Renowned company Dragon Breath Theatre and Curve bring their brand new stage version of Jonathan Swift’s classic novel Gulliver’s Travels on tour.

The production, which is aimed at families and school children aged nine and upwards, tells the tale of Gulliver, who, upon setting sail for the south

seas, gets blown of course and finds himself in an strange new world where he is a giant. Making friends (and enemies) along the way, Gulliver’s adventures take him to many lands where he discovers a flying island, a land of giants and a place that is ruled by beautiful, civilised horses. But having been

changed by these experiences, can Gulliver ever return to the world he left behind?

Gulliver’s Travels, by award-winning writer Peter Rumney, is a visual and musical feast of storytelling, puppetry and drama. Dragon Breath Theatre are well-known for their epic visual style and the special way

that they create work by and for young people. The company work with children, teachers, artists and scientists to develop new plays over a period of many months, which result in productions that reflect young people’s experiences and views of the world.

The show is also part of an education programme which focuses on ideas of transition and change, asking the question: what does it feel like to be a powerful giant one day and a tiny plaything the next. School audiences are invited to special school days which include tickets for the performance in the morning with free workshops, led by the company, in the afternoon. The workshops explore themes of transition, citizenship and literacy and are most suitable for school years 5 to 7.

A great production for children making the change from primary to secondary education, Gulliver’s Travels is a funny, insightful and powerful play for the family to enjoy.

Fri 1 - Sat 30 JuneWhat do the price of 17th century Dutch tulips and the current global economic meltdown have in common? They are both classic examples of financial bubbles bursting which are being brought together by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Stan’s Cafe for an intriguing new play, The Just Price of Flowers.

And appropriately, in these times of austerity, the play will feature recycled sets, costumes and props made out of origami.

The Just Price of Flowers brings the complexities of high finance to life in a remarkably straightforward and humorous way. In 17th century Holland a passion - bordering on

madness - developed for tulips. Their price rose so rapidly that people saw the chance to make a killing through speculative

But in 1637 this financial bubble burst. Sound familiar?

Using Tulipmania as its inspiration, The Just Price of Flowers, finds the Van Leasings buying a tulip from Van Eek, using money borrowed from Van Hire. It follows them as they chase their dream of wealth through the growing complexities of futures trading, credit ratings, sub-primes, credit default swaps, and the horror of short selling.

Amongst their musical inventions is a xylophone constructed from light bulbs, and a musical ‘Cloud Chamber’ made out of Pyrex dishes. Signed to Mike Skinner’s record label, Man Like Me is one of the most hotly tipped acts around. Their highly energetic mix of vibrant beats, cheap synths and strange sounds is intoxicating. Enjoyable Tales

Best known for his five popular autobiographical Dales books, Gervase has received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, becoming a regular radio and TV personality.

Tickets are priced at £17, concessions £15, and are available by calling the Ticket Office on 01536 470 470 or online at www.thecorecorby.com.

THURSDAY 28 JUNE The Core at Corby

Cube welcomes raconteur extraordinaire Gervase Phinn on Thursday 28 June, sharing his hilarious and poignant tales of life as a school inspector in the Yorkshire Dales.

With his keen ear for the absurd and sharp eye for the ludicrous, the best-selling and award-winning author regales audiences with stories of bizarre teachings and frank-talking children in a warm and witty manner which has seen him dubbed ‘the James Herriot of education’.

The Man of 10,000 Voices

Air Force Base, Michael would imitate the airplane noises and jet engines and soon he was on stage at Tulagi’s, Colorado, where Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and various other famous bands had played. Michael was discovered after moving to LA to perform in the local comedy clubs, and when Bud Friedman featured him in the famous Evening at the Improv, producers Hugh Wilson and Paul Manslanski witnessed his talent and immediately wrote him into the script of the unforgettable Police Academy movies.

A star was born, and Michael

went on to provide the voice of Stripe in Stephen Spielberg’s Gremlins, and to star in National Lampoon’s Robo Doc and Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs. You can also hear him in various episodes of Family Guy, King Of The Hill!, and Robot Chicken.

Michael Winslow takes to the stage at The Core for one night only on Saturday 16 June at 7.30pm.

SATURDAY 16 JUNE A true Hollywood legend, best known for playing Sgt “Motor Mouth” Jones in the hugely successful Police Academy films, Michael Winslow is touring the UK for the first time ever with his critically acclaimed The Man Of 10,000 Voices, which can be seen at The Core at Corby Cube on Saturday 16 June.

This whirlwind of a show is like nothing before; a true smorgasbord of staggering special effects and astounding sounds that garnered amazing reviews and sold every single seat during his month’s run at the Edinburgh Fringe last August.

The original vocal artist of the 20th century, Michael Winslow can imitate the impossible using only his voice. Whether it’s the frenzy of Jimi Hendrix playing the guitar or a special treat for Star Wars fans, Michael is the master of vocal gymnastics.

ot only is it the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, but let’s also acknowledge National Flag Week

With all this in mind, and the sunshine finally deciding to make an appearance, we dare to take a look at beachwear in the patriotic shades of red, white, and blue while looking for something suitable for Daddy!

MAKE SURE YOU’RE BEAUTY, NOT THE BEAST...

A Royal treat!

The Queen’s Jubilee has come round so fast, but with so much attention on the Queen and all the old photographs in her younger years, I can’t help but notice that she is still so beautiful with such porcelain skin, no lines other than expression lines. I want to know her secret!!

I always wonder what treat-ments famous people have and how often they visit a beauty salon, I can’t imagine that the Queen would visit local salons I’m sure someone is based with her all the time, I just admire her beauty and charm she has.

