On Sunday, August 1, University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcomes Nappy Roots to the WOW Hall along with Eugene’s own Undermind & KI. In an economically recessed climate, Nappy Roots has joined the rest of the nation in trying to understand and work through financial and emotional struggles. No stranger to challenges, this five-man collective from Kentucky tackled their obstacles and, in the process, their self-proclaimed best and most honest work emerged —The Pursuit of Nappyness. In this sixth studio album, Nappy Roots, with lyrical originality, examine reason, truth and our inalienable rights. Since entering the music scene in 1998, Nappy Roots have remained real, humble, talented guys with an undeniable southern swagger. After the international success of Watermelon, Chicken, & Grits, selling over 3 million albums, the members of Nappy Roots were flying high while still acutely aware of how far it could be to the bottom should they fall. It is that practical presence of mind that helped them sustain touring as a group for ten years. Fans and friends can be used interchangeably when referring to their army of followers. For most people, it is normal to only share intimate moments with friends, but for the members of Nappy, it is no different when in their living room, in the studio, or on stage as they possess the gift of honesty and deliver that message with charisma. That truthfulness is especially reflected in The Pursuit of Nappyness — inspired and written for this moment in time. Changes resulting from their severed relationship with Atlantic Records include R. Prophet striking out on his own with a solo effort. Nappy Roots had no choice but to keep it moving and did so. With no major label record deal, Nappy Roots Entertainment Group was formed. The members of Nappy Roots were now facing foreclosures and a mountain of stress in the jobless economy, but still they remained positive while never forgetting where they came from and what they had accomplished. With fans constantly communicating with the members online and at shows, the guys realized they weren’t the only ones having trouble. A weak man with no vision, no diligence behind the vision, and no faith behind the diligence would have given up, but Skinny Deville, Fishscales, Big V, B. Stille and Ron Clutch did, can, and will handle this and more, all in The Pursuit of Nappyness. To truly grasp the meaning of this pursuit, look to singles like “Fishbowl”, “Ride” and standout tracks such as “Back Home”, “The People” and “Be Alright”. With the bonus track for fan appreciation entitled “All for You”, it is concretely revealed why Nappy Roots still is relevant and that there will be continued longevity for this group. Nappy Roots will definitely give you something to think about while they take you on their journey to “The Pursuit of Nappyness.” Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. On Tuesday, August 3, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and KRVM proudly welcome An Evening with Jim Messina performing his music from Loggins & Messina, Poco and Buffalo Springfield. Few musical artists résumés list membership in a band inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame; fewer still can lay claim to being a founding member of the seminal band credited with creating Country Rock; and only one artist can include all the above in addition to being one half of the most successful duo of the 1970s. When chronicling the current success of artists like Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn, and the pairing of Alison Krauss & Robert Plant for 2009’s Album Of The Year Raising Sand, it is not overstating things to say a direct line can be drawn back to Jim Messina’s legacy with Buffalo Springfield, Poco and Loggins & Messina. A supremely talented guitarist, Jim Messina began working with the Buffalo Springfield in 1966 as a recording engineer on their second album Buffalo Springfield Again. In 1967, at the request of the group and Atlantic Records founder and president Ahmet Ertegun, Messina was asked to produce the band’s third and final album Last Time Around. Shortly thereafter, he replaced bass player Bruce Palmer — touring and recording with the band up until completion and release of their swan song album. After Buffalo Springfield disbanded, Messina signed a recording contract with Epic Records in December of 1968 and joined with fellow Buffalo Springfield member Richie Furay to form Poco. The band’s aptly titled 1969 debut Pickin’ Up The Pieces is the only debut album ever to receive a perfect rating from Rolling Stone magazine; the landmark album laid the blueprint for the then new musical genre uniting country with rock music, blazing a pathway for future artists like the Eagles. On the band’s self-titled second album, Poco (also released in 1969), Messina both produced and penned the band’s first charted single, “You Better Think Twice”, which has endured as one of the group’s signature songs. A copy of the album now hangs in the Poco exhibit in the Country Music Hall Of Fame in Nashville. After producing the live document Deliverin’ (recorded in 1970 and released in 1971), Messina left Poco and signed on as an independent producer with Columbia Records. In November of 1970, Messina opened up his living room to record a number of compositions for a promising young songwriter named Kenny Loggins. With the songs Loggins presented leaning more toward folk (a style Jim felt could resign Loggins to the “past”), Messina suggested to Columbia Records president Clive Davis that he consider letting Messina “sit in” in much the same way that jazz artists had done in the past, and that Loggins incorporate more upbeat material into his album. Says Loggins: “Right from the beginning, Jimmy was the producer, I was the artist. I’d never made a record. I’d never put a band together. I’d never found a manager or an agent. So, Jimmy was the leader...” Leading the way as producer, arranger, vocalist and guitarist, and contributing songs such as “Listen To A Country Song”, “Nobody But You”, “Same Old Wine” and “Peace Of Mind”, the album Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was born. In the next few years, a series of albums would follow in rapid order — 1972’s Loggins & Messina, 1973’s Full Sail, 1974’s double-live On Stage, the same year’s Mother Lode, 1975’s cover song set So Fine and 1976’s Native Sons. The Best of Friends greatest hits collection followed later that year and in 1977 another live album fittingly called Finale. When the dust had settled, Loggins & Messina had sold sixteen million albums, become one of rock’s biggest live draws, and cemented their legacy as one of the most successful recording duos ever. Following the split, Messina recorded four critically acclaimed solo albums: 1979’s Oasis, 1981’s Messina, 1983’s One More Mile; and 1996’s Watching The River Run. Messina also reunited with Poco for the 1989 album entitled Legacy, as well as establishing the Songwriters’ Performance Workshop whose purpose, explains Messina, “is to empower the amateurs to let go of the fear and embrace the joy of writing and performing their music.” In 2004 Messina joined Loggins at a benefit at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theater and the nearly three decade gap was bridged in an instant. That spark fueled a series of festive shows in 2005 with the duo playing their seminal songs that, says Messina, “spoke to a generation, not just to a radio station.” The resulting sold out nationwide tour culminated in the CD and DVD release Loggins & Messina Live - Sittin’ in Again at JULY 2010 VOL. 22 #7 WWW.WOWHALL.ORG Community Center for the Performing Arts 291 West 8th Eugene, OR. 97401 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED Nonprofit Organization U.S. Postage PAID Eugene, OR 97401 Permit No. 303 Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Nappyness Jim Messina: His music from Loggins & Messina, Poco and Buffalo Springfield INSIDE THIS ISSUE CAP’N TRIPS P.2 BIG HEAD TODD AND THE MONSTERS P.3 MARK GROWDEN P.4 MANOOGHI HI P.4 ONLY NIGHTMARES P.5 AGGROLITES P.6 RUSSELL BATISTE P.6 SWINGIN’ UTTERS P.7 MUSIC’S EDGE ROCK CAMP P.7 Continued on Page 5

