Last Time OutMike Black scored on a driving layup with 3.7 seconds left andAlbany stunned Washington, rallying from a seven-point secondhalf deficit for a 63-62 win on Tuesday night. Abdul Gaddy gaveWashington the lead when he rebounded Aziz NDiayes missedfree throw and scored in the lane with 16.5 seconds left. Albanygot the ball to Black at the top of the key and he quickly darted pastC.J. Wilcox and was able to score on a scooping right-handed layupto give the Great Danes (2-1) the lead. Gaddy got off a desperation30-footer that hit of the side of the rim and handed the Huskies(1-1) the loss. Black finished with 22 points, while Jacob Iati hit six3-pointers and added 20 for Albany. Gaddy led the Huskies with 16points and NDiaye added 13 but was held to just one point in thesecond half. The game was played at Albanys pace and the Huskies could never get the tempo they wanted. Itdidnt help that Washington missed 11 free throws and was just 3 of 12 from 3-point range. Wilcox didnt makehis first 3-pointer until there was 1:39 left and finished with 11 points. Scott Suggs left the game 90 secondsafter it started; taking an elbow and a knee to the head and suffering a concussion.

    Washington vs. Ohio State/Big Ten

Washington holds an 8-3 all-time advantage over Ohio State, but the two teams have not met in the nearly 40years. The last time the two teams played was Dec. 1, 1972, when the Huskies notched a 67-63 win in Seattlin the season-opener. The last win for the Buckeyes over Washington came on Dec. 27, 1961 when No. 1 OhioState beat the Huskies 59-49 in the Los Angeles Classic. The Huskies have had a lot of success over the Big Te

Conference through history. They are 40-30 all-time against the conference, playing twice during the 2012 NITagainst Big Ten schools. The Huskies beat Northwestern, 76-55 in the second round of the NIT before droppinga 68-67 overtime decision to Minnesota in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

    Washington vs. Rhode Island/Atlantic 10

The Huskies have never faced Rhode Island, but are 11-11 all-time against teams in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Huskies last played an A-10 team last season, when they dropped a 77-64 decision at Saint LouisYou have to go all the way back to Nov. 28, 1999 to find the last time the Huskies beat someone currently inthe Atlantic 10, when the Huskies beat Saint Louis 69-60 at the Big Island Invitational. Saint Louis was not amember of the A-10 at the time of that win. The last true A-10 team that Washington beat was Xavier in the1998 NCAA tournament.

Who Are These Guys?THREE-HEADED MONSTER: The Huskies backcourt is one of the strengths of the squad. The Huskies have talent, size and experience at the positiothanks in large part to the trio of senior captainAbdul Gaddy and Scott Suggs and junior C.J

Wilcox. Combined, the group were the top threscorers during the teams summer foreign tour and

have played 233 games at the collegiate leveGaddy is the Pac-12s leading active player with 31assists, Wilcox was honorable mention All-Pac-1and ranks fifth in UW history in 3-point makes, anSuggs, a 41% career 3-point shooter, returns from abroken foot that cost him all of last season.

CENTER OF DEFENSE: Returning to man the middle for the Huskies is 7-foot senior Aziz NDiayeThe Dakar, Senegal native was a member of thePac-12 All-Defensive Team as a junior and enterthe year 8th all-time on the UW list for careeblocks. The career 54% shooter scored 7.8 pointper game and is the teams top returning reboundeafter grabbing 7.3 per game. NDiaye, the thirplayer to stand 7-feet or taller in the Romar era, isespecially rejuvenated this season after spendinpart of the summer in his native Senegal with histeammates and family.

THE REDSHIRTS:Jernard Jarreau and AndrewAndrews finally make their debuts after sitting ou2011-12 as redshirts. Both will be counted on tocontribute right away after spending a year learning Romars system, putting on weight (Jarreau hagained 25 pounds since stepping on campus) andeveloping their games. Andrews will be counteon for big minutes off the bench to spell the guardswhile Jarreau is one the primary candidates for th

    fifthe starting spot.

FINDING A FIFTH STARTER: Lorenzo Romar hasaid its a safe bet that four of the starting spothave been grabbed by Gaddy, Wilcox, Suggs andNDiaye. Desmond Simmons, Jarreau anMartin Breunig are all contending to hear thenames called at introductions, but it remains to beseen which frontcount player will win the startinnod. Simmons is the most experienced from thgroup with 11 starts already under his belt, but hehave to fend off the 6-foot-10 Jarreau and BreunigShawn Kemp was an early contender for a startinspot but will miss 6-8 weeks with a patella tendo

    tear in his knee.

