On Tuesday, October 20, True West Productions proudly welcomes David Bromberg and The Angel Band. Grammy-nominated virtuoso roots guitarist/ multi-instrumentalist David Bromberg is a master practitioner of folk, blues, bluegrass and other musical genres. Originally a “must-have” session man for everyone from Bob Dylan to Jay & the Americans and subsequently a hard-touring bandleader and recording artist with an enthusiastic following, Bromberg gradually phased himself out of the continual record- tour-record cycle starting in 1980. “I got burned out, but I didn’t know it was burnout,” he reflects. “I thought I wasn’t a musician anymore. I wasn’t writing or practicing. And I didn’t want to be one of those musicians who ends up ‘phoning it in.’ Music was too important to me to treat it that way.” So he switched his focus from performing to studying, moving to Chicago in 1980 to attend and graduate from the Kenneth Warren School of Violin Making. Based in the Windy City until 2002, when he relocated to Wilmington, Del., to open a violin store, Bromberg has continued to tour periodically, but has mostly stayed away from recording studios, with 1990’s Sideman Serenade his last album until the 2007 release of Try Me One More Time. On the latter, Bromberg harkens back to the acoustic folk and blues music of his early days on the mid-’60s Greenwich Village folk scene, a period when he guided the blind gospel-blues singer Reverend Gary Davis to concerts and churches in exchange for guitar lessons. The title track is Bromberg’s first recording of a song he wrote more than 30 years ago. Born in Philadelphia in 1945 and raised in Tarrytown, NY, Bromberg began studying guitar- playing when he was 13 and eventually enrolled in Columbia University as a musicology major. The call of the Greenwich Village folk scene in the mid-’60s drew David to the downtown clubs and coffeehouses, where he could watch and learn from the best performers, including primary sources such as his inspiration and teacher, the Reverend Gary Davis. Bromberg’s sensitive and versatile approach to guitar-playing earned him jobs playing the Village and as a backing musician for Tom Paxton, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rosalie Sorrels, among others. He became a first-call, “hired gun” guitarist for recording sessions, ultimately playing on hundreds of records by artists including Bob Dylan (New Morning, Self Portrait, Dylan), Link Wray, The Eagles, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson and Carly Simon. An unexpected and wildly successful solo spot at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival in Great Britain led to a solo deal with Columbia Records, for whom David recorded four albums. His eponymous 1971 debut not only included the mock-anguished “Suffer to Sing the Blues,” a Bromberg original that became an FM radio staple, but also “The Holdup,” a songwriting collaboration with former Beatle George Harrison, who also played slide guitar on the track. David also met the Grateful Dead and wound up with four of their members, including Jerry Garcia, playing on his next two albums. Bromberg’s range of material continually expanded with each new album to encompass bluegrass, ragtime, country and ethnic music. The current tour features David backed by (and supporting) Angel Band and his own David Bromberg Quartet. With music rooted in country, bluegrass and gospel, the three women in Angel Band spread their vocal wings and soar. Founder/leader Nancy Josephson, Jen Schonwald and Kathleen Weber all possess wonderfully individual lead and harmony voices that combine in “boisterous, sad, sweet, goofy, glorious and angelic noise,” as they describe it. Their love of the sound three female voices make together is at the center of the group. The chord rules the day -- both elemental and mystical; when all three voices hit “it,” the hair on the back of your neck will rise. The trio’s superb backing quartet includes Nancy’s husband, Grammy-nominated virtuoso roots guitarist/ multi-instrumentalist David Bromberg. Their singing and high-spirited, sassy, brassy onstage presentation have delighted audiences at Merlefest, Bonaroo, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and they astounded Linda Ronstadt when they sang with her on several occasions. Tickets are $30 in advance, $32 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. On Thursday, October 22, KRVM welcomes The Devil Makes Three back to the WOW Hall along with Eugene’s Alder Street All-Stars.

The Devil Makes Three was conceived on an epic goat ride through the Himalayas in search of the elusive yeti. On this fateful journey the drummer was killed in a bone-crushing avalanche. In another turn of bad luck a wandering priest cursed the three to tour the United States endlessly with nothing to listen to but Ravi Shankar.

Before long the group lost touch with reality and were incarcerated for trying to overthrow the government. While residing in the asylum for the criminally insane all members of the group received electro shock therapy in the hopes that it would make them normal productive members of society. Strangely enough just the opposite happened and they were eventually released when some paper work went missing. The rest as they say is history....

But seriously folks. The Devil Makes Three made a big splash in Eugene when they

performed at the 2007 Willamette Valley Folk Festival and have since become one of the WOW Hall’s most popular attractions. They sold out the venue when they last performed here in May. Now they are back -- touring in support of their new album Do Right Wrong, released in April on Milan Records.

This group gains fans the old school way -- playing a city, making friends, conquering fans and moving on. When they hit the next town, venues are packed with folks who heard about them from a friend in a city that they’d been to before.

Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummer-less trio -- consisting of guitarist/frontman Pete Bernhard, stand-up bassist Lucia Turino and guitarist Cooper McBean -- brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm and alive with three part harmonies which is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.

The Devil Makes Three had the goal of being, “an acoustic band but to play our shows like a rock show,” and in so doing changed notions of what acoustic music could be. Mixing styles of music from the twenties and thirties with the rock-and-roll and punk music of their adolescence, The Devil Makes Three pushes the boundaries of acoustic music. THE ANGEL BAND

On Saturday, October 10, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes two British Columbia based bands: NoMeansNo with special guests The Pack A.D.

Starting as a half piece band, NoMeansNo quickly blossomed into two -- two halves that is, equaling one band. Go on, do the math. They are one band, banded and then released into the wild. Rock and Roll baby, yeehaw! On a journey spanning the decades NoMeansNo has pushed the envelope of rock, and you might fi nd them indulging in punk rock from time to time, but not this week. Familiar with the dips, bends, peaks and valleys in the road, NoMeansNo is looking forward to going back.

Over two decades of touring and recording NoMeansNo has earned the respect that most bands dream of and never come close to, with high acclaim from

fans and peers. Their mom is also quite proud.

With their most recent CD, All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt, the long awaited follow-up to Mama, NoMeansNo has redefi ned the concept of gray haired, balding men playing rock music!

NoMeansNo have impressed people from Latvia to Sudbury, Ontario, with a few choice locations in between. Catch them this fall as they embark on their fi rst (or is it their last) tour of the United States, but only a small portion of it. You know, the part with trees.

Band members John Wright (drums), Rob Wright (bass) and Tom Holliston (guitar) have played the WOW Hall many times as NoMeansNo and The Hanson Brothers (their beer-and-hockey obsessed alter ego), but not since November, 2006.

The Pack A.D. is a no-holds barred garage blues cage match

played out between two dynamic young women from East Van. — the East side of Vancouver, B.C., Canada. Lead growler/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller have released a debut CD, Tintype, that got lips smacking about the group grinding out the sort of noise that made boys cry and girls hot and, well, sold freakin’ beers. The follow-up, Funeral Mixtape, got the group reviews in every major music press that there is.

Reports Now Magazine, “Black spits gritty lyrics and moans like she’s spent her last dollar on cheap whisky. The guitar-driven, aggressive rhythms move between desperation and seduction, and just when you start to settle into Black’s smooth riffs, Miller’s pounding kick pedal erupts with well-timed ferocity.”

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

A Celebration of the Life of Walter Wade (Wally) Slocum will be held on Sunday, October 11, at the WOW Hall.

Everyone who knew Wally is invited to celebrate his remarkable life.

Wally was born in 1937 and grew up in Lebanon, Oregon. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and received his Masters in Library Science from the U. O. as well.

“If you were a musician in Eugene, Oregon, from the 70’s through the 90’s, you probably knew Wally, and he probably knew you,” writes singer/songwriter/guitarist John Shipe. “Wally was a quiet patron of the arts, at the center of involvement going back to the early days of the Oregon Country Fair and the WOW Hall. He volunteered and made donations for local non-profi ts. But more than that, he

probably contributed directly to the pocketbooks of every jam band in town.”

Before retirement, Wally worked for the U. of O. Law Library for thirty years. He served on the board of directors of the CCPA/WOW Hall and Oregon Country Fair. His legacy includes many of the colorful banners that decorate Country Fair events. He started the OCF Teddy Bear (family) Picnic and could always be found staffi ng the potluck picnic tables. Suzi Prozanski credits him with inspiring her to write her book Fruit of the Sixties (which details the origins of the Oregon Country Fair and CCPA).

“Wally was an interesting man, intensely interested in movies, art, music and the alternative culture scene,” says Ben Farrell in the U. of O. Library Staff Association News. “He had a huge collection of psychedelic posters, collected

local artists, supported musicians and vaudevillians throughout his life and fed the squirrels daily at UO for over 25 years. He had a heart of gold.”

The schedule for the evening is as follows:

5:00-6:00 pm - Eulogies & Acoustic Tributes

6:00-8:00 pm - Community Potluck

8:00 pm-Midnight - Tribute Performances & Random Reminiscences

Zion IMonday, October 5, U. of O.

Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes back Zion I with special guests The Jacka, Kev Choice, Jern Eye and Eugene’s The pHormula & Undermind.

The Oakland hip-hop duo Zion I, last here in April, returns in support of their new album The Takeover.

“Zion I has a reputation of being very spiritual and serious,” notes Zumbi. “I think The Takeover is a lot more fun than our past records. We still touch on serious subject matter, but this album shows the other sides of our personality.”

