    INTRODUCTION

This document provides lists of Chariot era armies. They are best played against each

other, though the points costs are consistent with all the armies in the main book, so

you can intermingle them if you wish.

My thanks to Olaf Behrens, Jim Clarke and Jean-Baptiste Folley for their assistancewith proof reading- this was a truly multinational effort!

    CREATING ARMIES

    ARMY SIZE

A 2,800 point army created from these lists will be the same approximate size as a

2,000 point army created from a period supplement. On the common 6 x 4 foot table

size, armies of 2,400 points will give plenty of room for flanking manoeuvres.

    GENERALS

All armies should have a general, though this is not compulsory unless the army listspecifies otherwise. This can be either a general character as listed, or a senior officer,

who can be upgraded to make use of the Army General  special rule for +50 points.

    UNIT LEADERS

Unless the list specifies otherwise, any formed unit may have a leader, standard bearer

and musician at +5 points each. However Light Infantry units that choose to skirmish

in an engagement may not make use of their standard bearer or musician for the

duration, should they have them. Skirmish units may only have a leader.

    SPECIAL RULES

Any special rule applying to the troops is written in italics, e.g. S tubborn.

    ALLIES AND MERCENARIES

Any troops listed as “Allies and Mercenaries” must obey the  Allies and Mercenaries

(Unreliable) special rule, unless the individual list states otherwise.

Where an army is stated to be able to take allies from another list, then the allied

contingent can include characters from that other list, including an army general if

desired. That general has no effect on troops from the main “host” list.

    CHARACTERS MOUNTED ON MODELS

When a character is mounted on a chariot or an elephant, both models will shoot andfight. For example an Egyptian Pharaoh mounted in a light chariot will have four

shots (Pharaoh and chariot warrior, both firing twice) and four attacks (two from

Pharaoh and two from the chariot warrior).

A character so mounted benefits from the armour save of the model he is mounted on,

    if better than his own.

    1. SUMERIAN & AKKADIAN

    2500 BC to 1800 BC

Sumer was a collection of city states in Southern Iraq, eventually controlled by a “Lugal” or king. The

states waged war against each other and the surrounding peoples. The Akkadians were a distinct group

from central Iraq, which rose under Sargon to defeat and subjugate Sumer by 2100 BC and form the first

known empire, though it suffered from constant internal revolt and incursions by nomads and the

     Elamites.

    2. OLD KINGDOM EGYPTIAN

    2500 BC to 1600 BC

The army of Egypt from the early dynasties until the widespread use of chariots, copied from the Hyksos

who conquered northern Egypt in about 1800 BC and were later ejected. The army is a contemporary of

Sumer, but there was no interaction in a military sense at least.

    3. ELAM

    2500 BC to 700 BC

The Kingdom of Elam in south-west Iran was known to Sumer and remained a powerful entity until

weakened by its wars with Assyria and eventual fall to the Persians, under whom its capital of Susa

continued to be an important city. Elam was initially a foe of Babylon but later came to be its ally against

     Assyria.

Chariots: Elamite chariots are Heavy Chariots but have only one crewman, a driver armed with a hand

    weapon.

Archers: Light Infantry. A unit of archers chosen from this section has the Riding Horses special rule.

Such a unit can also be transported by a chariot unit; each chariot can convey 3 archers, who may shoot

once (not twice) per turn from the chariot, but may not fight from it. (i.e. in combat only the chariot

crews, not the passengers, may fight). The archer unit may dismount during the remaining moves phase,

taking half a move to do so.

    4. LIBYAN

    2500 BC to 500 BC

The tribes of North Africa were the original inhabitants of the Nile delta region and kin to the Egyptians.

They were both a constant nuisance and a source of mercenaries to the Egyptian Pharaohs. They posed

the greatest danger when acting in concert with the Sea Peoples, and The New Kingdom fought three

major wars against them. Eventually one of the most warlike tribes, the Meshwesh, was resettled in the Nile delta by agreement to provide a stable source of mercenary troops.

    2500 BC to 1900 BC

Nubia occupies the upper reaches of the Nile above upper Egypt and was the source of destructive raids

upon the civilised areas. Egypt gradually pushed its border further up river and Nubia was considered

annexed by 1900 BC, lost again during the Hyksos invasions and reconquered by 1100 BC, although the

tribes seem to have thought differently and continued to cause trouble for hundreds of years.

    6. HARAPPAN INDIAN

    2500 BC to 1500 BC

The civilisation of the Indus region in India was a contemporary of, and traded with, Sumer. While the

list is largely based on a few archaeological finds and much extrapolation, it provides an interesting

alternative early army. The civilisation withered after several crucial rivers changed course, depriving

the area of irrigation; the vacuum was filled by the arrival of the Aryans.

    8. EARLY BABYLONIAN

    2000 BC to 1300 BC

This is the army of Hammurabi and his successors, a regal line traced back to Amorite invaders of Akkad.

The empire was a shaky conglomerate of subordinate kings who had to be constantly pressured to remain

true to their allegiances. It was threatened by successive waves of nomad incursions and eventually fell tothe Kassites.

famous battle of Kadesh, a Hittite victory. The state finally succumbed to the Sea Peoples, although Neo-

    1600 BC to 950 BC

The Minoan culture controlled an island empire from Crete by sea power until its fall following the

devastating eruption of Thera in the fifteen century BC. The extent of its power can be judged by the fact

that its cities were not protected by walls. The early Myceneans spread from Greece through the islands

and into Anatolia, and filled the vacuum left by the Minoans. Both cultures fought in a similar way andthis list covers both until changes in fighting techniques in the years leading to the Trojan War.

This list covers the most famous of ancient conflicts, and the later armies of the Mycenean culture until it

Ideally armies should be a grouping of several heroes and their retinues. It seems that the earlier method

of fighting had not completely died out, so you can model old Nestor’s contingent, for example, by usingthe troop types from the earlier list.

    22. LATER BABYLONIAN

    750 BC to 500 BC

After its earlier period of greatness, Babylon found itself subservient to Assyria, sometimes as an

unwilling ally, sometimes as a protectorate. Babylonian forces fought against Assyria in a series of costly

rebellions, often in concert with Elamite allies. These were usually unsuccessful and the city of Babylonwas sacked on two occasions. A later alliance with the Medes and Scythians toppled a weakened Assyria

and Nineveh was sacked in 612 BC. The Babylonians went on to conquer most of the previous Assyrian

empire but they in turn fell before the rising power of Cyrus the Great in 539 BC.

    750 BC to 600 BC

The Kushite people occupied the area south of Nubia and were heavily influenced by Egyptian culture

Egypt, and their subsequent attempt to extend their control to the south prompted a Kushite invasion