THE WALK ONS: The Huskies gained a pair onewcomers that chose to walk on during the summer. Quinn Sterling joined the Huskies early ithe summer and traveled with the team to Europand Africa. The 6-foot-4 guard showed his shootinprowess on the trip but has been slowed this fawith a stress fracture in his foot. Dion Overstreejoined the team after contacting the coaching stafexpressing his interest to join the team. The 5-guard averaged double-digit points at Edmonds CC

The Huskies have won 15+ at home 18 times overall, but only two other times in the last 60 yearsoutside the Romar era.The Huskies won a school record 32 straight non-conference games at Alaska AirlinesArena, dating back to a 72-71 home loss on March 14, 2008 in the College Basketball Invitational to Val-paraiso, before South Dakota State beat them on Dec. 18, 2011.

THE TRANSFERS: Washington will have a pair of for-wards sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules. PerrisBlackwell from San Francisco and 6-11 Gilles Dier-

ickx from Florida International both joined the Hus-kies but are ineligible to play this season. The 6-foot-9Blackwell was honorable mention All-West CoastConference after averaging 12.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg whileshooting 57.5% from the field. He will have one sea-son of eligibility remaining. Dierickx started 15 gamesfor Isiah Thomas squad as a freshman last year andhas the ability to help inside with his size and knockdown shots from outside. The Belgium native will havethree years left to play starting in 2013.

COACHING ADDITIONS: Washington will havetwo new faces on the bench this season. Joining Lo-renzo Romars coaching staff are Brad Jackson and

Lamont Smith. Both are respected basketball mindsand have known Romar for years. Jackson joins theHuskies after leading Western Washington to the2012 NCAA Division II championship. He spent 27years as head coach for the Vikings before making themove to Seattle after Raphael Chillious left the Hus-kies bench to become an assistant at Villanova. Smithjoined the staff soon after Jackson, reuniting with hisformer boss, Romar. Smith spent the last five years asan assitant at Arizona State, but got his coaching startunder Romar at Saint Louis from 1999-2000. Longtimeassistant Paul Fortier moves to the new role of Direc-tor of Player Personel and Recruiting.

    NoteworthyStuck In Neutral?

Washington is 5-9 in regular season neutral sitegames (1-9 in the last 10) during Lorenzo Romars11-year tenure at the school. But, when it counts dur-ing the post-season, the Huskies are much better onneutral site courts. The Huskies are 13-6 under Romarat the Pac-12 Tournament and have won three tour-nament championships. UW is 8-6 on neutral sites inthe NCAA tournament and have made three Sweet 16appearances. The Huskies went 0-1 at MSG during theNIT. Overall, UW was 0-4 on neutral courts last season

and have lost their last five neutral site games. Theirlast win on a neutral site came on March 18, 2011when they beat Georgia in the second round of the

    NCAA tournament.

Husky Quick Hitters Washington returns 47.3 percent of its scoring and57.3 percent of its rebounding from last years teamthat went 24-11 overall, won the Pac-12 regular sea-son title and advanced to NIT semifinals. Two starters (Abdul Gaddy and Aziz NDiaye) re-turn to the squad and a total of four players returnwho averaged at least 17 minutes of playing time pergame. Plus, the Huskies get Scott Suggs back, whoaveraged 18.3 minutes per game in 2010-11. The Huskies went on a foreign tour this summer thatsaw them visit Spain, France, Monaco and Senegal.

    High Post Offense

Washington installed a half-court high-post offense thisyear and has been working on the new system since thesummer. Luckily for the Huskies, they had 10 extra prac-tices to prepare for their summer foreign tour. LorenzoRomar learned the high-post offense while an assistantunder Jim Harrick at UCLA and has implemented thestyle at his previous coaching stops of Pepperdine andSaint Louis. The Huskies will still run the floor at everyopportunity as evidenced by their 85 points scored inthe season opener vs. Loyola.

    World Travelers

The Huskies embarked on a two-week trip this sum-mer to Europe and Africa that saw them visit Barce-lona, Spain; Nice France; Monaco; Paris, France; andDakar, Senegal. During their foreign tour, the Huskiesplayed six games and went 3-3 against professionalteams. Scott Suggs and Abdul Gaddy led the team with13.5 ppg, while C.J. Wilcox was third with 13.2 ppg.But more importantly, the team had many experiencesthat will stay with them for their entire lives. While onthe trip, the team saw such sites as the Eiffel Tower,

The Louvre, the Princes Palace in Monaco, FraggonardPerfume Factory; Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and the1992 Olympic sites in Barcelona, Spain. They wrappedup their trip with three days in Dakar, Senegal (see nextnote).

