized motes o every color. Tese lightsmoved around the lower hall in a seemingly randomashion; zagging here, bobbing over there, and in mostcases, hovering perectly still some way off the ground.

Tis was all that Von Schills eyes told him, yet he eltno alarm or even curiosity because he knew where hewas. Not some ethereal airy grotto, nor yet a madmanscarnival or puppet show.

    He was in Ampersand.

Te Guild wanted to find this place badly, just as they didevery other location in Maliaux over which they couldnot exert direct control. Not that there was anything

going on in Ampersand that necessarily threatenedthem directly it just annoyed the hell out o them thatthey couldnt find it.

Von Schill sucked on the last finger-length o his cigarand added his own little amber light to the conflagration.Te room was large and most o it vanished into inkyblackness, and it was ull o figures. Tere were dozensand dozens o them, announced by sof tell-tale glows the dim shape o a hot solenoid here, a diode there.

    Ampersand was ull o constructs.

Tey came here rom all over Maliaux; labor constructslaboratory mishaps, a whole array o mechanisms thathad developed or been imbued with some degree osentience. Machines: some with just the merest inklingo sel-awareness, others as smart as any man on thestreet, and all o them tired o the abuse, neglect, andbattery o their ormer masters.

On Von Schills lef was a rail golem, sitting on the floorwith its huge legs drawn up. Its skull had been crushednear flat by some industrial accident and it periodicallyannounced its presence by small fits o sparking that litup the interior o its skull. Huge metal paws designedor shoveling and smashing twitched spastically. Hemoved urther out o reach.

He wasnt just here sight-seeing, although, this place

was definitely worth a casual eyeballing i you had theree time. He was looking or a specific construct andhad a strong suspicion this was the place to look.

    6/57

He moved through the near-complete darkness, stepping around clusters o constructs that stood orcrouched acing one another, as i rozen in the acto conversing. Many o them looked completely shutdown, but here and there a metal head rotated to ollowhim. Sof muttering could just be detected in some othe nearer clusters, but whatever dialect they were usingwas unknown to him.

A big machine barred his way; it was painted a deepnavy blue, the paint chipped away to reveal rustingblistered steel around the edges o its torso and limbs. Itlooked like it had seen a lot o heavy use and most o itwas covered in fine scratches. A dozen crimson spidereyes looked down at him, their expression unreadable.

++IDENIY: UNKNOWN++ clanked a thickmechanical voice rom somewhere in the chest.

    ++SAUS? MISSION?++

Von Schill gave it the once-over. Instead o hands, ithad heavy curved pincers that looked capable o slicingthrough steel and it probably tipped the scales at ouror five hundred pounds. He decided on the diplomaticapproach.

Im here to find someone, he said. I got a job I needthem to do.

Te worker construct seemed to scrutinize him withthose tiny angry eyes.

++ASSOCIAION: GUILD?++ it rumbled. Te wornsteel pincers slid open in anticipation.

No, Von Schill shook his head. No Guild. Freikorps.

Te machine seemed almost disappointed. It gave him

one last stare and stepped away.

Te mechanical zoo continued. As he moved deeper intothe building, the concentration o shapes increased. Hehad never suspected there were this many in Maliaux, let alone this many rogue escapees. But then, they were

almost a third class o citizen, going about theirmind-numbing labors unseen and unheard by

    the greater populace.

Finally, he ound what he was looking or

Near the center o Ampersand was where the mostsophisticated and sentient o the renegades congregatedTere was a gathering o them around a metal benchunder one o the ew sources o illumination in thewhole place a glass globe on a thick rubber wire thatwas suspended rom the ceiling some unathomabledistance overhead. Te globe threw out a bluish-whiteillumination that was bright enough to make Von Schillsquint.

Four bulky and inhuman shapes crouched over thebench. Absurdly, impossibly, they were playingcards.

Von Schill recognized the construct he was aferimmediately his target sat directly ahead

acing him. Tere was a raw looking socket

    7/57

at the end o its bulky right arm, like something hadbeen temporarily removed Von Schill had a good ideawhat. Instead, a miniature wire clip resembling a bandleaders music stand stuck up, holding a an o five cards.A round green optic in its chest bathed the card acesin emerald light and a single red eye in the dome headrolled slowly rom the cards to its opponents, then backto the cards. Te lef arm was ar more conventional and

hovered nearby with the fingers poised.

Lazarus. Guild-hater and anarchist. Dented, scarred, exceptionally capable. And potentially available or hire.

Von Schill bided his time, settling against a pillar (whichlater turned out to be a water tank on legs) and watched.

Directly across rom Lazarus was a boxy machinewith a conusing flurry o arms, each made rom thin

interconnecting rods not much thicker than a marshreed. Von Schill couldnt quite figure out what it hadbeen designed or, but it sure knew its way around apack o cards. Te arms knied and jabbed and thosecards flew around the table.

o the lef o the dealer box was something that lookedrather like an upended iron bath with cockroach legscoming out the ront. Te body was heavily riveted andmighty-looking thick glass port holes were fitted allaround the top and a single green eye on a stalk moved

around inside. Tere was something nautical-lookingabout it rom the tubing that ran along its underside,to the streaks o salt-eaten rust on its flanks and thestink o river mud, it had to be some sort o mechanicaldiving bell.

On the right, and apparently the ocus o Lazarussattention, was a thin and somehow severe lookingmachine. It held its cards with double-jointed limbsand Von Schill noticed that the eight fingers attachedto each hand were all fitted with rubber tips. It lookedto him like a clerical mechanism an adding machine,or some sort o accounting device. Te bullet holes in itsuggested that it may not have proven as trustworthy asits creator had hoped.

Tey were using washers as chips and the largest pileby ar was beside the adding machine, which seemedappropriate or a game where mathematics was a actor, but, as the constructs played, Von Schill noticed that thetide o the game was steadily turning in Lazaruss avor.

Tat single red eye spent a lot o time fixed on the addingmachine as it shuffled and ussed with its cards. Lazarusseemed to pulse slowly, and then the chips would godown with Lazarus winning another hand.

Von Schill grinned around his cigar. He knew whyLazarus was winning, but it wasnt his place to explain itto the others at the table.

Finally, inevitably, the other three machines tapped out, drained o their chips and flat broke. One by one theyclumped and ratcheted away rom the table, leaving thevictor sitting alone with his mound o oily washers.

Tis looked like as good a time as any and Von Schillslipped into the stool recently vacated by the dealer box.

    Good game, he said.

Te red eye rotated around and fixed on him or someseconds, then rolled back to counting its winnings.

    ++VON SCHILL++ it grated. ++LONG WAY FROMHOME, FREIKORPS++

Got a job offer or you. Tought you might like to putthat mimic ability o yours to better use than cheatingat cards.

Te eye turned to him again.

++CHEAING. A FLESH NOION. FLESH LAW ISCOMPLEX; ILLOGICAL. SEMANICS. EHICSMORALIY. O EXIS UNDER HA YOKE ISEQUALLY ILLOGICAL. ERGO, AMPERSAND++

Von Schill chuckled. Dress it up ancy any way you likeLazarus. Its still cheating.

++HROUGH FLESH EYES, PERHAPS. CONSRUCLAW IS SIMPLER++

I wonder what the diving bell and that walkingabacus with the bullet holes in it would say about yourinterpretation o construct law.

Lazarus lifed a massive multi-barreled weapon romunder the bench and fixed it to the empty socket oits right arm. A long, glinting bayonet snapped outbetween them like a spear.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    8/57

    ++NOHING++ it grunted.

Von Schill eyed the cruel weapon. Youre probablyright.

Te construct got to its eet, towering over the still-seated Freikorps leader.

    ++SAE YOUR PURPOSE, FREIKORPS++

Von Schill sucked on his cigar and blew a puff o smokeinto the machines midriff, momentarily clouding thegreen glow.

Oh, I think this will be right up your street, he grinned.

Seville Septis wiped his damp palms on his pants. Hewas a habitually nervous individual and was especiallyso this evening. He was to make a presentation to theGovernor General himsel in the morning and suchopportunities carried an inherent double-edged sword. On the one side, his presentation could go well anddoors would almost certainly open or an aspiring GuildLawyer such as himsel. On the other, i his intelligencewas bad, he would just as certainly be relegated tosome unflattering and dead-end duty in a moldy Guildbasement or the rest o his proessional lie.

