WRAWBY PARK UPDATE

A big THANK YOU goes to Dave Hunt and his colleagues from Scottish and Southern Energy ( S SE ) , who on Wednesday 11th June, as part of their Community at Heart project, came out and painted the remaining park equipment, cut down some of the bushes and installed a new bench. Thank you all for your time, effort and enthusiasm! The park is looking amazing and if we are successful with our funding bid then things will look even better! We have been keeping our fingers crossed now since April, so let ’ s hope we find out soon because our fingers are killing us!!!! We will update you as soon as we hear anything Thanks Angela and Kirby

Wrawby WI

The June meeting of Wrawby WI included a demon-stration by a Wrawby local, Michelle O'Brien who edu-cated us in the art of cupcake decorating and the win-ners of the raffle were treated to some of Michelle's handiwork in the shape of a splendid cake. The 16 July meeting features local doctor, Dr Clare Chambers who will give a talk on "Post Menopause" - something we all have to face sooner or later, with all the treats and trials that it has in store for us. If you are interested come and join us at the Village Hall at 8pm.

I confess I have never placed an entry in Wrawby Horticultural Society’s Annual Show. I live in Wrawby, so I’m automatically a member – but it’s just that, well... never mind. I’m sure your excuses are better than mine! But maybe times are changing. It’s not because I’m suddenly passionate about growing prize vegetables. It’s because the days of cheap supermarket shopping and con-venience foods may be coming to an end. You’ll know the reasons. The number of human beings on this planet continues to grow. China and India are becoming wealthier; so they want their share of what’s available. The days when we in Western Europe and the

USA could indulge ourselves at the expense of the rest of the world are clearly coming to an end.

I still have the war-time Ration Book that my parents had for me when I was a child. I can remember my mother handing over to-kens in order to buy her entitlement of sugar and butter from the grocer in the village. I also vividly remember my grandfather in his garden in Kent, going with him to collect eggs from the hen-house, and then helping him to harvest (and then shell) fresh peas for

lunch.

The war-time slogan had been ‘Dig for Victory’. Every corner of every garden was to be commandeered for growing vegetables. Many Horticultural Societies and their annual shows were started during this period. People helped each other with seeds and cut-

tings and tools, and shared the produce.

I was recently asked how I would feel if, because of the increased global demand for food, rationing came back, not just as a war-time emergency measure, but permanently. How would you react? Would it be an infringement of your freedom, your human rights?

Or would it be part of a much deeper questioning about how human beings relate to the natural world of which we are a part?

Almost instinctively, all the world’s great religions address this question in similar ways. Human beings can’t stand outside the world as though we are God. Valuing ourselves for what we can take out of the world, for what we consume (and building an economy on it) is in the longer term a recipe for disaster. “The earth was not made for man; man was made for the earth.” (Chief Seattle) “From

dust you were made; to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3)

The problem is that we all like gratifying ourselves in the short term. We all like indulging ourselves – and if that means going into debt (so we’ve been told), that’s not a problem. “Access takes the waiting out of wanting” was the slogan when we were first

tempted to have credit cards!

But the technical term for all this wanting is ‘greed’. You can’t build a sustainable and healthy world on greed. On this basis today’s ‘credit crunch’ was inevitable. But, as the war-time gardeners of England discovered, you can live sustainably when you are ready to share. And in God’s economy, those who learn how to look after the soil from which all our food comes are the ones most likely to

have enough and to spare.
