DEFINATION• Work Life Balance is a concept including proper prioritizing between work

(Career ambitions) and Lifestyle (Health, pleasure, leisure, family and Spiritual development/meditation)

• It is about effectively managing the juggling act between paid work and other activities that are important to you including spending time with family, taking part in sports, volunteering activities among others.

• Balance is like a see saw is elusive and difficult to maintain.

• Compromises are always made with the scales of balance shifting along with occasional long working day or work assignment, family obligations or any one life little surprises.

What Work Life Balance is Not

• Work Life balance does not mean that there must be equal balance across all aspects of individual life. Trying to schedule an equal number of hours for each of your various work and personal activities is unrewarding and unrealistic.

• The optimum work balance will not remain static but will vary overtime. The right balance for you today will be probably be different for you tomorrow. For instance the right balance for you when you are single will be different when you marry.

• The best work life balance will be different for each person. There is no size that fits all. The best work life balance is different for each of us because we all have different priorities and different lives.

• The best work life balance has key aspects that we should strive to achieve daily Achievement and Enjoyment

SYMPTOMS OF UNBALANCE

• 1. Physical-Headache, upset stomach, sleep disturbance, changes in appetite, muscle tension, fatigue, heart palpitations.

• 2. Emotions- Depressions, anxiety, irritability, difficulty in making decisions, angry outbursts, resentment and feeling of powerlessness,

• 3. Personal- Lost time with friends and loved ones, isolation, stopping social activities, relationship loss/difficulties, self meditating.

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE BALANCE

1. Simplify- Be selfish to yourself, learn to say NO, no one is indispensable, stay at home, listen to music, chill out.

Being a good employee, spouse, parent and friend doesn’t mean blindly giving into everyone’s else demand and spending all your time and energy doing for others as they dictate.

2. Share the load- Divide the house hold chores at home, at work delegate, ensure you share the responsibilities to make things lighter.

3. Slow down

- Do not be pulled from different directions,

- Take one step at a time

- Discover new ways to get things done

4. Take care of your health

- Work without play make Jack a dull boy

- Take a walk, go to the gym

- Well balanced diet

- Do not procrastinate

- Avoidance takes much energy than actually doing it.

6. Have a positive approach

- Look around you, so many things to be grateful of.

- Make a list of things you are thankful of

- Understand that something's are beyond your control

8. Be Organized

-Try to manage your day, instead of having the day manage you. Disorganization is theft of time

9. Focus on whatever you are doing

Maximize your productivity at work and don’t let unfinished business carry over to your personal life.

Always put in your best effort…. Even if it is not your core competence.

10. Know your weakness and strength

- Improve your skills necessary to enhance your productivity and reduce stress.

11. Be forgiving especially to yourself

-You are human. You will make mistakes and fall short of the ideal, including your own. Do not wallow in guilt, learn from your mistakes.

• 1. Take time for yourself- This may sound difficult for people who believe they are in very responsible position and head the families. Find opportunities within the busy schedule.

• 2. Take frequent short breaks from work and holidays

• 3. Establish good supportive relationships both at work and at home

- Understand your colleagues better, assist each one another

4. Pamper yourself-Spend a couple of hours relaxing, play with the children or cook, sleep 7-8 hours in a day.

• Life is a balance too much or too little can kill. The best way to balance life is by finding the balance that works for you, celebrate your success and don’t dwell on your failures.

• Work to live but don’t live to work.

• Life is a process….and so is striving for balance in your life.