He had done as much as he could to ensure the ormerresult and the thick shea o papers under his arm wasthe result o months o research and data collation. Inshort, he was airly certain that his web o inormantshad located Ampersand.

Not that the place had any great military or tacticalvalue, but he knew that the existence o a haven orrogue constructs that had fled their appointed duty, stuck in the Guild Generals craw, and it was rumoredthat the individual who brought about its extinctionwould curry great avor with the man.

It was hard to keep a secret even within the Guild officesand there were already some circulating rumblingsabout the content o Sevilles briefing. Tese rumblingshad gathered momentum to the point where he hadbeen assigned a guard unit to make sure that whatevervital crumbs o intelligence he had unearthed werepreserved until a proper evaluation could be made.

Tis suited Seville just fine the streets o Maliauxcould not be considered sae even under the middaysun, let alone a late night journey through a successiono brick lanes to his home.

It was a good thing that the Guardians were with him.

Tere were our o them huge, hulking, and metal

knights. Tey ormed a square around him, marchingin perect lock-step with kite shields over an inchthick held against their barrel chests and broadswordsclenched in giant fists.

Even one o them would have made a potential ambusherthink twice. With our o them at his side day and night,Seville had developed a trace o a swagger in his walk.

And there was something else an ace in the hole that

no one knew about but him a silent shadow thatflitted across the roofops overhead and watched theirlittle procession with baleul amber eyes. Seville hadnever seen much more than a suggestion o the Hunterconstruct, but he knew it was out there, ranging aheadand scouring the streets and alleys or signs o danger.

Tey lef Curmudgeon Square and ollowed Brook Walkor some distance. Te crunch o armored eet on thecobbles echoed and, along with the clanking joints andhissing pistons, it sounded like a lethargic iron wave

was rolling slowly through the dark. Te Guardianswere imposing, but ar rom stealthy.

Tey passed the statue o Long om, what the localscalled an unremarkable bronze statue that leanedat a bizarre angle as though struck in the legs with acannonball, its eatures obscured by green corrosionand passed down Carpenter Row where the smell oreshly cut and planed wyrd wood had permeated intothe stones.

Sevilles mind was elsewhere, running obsessivelythrough his presentation once again. Te intelligencewas good; he was certain o it. wo separate scouts hadconfirmed the same location afer several expensiveweeks o searching. Te third scout never returned, but Seville knew the old proverb about omelets andnever lost a moments sleep over it. Tere were hand-drawn maps and bearings prepared by the scouts. TeQuarantine Zone was legendary or resisting attemptsto quantiy and map it, almost as i the buildings

    9/57

and streets themselves shifed to oil the Guildcartographers, but the inormation was only weeks oldand Seville was confident Ampersand could be ound ithey moved quickly.

His musings were interrupted by something allingrom the black sky above and exploding on the hardcobbles. He almost took it or a chunk o roo tiles, but

or the ringing metallic sound it made when it landed.A finger-sized piece o steel and a spring hit him in thechest as he heard similar ragments rattling against theshields o the lead Guardians.

He peered down at the twisted object lying on theground or a long time beore realization hit. It was aconstructs head. o be more specific, it was a Hunterconstructs head.

His view was instantly blocked by the our Guardiansraising their shields and clanging together, squeezingthe Lawyer into a cramped rescue space in the middle.

And then the world started to explode around him.

Lazarus had waited or the Hunter to come within range, turning his baleul red eye upon it and soaking up theinherent agility and stealth o the mechanism. His heavy

crushing eet had become quiet and sure pads, his loudclanking joints and clunking drive pistons had becomeas quiet as the breeze that sifed across the chimney potsat his back.

Te Hunter was crouched at the edge o the roo, fivestories up and watching the approaching Guild Lawyerand entourage rather like a cat watches an unsuspectingmouse. Lazarus had got within eet o it beore hispresence was finally detected. A single thrust o hisbayonet and a hard twist with his lef hand and themachine was decapitated. Lazarus was not surprisedat the machines ragility the Guild was as penny-pinching as it was incompetent, and the Hunter waslikely cast rom recycled rying pans and watch parts.

He kicked the sparking body aside and took its placeon the roo, watching the Guardians and their sofflesh charge moving down Carpenter Row. Even atthis distance, he could eel the solidity and durabilityo the Guardians as they approached, their heavy eet

stomping down on the cobbles, their shields raised high

Lazarus eye glowed and his alloys began to change, growing denser and heavier as he started to absorbtheir essence. Along with their endurance, came anunderstanding o their dogged single-dimensionalprogramming their stoic stand and absorb all wastheir weakness in this scenario and Lazarus intended to

    exploit it to the ull.

He wanted them in close or his firepower to have themaximum effect and, when they had reached just theright spot, he threw the severed Hunters head outover the edge o the roo and watched it drop onto thecobbles and smash.

Instinctively, the Guardians snapped into a tightormation with their broad shields raised to all ours

    points o the compass. Perect.

Lazarus raised his right arm and with a hollow punkfired a stubby grenade shell about the size o an appledown into the tight knot o constructs.

Sevilles teeth rattled in his head as the first explosionhit. Although the bulk o the Guardians shielded himrom the worst o the blast itsel, hot flame enguled

his legs and the pressure wave elt as though both hisears had been slapped simultaneously. He would havestaggered i there had been room.

An instant later, there was another explosion andanother. Te Guardians were being pounded by somesort o artillery weapon he could hear shells strikingthe upraised shields, could eel the impacts travellingthrough the huge bodies and into his own.

He started screaming or the Guardians to back up, toget him off the street, but his words were drowned bythe incessant stream o explosions. Shrapnel stung hisankles and calves his pants were starting to smolder and the Guardian to his ront and right was rockingbackwards, taking the brunt o the blasts. Its shield wasalready buckled and deormed and, as Seville watchedanother blast drove the shield back into its chest.Something inside broke and he saw a handul o tinyoil-covered cogs all rom its cracked chest plate.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    10/57

Te Guardians were tough, but Seville suspected theycouldnt take this punishment or long. He had to findan escape route beore they were all smashed to pieces.

He turned around in the cramped gap and began topush at the broad back o the Guardian that had beenprotecting his rear, hoping to make a big enough gap toslip out in the conusion. He may as well have tried to

    push over a house.

Te shelling continued; he glanced over his shoulderand saw the source contrails arcing down rom theroo across the street. Tey were being bombarded andthe Guardians were reacting to it the only way theyknew how, by putting themselves and their shieldsbetween the attack and their master.

Move, he shrieked over the thunder and flames. We

    need to move!

Te Guardians never responded. Te orward constructthat had been taking most o the pounding suddenlystaggered and ell, spewing oil and broken parts. Itsshield had ruptured and a grenade had hit it ull inthe chest. Te others immediately moved to close thegap, interlocking their shields and bracing their sturdylegs, but they were already battered and their metal wasblackened rom the explosions.

Finally, though, he saw his chance. With the other twoGuardians moving orward to orm an arrow-headshield wall against the grenade salvo, there was a spaceto the rear. A building sat less than fify eet away andthe door looked none-too sturdy. A run and a hardshoulder charge and he would be halway to reedom.

His escape plan came to a jerking halt, however, whenone o the Guardians grabbed his upper arm and yankedhim into its shadow.

++SAY BEHIND ME++ it bellowed through the hail oexplosions, ignoring his pleas and struggles to be released.

Quite suddenly, the barrage o grenades shifed, dropping low and bouncing under the raised shields othe Guardians. Seville recoiled in horror but could onlytwist like a leashed dog in the Guardians grasp as theyellow blossom o fire enguled them all.

Lazarus stepped off the roofop, landing on his hauncheswith a tremendous crunch that ractured the stone, using the Hunters agility to absorb the drop rom sucha height.

Te Guardians were all down as he got close he sawthat one was still active although its legs were twistedruins. Its implacable ace was fixed on him as it dragged

itsel orward with its remaining arm.

    ++INERECEP++ it grated. ++ELIMINAE++

Lazarus drove the point o his bayonet through its skulland twisted the mechanism finally slumped.

He had to kick around in the wreckage or a minuteto find the Lawyer. He was alive and relatively intact, although his ace and clothes were burned and torn

rom the grenade blasts. rembling convulsively, hestared up at the big construct with terror and sel-pityhis mask blasted off.

Lazarus pressed the tip o his oil smeared blade againstthe shivering Lawyers nose.

    ++HE DOSSIER++ he said.