On Sunday, August 1, University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcomes Nappy Roots to the WOW Hall along with Eugene’s own Undermind & KI.

In an economically recessed climate, Nappy Roots has joined the rest of the nation in trying to understand and work through fi nancial and emotional struggles. No stranger to challenges, this fi ve-man collective from Kentucky tackled their obstacles and, in the process, their self-proclaimed best and most honest work emerged —The Pursuit of Nappyness. In this sixth studio album, Nappy Roots, with lyrical originality, examine reason, truth and our inalienable rights.

Since entering the music scene in 1998, Nappy Roots have remained real, humble, talented guys with an undeniable southern swagger. After the international success of Watermelon, Chicken, & Grits, selling over 3 million albums, the members of Nappy Roots were fl ying high while still acutely aware of how far it could be to the bottom should they fall.

That truthfulness is especially refl ected in The Pursuit of Nappyness — inspired and written for this moment in time.

On Saturday, July 31, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and KRVM’s Short Strange Trip proudly welcome the second annual Jerry Garcia Day Celebration at the WOW Hall with Cap’n Trips.

Tom Lemmon has been playing the guitar for over 40 years. He formed Cap’n Trips two years ago to have some fun and to honor Jerry Garcia, “one of my heroes from the 60’s.”

“We have played over 20 gigs, including the 2008 Hemp Fest, the 2008 Black Sheep Festival (where we played to 500 people) and the 2009 Tayberry Jam Festival,” reports Tom. “All the band members are in their 40’s or 50’s and have played in far too many bands to mention here. One of our remaining goals is to play the main stage at OCF (Editors Notes: the band played the OCF Spring Fling

this year and got an enthusiastic response). Our audiences are fantastic, dancing and twirling to that ‘old time religion’ of the 60’s.”

This is the third straight year Cap’n Trips has played on Jerry’s birthday (the second at the WOW Hall). The band will play two long sets and sing Happy Birthday to Jerry with the crowd at midnight. There may even be a birthday cake!

Cap’n Trips is: Tom Lemmon (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Marcy Andrews (mandolin), Trey Longstreth (bass, vocals), Anthony Forcellini (lead guitar, vocals), Ken Sokolov (drums) and Bob Becker (drums).

