Word Learning Strategies & Resources

When learning new words, it is important that our children use different ways to help them to

remember the word and really understand the meaning of the word! Young people aged 12-17 years

can come across 10,000 new words over their Post-Primary years so it is important that new words

learned in an effective way!

This handout lists resources available on the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) website to

help children and young people effectively learn new words. These resources can be downloaded for

free using the below links. You can use these with your child in helping them to learn, remember &

revise new words.

be used by parents to support their child’s word learning. They can be used by the children and young

people themselves to keep a record or journal of new words they have learned to help in their revision.

Vocabulary Learning Strategy: The Frayer Model

The Freyer model is a useful way of teaching and learning new

words. It is a visual square map/organiser that helps the child and

young people to really understand the word and to think about

the word in different ways.

It is best if you use this grid first with basic words that your child might already know. Once your child

has practised using this map a number of times with common words, they could maybe use use it to

teach themselves words or even use it to revise words from their textbooks. The glossary in the front

or back of the textbook can be a good place to find words children and young people need to learn to

be able to understand the subject and textbook.

Example using the word

‘Perimeter’ from the

Mathematics subject:

There is a resource book available on the NCSE website that provides

advice on how to use this model and more examples. This resource also

includes blank templates of the model. The resource book was written for

teachers but as a parent you may find it useful to support the

development of your child’s vocabulary skills. This resource book can be

accessed on: https://www.nbss.ie/node/228.