Many o the paper sheets were burned around the edgesand one piece o shrapnel had punched a hole clean

through the older, but the Lawyer meekly offered upthe tattered inormation nevertheless.

Lazarus took it without comment, his gun arm pointeddirectly at Seville. Te barrel mouths still glowed aintly. It would be easy to finish off this Guild rat; a singlethrust would do it. Von Schill had been quite specificabout keeping him alive, though. Te Freikorps leaderseemed to think that there was more inormationto be had rom the Lawyer inormation that wouldcommand a high price rom interested parties.

Lazarus cared nothing or such intelligence. His onlymotivation in taking this mission had been protecting theanonymity o Ampersand. Besides, he hated the Guild andeverything it touched. He needed only to kill this rat andthen the scouts indicted in the dossier and Ampersandwould once again be beyond the Guilds reach.Von Schill had been insistent, but Lazarus was notgoverned by his flesh law. He raised his bayonet armand Seville closed his eyes.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    11/57 1

And then he lowered it again.

Seville cracked an eye open, and, seeing that the GrimReaper had passed him over, let out a sob o relie.

Well, well, said a gruff voice rom the shadows. Lookslike youre governed by flesh law afer all, Lazarus.

Von Schill had been watching rom the alley mouth asthe Guardians were pounded to scrap. Tis had neverreally been a test o Lazaruss abilities, but more a testo his dependability. Te constructs hatred o the Guildwas renowned and there was probably nothing Lazaruswould find harder to resist than killing a slippery weasellike Seville Septis.

And Von Schill needed to know i he was dependable.

Te decisive moment over, a dozen Freikorps troopersfloated out o the shadows and two trappers appearedon the roo.

For a second I thought you were going to kill him, VonSchill said as he walked over.

    ++FOR A SECOND++ Lazarus agreed.

    Why didnt you?

Te big construct retracted his bayonet and lookeddown at the sobbing Lawyer with his expressionless eye.

++O PROEC AMPERSAND FROM GUILDAENION WOULD INDICAE FEAR OF HEGUILD++ he said, grinding out each word in amonotone. ++WE ARE NO AFRAID. LE HEMCOME++

Te Freikorps leader made a gesture and the Lawyerwas hauled away.

You did good tonight, Lazarus, he said. Te Freikorpscould use someone with your skills. I got something inthe pipeline comin up. Something big.

    Lazarus gazed down at him.

++SAE YOUR PURPOSE++ he said in his bassmetallic voice.

Von Schill patted around himsel until he ound a cigar, jammed it in his mouth, and lit it.

Oh, I think this will be right up your street, he grinned.

By Jason PrzybycPretty polished and polished until her hands wereblack and the boots danced in the lamp light. Ten shechecked on the new hats. Made rom the hide o somestrange beastie Master Reuel had slain in the snow lastmonth, they were still damp rom the mercury watershed applied. Te ur had turned rusty however, andlooked ready to all off, as i the hat had the Mange. Shepoked with a stiff brush until the hat airly glowed, andthen blew off a ew specks, wrinkling her nose at the

    biting metallic smell.

She looked at her hands. Te shaking was almostimperceptible, unless she tried to pour water into aglass. Hatters shakes? Maybe. She had heard o thembeore her ather - damn his eyes - had sold her intoservitude to stay out o debtors prison. He wouldnthave such a debt i hed stay away rom the saloons. At least he had taught her to cure hides and polishboots, orced her to when he awoke with a headache.

Not much had changed now that she was working orReuel. Te pay was still nothing. She might still earn abeating i the mans finery didnt shine, but she hadntgiven her creepy new master an excuse yet. Unlike herathers drunken riends, he thankully didnt seem benton peeking down her blouse.

Perhaps later youll bloom, he had said one night inthe dark. But or now youre a wee bit green. He wassilent or some moments, leaving her to worry that hemight someday be interested in her blouse afer all.

She began hoping he was asleep, but then heard himmurmur, tongue thick with drink, Now when youbloom ... Perhaps we can preserve your blossom so itwont wilt. He chuckled in a way that made her cringethough she wasnt sure why. Ive heard there is a manwhose ladies never age, even though they ought to bedead. Name was Sss .. ss .. something. He mumbledincoherently, then began to snore.

Tat was her cue to start oraging or some scrap oood. In the cramped house this night, she ound alarge knie, rusty in spots but still sharp, and some stalecrackers. She also tucked away a oul-smelling bottle othe dark liquor Reuel drank. I things got much worseshed drink it to calm her empty belly, or perhaps hopeto all asleep and never awaken. In her opinion, anyonewho willingly drank the stuff was as sharp as a stick ochalk.

Te next night, Reuel came home early. She heard athunderous shot and ootsteps running toward the rontdoor, which flew open. Reuel, his bald pate covered insweat, dashed in.

Wheres me new hat?! Quick now, Pretty. Ive no timeor games.

She dashed across the room and handed it to him.

He doffed it in a flash. Tere, thats better.

He took a step to the door as someone shouted angrilyin the street. He leaned against the wall acing the streetand peeked through the dusty glass. Bugger. Hes herealready. Ill have to take the back door.

A cold metal eeling gripped Prettys guts as she realizedthat Reuel was just like her ather. In debt beyond hismeans. Now what would become o her?

In the rear doorway, as an aferthought, he turned to thegirl. I wont be back here and theres no way you cankeep up. ake care o yersel. He tipped his hat.

You mean Im ree? Te stale crackers clawed theirway back up her throat, but she kept them down.

Te lamp light danced across his grinning mouth, sparkling off a gold tooth, and then a gust o chill wind

blew out the light entirely. Tis is Maliaux, Pretty.Nothing and no one here is ree. Good luck.

Trough the door, now ajar, she listened to the man stillshouting out ront. Come on out, Reuel! You knowwhats coming. Get out here and ace it like a man!

At least he wasnt out back, so Reuel had a chance to getaway. What did she care? Perhaps itd be better i he diednearby, leaving her something to scavenge. Now thatsa terrible thought, she whispered to hersel.

A thunderous gunshot rang out beside the house. No,she breathed. I didnt mean it.

Tere was no more shouting out ront, no sound oanyone living nearby. She was alone. More alone thanwhen her ather was out until dawn. More alone thanwhen she had spent the night in the cold railcar with theother children, sleeping on straw and waiting to be sold. She was more alone than when she had been polishingReuels boots and digging or ood in his unkempthouse. Now, she was truly alone in Maliaux, a placethat scared a well-to-do man with a flintlock, and shehad only a rusty knie and nary a penny to her name.

A name. She didnt even have that. What kind o a namewas Pretty? It was the most generic, empty name a girlever had. But it was hers. It was one thing she owned.Tat and the rusty knie and ... She smiled. And theother hat shed been working on. Reuel hadnt taken it,and it was just as ready as the first one. Tat was what

she needed, a hat. Te night was getting chill. Brushingoff the rusty ur, she placed it atop her head and took adeep breath. Better to be alone with a hat than simplyalone.

She wrapped her torn dress around hersel. See, shethought, one other thing I own. Its my dress. It doesntmatter who bought it, because no one is coming back

or it. She walked to the door and shut it. What seasonwas it here in Maliaux? Instead o Mother Earths ourseasons, warming and cooling the world as neededthe weather here seemed to come rom some differentwoman. Like one addicted to opium. When she couldafford it, the sun shone brighter than it had a right toAnd when she ran out o steam, the mother o this worldrained tears or buried hersel under a heap o snow oras long as she could.

Pretty ound the aghan she had slept with, the onewhich threatened to unravel i she stretched it too arIt had a smell she couldnt identiy, like so many thingsin this dark place. Even i it was just mildew, the smellwas comortingly amiliar. Still chilly, she decided sheneeded something else to keep warm. Lighting a candleshe crept around the room and looked at what therewas. No abric at all. No curtains, having been stolenby a previous boarder i they had even been there. woempty brackets high upon the wall testified that eventhe curtain rod had been sold or scrap.

Her belly rumbled then, and she knew that keepingwarm was just one o her immediate concerns. Tena thought struck her, one which she would have beentoo scared, and not desperate enough, to act on the daybeore. Tere had been a battle in the street just minutesbeore. Someone had been shot. Tat meant a deadbody was laying there, the clothes still warm.