Born August 1, 1942, Jerome “Jerry” Garcia was an American musician best known for his work with the band the Grateful Dead. One of its founders, Garcia performed with The

Grateful Dead for their entire three-decade career (1965 to 1995). Garcia also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders-Garcia Band with longtime friend Merl Saunders, Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, the Garcia/Grisman acoustic duo, and Legion of Mary. Garcia co-founded the New Riders of the Purple Sage with John Dawson and David Nelson. He also released several solo albums, and contributed to a number of albums by other artists over the years as a session musician. He was well known by many for his distinctive guitar playing and was ranked 13th in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” cover story. He died of a heart attack in August 1995.

Admission is $10 at the door. Doors open at 9:00 pm and the band begins at 10:00. ★

In The GalleryFor the month of July and August, the CCPA Lobby Art Gallery will feature the work of Jazmine Gabriel.Jazmine is a Eugene-based painter, who recently completed her Ph.D. in philosophy. Her paintings are

inspired by her studies in philosophy and the history of art, as well as by time spent looking at the lines and colors of the Willamette River. Although these paintings include colors one would not expect to fi nd in a landscape, they are in many ways inspired by hours gazing at the river-focusing on the vertical lines of the trees interrupted by the horizontal ripples of water. The horizontal and vertical lines are also inspired by studies in the philosophy of science: the lines can be thought of as time and space, a place to plot motion; occasional loops and diagonals interrupt the rigidity of this mathematical world, like life, defying the tendency towards increasing chaos, for a time.

The Lobby Art Gallery is open for viewing during offi ce hours, noon to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. For more information, call 541-687-2746. ★

We Love Our Volunteers! WOW Hall Volunteers celebrate at the WOW Hall Volunteer Appreciation party held on June 19. ★

On Wednesday, July 28, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and KLCC proudly welcome Big Head Todd & the Monsters back to the WOW Hall along with special guests Truth & Salvage Co.

Big Head Todd and The Monsters release their brand new studio album, Rocksteady, on July 20 on Big Records. In support of Rocksteady, the band is hitting the road for a sprawling summer tour, including a recent gig at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, where they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Midnight Radio by performing the album in its entirety.

For Rocksteady, The Monsters’ eighth studio album, the band draws on a surprising body of infl uences. The songs cut across a broad swath of stylistic terrain including R&B, reggae and even punk rock. Throughout, the collection’s eleven tracks are funky, lilting and melodic — all the qualities that have become signature to the band’s sound during their 25 years of making music.

The new collection features founding members Todd Park Mohr (lead vocals and guitars), Rob Squires (bass) and Brian Nevin (drums), with keyboardist, steel guitarist and backup vocalist Jeremy Lawton, who joined The Monsters in January 2004.

“Beautiful”, the set’s fi rst single, offers a sunny Caribbean vibe, as does the band’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Beast of

Burden” (long a concert staple). “Back to the Garden” and the homage “Muhammad Ali” pulse with a roots rock groove, while the set’s title track is based in the like-named, revved-up Jamaican style that preceded reggae’s arrival in the late ‘60s. “I Hate It When You’re Gone”, dressed with a full horn section, is blazing old-school R&B, while a version of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” is burning Chicago blues in a Monsters’ pocket.

“It’s a soul/Caribbean record that rocks,” Mohr says. “We almost went out of our way to take all the rock out of it, but it really rocks. It’s the very fi rst album we’ve ever done that’s this cohesive and focused. That’s what makes it shine and stand out from our other albums.”

Rocksteady is the latest chapter in a rock ‘n’ roll career that stretches back to 1986 when Mohr, Squires and Nevin were University of Colorado students. Big Head Todd and The Monsters soon became one of the region’s most popular acts. After issuing two popular independent releases on their Big imprint, the band hooked up with Irving Azoff’s Giant Records for the platinum album Sister Sweetly (1993). The Monsters issued four chart albums on Giant and Warner Bros.

The band’s formidable reputation rests on their stage performances. Over the years, the group has developed a close relationship with their fans.

Their last album, All the Love You Need, was released as a free download and snapped up by half a million followers.

Rocksteady can be seen as Act One of a two-act Big Head Todd spectacular, since the band cut enough tracks to fi ll two CDs. A projected future release will include the sessions’ more hard-edged material.

Mohr says, “We went into the studio and recorded over thirty songs. We’ve always been a versatile group with a wide range of infl uences and so our albums tend to be an eclectic mix of different genres of music. Somewhere along the line we realized we had a group of songs that fi t together really well as a soul/R&B/Caribbean kind of thing. So we set aside some of the harder rock stuff in order to focus on a soulful, danceable sound.”

