Recently, we have had vandalism that affect our monuments by the clubhouse and the pool/clubhouse area. On Christmas Eve night the holiday decoration wreaths installed on the main monuments were stolen. But someone also destroyed the lights for the monuments and some of the lights around the pool area. The estimate amount of damages is $5,000. This incident has been turned into the Sheriff's Department and to our insurance company. We wanted to let all residents know about this incident so that if any suspicious activity is observed around the clubhouse/pool area or the monuments in the future that the Sheriff Department be contacted. Wortham Villages

I have a love/hate relationship with Valentines Day. Firstly because I never know whether to put an apostrophe in the name or not. Does the day belong to Saint Valentine? Does it belong to the actual valentines? Who knows? Does anyone even care about apostrophes besides me?

Then, there’s the day itself. If you’re single, there’s this expectation that there will be thin, attractive people to date who will give you cards and gifts and candy on Valentine’s Day. Not so much. I didn’t get married until my mid-thirties, so, trust me, Valentine’s Day usually consisted of me, the TV, and a big bag of Cheetos. There were a lot of non-fun Valentine’s Days in there, with the absolute lowest point coming in 1993, when my boyfriend Brian broke up with me ON Valentine’s Day. He got me a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card, which softened the blow a little, but still. Dude. Breaking up ON Valentine’s Day. Rough.

Even when you’re married, Valentine’s Day can be hard, especially if you’re married to someone who believes Valentine’s Day is a fake holiday created by Hallmark. Which, um, a friend of mine is. The importance of this holiday was forcibly brought home to her husband the first year they were married, when his wife gave him a valentine and then started crying when she realized he hadn’t gotten her a valentine. So, that was

a fun day. This friend’s husband also learned not to proudly announce how cheaply he acquired her present, as this was not received well.

Valentine’s Day these days is a pretty low-key affair. We don’t go out to eat, because we don’t enjoy crowds or waiting ninety minutes for a table and an hour for our food. We either order a heart-shaped pizza or have fondue because nothing says “I love you” like sliced bananas dipped in melted chocolate. My mouth is watering a little bit right now just writing about it.

My husband usually gets me something from Vickie Lynn’s, which is conveniently located four doors down from a comic book shop, and I get him a cactus. Don’t look for symbolism there – he just likes cacti. If I want flowers, I wait till February 15th, and go to Kroger and buy an arrangement at fifty percent off.

My children believe every holiday is a gift-giving occasion, and have taken to creating Valentine’s Day wish lists, for heaven’s sake. We have with difficulty convinced them that while they may receive some small token of our parental affection on Saint Valentine’s Day, all they are getting for Saint Patrick’s Day is a baked potato.