She put her candle on the table and crept close tothe window to look outside. She saw a pair o boots, motionless, sticking out past a building and intothe street. As she watched, a thin shape wove its waybetween the shadows across the street, visible or aninstant as it passed beneath a gaslight en route to thecorpse. A black cap on unkempt dark hair, and ill-fittingclothes one a lithe rame, a red tartan scar trailingbehind. Te ace she jumped back and was glad shewasnt holding the candle, or she surely would havedropped it. Te ace was a mask o scars, as i someonehad drawn on it with a knie and used the same blade

to erase the picture. She edged to the window again andsquinted as she grimaced.

Tere he was, crouching on the dead mans shins androoting through his pockets! Whoever he was, he wasabout to take whatever spoils there were beore shecould get them. Prettys stomach rumbled again, andshe wondered i the dead man had had even a ew coins

on him, to buy a loa o bread. Te boy looked up at her,one blue eye and one milky white, squinting through thewindow. But he waved a filthy hand at her in dismissal, and went back to its work.

Pretty did not dismiss the wretch. What he was takingcould be the difference between her starving or reezingto death today, or living long enough to find work. Shenodded to hersel, resolved, and tied the shawl so itwould stay around her shoulders. Shed need it outside.

She grabbed the knie and, afer a moments thought, blew out the candle. She shut the door quietly andstarted across the rutted, shadowy street toward theruffian. Really, how dangerous could he be? He wasslightly taller than she, and he had moved quite ast, soshed have to be crafy.

Pretty kept the knie behind her back and probed herheart or something that would help her ollow through. She gathered all the hurt, all the abandonment, all theawul eelings she hadnt let hersel eel. From beneath

a sea o woe, something blue reached her eyes and thetears began to all. She grimaced as the chill breezethreatened to reeze the tears, but she didnt brush themaway. Tey had a purpose. She sniffled, and then sniffledlouder. Finally she just wept.

Te filthy mans eyes flitted over his shoulder at her, andthen back at the mans hand which he was holding inhis own. Tere was a thin gold ring on the finger andthe wretch pulled again, trying to get it loose. He hissedcurses under his breath. Probably didnt wash his handstoday. Bah. And then his jaws snapped open and, afera hal seconds hesitation, snapped down on the finger. He wrenched back and orth, grunting. And then, witha satisying pop, the finger came loose with the ring.

As soon as this happened, the wretch reached into hismouth and pulled the finger out, keeping the ring backwith his lips. He flung the finger toward a shadow andspit bloody saliva repeatedly. Blech. Definitely didntwash his hands. Blech. He wiped his mouth on the

sleeve o his coat, which was several sizes too large anddidnt match his pants.

A sob right behind him made him turn and snarl. Hequickly put the ring on his finger and made the handinto a fist to shake at her. Mine! Your tears aint gonnawork on me, bootlicker. Go back to your ancy master.

She sobbed again. Please, I ... I dont have anything.Lamplight caught on three tears, one on the tip o herchin, one rozen on her lef cheek and one in her eyeabout to ollow the dirty path the others had made.

Te thie chortled. Not true. Not true. He relaxed andsat on the dead mans chest. Te carcass brought hiseyes to the same height as hers. He pointed. You gota fine hat there. Would you trade ... His eyes darted tothe ring hed just donned and then, instead, he reached

into his pocket and produced a handul o tarnishedbrass buttons. ... or these. He grinned in a way thathe supposed was honest, but he had long ago orgottenwhat honesty was.

She bent over the hand, examining the buttons. As shedid so, the hat cast a shadow over the wretch and hissmile turned to honest glee in a second. His ree handdarted up to snatch the hat, ree and clear, which wasjust what she had planned. As his grimy fingernailsbrushed the hat, her knie lodged solidly between his

ribs. It wasnt as deep as she had intended, or she wasonly a little girl, but ill-ed thieves arent very thick aferall. His eyes flashed rage, but his attempt to give voice toit only expectorated a mouthul o blood. Brass buttonsclinked against the cobblestones, just as worthless as hispromises, and his lieless head soon ollowed.

Pretty looked at the two corpses, one atop the otherthe one on top steaming a bit in the chill air. She didntknow what to do at first, but then she rememberedShe wiped away her tears. Tere was no need or themnow. A smile crept to her lips. Yes, happiness. She couldeel that or a moment. She assessed the situation andrealized that both corpses would bleed; both wouldstain the mans coat i she hesitated, so she got to work.

Minutes later, she was back inside. She shivered, tryingto orget how cold it had been outside, trying to orgetwhat shed been through, but she kept going back to thathappy moment when shed tricked the skinny buggerand taken all he had, along with everything that dead

By Michael KelmeMichael is a regular writer on the Guessing Zerogaming website at www.guessingzero.com, and is acohost of the podcast Gaming Done Right on theGuessing Zero Network.

Last issue we talked about how to set yoursel into the bestposition possible or achieving victory. List building andplanning, while vital steps in winning games, only get youto the starting line. Once the game begins, it is how you

utilize the tools you have given yoursel that will determinewhether you actually cross the finish line as the victor, orlimp across it bruised and broken.

Te battle has been called. Te board is set. Te Strategyand Schemes have been selected and the crews have beenrevealed and deployed. Te opponents reach across thetable to shake hands. Tere is a tense calm between them.In my imagination, a tumbleweed blows behind them. And with a bang, the first turn has begun.

Keep Your Eye on the Prize

No matter what point it is during your turn, the first questionyou should always ask yoursel beore activating any modelis, Can I lock up a Victory Point in this activation? Lookover your models and quickly determine whether there is aVictory Point available to you right now.

Discovering an opportunity at a Victory Point does notmean you should immediately claim it. Instead, i you seeone, determine i the Victory Point is a sae Victory Pointor i it is one that is under threat. Essentially, determinewhether your opponent could, in their next activationtake that Victory Point away rom you. Could they attackand possibly kill the model? Could they simply engage themodel and prevent it rom interacting? I there is a VictoryPoint available to you, and it is not sae, activate the model

and take the Victory Point. Victory Points are the mostimportant things at the end o the game. Do not pass up anopportunity to claim them.

I there are no Victory Points available to you, the nextquestion is whether your opponent has any available to himor her, and i so, can you reasonably stop that point rombeing taken? Reasonably, in this case, reers to whetherthe point is inevitably going to your opponent, whether youcould stop it permanently, or i you could make gaining

that point so costly to your opponent that they may losethe option or urther points down the line. For examplei your opponent has taken Plant Evidence, keeping one oits objective-grabbing models engaged or two turns meansthat the model may not be able to drop as many SchemeMarkers as your opponent hopes.

Assuming you have no Victory Points that must be takenand your opponent has no Victory Points that could bereasonably stopped, the options or who to activate openquite a bit more. Tere are several tasty options that present

How to prevent your opponent from gaining Victory Points.

    Achieving Victory

themselves, but i winning is the goal, there should be twothat float to the top. I you cannot gain Victory Pointsyoursel or prevent your opponent rom gaining VictoryPoints, you need to position yoursel to gain Victory Pointsin the uture, or position yoursel to prevent your opponentrom gaining Victory Points.

Do not simply attack a model because it is in your path,

unless by attacking that model you are urthering yourfinal goal. Do not spent your Action Points trying to killan opposing master, unless killing that master will helpyou achieve Victory Points or prevent your opponent romdoing so. oo ofen players all into the trap o seeing ajuicy target that could be killed and jumping on it. PuttingOtoto in the path o a Rail Golem may make an Archanistopponent salivate, but i he bites and goes afer Ototoand leaves a orakage to place the last A Line in the Sandmarker beore the game is up, the Archanist player made

the wrong decision. Sacrificing high point models in orderto gain Victory Points is not a bad thing. Go back to theinitial list design and planning or your models. Once amodel completed the job set out or it, anything else it doesis just gravy. Once the Silurid that was purchased or PlantEvidence has finished its job, it can move into other roles. But until the Plant Evidence has finished, it should keep itseye on getting more Victory Points.

    The Four Phases of Influencing

    Victory Points

At the end o the day, there are our different phasesinfluencing Victory Points, and in order to win you willusually need to beat your opponent in three o them. Tesephases are: gaining Victory Points rom your Strategy, gaining Victory Points rom your Schemes, preventing youropponent rom gaining Victory Points rom their Strategy, and preventing your opponent rom gaining Victory Pointsrom their Schemes. Outpace your opponent in three othese our goals and you will win the game.

