Once again the front page of this newsletter high-
lights some of the many achievements of our sport-
ing elite. Congratulations to all who are achieving
at such a high level.
There was so much positive activity on Kindness
Day held last Tuesday. Over 600 positive messag-
es of kindness were delivered over last week.
Thank you to our SMILE mentors for putting
together this innovative day.
Technology is an important part of a student’s
education at Woolgoolga High School. All students
in Year 7 complete a computing fundamentals
course giving the basic skills of the internet, word
processing and spreadsheets. Our school has just
completed the purchase of new laptop computers
for use by students who cannot afford to buy their
own device to bring to school. Another 200 devices
have been purchased and will continue to supple-
ment those students who cannot bring their own
device to school. A reminder the school provides
an internet service and students are encouraged to
Bring Your Own Device. Simply see Luis Vera in
the library to connect your device.
Mobile phones are becoming a problem at school
and many schools are beginning to ban mobile
phones from their school. Please do not ring or text
your child whilst they are in class. If students
answer their phone in class it will be confiscated
and given to the relevant Deputy Principal for the
student to pick up at the end of the school day.
From the Principal’s Desk
Congratulations to all Woolgoolga High students who are
achieving at such a high level in their respective sport!
If you need to contact your child urgently
please contact them through the office
explaining that it is an emergency. The
student will be contacted immediately.
On Friday 7 June, Woolgoolga High was
awarded first place in the Coffs Harbour
Dance Eisteddfod Secondary Schools
section. Thanks to Claire O'Halloran for her
guidance and support. Well done with top
commitment from the team! An article will be
published in the next newsletter.
Until next time

Head Lice
There have been reported cases of head lice at Woolgoolga High School. Please be
vigilant in checking your children’s hair, or asking them to check their own.
Head lice are one of the most commonly reported health complaints from parents and teachers.
Anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is.
Head lice move from one person's head to another via direct contact with the hair.
Head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head.
Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet.
Head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments.
There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence.
Symptoms and signs – the scalp itches. Lice and nits (eggs) are found on the scalp. Scratches
may become infected and swelling of the glands of the neck can occur. Nits look like tiny white
specks stuck to the hair.
It is not necessary to keep those in contact at home. You should inspect all close contacts
regularly for lice and nits. All other family members living in the same house should be treated
at the same time when you are treating the affected person and again a week later to ensure
complete removal.

Congratulations
Darcy Gibbons in Year 9 entered many projects
into the Coffs Show recently achieving numerous
awards for her work including the Most Successful
Junior Exhibitor. Darcy entered her bag which she
dyed and constructed in her textiles class this year. It
incorporated the skills of heliography a fabric dyeing
process using the sun's properties to create patterns;
hand embroidery, applique and general manufactur-
ing techniques to the construct bag. What a wonderful
achievement.

The TAS department has a prac teacher working
with Mrs Fluechter. Miss Estelle Strachan planned
and prepared an engaging lesson for Year 10 Food
Technology students teaching them about the
sensory characteristics of foods. All students
thoroughly enjoyed this lesson.
Food Technology
They learnt how senses such as aroma, taste, texture, and visual appeal affects their taste and
enjoyment of meals. They were involved in taste testing experiments, listening to case studies and
coming up with word banks which could be used to describe meals on menus.

Kindness Day
Tuesday, 4 June was Kindness Day at Woolgoolga High
School. Our SMILE Mentors put on a fantastic day
celebrating the kindness we have every day in the
school. There was live music, Kindness cards along with
a BBQ and Bake sale raising money for charity.
Mentors invited students to write a kind message to any
person in the school on special cards provided by
SMILE. Students had the option to leave their message
anonymous adding mystery and selflessness to their
message.
Mentors are now in the process of sorting over 600
messages of kindness, gratitude and encouragement to
be delivered over the coming days and weeks.
Congratulations to the Year 9 girls who ran the ‘Cakes
of Kindness’ bake sale and raised over $300. Students
chose whether the proceeds of their purchase would go
to Headspace or Happy Paws Haven Animal Rescue.
Congratulations to Woolgoolga High School students and staff for being so kind and a huge thank you to SMILE mentors for such a successful event.
Send in your stickers ... 2 boxes outside library to pop your stickers
in as well as one at our local Woolworths store... the more stickers
the more rewards for our students.
SMILE officially launched the Kind is Cool competition. Students can write about a
kind person they know and both will have a chance at winning a hoodie and t-shirts
from kindiscool.com, who have generously sponsored this event.

On Friday, 10 May the Woolgoolga High School CHS Tennis team played in the first round against
Bellingen High at the Woolgoolga courts. Our team comprising of Corey Pickett, Scott Priest, Robin
Worthing and Isaac Lee were unfortunately defeated, however, the sportsmanship shown from both
teams was commendable. Well done boys. Better luck next year!
Thanks to Bellingen High for travelling to play at our home courts and thanks also to Glenn Rook, of
Bayliss Tennis Academy who assisted in the trial and ranking of our team this year.

The Combined High School Squash competition was held on Wednesday, 22 May. Woolgoolga
High School entered a boys’ and girls’ team. The girls’ team consisted of Emma Nelson, Alicher
Fogarty and Carissa Byrnes. They played South Grafton in the first round and were one match away
from progressing to the next round. Although the girls had never played before they participated with
excellent sportsmanship and enthusiasm.
The boys’ team consisted of Sam Moriz, Oliver Gray, Jye Pursch and Ethan Pursch. The first round
against Toormina was played very well winning all their matches. The second round was against the
Senior College whose players were two to five years of age older than our players. It was inspira-
tional to see our team play with courage and determination against much older opponents. The
Woolgoolga High players were outstanding and came out victorious. This win continues Woolgoolga
High School’s impressive record at squash. The boys’ progress to the next round in the state knock-
out and also have the opportunity to trial for the North Coast opens team to play for the state title at
the end of term.