Mohr attributes some of the funk in the Rocksteady sound to the infl uence of the late Nigerian Afrobeat titan Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his son Femi Kuti, whose work he had been listening to deeply, and to his ongoing fascination with reggae and its intersection with punk rock.

The six musicians of Truth & Salvage Co. boast four lead singer/songwriters, each with a unique story to tell and voice to be heard. Originally hailing from Atlanta, New Orleans, Indianapolis, Tupelo and various cities throughout Ohio, each member has roots in a different past. The result is genuine American Rock ‘N’ Roll with a timeless sound and interwoven lyrical storytelling.

It was, in fact, the sincerity of their song writing and passionate performance that attracted The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson to produce their debut album. The songs are a testament that a band of six can truly express a shared message of love, strength and hope.

Truth & Salvage Co. toured extensively in 2009 as the opening band for The Black Crowes and in 2010 they will tour with The Avett Brothers.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door, and $35 for Meet & Greet (available only at http://www.bigheadtodd.com). Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

WOW it’s the Oregon Country FairThe 2010 Oregon Country Fair will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10-11.Come visit the WOW Hall/KLCC booth at the Main Stage meadow. The CCPA operates a storage service during public hours (11:00 am - 7:00 pm). You can check in your

backpack, ice chest, costume or what have you and we’ll watch it for $1. You can access your items during the day at no charge. Plus you can fi nd the WOW Hall Notes, hear about upcoming shows, order WOW Hall t-shirts and hoodies (for delivery after the Fair), and sign up to become a WOW Hall member or volunteer.

Every scout knows to be prepared. As we saw last year, weather during Fair hours can vary, so bring your duds for hot, cool and/or wet. On very hot days you can bring a bathing suit, leave your street clothes at the WOW Hall booth and stroll the Fair in comfort. And on wet days, who can resist stripping down for a slide through the mud? Be sure to bring sandals, sun screen and mosquito repellant.

And with the Fair Family itself camped at times great walking distances from Main Stage, it might be worth a dollar (to a good cause) not to have to travel back to the campsite several times a day. Bring in a day pack and we’ll keep it handy.

House Manager Kayte McDonald will be performing with her band Kudana, and WOW Hall staff, volunteers and alumni are scattered throughout the Fair.

The WOW Hall will be closed from Saturday, July 3, through Monday, July 12. Look for our West African dancers at the Fair — they are truly spectacular!! ★

On Sunday, July 25, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome Mark Growden back to the WOW Hall along with Eugene’s Mood Area 52.

Hailed as, “one of California’s most colorful and intriguing musicians” (Albuquerque Alibi), “fi ery, earthy and sublimely sensual” (Comet Magazine), as well as “theatrical, dark and sexy” (West Coast Performer), Mark Growden made his debut here in 2008 as one of the Monsters of Accordion, but he actually performs about half his songs on banjo. He returns in support of his fi rst new CD in eight years, Saint Judas.

Saint Judas is a stunning exploration of pain and catharsis, love and transformation, tenderness and desire. Recorded live in the studio in the Bay Area, Saint Judas is a rich and haunting collection of stories and melodies that embraces and celebrates the saints and sinners in each of us.

“Growden’s voice is bigger than a 10-story building,” notes the Contra Costa Times, “and when he clacks his cowboy boots on a hollow patch of fl oor along to some of his tunes, the sound seems to reverberate across the globe.”

Saint Judas, an intoxicating mix of roots music with a postmodern aesthetic, features 13 tracks of ‘Americana noir’ with an overarching theme of redemption. There is a darkness that haunts Saint Judas, though not without a glimmer of hope. Growden explains that, for him, the resurrection theme that surfaces throughout the work isn’t of the magical rise-from-the-dead variety, but rather that, “it takes some grieving to get through to the joy.”

Growden is captivated with old American music, mainly African-American, recorded by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax in the 1930s and 1940s; several tracks on Saint Judas are reworkings of these songs. Album opener “Undertaker”, based on a Lomax fi eld recording of the prison work song “Rosie”, introduces the theme of resurrection. “Dig me a grave, in the open plain. Lower me down, and pull me up again,” sings Growden, over a howling guitar and trumpet. And the closing banjo-and-voice only “All the Pretty Little Horses” is a version of an old spiritual Growden calls “one of his favorite songs ever” which was written, according to legend, by a woman watching horses pull her child’s hearse through the streets.