Over the course of fi ve LPs and numerous EPs and mixtapes, the group has proven to be a welcome enigma in hip-hop. Lyrically, Zumbi runs the gamut on a range of issues both serious and frivolous, discussing problems and pleasures both spiritual and worldly. Musically, Amp draws from both the usual (funk, soul) and esoteric (house, drum n bass) to create soundscapes that work as well on an electronic music mixtape as it does hip-hop.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.

Brother AliMonday, October 12, U. of O.

Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes back Minneapolis rapper Brother Ali as he tours North America in support of his new album, Us. The “Fresh Air Tour” also features special guests Evidence, Toki Wright and BK One.

Brother Ali’s last album, The Undisputed Truth, was a landmark in hip-hop, an album that carried weight equally with critics and fans alike. His new album, Us (Rhymesayers Entertainment), is a progression that will make Brother Ali one of the most enduring fi gures in hip-hop; while still aware, Ali has turned his gaze inward, and started examining the human condition from the outside in. A profound personal glimpse into a vulnerability seldom seen or heard in music, Us touches on the strengths and fl aws of the human condition, exploring drug abuse, divorce, homophobia and many more topics that most people are scared to touch in their own lives, much less on an album

for the world to see. As with all his previous releases,

Ali’s musical landscape has been crafted by Atmosphere beatsmith, Ant. Staying true to their soul and blues infl uence they’ve become known for, Us takes on a more lush and dense sonic quality with the duo’s incorporation of live instrumentation.

In support of the new album, Ali is embarking on a North American tour of epic proportions, enlisting the help of labelmates and collaborators Evidence (of Dilated Peoples, recently signed to Rhymesayers), BK One and Toki Wright.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.

Swollen MembersSaturday, October 17, U. of O.

Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes Swollen Members, Souls of Mischief and Common Market along with Big B, Dirtball and Bliss N Eso.

Swollen Members have risen to the top of the underground hip-hop scene with a series of classic albums that have made them one of the genre’s brightest rising stars. Founded by two of the game’s best MCs, Mad Child and Prevail, along with the help of DJ Rob The Viking, Swollen Members have created a huge fan base while staying completely independent under their own label Battle Axe Records. Swollen had taken a break over the past few years while Mad Child dealt with

drug addiction and some legal issues, but the group has come back stronger than

ever with t h e i r

n e w

studio album “Armed To The Teeth”, which features guest appearances by Talib Kweli and Tech N9NE.

Souls of Mischief is an alternative hip hop group from Oakland, California, that is also part of the hip hop collective Hieroglyphics. The Souls of Mischief formed in 1993 and is composed of emcees A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. The group informally formed in high school before making their major-label debut on Jive Records with their well-received album 93 ‘til Infi nity (named one of the Top 100 Rap albums by The Source magazine). The Souls participated as full members in both Hieroglyphics’ studio albums: 1998’s 3rd Eye Vision and 2003’s Full Circle, and has released two albums on the Hiero’s independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings, 1999’s Focus, and 2000’s Trilogy: Confl ict, Climax, Resolution.

In January Souls of Mischief released the Tour Stories EP produced by Domino and co-

produced by Prince Paul. The song is taken from the forthcoming album, Montezuma’s Revenge.

Before forming Common Market in 2005, Sabzi and RA Scion both staked a name for themselves in the Seattle hip-hop scene – the former as producer and one-half of the duo Blue Scholars, the latter as a well-traveled solo emcee. Their paths crossed through the Baha’i faith and their political and spiritual approach to hip-hop music. After collaborating on a couple tracks on RA Scion’s 2004 solo project, Live and Learn, the duo began work on the 14-track self-titled Common Market LP, released in October 2005. KRS-One praised the album and RA Scion for, “spitting in the tradition of the conscious hip-hop movement.” The Blastmaster then fl ew up to rock Common Market’s album release party in Seattle and took the duo on the road with him on the Temple of Hip-Hop tour.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.

On Wednesday, October 14, the CCPA and KLCC welcome the Kyle Hollingsworth Band (of SCI) and Zach Gill (of ALO, Jack Johnson).

As keyboardist for Colorado’s beloved String Cheese Incident for over a decade, Kyle Hollingsworth has consistently proven to be one of the most innovative and virtuosic musicians on the jamband scene. Now, with the release of Then There’s Now (SCI Fidelity Records), his fi rst album since the band announced a hiatus in 2007, Hollingsworth emphasizes his considerable songwriting skills -- marking his true emergence as a solo artist.

For Hollingsworth, who has recently been more prolifi c than ever before, the title of Then There’s Now offers the fi rst clue as to where he stands today.

“It’s very much where I am post-Cheese,” he says, “both in my career and also personally. After becoming a father I realized the importance of living in the moment, in the now.”

