I think we've all had enough of the cold east wind, especially since the weather charts have forecast warm sunshine almost everywhere else. Rainfall this spring has been extremely low, just at a time when drilling and planting is at its busiest. Many crops need a good soak to start them off.

After such a beginning to the year I think we deserve a spell of good weather for the Wrangle Show, which is to take place on Sunday 2nd July. Planning and arrangements started soon after last year's event, and a lot of work will go into setting up this year's. Please try to support the show which is, after all, the best of its kind in the area by far. A successful show is a just reward for the committee's efforts. Any additional help is always welcome.

Shortly after this publication comes out we have the General Election. It is always important to cast your vote, whichever party you choose.

A cuckoo was seen flying over our woodland, on Sunday 7th May, I'm hoping to hear one calling soon. We could hear them all the time, as youngsters. Sadly they are becoming quite rare now. Hopefully we'll have turtle doves back on the farm, after two years without any.

George Danby.

From the desk of your Vicar…

I am going to mention the Christmas Story – even though it is June!! Whether you like to take the Christmas Story told in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew literally, or as a metaphor for a great and deep truth, you are faced with one of our formative stories which has our Messiah (on whom our salvation rests) when he is only a toddler becoming a refugee along with his Mother and Father. The family are fleeing a tyrant who has ordered the death of all children below a certain age, which would include the baby Jesus. Another country took them in and so Jesus was able to grow up…

Jesus may have hardly remembered the hurried fleeing and the dangerous journey, but as a grown man he taught that the vulnerable were to be looked after and a stranger clothed, fed and cared for. He never qualified his instructions to make it the ‘deserving’ poor or the innocent prisoner that was helped or visited. He and his followers were to be generous and open handed – after all God had freely given to them.

We have so much more than the ordinary first century peasant – we have freely and richly received – Christians are called to freely give from their abundance.

We need a Christian voice calling on the world to take in those who so desperately need a fresh start – we cannot begin to imagine the horrors that forced families to leave all they had previously cherished and take only each other and what they could carry to try to find a safe place, a place that could be home at least for a little while.

Our hearts go out to the displaced, let us be prepared to help them find safety and to welcome them.

May God richly bless you

Reverend Fiona

Joyous June

Slowly, silently, summer descends; sun-hats and sun-cream, walking with friends.

Swiftly, noisily, the sea-side crowd devour ice-creams -midst music, so loud!

Softly, gently, the summer rain cleanses the world. Peace reigns again.

Sparkling merrily, the meandering stream, flows through valleys, where lovers still dream.

Sweet-scented flowers of every hue, nod their heads wisely; heavy with dew.

Songs heard bring memories of summers long gone; this summer’s magic goes on and on... c Annette Borrill

The Annual Parish Meeting was held on 02 May 2017 at the Parish Hall where the Chairman, Cllr G Danby , gave the following report:

It’s been an interesting year, and one in which we have seen a number of changes, principally due to revenue saving moves by higher authorities. The County Council has informed us that the road verges will only be cut twice this year. The Parish Paths Partnership ceased in 2016 and we have agreed to fund public footpath cutting ourselves.

We have had our Council minutes from May 2012 to April 2016 professionally bound.

After many years of negotiation Cockle Alley was designated as a Bridal Way and, at last, was opened up for public use.

Our interactive sign is operating on the Main Road and, finally, we can now get a good feel for the way the speed limit is being observed.

The police never attend our meetings now and reports are sent by email, though these are becoming intermittent.

The Community Orchard didn’t produce any fruit last year and a special fertilizer has been applied this spring which, hopefully, will help put things right.

The trees at the Playing field were professionally surveyed. Ivy was cut back by our Handyman, who continues to help keep the village looking presentable.

My compliments to the Show Committee and helpers on production of another excellent and popular event.

As usual a wreath was laid at the war memorial on Remembrance Sunday.

The annual S137 grants were awarded to village organisations.

The Play Area continues to be well used and is in good order. We have applied for a grant, from the East Coast Community Fund, towards the cost of installing five items of Well Being equipment, adjacent to the Play Area.

Under the Borough Council’s Transformation Project we have agreed to fund the 74 footway lights. These will be switched off at midnight, until 6 am. The Parish Council will pay the cost of fitting photo/timer cells, which will result in a saving of 55% of the running costs, with a payback in just over 2 years. The alternative would be to have the lights turned off permanently.

Also under this project we now have to fund Parish Council elections and by-elections.

The Council provided commemorative medals, for all the children, to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The saga of the land, at Washdyke Lane rumbles on, hopefully not for too much longer.

The Boston Marathon, held recently, is growing in popularity with many runners, including some internationals, passing in and out of our village. This is probably the flattest course for a marathon and attracts good runners because they achieve such good times. Having said that, its longevity cannot be guaranteed since our roads are deteriorating fast and, without extensive improvements, many will become impassable.

We are indebted to our District and County Councillors for their attendance at most of our meetings, and for their advice.

My thanks to everyone who helps with the smooth running of the Council: To Tony Wright for his monthly road reports, to Teddy, our clerk, for the efficient way she approaches the job, including maintaining the website, setting out the magazine and collecting the data from the interactive sign. To Pearl Danby, editor of the magazine, who deals with adverts and distribution.

Finally, thanks to Bryan Bowles, my vice chairman for his support, and to all members for your efforts and attendance throughout the year.

This meeting was followed by the Annual Parish Council Meeting where Cllr Danby was elected Chairman and Cllr Bowles

elected Vice-chairman until May 2018.

The Parish Council Standing Orders (rules by which the Parish

Council is run) were checked and no changes were made. Other policies have been checked throughout the year.

Parish Councillors were nominated to represent the Parish Council on other committees and to make up the Parish Council

Committees.

The ordinary Parish Council meeting followed this one.

HISTORY OF LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society's rich history began in 1869. For over 125 years the Society has dedicated itself to promoting food, farming and the countryside through events such as the Lincolnshire Show.

The first event the Society held was The Lincoln Show on 29th, 30th and 31st July 1869 with highlights including poultry, pigeons, seeds and roots! The first Show ran with 13 Stewards, and now we rely on the fantastic team of 200 who can be easily spotted at the Show as the men wear bowler hats and the ladies wear straw hats.

Before the Show settled at the Showground, it travelled the county stopping at towns such as Scunthorpe, Bourn, Skegness, Brocklesby, Louth and lots more.

The 76th Show, in 1959, was the first at the Lincolnshire Showground, after much debate the site was deemed perfect with ample space for stands, a Members enclosure and separate public and stock entrances, warranting the entrance price to double to 10 shillings.

The Lincolnshire Show has been running for over 100 years, but stopped only because of World War 2, and the spread of Foot and Mouth. In the absence of the County Show in 2001, the Society planned the 'Lincolnshire Food and Gift Fair', an event that has flourished over the past decade and still runs today.

We're very proud to say that the Show continues to be one of the most successful agricultural Shows still running with 60,000 visitors, including 3,500 Members and over 600 trade stands. Here's to another 133 years!