The title track on Saint Judas – a cabaret rocker with its refrain of “bottoms up to you, buddy, ’cause somebody had to take the blame” – honors the biblical “Saint of Sinners” often vilifi ed as the traitor who turned on Jesus. The song is a call to acknowledge and accept the worst that lies within everyone while fi nding the strength to forgive and carry on.

As a composer and performer, Growden has released several critically acclaimed albums and performed at venues such as the Fillmore and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, and Tonic and The Knitting Factory in New York. He has performed and collaborated with a wide range of artists including members of The San Francisco Opera, Bob Weir, Hamza el Din, Kid Congo Powers, John Santos, Omar Sosa, Remy Charlip, Faun Fables and Stan Ridgeway. He has composed original musical scores for a number of dance and theater companies including Joe Goode Performance Group, The Crucible, and Alonzo King’s LINES Contemporary Ballet with whom he and his collaborators won the Isadora Duncan Award for Best Original Score for a New Dance Piece. He has scored several fi lms including 2005’s Blood Tea and Red String. Growden also co-produces San Francisco-based COVERT – a site-specifi c concert series with famed artist John Law.

After initially establishing himself as a jazz/new music winds player and composer in the mid-1990s, Growden began playing accordion and banjo when all his other instruments were stolen from a theater where he was accompanying a dance performance. He is currently writing an opera based on Saint Judas, is working on an educational fi lm about how the harmonic series works, and leads singing workshops in various cities.

It’s now been over a year since Mood Area 52 last graced the WOW Hall stage. Michael Roderick founded Mood Area 52 in 1998 as a Piazzola inspired neo-tango ensemble. The band performs in various combinations and includes some of Eugene’s fi nest musicians in its rotating ensemble, including cellist Amy Danziger, guitarist Billy Barnett, bassists Dorian Crow and Jeremiah Harris, and drummer James West.

Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Saturday, July 24, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome Manooghi Hi for their WOW Hall debut.

“Suffi ce to say you’ve never heard anything like Manooghi Hi,” reports The Seattle Times. “Maybe because . . . their sound has never before been attempted. To oversimplify, it’s like this: panoramic rock ‘n’ roll fronted by a petite, beautiful Indian woman scat singing in Hindi. The cross-pollination is dizzying — East and West, ancient and modern, pop and classical, ecstatic spiritualism and headbanging rock.”

Pop-diva Mehnaz Hoosein has enjoyed a perpetual career as a singer, dancer and performer in

India. Originally from Mumbai (Bombay), Mehnaz began her vocal training at a young age and then studied dance at the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts. Her career was launched with the 1996 release of “Banoongi Mein Miss India” (trans: “I will be Miss India”) that sold over one million copies worldwide and clinched accolades from both Channel V Music Awards and Screen Videocon Awards for “Best Female Pop Singer - Indian”.

Mehnaz has released three solo records, the last of which was Sajnaa (2006). She has shared the stage with artists like Led Zeppelin, Jon Bon Jovi, the Spice Girls, Gwen Stefani, Brian Eno

and Bryan Adams, and her voice can be heard on the soundtracks of Bombay Boys, Split Wide Open and Snip.

Aspiring to embark on a new artistic journey as a songwriter and member of a collective team, Mehnaz took a leap of faith and joined her childhood friend Ava Chakravarti and the rest of Manooghi Hi in Seattle in 2007. Band members include Jarrod Kaplan (percussion), Jimmy Thomas (bass), John Hollis Fleischman (percussion), Ava Chakravarti (vocals), Todd Fogelsonger (guitar) and Kent Halversen (keyboards and vocals).

Percussionist Jarrod Kaplan is someone needing little to no introduction, having played the WOW Hall many times in the bands Trillian Green, Hanuman and Taarka. Jarrod assisted in the creation of ‘Cirque du Soleil’s “KOOZA” performance and toured as their percussionist and “Skeleton Dance” soloist for fi fteen months.

The year’s 2008 and 2009 saw multiple festival appearances with Manooghi Hi including Seattle’s Bumbershoot, the Oregon Country Fair and Austin’s prestigious SXSW. Manooghi Hi opened up 2010 with back-to-back appearance at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Saturday, July 17, Eugene’s Only Nightmares headlines a fi ve band bill of Oregon hard rock and metal. University of Oregon Campus Radio welcomes the show, which also features performances by Necryptic, Stonecreep, Ditch Digger and Omnihility.

Only Nightmares is a fi ve-piece heavy metal band, plain and simple. Their music includes ground-stomping riffs, thunderous drumming, classic NWOBHM melodies, slippery solos and vocals as versatile as their music. Combine all these things and they are sure to devastate you live or recorded.