Then There’s Now undeniably draws on Hollingsworth’s past affi liation with The Cheese, using his previous work as a jumping off point -- yes, there are some intoxicating jams to be savored. But the album’s “now” component -- irresistible melodies, poignant lyrics and fi ne-tuned song construction, plus a willingness to infuse the tunes with elements of pop, jazz, electronica, hip-hop and more -- transports Hollingsworth into musical realms he’s never before explored at length.

Recorded both in his own basement studio and at Boulder, Colorado’s Immersive Studios, Then There’s Now features Hollingsworth on vocals and a vast array of keyboards, guitarist Ryan Jalbert, bassist Garrett Sayers and drummer Dave Watts. Guests include Dar Williams, Liza Oxnard, DJ Logic and SCI percussionist Jason Hann.

Zach Gill’s fi rst band evolved into a variety of projects before emerging as the Animal

Liberation Orchestra. Formed in 1998, ALO has been Zach’s primary musical vehicle over the last decade. Best known for live prowess, the band has also released three critically acclaimed albums; most recently 2007’s, Roses and Clover.

In 2005, Zach joined forces with college pal and emerging superstar, Jack Johnson. Accepting an invitation to join Jack’s band, Zach diversifi ed the group’s trademark sound with his multi-instrumental zest, vocals, and dancing skills.

Zach recently collaborated with Aimee Mann and Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) on a composition, “At the Edge of the World” for the Paramount Pictures documentary, An Arctic Tale. In 2008 Zach released his debut solo project on Johnson’s Brushfi re Records.

With unique instrumentation and a playful spirit, Zack Gill carries on a tradition of true musicians who revel in playing and creating. He’s on a true musical journey that shows no sign of ending.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Saturday, October 3, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes BoomBox and Ana Sia and Children of Dischord.

BoomBox is Producer/Engineer/DJ/Drummer Russ Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/Guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. As much producers as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s knack for engineering, Godchaux’s understanding of soundscapes and the duo’s rich ability to improvise live that keeps BoomBox resonating at higher levels.

Producer / Engineer / DJ / Drummer, Russ Randolph, aka “the Captain” grew up in musically rich Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He spent his formative years playing drums in rock bands before taking a turn towards audio production. Russ attended the University of North Alabama’s school of commercial music and began his career in both studio production and live sound reinforcement. He has worked on numerous albums for independent artists and major labels like Capitol and Warner Brothers. BoomBox has given Russ the chance to focus all of his talents and energy into one musical offering.

Zion Rock Godchaux was raised in Marin County, in the San Francisco Bay area. The son of Keith and Donna Godchaux of The Grateful Dead, by six he was playing a special segment with his mother in “Heart of Gold Band” performances. Zion is a Producer /DJ/ Vocalist/Guitarist originating from the seemingly opposite infl uences of Dylan, Hendrix, Ravi Shankar, the Dead and various reggae heavyweights to the 70’s underground N.Y. funk, soul and disco scenes. Rather than throw one infl uence out for the other, Zion embraced both ends of the spectrum and brought it out in his own style of music.

Ana Sia’s love of electronic music -- combined with an innate understanding of the value of dance to the human soul -- collectively fuse to create unforgettable sets of experience, whether she is slamming spots in her hometown of San Francisco or taking her turn in the forests of music festivals around the country.

Ana’s energetic delivery of brain-fazing beats will take you on a musical expedition into the deepest reaches of your brain, as she masterfully blends a wide spectrum of rhythms with a beautiful fl uidity and a delicate sensibility, giving the dance fl oor a delightful ride that ends at the corner of bliss and oblivion.

Uniting the best elements of dirty dubstep, grimy glitch and her personalized blend of “global slut psy-hop,” Ana Sia’s sets confi rm crunk status of all who dare enter into her seamless world of sound.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Friday, October 30, Mike Thrasher Presents welcomes back Minus the Bear.

For the past six years, Seattle’s Minus the Bear have orbited the music world like a distant meteor, fi ne-tuning their unique brand of indie rock and discovering how technology can help enhance the band’s unique pop vision - all of which is about to culminate with their latest full-length Planet of Ice, an album showing the band not so much transforming their sound as transcending it.

Formed in Seattle, Washington in 2001, Minus the Bear was initially formed by guitarist David Knudson, bassist Cory Murchy and drummer Erin Tate who eventually recruited keyboardist/sequencer Matt Bayles and vocalist/guitarist Jake Snider. Once in the same room they realized they were on to something special

-- and the band quickly earned a rabid and rapidly growing fan base ranging from teenagers to middle-aged parents.

Although the band has released a handful of EPs and two full-lengths in their prolifi c career (most recently 2005’s Menos El Oso and the sister remix CD Interpretaciones Del Oso), with Planet of Ice the band -- which now features new keyboardist Alex Rose -- have taken their brand of idiosyncratic indie rock to new heights.