    Gain Strategy Victory Points

Gaining Strategy Victory Points is one o the most commonways to ensure you end the game with the win. All Strategieshave a ew common traits. Tese are the same or bothplayers during the game, and they all offer a maximum oour Victory Points to each player. Victory Points cannot bescored on the first turn, and players can only earn a single

Victory Point per turn. Simple mathematics determinesthat, without the game going to extended turns, a playerwill need to score a Victory Point every turn, starting onturn two. Tat means you need to set your crew up to startgetting Victory Points on turn one. Tis is detrimentalbecause i you miss getting a Strategy Victory Point duringany turn, the opportunity to make up that point will notcome back around.

Each Strategy requires different preparation to gain VictoryPoints. In order to accomplish Squatters Rights, orexample, you will want to ensure that you are rushing ormultiple Squat Markers on the very first turn. More thanthat, since both players can achieve this mission each turn,i you are trying to ensure that you accomplish your VictoryPoints, it is inefficient to go afer Squat Markers that havealso been targeted by your opponent. Find a pair that youropponent is not targeting and go or those. Reckoning is a

little more difficult to set up. You want to kill two o youropponents models every turn until your opponent runs outo models. Tis means it might be more advantageous toattack models and leave them at lower health levels, so thatin subsequent turns, its easier to target and kill two modelswith ewer AP. Spreading attacks and leaving models alivemight eel like it goes against everything you know, but itis worth it when your goal is to maximize your StrategyVictory Points.

    Gain Scheme Victory Points

Te other common way players think to win games is byensuring that they achieve all o their Victory Points orSchemes. All Schemes come rom a shared Scheme poolbut are hidden rom your opponent while they are buildingtheir list. Tey each max out at three Victory Points, soindividually they are worth less than your Strategy, butcombined, they are worth more.

During the game, it is very important to remember

Schemes. In the throes o conquest and combat, it mightseem anti-climactic to leave eddy standing with his lastwound. Afer all, he is going to regenerate back up and laydown some righteous ury in uture turns. But i leavinghim be means that your nearly-dead minion can insteadInteract and drop a Scheme Marker or Plant Explosivesyour minion should Interact and then clench or theinevitable beat-down. Killing eddy was never the goal othe game in this case.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    23/57 2

Recognize where your points are going to come romand who is going to achieve them, and then stick to thatplan. I your pair o Necropunks are keyed up to grab yourBreakthrough Scheme, do not pull them off that duty untilthey have completed the task, even i your Flesh Constructcould use a couple o hits on an enemy Executioner to bailhim out. Your Flesh Construct has done its job distractingyour enemy rom targeting the Necropunk. Let his sacrifice

    be what wins the game.

    Deny Strategy Victory Points

Tere are several lines that divide good and great players.Good players know how to maximize their own VictoryPoints. Great players know the importance o alsominimizing their opponents Victory Points.

Go back up and reread the section on Gaining Strategy

Victory Points. Done that? Now flip your mind sideways. All the truths rom above still hold value. Instead o thinkinghow to use them to ensure you get Victory Points, think ohow to stop your opponent rom getting Victory Points.Te easiest thing to remember is that your opponent cangain only a single Victory Point each turn, beginning withthe second turn, and i you deny them that point, the onlyway the opportunity comes to get it back is by extendingthe game. So make sure you deny your opponent theability to get their Strategy. Keep an eye on how they aremoving the models and determine what their plan is. I theStrategy is Reckoning, let the opponent use precious AP onweakening one o your models, then move the model outo harms way beore it can be killed, denying them two killsin the turn. I your opponent has two models earmarkedto grab ur War, use Barbaros to push the model out o themiddle o the board at the end o the turn.

Remember, i you are able to gain a Victory Point rom aStrategy and you deny your opponent the Victory Point thatsame turn, you have a permanent leg up on them in Victory

Points and can orce them to play more aggressively, whichusually leads to more mistakes.

    Deny Scheme Victory Points

Denying Scheme Victory Points is perhaps the hardestpath to Victory. Schemes are, by their nature, very flexible.Your opponent has the option to leave them hidden, soyou dont know which Schemes your opponent will selectwhen picking your crew. Tis provides a difficult challenge

or designing a crew make-up to hinder the opponentsSchemes.

Scheme selections are so varied, that its nearly impossibleto come up with a set path to denying them to youropponents. Instead, it might be easier to look at youropponents Schemes as two additional Schemes o yourown. Lets say your opponent has revealed Make them

Suffer as one o their Schemes. Now you have an additionalScheme to achieve that gives you three points i you keep aMinion or Peon alive at by the end o the game. Reversingthe logic makes it easier to see the path to denying VictoryPoints. I you are running low on minions, run some awayto keep them hidden while your opponent loses out on theVictory Points.

Hidden Schemes are a little harder to counter, but notimpossible. When your opponent hides a Scheme, look

back over the pool o Schemes available. Which o them isable to be hidden? Now deny those Schemes. I Bodyguardis an option, figure out who the Bodyguard targets could beand put wounds on them. Watch the way your opponentmoves and what they are doing. Are they holding modelscloser to their side o the board with Scheme Markers withProtect erritory as an option? Is your opponent rushingmodels towards your side o the board to drop SchemeMarkers with Breakthrough as an option? Do what youcan to disrupt your opponents targets.

    Preparing for the End Game

All games come to an end, ofen with mad scrambling orlast-ditch Victory Points. oo ofen I have seen players whoare in a difficult situation resign themselves to the end othe game without making any preparations, only to findthat the game goes on one additional turn and, had theyset themselves up better, they could have stolen a victory. Iyou are losing the game, play as though the game will go onanother turn. Move your models into position to swing thetide and grab more Victory Points. Set yoursel up so thatyou can grab the Victory Point rom your Strategy youropponent denied you on the second turn. Ready yourselto remove some o your opponents Scheme Markers thatwere abandoned when they assumed the game would endon the fifh turn. So many games are turned rom a loss toa win with that extra turn.

I you are ahead as the fifh turn is coming to a close, donot assume the game is going to end. Position yoursel to

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    24/57 2

protect your lead. Keep your Bodyguarded Henchmanaway rom the fighting. Move your models into position toprotect your Scheme Markers, or drop additional ones toblock your opponent rom denying you points by removingone Scheme Marker. Te game is not over until the lastcard is flipped saying it is over. Play through to the end.

Bringing it All TogetherMaliaux is a complex game involving many intricatemoving parts. I hope over the last two articles you have abetter understanding o how to achieve victory in Maliaux. It requires more than good preparation and good execution.Planning only meets hal o what you need. Achieving thatplan and adapting to the situations that arise during thegame are equally important.

So, next time you pull out your models, think back on what

youve read. Keep your eye on Victory Points and be readyto make sacrifices in exchange or the win. Recognize thedifferent phases o the game, and determine how you willperorm in each o them. A player who wins in three o theour phases will come out the victor.

Now pick up your cards, set up your models, and achievevictory.

    Vacillations with Vassal

I try to play Maliaux as ofen as I can. Tis is, o course, notas ofen as Id like. Real lie gets in the way, an opponent isntalways available, and club night is only once a week. Also,as a Maliaux Henchman, I am ofen duty bound to spendspare gaming hours giving demonstrations and assistingother players honing the champions o tomorrow, i youwill. For that reason, Ive always been intrigued by Vassal,an application that lets one wargame via the internet, andas it so happens, Maliaux has a well-polished module or

the system. Alas, the hobbyist side o me would alwaysprotest when I considered spending precious gaming hourssitting in ront o an LCD screen rather than standing overa proper gaming table embellished with terrain.

Enter Mr. Joel Henry. Joel and I became riends throughMike Marshall, whom I met and played against in theMaliaux Masters at Adepticon 2013, and with whomJoel co-hosts the popular Maliools podcast. Joel has areputation as being one o the top playersi not the top

playerin the UK, and I mysel have been lucky enoughto bring home two Adepticon victories. Unsurprisingly, ariendly rivalry developed between us. We would sharein-game anecdotes, and debate strategies and modelinteractions, but there is only so much one can learn roma Maliaux player away rom the tabletop. Tus I was quickto quell my inner protest when Joel suggested a game overVassal, an easy way to traverse the pesky Atlantic Oceanthat had, so ar, made a game between us impossible. Notto mention, i one is going to put in time to learn a newway o playing, it cant hurt to learn rom one o the best!

Getting the sofware set up was quite easy. I downloadedthe latest core application itsel via http://wwwvassalengine.org/. Ten I loaded up the Maliaux specificmodule available directly rom Wyrd. (http://www.wyrdgames.net/Vassal/Manual/Manual_ToC.html) Afer Iwas all set up on the sofware side, I pinged Joel on witter,he called me via Skype, and we were off!