Only Nightmares plays heavy metal the way it should be played: raw, emotional, unhinged and aggressive with a sampling of all the things a human should think of when they hear the phrase “heavy metal”. The band has also just fi nished recording a seven track EP that is set to be out this winter.

Necryptic is a four-piece progressive death metal band. Since emerging from the Eugene underworld in 2004, they have been making a name for themselves with their brutal, no-holds-barred musical style and extensive self-promotion. With intricate rhythms, searing solos and quick changes, their music stays focused and to-the-point.

Necryptic’s machine-like precision and complex, technical interpretation of extreme music will instantly grab the attention of even the harshest of critics. They are destructive to the senses, unrelenting, dark and confronting. Demonic vocals fi ll your head with low guttural growls and intense screams, defi nitely not the kind of music for a peace, love and nature type of event. Merciless unwavering brutality crunches through your bones with visceral force. Fast,

unpredictable guitar patterns and dynamic, widely varied song structure help give Necryptic a unique sound, unmatched by other death-metal acts. This highly refi ned sound along with intense high-energy stage performances has earned them respect up and down the West Coast.

The Deathmarch Crushes On…the album title says it all. Stonecreep is a band that has seen many ups and downs. Despite it all, after more than half a decade, the band continues to soldier forward.

Stonecreep’s story begins in the midwestern city of Fargo, North Dakota with four musicians whose prime goal was to make metal the way it was intended: raw, uncompromising, and above all bombastic and fun, the way the pioneers of the genre did it. One by one the members of the group migrated to Portland, Oregon and Stonecreep was born.

The band quickly won over audiences with their super high-energy stage shows and a unique style that can only be described as “ultra-epic thrash n’ roll”. They recorded and released three independent albums: Keep the Hammer Down, Tonight We Ride, and We Bleed Disaster. Each recording displayed a sophistication and musical progression over the one that preceded it. Tonight… and …Disaster both appeared in Brave Words & Bloody Knucklesannual Top 10 Unsigned/Demo Releases list and all three CD’s have received rave reviews from the world’s top metal publications.

In 2009 Stonecreep entered the studio with producer/engineer Stephan Hawkes to record The Deathmarch Crushes On. The album is without a doubt the band’s fi nest

work to date. Using all of the musical tools at their disposal, Deathmarch is a lethal cocktail of crunching guitars, thunderous drums and bass, soaring leads and a passionate, multifaceted vocal approach. Metal Maniacsmagazine may have said it best when they described the band as, “cock-rockin’ banger fuel that’s perfect for the bar, car or air guitar anytime.”

Ditch Digger was born in the summer of 2008 as a side project for members of Portland’s hard core band Proven and a local music promoter. After releasing the single “Begin” and playing a few shows, the response for the band grew and so did the love of the music that was being written. In 2009 the members of Proven quit that band to focus more time and energy on Ditch Digger.

With a demand from fans (from the States to Germany) the band is now in the studio (With Cory Parkison and Chris Finster) recording their debut CD aptly titled Begin. Staying true to their “Do it yourself” attitude, Ditch Digger will release the album on their own label and push it through internet outlets and their shows!

Omnihility formed from the disbanding of Submortal as Dan (Soulscythe) and Robbie (In the Name of God) continued jamming and writing faster and heavier deathmetal. “Our goal is to push ourselves as musicians and punish listeners with an onslaught of brutality.” The addition of Jeremy (Midnight Empire, Ladon) on six-string bass and Ben (Noctagious) on vocals completed the lineup. The band’s six-song self titled EP ushers in a new level of sonic complexity, speed and unbridled aggression.

Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★

On Friday, July 16, the CCPA and University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcome back The Aggrolites along with Eugene’s The T Club.

The Aggrolites carry a banner — one created with their own hands. This banner reads “Dirty Reggae” and represents their signature fusion of reggae, soul, grit and determination. For seven years, this dirty reggae bunch has rolled from city to city, across the pond and up main street USA. The people come, they relish in The Aggrolites, the dirty reggae and the joy that comes with it all. The liberating rhythms and catchy grooves demand a return trip.

Out of the Los Angeles school of hard knocks, The Aggrolites have earned a Ph.D. in “feel good music.” On the road they educate with the thunder and punch of the reggae drums and bass, the ripping, soulful melodies of the organ

and guitars, and Jesse Wagner’s voice — a gift from the heavens, a perfectly intact gift from Otis, Sam, Ray and Wilson.

The Aggrolites have a specifi c way of making music. They don’t over think it, they don’t obsess over pop culture demands, they walk onto a stage or into a recording studio and let “it” happen — a culmination of inspiration — from the road, from playing alongside legends, and from the energy and motivation of their die hard fans.