Planet of Ice shows the band allowing negative space and an airy openness to permeate their music; from the distinctively danceable opener “Burying Luck” to the syncopated sample-driven “Knights” to the album’s epic 9 minute closer “Lotus,” which evokes acts like Yes and Pink Floyd, minus the self-indulgent tendencies. Although all the musicians in Minus the Bear are

technically talented -- as anyone who’s seen Knudson’s unique approach to the guitar which features two-handed tapping and live looping already knows -- Planet of Ice shows the band focusing on songwriting instead of showiness.

The central theme of Planet of Ice involves nightmarish, nearly apocalyptic imagery.

“It’s an interesting contrast,” Snider explains, about the dichotomy between the band’s dark lyricism and upbeat music,

which is ever more prevalent on Planet of Ice. “I think that duality often makes for a better song because it gives it so much tension,” he continues. “Subconsciously, that was even more exaggerated on this record due to being on the road so much and seeing the reality of this country fi rsthand.”

Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 at the door (all advance tickets will have a service charge). Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

The Intergalactic Revolutionary Reggae Band Indubious is landing at WOW Hall on Friday, October 9, with special guest Alcyon Massive. KRVM’s Zion Train welcomes the show.

A Southern Oregon based funk/reggae fusion trio, Indubious is comprised of Spencer Burton (bass, vocals), his younger brother Evan Burton (keyboards, vocals) and drummer Matthew T. Wells. The Burton brothers, Bay Area transplants, rounded out the distinctive Indubious sound with Ashland native Wells. The band has been building a following in the Northwest with live shows and community outreach.

Indubious is described as powerful, epic and uplifting in not only sound and lyrics, but in pure energy and the spirit in which they disseminate their positive messages. The Indubious sound is a combination of roots reggae, powerful lyrical ability, angelic Crosby, Stills and Nash style harmonies with the clarity and intention reminiscent of The Beatles, backed by a bass player commonly referred to as “the next Les Claypool,” a virtuosic keyboard phenom; and a drummer with an ear for perfection.

The Burton brothers have shared a very special bond since birth. Not only are they best friends with the same passion for making music, but they were both born with cystic fi brosis, a genetic disorder affecting their respiratory system. The brothers look upon the disease as a gift, giving rise to a whole new way of thinking and living for them and their faithful fans. “Indubians,” have adopted the unoffi cial motto of “Live Indubiously,” meaning living life without doubt and fear and a full respect for all things, good and bad.

“We are here to share our message with the world and show people that we all write our own story in life and that absolutely anything is possible,” says Evan, “as long as you eliminate the doubt and fear that our society and culture thrives off of.”

Spencer and Evan claim the circumstances in their lives have made them who they are today and they would not change anything. Their ability to transcend boundaries is unparalleled with fans of every generation.

“Finding Indubious is like fi nding that great comedian who doesn’t cuss; who you can listen to with your grandma, and know you will both enjoy it,” says Wells.

On Sept. 1st, 2001 Charles A. Blake became Alcyon. While holding the body of a close friend after a motorcycle accident, Alcyon felt his friend’s spirit detach from the physical body leaving behind an expired “vessel”. Alcyon has been creating music that serves as a direct refl ection of his journey and the beautiful mysteries encountered therein. From Frat Boy to Dreadlock Psychonaut, Alcyon describes through his music the process of his spiritual metamorphosis as perceived through the lens of hip-hop, reggae and tribalonika.

On Thursday, October 8, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes back The Phenomenauts with Go Jimmy Go and The Panda Conspiracy.

Imagine if the Kinks, the Ventures, Stray Cats and Devo were galactic pioneers, and joined forces to defend earth’s right to rocket roll. Combine that with a fast driving blend of punk, pop, psychobilly, solid songwriting and a witty Sci-Fi theme, and you’ve got one of the East Bay’s most celebrated bands, The Phenomenauts.

The Phenomenauts are true galactic pioneers on a mission to entertain with their unique brand of Rocket-Roll. Conceived in the amazing year 2000, The Phenomenauts gained early recognition for their now infamous commando-style performances in which they set up in front of large music venues and performed rollicking sets powered by car batteries for unsuspecting crowds. They literally scammed their way into the 2003 Warped Tour.

A critical part of the Phenomenaut experience has always been their live show, during which the band proudly displays its evolving arsenal of homemade Phenoma-gadgets. The Theramatic Helmerator, or top of JoeBots head, contains a wireless theramin that creates Sci-Fi sounds reminiscent of

old Star Trek episodes; the Streamerator 2000, manned by Professor Greg Arius, blasts rolls of toilet paper out into the crowd, bringing them in as part of the show; clouds of CO2 envelop the crowd while rockets launch from the Rocketerator, and infl atable models of Earth hover above the band as they play the crowd favorite “Earth is the Best”.

The Phenomenauts image would not be complete without their own set of sharp uniforms. Donning the offi cial propaganda colors of their home planet Earth, our heroes have never gone on stage wearing civilian clothing. Many cadets are also arriving at shows wearing homemade uniforms modeled after the offi cial ones.

