Tuesday, 16th

February is our Year 7 parents (and

students) welcome sausage sizzle beginning at

5.00pm which will be followed by a BYOD (Bring

Your Own Device) information session in the Library

for parents of all students 7-12.

We have invited Elevate Education to deliver a quality

study skills program for our Years 7, 10, 11 and 12

students on 18th February. This event is a must for all

serious students and I am sure participation will add

to our students’ ATARS. I encourage all senior stu-

dents to be involved. There will be a parent session

from 6.30pm, all welcome. Last year’s parent event

was very well received. See the article on page 5 of

this newsletter for more information.

Our school is attracting more students and our num-

bers are steadily climbing. At last count we had 850

students. Please remember our school prides itself on

being a full school uniform school. Uniform guidelines

are outlined on page 11 of this newsletter.

Congratulations to Addisen Mallett who will be repre-

senting our region at the upcoming CHS State Cricket

Trials held at Sutherland on 15th to 18

th February.

Our School Plan is updated and enhanced every

year. Following input from community members and

parents at our P&C meeting, and after extensive con-

sultation with staff and many students, it has been

decided that we will aim to enhance our already very

high level HSC results.

Beginning on Wednesday 17th February, our library

and senior study area will be staffed by staff members

whose aim will be to mentor, give direction and

support, in fact whatever is needed to help all senior

students to achieve to the highest level academically.

The teachers who participate in the program have

extensive expertise in the HSC and gaining quality

results.

From the Principal’s Desk

I would like to begin this newsletter with a big welcome to our Year 7

students. They certainly looked smart and excited at our first major assem-

bly this week. From a teacher’s perspective it is also an exciting time with

their new young and fresh students, who over the next 6 years will mould

into fine young people.

Teachers will help students in creating quality assess-

ments throughout the year in preparation for tests. I

encourage all senior HSC and preliminary students to

attend. The time spent at this academic achievement

centre will no doubt make your preparation for the

HSC a much easier path. Already many of our top

students come to school and work in small groups

with key teachers. This academic enhancement

program will open these opportunities to all senior

students. Later the program may even be extended to

our junior students. The Academic Achievement

Centre will operate all periods 1 to 5 and during

breaks 1 and 2 every Wednesday, Week B.

Our school is looking forward to hosting the Science

and Engineering Challenge on 4th & 5

th April. Phillip

Dalton, Head Teacher Science, has worked in con-

junction with our local Rotary and Lions groups and

Newcastle University to make this day exciting, mem-

orable and provide educational opportunities that

focus on Science and Engineering for our local private

and public schools. It is expected that over 250

students will participate.

Many senior students are preparing for the upcoming

Lions Youth of the Year. I wish our Year 12 students

good luck!

Our first P&C meeting is on Tuesday 9th February at

6.30pm in the Common Room. Come along and enjoy

the friendly atmosphere, learn about and

support your school.

Have a great year!

Until next time

mation session in the Library for parents of all

students in years 7-12. BYOD parent information

"Bring your own device" (BYOD) refers to students

bringing a personally owned device to school for the

purpose of learning. A personally owned device is

any technology device brought into the school and is

owned by a student or the student's family.

In summary, the school suggests that students are

encouraged to bring a laptop that can connect to the

5GHZ School wireless network. Local suppliers have

these types of devices. Please inform your local sup-

plier that you require the device to be capable of

connecting to the 5GHZ Woolgoolga High School

network.

Elevate Education offers students practical skills based on fifteen years of research. There is a

lot of advice out there about study skills, and unfortunately a lot of myths that seem to make

sense on the surface. Elevate conducts rigorous research each year to work out what the top

students are actually doing, to make sure students get simple, practical and effective skills in

their workshops. Students are only required to bring pens/pencils. All other materials will be

provided.

Courses will be run for interested students in Years 7, 10 and 11in the morning; and Year 12

during Periods 4 and 5. The cost is only $10.00 for Year 7 and $17.00 for Years 10, 11 and

12. We would strongly encourage all senior students to maximise their learning opportunities

by attending these workshops.

