$$Introduction*The$high$school$years$and$the$developmental$stage$of$“Adolescence”$are$exciting$times,$full$of$self'discovery$and$burgeoning$independence.$$These$years$can$also$be$challenging.$$The$staff$and$leadership$at$Woodside$High$School$recognize$the$successes$and$the$obstacles$of$this$time$of$life$and$education.$$To$support$our$young$Wildcats$as$they$navigate$high$school$and$adolescence,$Woodside$High$School$offers$many$services.$$This$handbook$provides$detailed$information$regarding$the$support$services$available,$which$students$are$eligible,$and$how$students$and$parents$can$access$services.$$8*Conditions*of*Student*Success$$In$2011,Woodside$High$School$adopted$the$8$Conditions$of$Student$Success$as$the$Expected$School'wide$Learning$Results$(ESLRs).$$The$8$Conditions$of$Student$Success$are$the$result$of$research$conducted$by$the$Quaglia$institute,$which$has$found$that$these$Conditions,$when$used$to$direct$the$development$of$education$experiences,$prepare$students$to$“strive$for,$and$fulfill$their$academic,$personal,$and$social$promise”$(Quaglia$Institute$for$Student$Aspirations).$$These$8$Conditions$fall$into$three$guiding$principles,$as$follows:$$$

Aspirations&Days&Aspirations&Periods&Four$times$each$year$Woodside$High$School$has$an$Aspirations$Day.$$On$each$Aspiration$Day,$classes$engage$in$various$community'building$activities$that$support$and$develop$the$8$Conditions$of$Student$Success.$&

Academic&Supports&Tutoring*The&Den&The$Den$is$an$after$school$homework$and$tutoring$space$where$students$can$sit$in$collaborative$study$groups$supported$by$teachers,$tutors,$and$other$students.$$Located$in$the$Multi'Use$Room,$the$Den$is$open$to$all$students$on$a$drop'in$basis$every$Monday,$Tuesday,$and$Thursday$from$3:20'4:30.$$Computers$are$available$for$student$use$and$light$snacks$are$available$to$all$students$who$attend.$$Math&Tutorials&In$addition$to$the$tutoring$available$from$WHS$math$teachers$in$the$Den,$WHS$Math$Teachers$are$available$across$campus$to$tutor$students$every$Thursday$after$school.$$Students$can$receive$help$in$room$F'22$for$AP$Calculus$AB$and$in$room$F'1$for$Algebra$I,$Geometry,$and$Algebra$II.$$$Quiet&Study&The$WHS$Library$is$open$and$staffed$by$instructional$aides$every$Monday$through$Thursday$after$school$from$3:30'5:30pm$for$any$student$looking$for$a$quiet$place$to$study.$

Academic*Advancement*Summer&Math&Acceleration$WHS$offers$a$Math$Acceleration$program$for$students$wishing$to$accelerate$one$year$in$Geometry$over$the$summer.$$Math$Acceleration$offers$one$full$year$of$Geometry$taught$by$WHS$math$teachers,$over$the$six'week$summer$session.$$After$successful$completion$of$the$Math$Acceleration$course,$the$student$enrolls$in$Algebra$II$or$Algebra$II/Trigonometry.$Math$Acceleration$courses$are$available$by$application$and$require$current$math$teacher$recommendation.$$Applications$are$available$from$guidance$counselors$and$from$math$teachers.$$AP&Calculus&Bootcamp&A$short$summer$session$for$students$prior$to$entering$AP$Calculus$A/B$in$the$fall.$$ASAP&Bootcamp&ASAP$refers$to$Advanced$Standing$(AS),$Advanced$Placement$(AP),$and$Advanced$courses$offered$at$WHS.$$ASAP$Bootcamp$is$a$targeted$outreach$for$students$newly$enrolled$in$ASAP$classes$or$planning$to$pursue$advanced$coursework$in$the$near$future.$$9th*Grade*Transition*Compass&Compass$is$a$4'week$summer$transition$and$remediation$program$available$for$incoming$9th$grade$students$who$are$pre'selected$based$on$academic$measures,$including$standardized$test$score$results.$$$ALearn&ALearn$is$a$summer$enrichment$program$for$incoming$9th$grade$students$who$will$be$entering$Geometry$in$the$fall.$$ALearn$provides$an$intensive$review$Algebra$I$and$a$preview$of$math$skills$required$for$Geometry.$$$Aspirations&Advocate&The$Aspirations$Advocate$is$a$credentialed$WHS$staff$member$who$is$responsible$for$mentoring$9th$grade$students$identified$as$academically$at'risk.$$Students$are$identified$over$the$summer$and$in$the$first$semester$of$high$school$through$academic$and$behavioral$measures.$$