In the spring of 2003, the groups fi rst full length recording Rockets and Robots was received phenomenautly by radio stations and audiences surrounding the bay area. The Phenomenauts second release on Springman Records released in November of 2004, Re-Entry, stays true to the bands vision and captures the high-energy chaotic fun of the acts wildly popular live shows.

The Phenomenauts video for the song Mission (Directed by Anti-vision) from the Re-Entry album won Best Music Video in the 2006 Philadelphia Independent Film Festival. Part of the winning prize was to be

featured on the front page of Myspace.com. In Dec. 2006 Myspace.com featured the Mission video, where it was watched by over 140,000 people in fi ve days. One week later, in December of 2006, YouTube.com also featured the Mission video on their front page where it received over 330,000 plays.

The current lineup is: Commander Angel Nova, vocals/guitar; Corporal JoeBot 2.0, vocals/guitar; Captain Chreehos, standup bass/vox; Major Jimmy Boom, drums/vox; Professor Greg Arius on Moog, keys, special effects/vox; and Orbit the worlds most handsomest and talented Space Dog.

Hawaiian heavyweights Go Jimmy Go have been creating original rhythms since the late ‘90s. With a foundation of driving beats, drummer/vocalist Shon Gregory and bass man Jayder set the pace for Ian Ashley’s melodic guitar/vocals. Ryan Kunimura on trombone and tenor saxophonist Eric White add the sweet memorable fl avor of “old Jamaica”, while the frenetic moves and soulful vocals of lead singer Jason “Bison” Friedmann never cease to amaze.

Seattle‘s The Panda Conspiracy is supporting their sophomore release, Road Soda.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Thursday, October 15, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes a night of psychobilly with The Koffi n Kats, The Sawyer Family and Toxic Zombie.

The Koffi n Kats blasted out of Detroit in June of 2003 with the mission to not stop for anything. Vic Victor (lead vocal, upright bass) and Tommy Koffi n (guitar) started writing songs about drug use, self loathing and all things evil. With Eric “e Ball” Walls (drums) they began to stomp Detroit and the surrounding area. The next couple of years proved to be up and down with drummer changes and the release of their fi rst three albums - S/T (2003), Inhumane (2005) and Straying from the Pack (2006).

This onslaught helped to cement The Koffi n Kats as one if the top acts in the world of punk rockabilly. In 2007 Vic and Tommy hooked back up with Eric to get ready for the Fourth album -- Drunk in the Daylight (2008) -- and began what the Kats are known for -- NON STOP TOURING. They have done this ever since and now have joined forces with Stomp Records to release their 5th album, Forever for

Hire, in October 2009.Eugene’s Sawyer Family has gotten plenty of positive

reviews since releasing their third album, The Burning Times, here last November.

“The new Sawyer Family CD shows tremendous range,” reports the Register-Guard, “going from a simple 1950’s melody in ‘When the Moon Is Shining Bright’ to a rocker like ‘Buried Alive’ to an instrumental with a slightly risqué title.”

Notes Eugene Weekly: “They’re damn good at what they do. It might seem schticky, but the band’s image is a backdrop to solid songwriting and that elusive quality best described as ‘togetherness’... The Burning Times is a sleek (but not slick) collection of songs that keeps the cheeky, creepy cleverness of 2006’s Why Did God Create the Sawyer Family? while adding depth to the band’s sound and displaying their range.”

To this day, even after multiple label offers, The Sawyer Family has chosen to continue on their own. Their fi rst two videos, for the songs “Say Goodbye” and “Buried Alive”, are available online and two more are currently in post production.

From out of the toxic waste that is today’s contemporary music emerges a new musical force, Toxic Zombie. A band that will awaken the dead and eat your brains -- Toxic Zombie’s music is upbeat and fun, with catchy lyrics, memorable melodies and driving danceable rhythms. TZ draws it’s infl uences from punk, psychobilly, and metal, but no matter how you sum it up, it’s good old fashion rock’n’roll with a fun modern twist.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Tuesday, October 6, students from the Northwest Youth Corps will spend the day doing Outdoor Landscaping at the WOW Hall. Materials are being donated by Native & Urban Gardens, a Eugene landscaping business that is a longtime supporter of the WOW Hall.

Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) offers a challenging education and team-building experience that helps youth and young adults develop the skills they need to lead full and successful lives. NYC has three programs:

YouthCorps -- The YouthCorps program offers youth (14-19) a variety of spring, summer, and fall leadership and work experience opportunities. Youth, as part of a ten-member team, camp out near each week’s project assignment and rendezvous with other teams each weekend.

Outdoor High School (ODS) -- ODS is an alternative high school featuring experiential education curriculum that combines classroom learning with fi eld study activities and resource management projects.

