Worldwide Trade Definition – The worldwide trade is intergovernmental organization which regulate international trade related to medicinal plant.

The term “Medicinal Plant” for worldwide trade specifies the plant having medicinal value.

It proved as the plant having as therapeutic value. The main difficulty in analyzing the world trade in herbal drug is

extremely limited statistical data available on production trade. No country publish their data & trade except USA provide the

production detail.

The wide spread popularity towards the traditional medicines in Asia, Europe and USA has induced high growth and development in the world wide trade of medicinal plant.

The US market for medicinal plant extract in 1999 was estimated approximately US$ 500 million which is equivalent to about 25% of global market.

Global market in herbal medicines was estimated as fallows-1. In 1994 estimate was US$12.4 billion it was increasing in 1

up to US$19.6 billion in 1999.2. In 2002 estimate was grow about US$24.2 billion it has

grown up to US$ 62 billion in 2002.

In India approximately 1800 plant species are use in AYURVEDA in which 1. 600 species for Siddha.2. 400 species for Unani.3. More than 400 species for Homoeopathic. Trade from South Africa

In 1995-96 about 20000 metric tones of medicinal plant material with approximate vale of US$60 million and finished product of worth US$ 215.6 million were traded from South Africa.

The following are medicinal plant from South Africa having place in international trade

Chile export the about US$20 million of medicinal plant in 1994 major of which is Quillaja saponaria amounting to US$ 80000.

Other import exported from Chile plant were peumus boldus, Origanum majorana, rosa perruna and smilax medica.

The major export was to Brazil to Argentina. the total export during the year 1992-1994 reaches to 10000-11000 metric tones/year.

In Pakistan more than 55000 Traditional Medical Practitioners (TMPs) serve over 70-80% of population using their own prescription .

Crude plant based drugs worth about US$ 120 million are annually in Pakistan.

As per the International Trade Center (ITC) information as far back as 1967, the global value of global import of the medicinal plant for pharmaceutical industry was about US$ 52.9 million which was rise to US$ 72.1 million

From 1987-1991 the average value of worldwide trade in medicinal plant reached to US$ 853 billion.

Generally the trade has shown upward trend except for the year 1990 when it dipped slightly followed by again uprising trend from US$ 1.3 billion to nearly US$ 1.4 billion

Europe, USA and Japan are the biggest consumer markets of medicinal plant materials.

Europe, Germany, France, Italy and Spain are the major importing market for medicinal plant.

The annual turn over of these countries is about US$ 142 million during 1991-1997 and import 46000 metric tones.

Diosgenin Is major raw material use in synthesis of Carticosteriods, Sex hormones and Anti-fertility compound. Major production from Mexico and while the

total production of diosgenin India is about 100 tones. The value in Indian market is Rs.10/kg

Senna It consist of dried , green leaves of Cassia acutifolia and Cassia angustifolia. The chief center of trade in India are Mumbai,

Madurai and Calcutta. Major supplier of leaves is India .It had export

about 6000 tones valued about 35 lakh rupees. Presently, India export is more than 10000 tons

of drug valued Rs. 50.00/Kg
