A smart grid is an architecture (NETWORK ENGINEERING) and infrastructure (CONTROL SYSTEMS) that allows continuous monitoring (TWO-WAYS COMMUNICATION) of customers, facilities and operations. However, data volume is not the same as information. One of the keys of smart grids is the provision of tools (BUSINESS APPLICATIONS) that automatically convert the data into valid information.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGES AND BARRIERS INTEGRATING BUILDINGS IN COMMUNITIES
Potential of ICTs to improve energy efficiency in the residential sector to aid integration of buildings in communities: EMS (understood like a piece of Smart Grid)
Energy Management Systems (EMS) => building integration
From the technical and technological point of view the objectives and challenges are:
To measure energy, gas and water consumption in building and dwellings.
To show on-line energy information through ICT (Multiple Front End, Open Protocols)
Integration of Renewable energies, including the real time data of VPP, Solar and Wind
Generation, managing the energy balance.
Maturity of equipment (from a market perspective) : off-the-shelf?
Variety of equipment: to give response to an assortment of cases.