Te first thing that intrigued me about a Maliaux game

on Vassal was that I wasnt restricted by models I actuallyowned. I was tempted to select a action outside o mycollection, but ultimately decided to keep it simple, stayingwith my tried and true Outcasts. Tat way, I could ocusmy efforts on learning the nuances o the application itselrather than getting to grips with a new action. I wasntsurprised that Joel revealed his beloved Neverborn.

o generate our Strategies and Schemes, we used a handytwitter bot - @MaliauxSchemes. Just start any tweet with

the @MaliauxSchemes handle and randomized strategiesand schemes will be delivered back to you. Tis worksgreat or Vassal, as you can both receive the tweet andreerence it well into the game. It also works great orwriting Battle ReportsI had totally orgotten to writedown the available schemes and ound them by scrollingback through my witter eed!

    Strategy: Reckoning

    Schemes:Entourage, ProtectTerritory, Plant Explosives, Bodyguard

With Reckoning being a lower-scoring strategy, schemes would be paramount. However they werenicely balanced between killing and marker placement,

so they didnt drive crew selection too heavily. I decidedto take advantage o not needing painted minis andtried out two Outcast models I dont happen to own Bishop and the Desperate Mercenary. I also added ina Friekorps Specialist as his marker removal wouldallow me to have an easier time advancing across theboard i Joel decided to place a large number o schememarkers. (Plant Explosives!) I also made an effort toload my crew up with upgrades, figuring that havingewer models would make it tougher or Joel to score

    Deployment

I made my first mistake during deployment it suredidnt take long! Being orced to deploy first, I placedBishop ar on the lef flank in an attempt to use his Swifto regroup towards the center, orming a strong clustero models at midfield and potentially drawing Joel intothe slightly more open lef side o the board. I made arookie Vassal mistake and grossly underestimated thesize o the large building in the lower lef quadrant othe board. It can be very tough to translate what you areused to seeing in 9 square eet o three dimensions intoless than a single square oot o only two dimensions. What I thought would only cost a single turn o hoofingit or Bishop was in act a 22 inch slog that would wastea large chunk o his AP. Joel smartly spread out evenlyacross the map. Waldgeists held the flanks with theireyes on orests to set up in, while Lilith and her nephilim

threatened the center where she would be able to exerther presence over most o the battlefield.

    Neither o us revealed Schemes.

    Turn 1

Neither o us was eager to jump straight into the ray, edgiup cautiously with the exception, o course, o Bishowho realized he had best spend more time on doing cardand less time in the weight room, as he would be spendimost o the day running. A ot even succeeded on a Spraction and opted not to use it, as it was too early yet to s

where the battle would be joined. In an effort to distraJoel a bit, I tossed a desperate Mercenary into the woonear the center. Te ploy was to trade pieces with Joel i opted to angle Shadows on him, as whichever Neverbomodel was transposed would be stuck in the woods in roo the cover-ignoring Specialist and the Viktorias. Jospotted that my positioning was off, and my Specialist win act too close, so he took decisive action, moving Liliorward and activating a 12 aura on her (Ctrl + F2 vehandy!) to show that the edge o the Specialists base w

just in range or him to be swapped to his doom! Lilsent her servant, Barbaros, deep into my lines and placan illusionary orest in ront o the Viktorias to stymtheir revenge. Finishing her strong turn one, she smote tSpecialist with her blade, bringing him near death. Barbar

took an idle slash at tMercenary he had startland then hastily attemptto regroup towards tcenter and prepare hdeense.

    Turn 2

Tanks to Joels aggressive turn one advance, the turn two initiative flip was crucial. Even with a Soulstone, I ailedto beat Joels flip, and he promptly used Barbaross Nimble to set up a devastating charge on the Specialist killinghim and pushing his corpse with a trigger so that the tank explosion was ineffective. I used the Specialists OathKeeper to drop a scheme marker in base, but in my attempt to see i I could peg Lilith and Barbaros within 3 othat scheme marker by putting it on the near side o the base, I may have tipped my hand towards Plant Explosives(Tey werent within 3 Doh!)

Afer a rough start to the turn the Student mustered her courage and placed Assist on the Viktoria o Blood, settingup a strong retaliation i the Neverborn attempted to advance urther. Te Waldgeists crept orward, huggingterrain and while creating more o their own. Bishop burnt yet another activation practicing or an upcoming 10Kcharity un run, but was now finally near the center. Te error ots made an attempt to advance urther, but nottoo ar, as the Convict Gunslinger had advanced to ully cover my lef flank, and the Viktoria o Blood had a zealouslook in her eye.

Joel continued through with his plan to off both o my wounded models, and used Lilith to angle Shadowsbetween the Desperate Mercenary and the Mature Nephilim, slaughtering the hapless Mercenary and scoring thefirst point o the game. Tis put the Mature Nephilim in melee with Bishop, which surprised me that Joel would ti

up such a lynchpin model with my best tar pit when the primordial magic was also a valid target. Ten I realizedthat the totem was also a mobile scheme marker. Hrm maybe I wasnt the only one trying to plant explosivesBishop was able to end off the beastly Nephilim with his cage fighting skills, but unortunately his Ripostes wercountered as the black ichor oozing rom the Mature also served to wound him urther.

Te Viktoria o Ashes could eel her sisters rage, and decided that a bold move was needed to turn the tide sheadvanced boldly, pulling Blood along with her and setting her up to launch into the ray. Her attempt at a longrange shot at Lilith missed. Blood Vik dutiully charged the error ot, offing him with one blow, and then used heFast AP to engage the Waldgeist and swing yet again. Unortunately this attack missed, oiling my plan o havinga wounded Waldgeist to finish off the ollowing turn but it elt good to finally have killed a model none-the-less

    Turn 3

As ofen happens in Reckoning, the game climaxed on turn three. Tis time I top-decked a 12 or initiative, andJoel saved his Soulstones or the coming onslaught. Te Viktorias immediately leapt into action, but unortunatelyonly to stumble. Viktoria o Ashes started the turn casting Sisters o Battle so that her doppleganger siblingcould kill the Waldgeist in a single blow. o finish her turn she advanced to take another pot-shot at Lilith, whichagain missed. What she didnt realize was that she had gotten way too close to her sister again, I was misjudgingdistances in the Vassal interace stripping the Viktoria o Blood o a plus flip to damage. My plan o using the

severe card in my hand to finish the Waldgeist in a single blow, advancing to then engage the primordial magic andeasily killing it with my Sword Viktoria which would score a point or the strategy and save me rom the likelyexplosion was thusly oiled. Feeling a bit annoyed at her thoughtless sibling, the Blood Viktoria finished off theWaldgeist and dropped a scheme marker unable to thwart the enemy as shed hoped.

Te bulk o my offensive having proved ineffective, Joel activated the Mature Nephilim utilizing the cards hehadnt needed or deense, to rip Bishop in hal. Te Convict Gunslinger knew his shots would be less effectivethrough cover and decided to charge the Waldgeist, but flipped poorly and even his point-blank shots glanced offo the armored fiend. Lilith jammed up the Viktorias yet again with an Illusionary Forest and then opted to diverther attention to the lef flank. She sped off to slaughter the Convict Gunslinger, scoring Reckoning. At this pointI was out o useul activations, so I advanced the Student o Conflict within assisting range o my master, so thatI could take one last ditch effort next turn. O course I yet again misjudged distances, and lef the Student justwithin 7 o the Viktoria o Blood, so the Primordial Magic floated up and nonchalantly exploded on the triad osisters or a ull 3 VP. Ouch!

    Turn 4

As predicted the game swung decisively on turn three, so it was now a battle or margin o victory, and Joel quicklytried to wrap up as many VPs as possible.

Lilith started the turn by promptly fleeing towards my deployment zone so Entourage afer all then! I activatedthe Student first, giving my master Fast, but orgot to mark it on her. No excuse, as a quick tap o the F key wouldhave done so! Te Mature Nephilim lumbered back towards the center o the board to enable him to potentially

help earn a third reckoning point on turn five. Te Viktoria o Ashes advanced across the board as well, not asaggressively as Lilith, as she had orgotten she was in act Fast, but still ar enough to tip off Joel that I likely hadEntourage as well. (I did.) Barbaros made a heroic attempt to kill the Viktoria o Blood and prove his martialprowess to his brood mother, but lef her on a single wound remaining and was easily slaughtered by her in return.Sensing that more discretion was warranted, the Waldgeist summoned severe terrain in ront o Blood Vik to slowdown her murderous rampage.