Their new album is called IV. It is a defi nitive chapter in The Aggrolites journey with 21 tracks; each one a story of their struggle to thrive and their quest to spread soulful music around the globe. They have three other full-length albums to their credit — Dirty Reggae (Axe 2003), The Aggrolites (Hellcat 2006) and Reggae Hit L.A. (Hellcat 2007), featuring the hit “Free Time”.

The Aggrolites are well represented in fi lm, television and

video games. Their songs have been featured in NBC’s Friday Night Lights, MTV’s The Hills, Nick Jr.’s Yo Gabba Gabba, USA’s Dr. Steve-O, MavTV’s Rad Girls, the award-winning surf fi lm The Pursuit, and Australian video game Cricket. Their renditions of The Specials’ “Ghost Town” and Musical Youth’s “Pass The Dutchie” are heard in the teen surf comedy Endless Bummer, and “Free Time” is in the musical-romantic comedy Band Slam.

The Aggrolites have shared the stage with Social Distortion, Madness, Rancid, Flogging Molly, 311, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Dropkick Murphys, The Vandals, Against Me!, Gogol Bordello, The Aquabats, Hepcat, The Skatalites, Prince Buster and Derrick Morgan.

Since 1999, The T Club has been spreading good vibes with good music. Voted the WOW Hall’s Best New Act of 2008, they only get better with each performance.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

Fresh from bringing their New Orleans funk to Main Stage at the Oregon Country Fair, Russell Batiste & Friends ft. Willie Soul Singer hit the WOW Hall stage on Tuesday, July 13.

David Russell Batiste, Jr. was born on December 12, 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a member of one of N’awlins legendary musical families, Russell Batiste Jr. knows his way around a sound stage. He’s played multiple instruments, and has been at the drum kit since the age of four. Even before that, Russell recalls watching his daddy, David Batiste (of the city’s seminal funk band David Batiste and the Gladiators), jam with an endless array of the city’s most talented musicians. That band hosted a virtual “Who’s Who” of ’60s musicians. One of Russell’s earliest memories is sitting on Jackie Wilson’s knee listening to him sing “Lonely Teardrops”!

Russell joined the Funky Meters in 1989 and has played with a wide variety of performers, including Harry Connick Jr., Champion Jack DuPree, Joe Krown Trio, Page McConnell,

Robbie Robertson, Phish, Widespread Panic and Maceo Parker. He played the WOW Hall in February, 2008, as one-third of the group PBS (Porter, Batiste, Stoltz).

Russell Batiste & Friends consists of Russell Batiste Jr. on drums, Bill Richards on bass, Phill Breen on keyboard and Seizo Shibayama on guitar. They play uptown New Orleans music at its craziest, with a selection that ranges from funk to classical. Special guest Willie Soul Singer will being joining the band on

vocals as they perform selections from Russell’s new album, Follow Your Dreams.

Mimzy LeMar Productions hosts this special post-Fair event, with all profi ts dedicated to relief of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and are available at the WOW Hall Booth at the Oregon Country Fair (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, July 9, 10, 11, 11:00 am - 7:00 pm) or online at www.ticketweb.com. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 8:30. ★

This will be the WOW Hall’s fourth year hosting the very successful Music’s Edge Rock Camp. Each camp goes full-steam all week and ends with a full-blown, rockin’ show, with all the lights and sound that would make any rock star proud. The two “gigs” will be Friday, July 19 and August 13, at 7:30 pm. And both camps will have a second performance that will take place at the Eugene Saturday Market directly following the camps (7/24 and 8/14) from 2-3 pm.

“It’s meant to be life changing to some degree,” reports the Eugene Register Guard. ”It can take a lifetime to learn some of these skills.”

Music’s Edge at the WOW Hall is interested in all skill levels and all instruments. Tim McLaughlin, bandleader of the acclaimed group Eleven Eyes, heads up a very pro staff that includes Zak Johnson, Ehren Ebbage, John Shipe and daily special guests. Music’s Edge will feature different workshops each day with music industry professionals and performers.

Notes the Register Guard: “In an age when reality TV show contests spotlight the glamour of the music business, the camp participants seem focused on the right things.”

