• Wrong management and relationship regarding the puppies

• Low number of animal shelters in regions
• No statistical information regarding stray dog population

Problems
• 31 samples of stray animals were tested for rabies in 2015-2017, rabies was confirmed in 19 clinical (61%).
• Each year 20-25% of animals bit humans are stray animals

• 3 animal shelters were built
• Sterilization, identification, vaccination and other activities are conducted in animals in shelters
• Stray animal quantity was counted in Tbilisi (capital)

• Collaborations with NFA and shelters management was improved
• Prophylactic vaccination of 10 000 stray animals was conducted
• Number of stray animal samples was increased for laboratory testing

Plan of actions is elaborated for each shelter:
• Dog catching teams

• Rabies is endemic in Georgia
• Around 250000 pets (dogs and cats) are vaccinated
• Number of rabies cases in animals was decreased and their were no human rabies cases for 3 years

National strategy for control and elimination for rabies was developed by veterinary department (under discussion)

Evaluation and plans for future
• Georgia is partially compliant with OIE standards for control of stray animals at this stage
support:
• Possibility for conducting oral vaccination in stray animals
• Determining the type virus, based on rabies positive clinical samples
• Guideline for 10 day monitoring over bitten animals