Academies*WHS$offers$two$Academies,$or$Small$Learning$Communities,$for$10th$through$12th$grade$students.$$Students$apply$during$their$freshman$year$to$be$accepted$into$one$of$the$Academies$and$remain$in$the$Academy$for$three$years.$$Students$in$the$Academies$take$four$classes$with$their$Academy$cohort$and$two$or$three$classes$outside$of$the$Academy.$$Academies$offer$weekly$tutorials$with$Academy$teachers$for$students$enrolled$in$that$Academy.$$Both$Academies$offer$a$unifying$theme$across$all$four$content$classes,$plus$relevant$field$trips$and$partners$with$career$mentors$from$the$community$in$their$junior$years.$&Business&Technology&Academy&The$theme$of$the$Business$Technology$Academy$(BTA)$is$business$and$computers.$$Students$in$the$BTA$enroll$in$the$following$four$courses$within$the$BTA:$English,$History/Social$Studies,$Mathematics,$and$a$computer$elective$course.$$Green&Academy&The$theme$of$the$Green$Academy$is$the$environment$and$conservation$issues.$$Students$in$the$Green$Academy$enroll$in$the$following$Green$Academy$courses:$English,$History/Social$Studies,$Science,$and$a$Career$Technical$Education$elective$course$(Environmental$Horticulture$in$10th,$Water$in$11th,$and$Sustainable$Design$in$12th).$*College*Preparation*AVID&AVID$is$a$skill'building$program$for$students$who$will$be$the$first$in$their$families$to$attend$college.$$Students$apply$for$AVID$during$their$8th$grade$year$and$take$AVID$as$one$course$in$their$class$schedule$each$year$of$high$school.$$AVID$offers$college$preparation$and$supports$through$the$teaching$of$study$methods,$test$preparation,$and$college$visits.$*BUILD&(Businesses&United&in&Investing,&Leading,&and&Development)&BUILD$is$a$community'based,$after$school,$college'preparatory$program$for$9th$through$12th$grade.$$During$the$9th$grade$year,$students$also$enroll$in$a$BUILD$class$at$WHS.$$Students$apply$for$BUILD$during$their$8th$grade$year$and$participate$in$the$program$throughout$high$school.$*Revolution&Prep&Revolution$Prep$is$a$company$that$provides$SAT$and$ACT$test$preparation$for$a$fee.$$Classes$are$offered$on$WHS’s$campus$and$online.$$