AmeriCorps -- Funding awarded from the Oregon Volunteers! and The Corps Network allows AmeriCorps members to work directly with youth as mentors, peer counselors, team leaders and educators.

Eugene’s Native and Urban Gardens is a comprehensive landscape service providing intelligent solutions to common landscape needs using ecological and aesthetic design principles. Their mission is to provide cost effective solutions by emphasizing sustainability. They promote water management and encourage the use of native species, organic fertilizers and sustainable materials.

The students are scheduled to work from 9:15 am until 3:30 pm. ★

On Saturday, October 24, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes back MC Chris along with special guests Whole Wheat Bread and I Fight Dragons.

When he was here last October, comic rapper and self-professed nerd MC Chris died. Not only did the mouth that gave you Eating’s Not Cheating bite the big one, it appears the little devil went to hell, too! Yet somehow or other, MC Chris made it to hell and back in time to tour.

Playing two days behind Lucifer’s trio, MC Chris is ready to burn up the mic or rot in hell for trying. It’s all part of a the fall tour that wraps up in LA with a big Halloween Party. But as Chris’ initiates know, every MC Chris show is a Halloween Party. Be ye a Zombie or Star Wars’ character, the transformation is part of the fun.

“But MC Chris by himself should be plenty of entertainment for one evening.” reports Eugene Weekly. “His beats are catchy as a Kanye tip, but MC Chris rhymes about things that geeks like ourselves can relate to.”

MC Chris fi rst came to celebrity via Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, where he contributed animation and/or voice to Sealab 2001, The Brak Show and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, among others. His rap commercials plugged the channel and his own albums.

For his fi rst Eugene show, MC Chris and the WOW Hall rented an entire movie theater so that Chris and his fans could see the world premiere of Star Wars III:Revenge of the Sith together. A couple years later we did the same thing for the debut of the fi rst Transformers fl ick. And last year about this time, Zombies wandered the WOW Hall in search of brains (they left hungry).

Whole Wheat Bread is a Jacksonville, Florida-based punk band. They formed in 2003 and have released two albums and one EP. Their fi rst album, Minority Rules, reached #8 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart.

With a new lineup consisting of Aaron Abraham (guitar, lead vocals), Joseph Largen (drums, vocals), Will Frazier (bass, vocals) and Jason Chalman (lead guitarist), WWB released an EP, Punk Life, in November 2006. The EP included three original

songs and 3 “crunk rock” parodies of rap songs. Whole Wheat Bread released their second album

Hearts of Hoodlums in January 2009. Additionally, WWB also has been working with rapper Lil’ Jon on his anticipated solo album, Crunk Rock. The band is contributing music (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) as well as producing tracks with many well-noted rappers.

I Fight Dragons is Chicago’s fi nest (and quite possibly only) NES-Rock band. They have very detailed delusions of grandeur, most of which include gross misuses of Nintendo products in combination with music in the Popular Rock genre.

This February, they sold out Chicago’s Elbo Room as they self-released their debut EP, Cool Is Just A Number, which has since gone on to chart nationally at 169 on the CMJ College Radio charts, and been featured across Commercial Radio formats in Chicago.

They use a talking computer a lot, or possibly a talking computer uses them a lot. They were selected as the Best New Chicago band for 2009 by Metromix.com. There are several TVs at all of their shows, occasionally showing people playing videogame versions of their songs, while the band plays the songs live on videogame controllers and everyone’s heads explode.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Friday, October 16, KRVM welcomes back the Cast of Clowns with Eugene’s own Cap’n Trips.

Believe it and Not:Cast of Clowns set up the big top on holy grounds, where they

juggle songs, work live with wild jams, and perform high in the air. A converging of talents immersed in reverent irreverence, the Cast of Clowns fun machine consists of psychedelic tricksters who helped create the jam band world as well as emerging voices of what’s to come.

Formed around new original material of short story/song writer, Craig Wright (Redemption Center), Greg Anton (Zero) and Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead), the Cast features Jeff Pevar (guitarist for Crosby S t i l l s and Nash, Phil and Friends, Jazz is Dead and Ray Charles)

as well as Melvin Seals (famed organist of The Jerry Garcia Band) and Damian Erskine (Les McCann, Peter Erskine, Kai

Eckhardt). Good friends hang out in clown alley as well. The Grateful Dead’s Bill Kreutzmann played the

entire show at the Clowns’ 2008 performance at the Oregon Country Fair.

The Clowns keep new and original material center ring. Surprises will thrill and delight. Edges are pushed then

blurred. Mysteries are celebrated. Then the warmth of a gentle, or

not-so-gentle, ballad begins to billow the circus tent.

Let’s make one thing perfectly clear. Cap’n Trips is

NOT a Grateful Dead cover band. Cap’n Trips IS a Jerry Garcia tribute band.