On Thursday, February 18,

Woolgoolga High School is

pleased to offer students the

opportunity to benefit from a

series of seminars offered by

Elevate Education.

In the final week of last year, our

school had an international visitor

from the University of Arizona in the

United States, who came to look at

our LOTE program. Sheilah E. Nicholas

is a member of the Hopi Tribe. She

teaches graduate and undergraduate

classes in language and culture in education, teacher research, and Indigenous oral traditions. She came

into two of the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal language classes and taught a Hopi song to our students. Our

group Jindaaga Sisters also sang for her and were presented with books about the Hopi people.

TRAUMA PROGRAM

WHS students have been of-

fered the unique opportunity

to take part in the Royal

North Shore Hospital Trauma

Program (P.A.R.T.Y). An op-

portunity exists for some

students (15 years and over)

to attend the Coffs Harbour

Health Campus early next

year to participate in this

worthwhile program.

The RNSH will collaborate with Coffs

Harbour Trauma Service to deliver

this one day in-hospital trauma injury

prevention program.

The links below will give you and

your child some insight as to what

the program is about.

Please contact Mrs Kath Bear (Head

Teacher PDHPE) on 66541500 if

you would like to express an interest

in your child’s participation in the

P.A.R.T.Y program

The P.A.R.T.Y program is a dynamic and inter-

active injury prevention and health promotion

program designed for senior high school stu-

dents. It stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk Re-

lated Trauma in Youth.

The PARTY program aims to show the possible

consequences that can and do happen to people

who make risky choices. We would like to help

students recognise risk and make informed

choices about their behaviour in the future.

A full day is spent at CHHC with various trauma

services. Students will meet people that care for

trauma patients – paramedics, doctors, nurses,

allied health professionals and volunteers.

Through presentations, interviews and simulated

clinical scenarios, students will be exposed to

the painful journey of a trauma patient.

The program is available for WHS students on

23rd February at Coffs Harbour Health Campus

and is free of charge.

WHS welcomes students and parents to show their interest in this program by contacting Mrs Kath Bear (Head teacher PDHPE) on 6654 1500 or email [email protected].

NSW School Vaccination

Program 2016

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination

program.

In 2016 the following vaccines will be offered to Year 7 students:

Year 7 students*

dTpa vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (whooping cough) as a single dose

varicella vaccine (chickenpox) as a single dose; and

human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in a 3-dose schedule at 0, 2 and 6 months (students who

commence HPV vaccination in Year 7 but do not complete the course may be offered catch-up

doses at school in Year 8)

* The Parent Information Kits contain a consent form, information sheet and privacy statement that

details how personal information will be collected, stored and utilised.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their

child, parents/guardians are advised to:

read all the information provided

complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their

child to receive

return the completed consent form to their child’s school

ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school

Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health

website at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses

throughout the year where possible.

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits

and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record the

student’s information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and (for female students only) link to the

National or State Cervical Screening Program.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Welcome Year 7

to our Sport Program

Firstly, I would like to thank the parents and carers of our Year 7 students for providing

their daughters and sons with the School Sport Uniform.

The students really look great, like they are ready for physical activity when they are in uniform. Unre-

stricted movement is obviously important during sporting activities.

Please ensure students do not wear their sport uniform to school. This often leads to forgetting their

change of clothes (school uniform) and given that sport lessons are early in the day, students are then

left to wear sweaty and sometimes a dirty sport uniform for the remainder of the day.

The sport that we have started with is volleyball and this program will run for about five weeks, then we

will move on to touch football. In term two we hope to begin sport off campus so if the $50 sport fee

could be paid by the end of Term 1 this will ensure your child can participate in a "cost " sport next term.

I trust your daughter/son is enjoying their high school sport experience. If there are any questions or

concerns regarding this program, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Kath Bear

Safety First

Parents, carers and students are reminded not to use

the staff car park for dropping off or picking up their

children, unless using the disabled parking bays.

Our car park is very congested, especially on rainy days directly

before school begins and after school finishes. Parking is available at the

front of the school for safety and a covered walkway for students’ conven-

ience leads from the bus bay into the grounds.