I would imagine the Queen sees a lot of her natural beauty in Kate Middleton, and it does ap-pear the Queen is very fond of the new addition to royal family.

Kate Middleton has recently being commenting on the new collection ‘READY’ by bareM-inerals (last months issue) , saying how amazing and great the new quad eyeshadows are. Me and the representative from bareMinerals nearly fell off our seats when I showed her, as it hadn’t been released to salons when Kate commented.

I’m sure everyone will have a joyous occasion celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee, and although everyone has a bank holiday for it, we must remember of course why we have an extra day off to mark the anniversary of sixty years of the Queens reign.

Happy Diamond JubileeKara x

Mark returns to his passion of Hairdressing after spend-ing some time out of the salon working within different area’s of the industry from training through to sales. Mark has studied in Italy with the Leading Italian brand, Davines, where he qualified as a National Mas-ter Trainer, one of only handful in the UK. His training and sales skills have led him to work with some of the countries leading niche brands, train-ing other hairdressers in new techniques, styling and product knowledge. He has also worked along side names like Tim Hart-ley and Lee Stafford, renowned Hairdressers at educational sessions and demonstrated cutting and styling techniques at leading Hairdressing shows and The Clothes Show live for

a number of years. It’s now time to get back to where he is happiest and bring some of his experiences, new techniques

and inspiration back Market Harborough

What makes Dunleavy’s differ-ent? You get a longer appointment

time, one to one with your stylist from start to finish and they work only on you for your complete appointment time. Mark says “I want to make each client’s time in the salon more personalised, and to ensure I give my clients my undivided attention. I will achieve this is in Dunleavy’s. The retro styling shows another interest of mine, the salon has taken on the 70’s revival from wood panelling to geometric wall paper and has been fun sourcing and finding eve-rything to fit this. I now can’t wait to meet new clients and get to catch up with my old ones”.

3 tips for good skin

Summer has finally arrived and as the temperature increases, we want to spend more time outdoors. But we mustn’t forget that sunshine can cause real damage to our skin, so now more than ever it’s so important to have a regime. WOW takes you through some simple steps to healthy skin.

We’ve all heard the phrase “you are what you eat” but just as important is what you drink. Keeping your water levels up is the best thing you can do for yourself. Not only will it prevent fluid retention, but it will help flush out toxins, leading to an even complexion and reducing dry skin.

Whatever your complexion, everyone should be applying sunscreen (especially if you have freckles, moles or hyper-pigmentation). There are so many beauty products on the market with built in SPF, there’s no reason to become a victim of peeling skin.

It doesn’t matter if you are a man or woman, we should all cleanse, tone and moisturise. A hectic lifestyle will take its toll on your skin. Set yourself a simple cleansing routine day and night to keep your pores at their best. And don’t forget your body - a dry brush and some exfoliator will do the trick.

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU... SPONSORED BY

Telling Tales

9 June to 5 August A quirky and family-oriented exhibition inspired by local tales and legends is coming to the northampton Museum and Art gallery.

In ‘telling tales’, artist Peter slight combines models, papercut pictures and embellished photographs to tell the story of a missing Prince lost deep in mysterious woods – a tale Inspired by the rich variety of local

stories and folklore associated with northamptonshire.

Visitors to the exhibition will be invited to follow the story sequentially around the exhibition as they view the pictures. And anyone with a keen eye for art will be pleased to know that the artwork will be available to buy.

Peter slight explained: “north-ampton and its surrounding area is so heaped in rich folklore that it seemed a natural starting point

the exhibition is at NOrThampTON museum aNdarT Gallery, guildhall Road, northampton nn1 3RF, opening hours are 10am-5pm tuesday to saturday and 2pm-5pm on sundays. entry is free.

for our exhibition.“We couldn’t decide on a

single folk tale so ended up writing a new story incorporating elements from all our favourite ones.

“set in mysterious ancient woods, a small boy called ‘Mouse’ must search for the missing Prince who may be in real danger if the rumours about the ghostly hunter are true!”

the exhibition itself will feature six large and six small paper-cut pictures, a selection of prints, photography and five or six mixed media models. A centrepiece and woodland sounds will help bring the story to life. there will also be activity sheets and a colouring area for children.

on 3 August from 1-3pm, Peter slight will also run a ‘Woodland scene’ workshop where children aged 7+ will be able to make their stories come to life by creating 3D woodland box pictures.

Councillor Brandon eldred, Cabinet member for community engagement for northampton Borough Council said: “our

Museum and Art gallery continues to offer as broad a range of exhibitions as possible to appeal to all ages and tastes.

“the fact that this exhibition is inspired by local tales and folklore makes it very intriguing and will appeal to families from across northamptonshire.”

Admission to the exhibition is free but the workshop costs £3 per child (ages 7+). opening times are tuesday to saturday 10am-5pm, sunday 2-5pm.

Fri 15 – Sun 17 Juneeast is east writer Ayub Khan-Din returns with another funny, tenderhearted portrait of family strife.

Based on his popular play rafta, rafta, we follow Atul (ritch-ie) and Vina (Karan), a recently married couple. When their hon-eymoon is unexpectedly can-celled, the newly-weds find them-selves living with Atul’s interfering parents. With his parents in such close proximity, Atul is unable to consummate the marriage, and his beautiful virginal bride re-mains just that. A breezy mixture of heart-break and hilarity, All in Good Time offers brilliant performanc-es from its original stage stars, Harish Patel and Meera Syal..