“Tim McLaughlin is the best band leader I’ve ever met. He knows how to control a group this size and rein it in. “ - Music’s Edge Rocker

The Instructors :

Tim McLaughlin is a multi-instrumentalist and sought-after area musician, active in recording, teaching, performing and composing. Since graduating from the U. of O. School of Music in 2002, McLaughlin has appeared on numerous recordings, as well as toured the western U.S. multiple times. McLaughlin currently performs with Eleven Eyes, Everyone Orchestra, Halie Loren, Son Melao, The Essentials, NOW! Trio, and as a solo artist. As a music educator, McLaughlin hosts a full private teaching studio, co-directs the Willamette H.S. Jazz Program, directs the Marcola School District music program, conducts weekly clinics, workshops and classes, and directs multiple jazz/rock ensembles. McLaughlin has been a strong advocate for supporting youth in music by helping to develop the Kidz Rock music series as well as developing and directing Music’s Edge at the WOW Hall.

Ehren Ebbage has been playing and teaching music professionally for more than a decade. A graduate of the University of Oregon School of Music, Ehren has toured the U.S. many times, has written, recorded, and performed with numerous national and international artists, and has released two recordings of his own material.

Zak Johnson has played music professionally for eleven years and has taught for six, working with students privately and at such institutions as OFAM/AMI and Lesson Factory. He is an accomplished songwriter and musician and plays guitar, upright bass and electric bass in various groups, including the U. of O. Gospel Ensemble, the West Coast Rhythm Kings and his own rock group, The Dead Americans, touring extensively throughout the West Coast. He’s worked with Tim McLaughlin since the beginning of the Music’s Edge camps, and his emphasis on ear training and improvisation helps students hone their skills as live performers.

John Shipe has an original 200-plus song repertoire, 15 years of touring, radio airplay and nine recording projects. Thirty John Shipe tunes have played on one hundred independent and commercial radio stations, without the support of a major record label. John Shipe combines his massive experience into a great teaching style that is fun and like no music education that can be found elsewhere. ★

Music’s Edge Summer Rock CampOn Thursday, July 15, the CCPA and U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcome the Swingin’ Utters to our ballpark with special guests The Cute Lepers and Eugene’s own Pirate Radio.

San Francisco’s biggest and best punk band, the Swingin’ Utters, step up to the plate with their latest release, Brand New Lungs. The Utters deliver music brimming with the passion and desperation the genre is known for without the use of corny gimmicks, posturing or steroids.

The Swingin’ Utters have amassed an impressive discography consisting of eight full-lengths, a B-Sides (2008’s Hatest Grits) and countless EP’s, singles and splits. Brand New Lungs marks the fi rst release of new material by the venerable street punk legends in seven years. With a new full-length already recorded and due out in the fall, the band decided to whet the appetite of fans by releasing a 7” containing some of the new material. Brand New Lungs features three brand new songs, two of which will appear on the upcoming full-length and one that is exclusive to this release. All three tracks exude the trademark sound that the Utters have made famous and will have their fans clamoring for more.

It all started for the Utters back in 1995 with their fi rst acclaimed full length The Streets of San Francisco. The band received two Bammy’s (Bay Area Music Awards), including best debut album, and they were invited to join the fi rst Warped Tour.

Fat Wreck Chords grabbed the Utters in 1996 in time to release the classic punk record A Juvenile Product of the Working Class. Considered by many as one of the best punk records of the 90’s, Juvenile Product sent the Utters into a touring frenzy of the U.S. and Europe with bands like Mighty Mighty Bosstones, NOFX and Social Distortion. Years of hard work and quality releases have fi rmly established them as the torchbearers of the Oi/streetpunk scene. They further bolstered their lineup by adding Spike from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes to give them yet another vocalist.

As well as being classed as a rock, street punk and even Oi band, reminiscent of British ‘70s bands, Swingin’ Utters have increasingly shown themselves to be infl uenced by traditional Irish, American country, folk and reggae. Without straying from their proletariat roots and blue-collar attitude, the Utters manage to maintain a nearly impossible level of respect from a culture that generally despises any shifts toward mainstream popularity.

Band members are: Johnny Bonnel (vocals), Darius Koski (guitar, vocals ), Greg Mcentee (drums ), Spike Slawson (bass ) and Jack Dalrymple (guitar).

Formed by Steve E. Nix in 2007, The Cute Lepers create the crisp, catchy punk numbers that you would normally expect from ex-members of The Briefs and include more narrative lyrics, heavy use of female back up vocals, and pop embellishes that unabashedly display their harmonic vibe.

The Cute Lepers have played every club in Seattle, damn near every club on the West Coast, and circled the US repeatedly. Their sophomore record, Smart Accessories, continues with more of the tuneful energy that earned their debut full length the attention of Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records, Damaged Goods Records, and 1-2-3-4 Go! Records and made an appearance on several DJ’s top list of 2008, including Seattle’s own KEXP.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $13 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★
