Words of Welcome from Peter AltmaierFederal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy
Last year, offshore windpower capacity off the German coast reached approx. 6.4 gigawatts. This means that Germany has already come close to reaching its target for 2020. At the same time, the cost of offshore wind power generation has fallen considerably. This became impressively clear in the transitional auctions that took place for installations due to start operating between 2021 and 2025 – auc-tions that were won by operators using a minimal amount of public funding.
Offshore wind energy is already contribut-ing a great deal to the energy transition. We already know that it will continue to grow in importance and will play an important part in the future energy mix designed to allow Germany to reach its renewables target of 65% of the country’s electricity consumption by 2030.
It is important for renewables capacity and grid capacity to grow in sync, so that the energy transition can take place as cost-efficiently as possible. The Federal Government has laid the groundwork for
this, including by publishing its Electricity Grid Action Plan.
Innovation is also a key factor for the suc-cess of the energy transition and also for the competitiveness of German suppliers on fast-growing international markets. This is why the Federal Government is a proponent of testing and demonstrations and has lent its support for the plans for an offshore test field, which – following the amendment of the Grid Expansion Acceleration Act – can now be connected up to the grid.
I wish all participants of Windforce 2019 engaging discussions and a successful event

A warm welcome from
Andreas Wellbrock, WAB e.V. and Irina Lucke, EWE Offshore Service & Solutions and WAB e.V.
Dear WINDFORCE participants,
we look forward to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the WINDFORCE Conference with you. These days, the 11th National Maritime Conference takes place in Friedrichshafen. Let us take this unique opportunity to send our strong message from the North Sea coast to the political representa-tives and decision makers: Offshore Wind is the foundation of the German energy transition. Bremerhaven is an essential pillar of the Offshore Wind Energy Industry. The expansion of Offshore Wind must be increased to at least 35 gigawatts by the year 2035, so that we can maintain our lead role also internationally.
We have to face the future: If other sec-tors in Germany become electrified, we will need more energy. That’s why the energy system transformation has to be urgently and courageously thought further ahead. A strategy must be developed which considers the trans-formation in a holistic approach - for us
and for our children who are currently organizing the spectacular #Fridaysfor-Future campaign.
With this year´s WINDFORCE Conference we would like to contribute to this approach and are very pleased to offer you a pioneering program. For the first time, there will be a partner country, the Netherlands, which is pushing ahead the regional and national energy transformation. In addition, the ses-sions and discussions will focus strongly on forward-looking topics such as wind energy based hydrogen production, which is also known as “from electron to molecule”.
We are looking forward to exchange views and experiences with you and to spend two inspiring days in Bremer-haven!
Andreas Wellbrock Irina Lucke
