2 Suffolk Men Die
In Elkton Disaster " Elkton, Md.—Two Suffolk re
sidents were crew members in the ill-fated jet liner which crashed near here Sunday night while enroute from San Juan, P. R. to Philadelphia. The Pan American World Airways Boeing 707 went down in flames in a cornfield during a thunder storm at 8:58 p. m. Eighty-two persons, including all crew members, were killed.
CapL George Knuth of Huntington Station and Flight Engineer R. J. Kantlehner of Brent-, wood were listed among the"*-dead by airline officials.
The youths were-caught at midnight Monday by Robert Kilthau of the Department of Conservation. They were released in $200 bail each and appeared Tuesday in Brookhaven Justice Court in Patchogue.

any connection with water pipes.
Once the bicycle railroad had arrived and been mounted on its monorail a series of test runs was begun. Saies oi stocs increased rapidly when the train demonstrated that it could indeed reach speeds of 60 miles an hour during the two-mile run. A free ride frequently was the clincher as a tnnlled passenger stepped down to eagerly purchase a block of stock and receive an ornate certificate.
However, that was the extent of the company's operation. Before the year's end the whole thing had folded. The buildings were sold at auction and hauled away. No dividends were ever paid and none of the outstanding shares were ever redeemed. Some few of the stables are said still to serve as garages in and around Patchogue. The hydrants made cordwood for the few unfortunates who had completed their homes before the bubble burst. These families stayed on and became the founders of what people then s o m e w h a t derisively called Boomertown, but what is now a part of Hagerman. In November of 1902, at a sale of the company's assets, the purchaser was John Koe Smith, Patchogue real estate man.
Although the Bicycle Railroad was an unfortunate investment for a great number of Long Is-' landers, the promoters were never formally charged with illegal practices. As a perhaps fitting but somehow sad ending, the Rocket was shipped to Coney Island for exhibition purposes. Tolls Caused "Shunpike"
In the old days the toll roads of Long Island often caused people to take a detour in order to avoid paying the toil. The stretch of road they utilized was referred to locally as a "shunpike." Where there was a toll road, in almost every case there was also a route by which a person or vehicle could bypass the toll house but return to the main road at some point beyond the loll^collcctor.
The short bypass was a "shunpike" and the cheapskates who went to the trouble of utilizing the detours were called "shunpikers". We have heard it said that the word "piker" is derived from all of this. Could be.
