Pattern: I;IDefined: Two complete sentences, related closely in topic, side-by-side for emphasis

Example:

Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, was enemies

with witches of the East and West; she became Dorothy’s ally against the Wicked Witch of the West.

Practice- 10 minutes

• Write an I;I pattern sentence about Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West

• Write an I;I pattern sentence about Dorothy and Mrs. Gulch and Toto back in Kansas.

• Share with a neighbor and edit for the following: -2 complete sentences

-Semi-colon used between them -Spelling and grammar errors are fixed

Example:

Pattern: D, IDefined: Word or phrase which either introduces or gives information about the sentence to follow. A comma MUST be used to separate them.

Example: D=With an explosion of flame, [NOT A SENTENCE]I= the Wicked Witch of the West disappeared. [SENTENCE]

With an explosion of flame, the Wicked Witch of the West disappeared.

Example: Since the roads are covered with ice, the county is sending out the sand and salt trucks.

Example: Although I love her dearly, her laugh drives me crazy!

Example: I= the Wicked Witch of the West disappeared. [SENTENCE]D=With an explosion of flame [NOT A SENTENCE]

The Wicked Witch of the West disappeared with an explosion of flame. NO COMMA SHOULD BE USED

Nouns

Define a noun:

A pronoun replaces a noun to simplify writing and to avoid over-use of a noun’s name

Adjectives

Adjectives: What do they do? They describe nouns and pronouns.What questions do they answer? They answer the following questions: What kind? Which one? How many? How much?