    Dawgs Visit Africa

The Huskies capped their foreign tour this summer byspending three day in Dakar, Senegal. While in Africa, the team had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dakar, thecapital of Senegal, is home to senior Aziz NDiaye. Hereturned home for the first time in two years and servedas host, ambassador and translator during the trip. Theteam started their Africa leg with a visit to the Bandia

Animal Reserve, followed by a stop at the SEEDS Acad-emy, where NDiaye got his basketball start. NDiayeled the Huskies as they ran a clinic for the youngermembers of the academy. The next day the team joinedNDiaye on a visit to his home where they saw the homein which NDiaye grew up. His mom cooked NDiayesfavorite meal -- fish and rice -- for the whole team. Laterthat evening the Huskies were scheduled to play DakarUniversity, but a severe rainstorm flooded the court andmade the venue unplayable. On the final day, the teamvisited Goree Island, a slave-trading post that served asthe last stop for millions of African slaves before theywere shipped off to Europe and the Americas.

    Huskies Are NBA Ready

Washington has developed a reputation for sendingplayers to the NBA during Lorenzo Romars first 10 sea-

sons as head coach. Last year, UW was the only Pac-12school with multiple players selected and for the firsttime ever saw two players selected in the first round(Terence Ross, 8th to Toronto and Tony Wroten 25th toMemphis). A total of six Huskies have been selected inthe first round picks under Romars tenure to equal UCLAfor the most among Pac-12 schools. Romar Leads UW To Another His-

    toric Season

Once again, Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar led the Hus-kies to unchartered territory in 2011-12. The list is longof accomplishments that helps solidify Washington asone of the elite college basketball programs in the na-tion. Here is a quick overview of some of the programsaccomplishments during the year:

For the first time in school history, the Huskies havewon 20 or more games in four-straight seasons. Washington has amassed 100 wins over the last fourseasons, the first time in program history they havereached the century mark in a four-year span. The Huskies won the Pac-12 regular season title witha 14-4 record, their 23rd conference title since 1911 --18 of those crowns are outright -- but only two of thosehave come in the last 58 years (2009 & 2012). Fourteen conference wins equals the 4th most inteam history and just the 9th time the Huskies haveacheived that many league victories. UW advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 NIT Tour-nament, the furthest they have advanced in the post-

season tournament and furthest they have advanced ineither the NIT or NCAAs since 1953. Tony Wroten was named Pac-12 Freshman of theYear, the fifth time in UW history they have won theaward. Wroten and Terrence Ross both earned first team All-Pac-12 honors, making UW the only team with multipleplayers on the first team in four-straight years.

    Post-Season Hardware

Lorenzo Romar won conference coach of the year for the third time, the sixth time a UW coach has wonthe award. Tony Wroten is the fifth Husky to win Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and added all-conferencehonors along with Terrence Ross.C.J. Wilcox got an honorable mention nod. 20/20/20/20 Visions

The Huskies have 20-plus wins in four-straight season for the first time in team history. Washington hadwon 20-plus in three consecutive seasons two times previously: 1951-53 and 1943-45. The Huskies havewon 20+ games for the sixth time under Lorenzo Romar and for the 27th time overall in team history. Theonly other Husky coach with more 20-win seasons is Hec Edmundson, who accomplished the feat 11 times

from 1928-1945. Washington has now won 100 games during a four-season span from 2009-12 (26 in 200926 in 2010, 24 in 2011, 24 in 2012), besting the previous top four-year stretch in team history: 96 wins from1950-53 under Art McClarey (19) & Tippy Dye (77).

    UW vs. Top-10 Teams

The Huskies faced No. 7 Duke on Dec. 10, the only time during the year they faced a top-10 ranked team.In 2011, UW played three teams that were ranked in the top-10 at the time -- all losses. The Huskies are33-121 all-time against teams ranked in the top-10 -- including 2-19 on a neutral court -- and 9-18 inRomars 10 years. The Huskies last win over a top-10 team was in 2010s second round of the NCAA Tournament when they soundly beat No. 8 New Mexico.

    Vs. Ranked Foes

The Huskies were 0-2 against teams ranked in the AP top-25 during the season, losing to Duke and Mar-quette. Their last win came over No. 16 Arizonza in the championship of the 2011 Pac-10 tournamentOverall, the UW is 28-59 against AP ranked opponents since Jan. 1, 2000. UW has won its last four agains

ranked foes in the confines of Alaska Airlines Arena and are 16-5 over the last 21 contests against rankedfoes at home. Overall, Washington is 19-14 all-time at home during the decade. UW had lost its previous8 decisions against ranked non-conference opponents before ending a three-year drought by beating Texas

The people of Seattle and students at the University of Washington know what a special place the Pacific Northwestcan be and that the Huskies campus is world-class caliber.
