The censorship of books was one of the phases of book selection considered by Miss Virginia Kirk-
] us, well known book reviewer, in a talk on "What's New in Books?" nt the Suffolk County Library Association Institute last Wednesday at the Patchogue Library. Her criterion for public library purchase of a book is demand, worth and availability to the patron. Miss Kirkus discussed present as well as future best sellers.
Miss Mary I/JU l>aas of the art library staff in I lie Donne)] Library center followed with an interesting talk on "Library Displays*'
; She stressed the importance of ; avoiding monotony by using con j trast in color and form. These two
suggestions tic in very closely with the storm raised in Alabama over a beautiful children's picture book by Garth Williams entitled "The Rabbits' Wedding."
The Alabama Sta-te Library has withdrawn this book from the shelves because of the possibility that there may be a social significance in the marriage of a black rabbit and a white rabbit. Mr. Wi! Hams, the author artist, has countered with the statement that he did not know that animals had Hie same blood redalions us humans;
also his only reason for the differ ence in color was for the pictorial reason of contrast. Few people realize that artists of children'? books must limit the colors user' in pictures because of the expen sivc lithographic color processc entailed. 'Wc have placed the bool on display so that all may deeid' whether it is innocuous or a socia problem.
Other S. C. L. A. Institute speak ers on Wednesday were Dr. Ftalp) Shaw. Rutgers' Graduate fichoo Library Director, whose topic wa "Scientific Management of thr Library" and Daniel Pogano froir •he Albany office of audit and con trol who discussed "Retiremen' and Social Security." Mrs. S. i) Silvcrberg spoke after the dinne-held at the Patchogue Hotel on the "Responsibility of the Libran Trustees."
Miss Margaret Loughlin, Mis.« Marlenc Ward and Mrs liai'f rep resented our library, the Misses Mabel Chambers and Carolyn Dow the Sayville Public Schools; Mrs Henry Rogers, the William Floy School; and. David King, Sachem Schools, About 150 people attended at least pari of the gathering.