That being said, band members are Tom Lemmon (lead vocals, guitar), Marcy

Andrews (mandolin), Trey Longstreth (bass, backing vocals), Anthony

F o r c e l l i n i (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Kenny Sokolov (drums).

Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

In the GalleryFor the month of October, the CCPA Lobby Art

Gallery will feature Works by Mo Bowen.Says Bowen:“My name is Mo Bowen and I am a local

artist originally from Chicago, IL, where I started photographing dilapidated and abandoned buildings, as well as collecting weathered found objects. Over the years I have collected many images and objects that resonate with me. In recent work, I have turned to collage and mixed media art out of an exciting necessity to explore and create relationships through combining my gathered items. I feel that photography and collage are psychological processes that help me to better understand myself and my purposes in this world. I

often ask myself, ‘why do I fi nd this particular thing so aesthetic; how does this refl ect me and what I want to convey visually?’

“My scan art, pictured, is my way of delving into the endless possibilities of collage; taking it to a new level and realizing new art forms. By placing objects on a scan bed, I can create two-dimensional images with actual, even live objects, while arranging them in a collage-like fashion (like a photogram with way more detail).

“I have thoroughly enjoyed creating all of my pieces; it is such a rewarding process and I look forward to sharing it with you.”

There will be an opening reception on First Friday, October 2, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The Lobby Art Gallery is open for viewing during offi ce hours, noon to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. ★

On Monday, October 19, Monqui Presents welcomes Blind Pilot with special guests The Low Anthem.

A review in the San Jose Mercury News calls Blind Pilot, “One of the best bands I’ve stumbled across in ages… their quiet, well-crafted folk/peaceful Americana is irresistible.”

The Portland-based band Blind Pilot strikes a balance between mellow folk and West Coast indie pop. Blind Pilot consequently relocated 90 miles north, where they spent three months inside an Astoria warehouse while recording demos for a full-length album. Afterwards, Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski launched a “bike tour” that saw them traveling from Vancouver to San Francisco via their bicycles, playing shows and selling EPs

(not to mention saving gas money) along the way. They returned home to fi nalize their debut, 3 Round and a Sound, which was released by Expunged Records in June 2008.

“…the songs on its marvelous debut, 3 Rounds and a Sound, are uniformly sturdy and sweet,” states NPR Music, “drenched in brightly rustic instrumentation and some of the sweetest harmonies this side of such like-minded peers as The Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes.”

Others have compared these distinctly Pacifi c Northwest regional progenitors of mellow to acts like Death Cab For Cutie, Elliott Smith, Iron & Wine, Bright Eyes, Gram Parsons and Jonathan Richman.

“It takes all of about 10 seconds of listening to this record

to realize you are listening to something special, and about the same amount of time to be completely sucked into Blind Pilot’s wistful, melancholic world of acoustic guitars, dulcimers, violins and the like,” notes Amplifi er Magazine. “The quality of the vocals and the melodies are what make this such an enjoyable listening experience.”

The Low Anthem is a folk and rock trio from Providence, RI who take infl uence from old gospel and folk tunes, Tom Waits, Neil Young, and Nick Drake. They are known for varied and eclectic instruments and a combination of thoughtful ballads with raw, minimalist rock. The Low Anthem formed as a professional band in 2006 in Providence, RI. The founding members were Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky. Their mutual interests in Americana, baseball, and morally agnostic narrative necessitated the formation of The Low Anthem. They began a collaboration with classical composer Jocie Adams in November 2007.

The Low Anthem have recorded three full-length records, toured extensively with over 100 shows in 2007, won Best Album of 2008 from the Providence Phoenix, received national radio play, and have a devoted fan base across the Northeast and beyond.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

Andre NickatinaOn Halloween night, I-Khan

Distribution welcomes Andre Nickatina back to the WOW Hall with special guest Cool Nutz.

Born and raised in The Fillmore District of San Francisco, Andre Nickatina has been a Hip-Hop/Rap luminary since the release of his critically acclaimed debut, The New Jim Jones. An award-winning MC and producer (2005 Bay Area Artist of The Year / Album of The Year for Bullets), Nickatina’s vision has expanded beyond the 18 albums (and hundreds of thousands of sales) that he has executive-produced. He has also gained critical acclaim for his work and vision as a fi lmmaker, with more than seven fi lms to his credit as either a director, co-director, executive

producer, producer or actor.Changing his name from

Dre Dog to Andre Nickatina in 1996, he transformed his career to a plateau that has allowed him to create and develop an entirely new fan base with his original fl ow, distinct voice and lyrical explorations that few other MCs have displayed an ability to achieve. He is seen as one of the last Bay Area Legends who was not only present during the golden era of Hip-Hop, but one of the few artists who has helped Hip-Hop grow and who has remained ultimately relevant with each successive album he has released. Nickatina does not do what the people want; rather the people want to know what Dre will do next.

Andre Nickatina shows usually sell out, so advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★