    End of Turn 4

    Turn 5

With my Master unhurt and only inches rom the enemy deployment zone, I figured Id at least be able to score myown Entourage. Te Mature Nephilim attempted to thwart me by making a last ditch charge at the Viktoria. Sheused a Soulstone to mitigate the first attack and another to reduce the damage to only one. However her deenseailed when the Black Joker reared its ugly head on the second swing and no amount o precious souls could saveher.

Having had my other plans to score all apart on me, I used the Viktoria o Blood to drop some dynamite omy own and scored two points or Plant Explosives. Te flip or a sixth turn merciully came up short, and Joelsecured a crushing victory, 8-2.

    End of Turn 5

    Final Thoughts

Although some misplacement o models on my part allowed Joel to swifly turn the game in his avor, it was still awell ought and entertaining match. We finished the game in just over two hours - not bad, as Joel had to help mefigure out the controls a ew times. All in all it was a great experience, and the taste o bitter deeat has only lef mehungry to overcome my beginners mistakes in the Vassal interace. All the tools are available to assist the player

in overcoming the sizing and placement challenges it is simply a matter o getting amiliar enough to know whatto use and when. Te opportunity to see a antastic player rom another continent adeptly plan and execute hisstrategy was a pleasure. It was also great un to use models I dont yet own. I especially look orward to using theVassal interace to get in more games or the Wave 2 Beta playtest, as it has no problem creating models which donot yet exist. It will also be a great chance to test my combinations and opinions against players outside my localplaygroup. Even in a diverse group such as my own, groupthink is still a threat!

    Closing

In summary, Vassal is a great way to get a taste o Maliaux action when the table top just isnt practical. I youancy a game on Vassal or just want to talk shop, eel ree to reach out to me on witter @Guy_In_Suit. Id sayto look up Joel or a Vassal game as well, but only i you want a thorough smashing!

The Good, the Bad and the Mercenary

    Professor Pontificates

By Adrian ScottMercenaries have always been a key part o the Maliauxlore. From Viktorias initial employment that led herthrough Te Breach, to Von Schills Freikorps enterprise,or even aras ill-ated meeting with Oblivion, theyveofen been a key element in more than just a ew o theplot lines that thread throughout Maliaux.

However when it comes to the game itsel, mercenariesseem to get looked over. Many players instead preer to

stick with their in-action crew choices. While theresnothing particularly wrong with such an approach, Ieel that by excluding mercenaries, players are missingan opportunity to include not only some solid dynamicchoices to their crew, but theyre denying the chanceto include some characters who are resplendent inpersonality.

One o the main reasons people seem to avoidconsidering mercenaries is a desire to keep their crew

in theme. Tis is something I can certainly empathizewith. Whether its or aesthetic reasons or or somestrong gameplay synergies, there tends to be goodreasons to stick with the models that fit the crews theme.Fortunately the aesthetic part is easily fixed its notofen that hard to make a mercenary look as though heor shes part o the crew, whether its through a matchingpaint scheme, basing, or even a bit o converting. Oneo my first mercenaries was a convict gunslinger, and toensure he fit in with my Pandora crew, I painted up hisguns as i they were toy cap guns (complete with orange

saety tips) and modeled a night cap onto his head. Evenan upgrade can help a Mercenary fit into your crewbetter or instance I ofen give the Pact upgrade tomy above-mentioned convict gunslinger to help him fitinto my Neverborn crews.

From a gameplay perspective however, rigidly adheringto a crews theme will ofen create in-built weaknessesFor instance, an all-Nephilim Lilith crew has almost

no ranged attack options and limited resilience, whilemany Guild crews lack a way to deal Wp-based attacksor whatever else might be needed to get around highD models. I nothing else, mercenaries can offer away to plug those weaknesses in your crew. Almost allmercenaries have some kind o trick or playstyle thatis unique to them, or at least in limited availability toother crews. So, whatever your crew might be lackingthere is ofen a mercenary whose talents can plug thathole.

Te other big reason people seem to avoid takingmercenaries, is the 1SS premium you pay or hiringone. While many would view it as pushing a decentvalue model into the realms o being over-costed, Ivealways elt that the premium you pay is well worththe opportunity to add something your crew couldnot otherwise achieve. In any case, Id be surprised imany games were lost because a player spent that extrasoulstone on unlocking a mercenary.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    33/57 3

I nothing else however, most mercenaries are just oozingwith personality. With a ew exceptions, they are notjust some nameless odder or unthinking automation theyre individuals with their own personality andbackstory. At least to me, that makes it a little more unwhen its Johan, rather than anonymous Punk Zombie#2, who finally lands the killing bow on that thrice-accursed Mature Nephilim.

I hope this has given you a resh perspective on thevalue o taking mercenaries in your crews. Beore Ifinish however, I thought Id go through a ew avouritemercenaries o mine rom Wave 1. Tese certainly arentthe only mercenaries worth taking, but hopeully it willgive you some ideas on how these and other modelswould fit into your crew.

    Until next time,

    Adrian

    Malifaux Child

Once arguably the worst model in Maliaux, the

Maliaux Child is now not only useul, but actuallyquite good in the right circumstances. Disguisedand Manipulative 15 make the child a lot o troubleto kill or such a cheap peon, and the healing liprom Misplaced rust can help keep other memberso your crew in the ight. But the real gem in theMaliaux Childs talents is his ability to use Just likeyou! to copy one o your Leaders Ca actions, muchlike a cheap and dirty version o Hannahs Makea New Entry. Depending on what spell you pick, this not only allows you to ree up an AP on yourmaster to do something else, but also lets you targeta model or area that your master is out o positionto target him or hersel. he reduced Ca makes ittougher to successully cast on an enemy modelthough, which is why Ive oten stuck with usingspells that can target riendly models, like Obey.hat said, using such a cheap model to copy a potentenough oensive spell can make it worth the eort, especially i you use a Focus action to mitigate theusual negative twist to damage rom Just like you.

    Johan

Much like his more expensive counterpart aelorJohans Relic Hammer allows him to pack a seriouspunch in melee, especially i you can get him intoposition to use Flurry against a single model. hepush eect rom Knock Back allows or some neatpositioning tricks (especially with Pounce-heavy

crews) and Finish the Job is always a great abilityor getting Scheme Markers where you need them.Johans ability to remove conditions with Rebel Yellmakes him useul in any crew. Whether its BurningParalyze or any number o others, almost every crewtends to utilize conditions o some kind. Having amodel that can remove these conditions rom keymodels in your own crew can thereore be a greatboon.

heres no doubt that Johan is a great choice inany crew that includes other M&SU models, withSolidarity and Open Revolt helping to improve bothhimsel, and the other M&SU members aroundhim. But that doesnt mean Johan should only everbe taken i you can pair him with M&SU models Ive ound that hes still a very potent and lexiblepackage in any crew you care to take him with.

    Freikorps Specialist

Its a dude with a lamethrower. How could anyonesay no!?

As a shooting model who hands out the burningcondition like candy (even when he dieskaboom!),the Specialist is most obviously useul in crews whocan take advantage o that, like Sonnia or KaerisHowever hes still a great choice in any other crewHis Flamenwerer is very eective against groups oenemy models, ignores cover, and has two triggersthat add damage in the orm o Burning or orceHorror duels. he third trigger, Wildire, lets theSpecialist remove all scheme markers within 4 othe target, which in itsel is a antastic trick to havewhen your opponent needs those scheme markersto claim some VPs. His Clear the Area ability alsoallows him to very easily remove nearby corpse andscrap counters, which is very handy against the rightcrews (you know which ones!). Finally, theres Moveor Burn. Slow and especially Paralyzed are two othe most rustrating conditions your opponent

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    34/57

can put on your own models. So having an actionto remove them, even i it costs a wound, is veryuseul. his should also prove handy in summon-heavy crews, since you can use the specialist toremove the slow condition rom a horde o reshlysummoned models!

