Summary Although construction offers numerous careers, there continues to be a

critical skills shortage.

Fewer people have entered the industry over time as construction-related

careers have not been popular.

As a result, the recruitment of women into the construction workforce has

long been identified as a potential solution to overcome the labor

shortage.

Unfortunately much remains to be done to encourage young women into

this field.

Page 4: Workforce Development Panel Presentation - SCOAR€¦ · Summary According to a 2014 Department of Labor report, over 9 million people work in the construction industry, yet only

Summary According to a 2014 Department of Labor report, over 9 million people work in

the construction industry, yet only 8.9% are women.

To attract female participation in the construction workforce on the same levels of female participation in sectors such as healthcare, education and finance, educating females about career opportunities when they are young is important.

Central Six Development Council Alabama Workforce Council Region 4, Girl’s Inc. of Central Alabama, Robins & Morton and AIDT/AWTC formed a collaborative partnership to present “Power UP: It’s a Mother Daughter Thing!” This was the first annual event dedicated to educate, engage and encourage girls to explore career opportunities in the construction industry.