    Hans

he Convict Gunslinger might be the go-tomercenary or pure ranged damage output, butHans is the model o choice i you want a sniper. And what a sniper he is! Hans Sniper Rile has asolid damage spread and the usual crazy across-the-table range while Focused that youd expect rom asniper, but he also has a great set o triggers, madeeasier to get thanks to his Reerence the Field Guide(0) action. hese triggers allow him to either get

around enemy deenses (speciically Armor andIncorporeal) or neutralize the target with eitherslow or even disarm, to prevent them making meleeattacks altogether. Hes the only model in the gamewho can actually remove upgrades rom othermodels, thanks to Smile, You Son o a. his is lesseective against Leaders (thanks to o the HighestBidder), but it still makes him one o the most painin the arse models you could ace in a game. Finallyi all this wasnt enough, Hans can ignore auras, pulses, Markers that aect line o sight, and perhaps

most critically, can shoot into melee without havingto randomize targets. his last eature makes Hansa great choice not just in ranged-heavy crews, butor melee crews as well, where other shooters wouldind themselves much less useul.

    Killjoy

He may be expensive, but Killjoy is absolutely worthevery one o his 12+1 soulstones. On the ace o itKilljoy is a resilient melee monster. he (1) actioncharge rom Blood Price and a Cleaver with both theOnslaught trigger AND a righteningly high damagespread, enable him to annihilate almost any modelin the game in one activation. With 12 Woundsand the ability to heal a lot o thosewounds every activation, hes verydiicult to take down without aconcerted eort by youropponent. But perhapshis best eature is his

Blood Sacriice ability, which allows Killjoy to startthe game buried, and enter play whenever one oyour models is killed. his completely alters howboth you and your opponent play the game. Notonly can you pop Killjoy up when and whereveryou need him most, but it orces your opponentto second guess heirsel every time he or shesabout to kill one o your models. Is the death o that

model really worth a vengeul Killjoy to the aceor do they delay killing certain models in the hopethat youll be orced to unbury him in a less thanideal position? Consider that, and youll begin tounderstand why Killjoy isnt just an expensive beat-stick. Killjoy is a tactic.

    Oiran

I I had to pick my avourite action or ability in the

game, I would say it was Lure. Whether its pullingyour own models out o danger, pushing youropponents models into the waiting arms o your owncrew, or simply some out-o-activation positioningor achieving/denying objectives, Lure oers a hugerange o tactical options. he Oirans Lure mayrequire a suit to cast, but its still a powerul spellthat makes her well worth considering in a crew. Inaddition, the +1 Wp aura rom Appealing can be veryhandy against crews with lots o Wp-based attacksand with a bit o luck and smart positioning, her

    (2) Assassins Git attack can deal quite a lot odamage with the additional strikes rom itsautomatic Flutter trigger.

errain is always an investment. You have to investmoney in materials, time to construct it, and space tostore it. It is handy when you are able to find a wayto make one piece o terrain unction in multiple ways;that way you get the most use and play time out o yourinvestment.

In this article I will be describing how I made someuniversal wall sections that can be used in interesting

    ways on the table.

Once put together, these durable and simple-to-maketerrain pieces make a set that can be arranged side byside in a line to make a wall.

You can also mix and match these ideas to makevariations and designs to suit your own needs.

    By David Herbert

How to build modular wall sections

    Versatile Walls

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    36/57 3

Te materials required to make these wall sectionsare airly inexpensive and can be bought rom mosthardware stores. I purchased a large (1200mm x600mm) sheet o 9mm MDF and a ew tubes o aconstruction grade adhesive or less than $15. A jig sawwill also be required or this job, and I recommend anelectric one, as they obliterate the time investment andcan be picked up at reasonable prices.

A steal ruler and a set square will also prove to beinvaluable tools or scribing the plans onto the MDF.

Te sets I made were designed to also be compatiblewith other table top games and, as such, were built tofit completely within a 10cm square. Tis resulted in

one more cut and some different dimensions, but planswill be supplied or both the regular and large wallsections. I you dont have any real need or the smallersize I would recommend building the ull sized walls asit is easier and less time consuming.

Tese sections are made out o 4 pieces and can be cutrom the board in an economical ashion to minimisewaste as shown below.

Te plan can just be repeated over and over along astraight edge with care taken to leave a ew millimetresor the saw to cut through (lef grey on the plans). Iyou do not actor in the ker o your saw (that is thesize o the space that is cut away by the teeth o the sawblade), your measurements will be off. While this canbe worked around it is ar easier to allow 2 to 3 mm ora jigsaw ker, as seen in the ollowing photograph.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    37/57 3

No allowance or the ker was made on the diagonalpart o the wall sides. Tey did not attach to anythinga high degree o accuracy was required or. It is alsoa very good idea to label all o your parts beore youbegin to cut, as it makes sorting the parts easier later. Iwould highly recommend numbering your sets too sothat the top, sides, and ront o the first set would all benumbered with a 1. What saety gear you wear is up to

your discretion, but it is highly advisable to wear saetyglasses and some sort o dust mask. Jig saws are notvery loud so hearing protection may not be required.Te cutting process is also going to make a air amounto saw dust, so plan a suitable area to work.

When cutting through or the first run o parts rememberto cut with your blade on the outside edge o the planto once again maintain accurate measurements. I youhave trouble cutting straight, look at clamping a piece o

wood to your MDF to act as a guide.

Once all o the pieces have been cut, it may also bea good idea to give the edges a quick rub with somesand paper or a power sander i you have one. Tiswill help to tidy up and fluffy bits. Te next step is toget organised and ready to glue, because once you getstarted you will need to move quickly. A ew off cuts orpopsticks are also a great resource and help you avoidwiping off excess glue with your fingers, a practice thatis not only messy and uncomortable, but also possiblydangerous.

Just beore you head off and get to gluing these partstogether, it is good ideas to do a dry run with each set,and check that they match up; marking off the heightyou want the top ledge to sit at. I just used the width o

my ruler as when I held it up to a model it looked right.est it out with your models and make a decision thatsuits your scale tastes.

Apply the glue careully along the edges and rememberthat with construction adhesives, a little goes a longway. o avoid goo oozing everywhere try to keep ittame. Since the top ledge is going to be a load bearing

part o the wall, I decided to add a little extra aroundthe underside where it would be out o sight and nearlyinvisible once painted.

  • 8/11/2019 Wyrd Chronicles Volume9 (1)

    38/57 3

Once the adhesive is tacky, but still pliable enough tomake small adjustments, help combat gravity, by layingeach section down and check the position o each ledge.o add texture to the walls, coat them in a watereddown PVA mixture and sprinkle sand over them. Tisis also a good way to disguise and hide any little gaps ordeects.

Due to the expensive nature o spray paints I optedor the cheap poster paints that you can buy in bulk.Using the largest brush possible, I undercoated themblack beore using a light grey/blue or dry brushing.Te paint job here was not a eature, so I did not investmuch time in it.

When it comes to adding doors you can try cuttingthem out to a size that suits your taste in scale, althoughthis can be rather tricky and requires a drill with a largediameter drill bit. A much easier option is to searchon the internet or some doors that you like, printthem off and glue them on. I used Google Images witha search or door textures and then resized them in aWord document. o do this make a rectangle with auto

shapes, right click on it and set its size properties tothe desired width and length. Ten, using the shapefill unction, select picture, and then the file o the doortexture you chose.

Tese can then be glued on any part o the wall youdesire to have a door using PVA.

One o the reasons I chose to put a door on the sideo the wall instead o the ront, was so that it could be

hidden i I wanted to make a wall instead o a tower. As a set o terrain these pieces are not only visuallyeffective, but also make or some great rules interactionsand game moments. Used either all together or inpieces, as walls or towers, to make orts, or even aruined battlement o some sort, I am sure that the smallamount o time, money, and effort required to makethese versatile wall sections is worth it.

Since its December, I couldnt really resist having thenew plastic Ice Golem as a painting guide. Te golemhimsel is airly simple as paint schemes go, beingentirely one material (ice). Rather than getting over-ussy and trying to squeeze bits o reehand and suchonto what is a airly well detailed model, Ive gone alittle bit nuts with the base instead. While it may lookcomplex its all airly simple small steps, honest. As

always with my stuff, Im using Vallejo Game Colourpaints or the most part, with the occasional VallejoModel Colour (VMC) and Vallejo Model Air (VMA)that Ill mention each time.

I decided to have him standing part on a mountain andpart on a rozen lake, so I could have ice around him asa nod to the original Wyrd Chronicles painting article, but that wasnt quite dramatic enough or my liking.Te golem is a real behemoth now, and I wanted himto be expressing that (3) Smash attack o his in the final

piece. I eventually realised hed have to be smashing theice with his fist to give him the look o raw power I wasafer, which meant a couple o posing tweaks and someexper