Credit*Recovery*Summer&School&Summer$School$is$available$at$WHS$for$students$in$need$of$remediation$in$core$content$areas$(English,$History/Social$Studies,$Math,$Science).$$There$are$two$three'week$sessions$in$summer$school,$with$each$session$the$equivalent$of$one$semester$(5$credits)$of$course$work.$$Summer$School$has$limited$spaces$available$and$the$district$office$staff$determines$the$number$and$priority$for$Summer$School$spaces$each$year,$with$priority$going$to$those$students$who$are$furthest$behind$in$credits.$$Summer$School$classes$are$selected$by$guidance$counselors$and$students$during$the$individual$meetings$to$plan$courses$for$the$following$year.$$Cyber&High$Cyber$High$is$an$online$recovery$program,$purchased$by$WHS$and$the$district$office$for$WHS$students.$$Students$who$have$earned$an$F$in$a$required$course$may$apply$to$take$the$course$online.$$Students$who$have$earned$a$D$in$an$a'g$required$course$and$are$otherwise$eligible$for$the$UC/CSU$a'g$requirements$may$also$apply$to$repeat$that$course$through$Cyber$High.$$Students$may$request$Cyber$High$applications$from$their$guidance$counselors.$$Note:&Cyber&High&does&not&meet&NCAA&requirements&for&those&students&who&hope&to&play&collegiate&sports.&&Students&hoping&to&play&collegiate&sports&should&discuss&their&credit&recovery&options&with&their&guidance&counselors.&$$STAT&JobTrain$(in$Menlo$Park)$offers$free$courses$in$their$STAT$(Success$Through$Academics$and$Training)$program.$$Courses$offered$include$Digital$Multimedia,$Culinary$Arts,$and$Green$Jobs$Green$Life.$$All$courses$offered$can$be$counted$towards$elective$credits$for$graduation$at$WHS.$$Applications$for$the$STAT$program$are$available$from$guidance$counselors.$$Adult&School&Concurrent&Enrollment&The$Sequoia$Union$High$School$District$Adult$School$offers$concurrent$enrollment$classes$for$credit$recovery$for$Woodside$High$School$students$who$are$16$years$or$older.$$Concurrent$enrollment$applications$and$application$instructions$are$available$from$guidance$counselors.$&Community&College&Concurrent&Enrollment&High$School$students$may$enroll$at$local$community$colleges$for$free$and$can$be$used$towards$required$or$elective$credit$for$graduation.$$Concurrent$enrollment$applications$and$application$instructions$are$available$from$guidance$counselors.$

Personal/Social&Supports&Positive*Behavior*Reinforcement*Student&of&the&Week&Each$week$two$students$are$selected$from$among$nominations$submitted$by$teachers$for$students$who$have$demonstrated$the$8$Conditions$of$Student$Success$and$made$a$positive$contribution$to$the$Wildcat$community.$$Students$of$the$Week$are$recognized$on$the$school'wide$announcements,$through$school$press$releases,$and$receive$an$award$recognition.$$Student&Athlete&of&the&Week&Each$week$two$or$more$Student$Athletes$are$recognized$for$their$commitment$to$sportsmanship$and$to$excellence$in$his$or$her$sport.$$Students$are$nominated$by$coaches$and$selected$by$the$Athletic$Director,$are$recognized$through$the$school'wide$announcements,$through$school$press$releases,$and$receive$an$award$recognition.$$Distinguished&Scholars&Students$with$grade$point$averages$(GPAs)$of$3.0$and$above$are$recognized$with$a$certificate$each$semester.$$Students$with$GPAs$above$4.0$are$recognized$on$the$Principal’s$List.$$Students$with$GPAs$between$3.5$and$3.99$are$recognized$on$the$Honor$Roll,$and$students$with$GPAs$between$3.0$and$3.49$are$recognized$on$the$Merit$Roll.$&Personal*Development*and*Counseling*Counseling&&&Advocacy&for&Teens/Adolescent&Counseling&Services&(CAT/ACS)&CAT/ACS$offers$WHS$students$individual$and$group$counseling$services$provided$by$trained$and$supervised$intern$therapists.$$Students$are$referred$for$CAT/ACS$services$through$their$guidance$counselors.!&Alternative&to&Suspension&CAT/ACS$and$Acknowledge$Alliance$counselors$provide$counseling$sessions$for$students$in$lieu$of$up$to$three$days$of$suspension.$$Students$are$referred$by$AVPs$following$a$behavior$incident,$at$the$time$that$the$suspension$would$be$assigned.$$Acknowledge&Alliance&The$Acknowledge$Alliance$provides$counseling$on$campus$for$students$who$have$transitioned$from$county$juvenile$correctional$facilities$back$into$the$comprehensive$high$school$setting.$&Outlet&Outlet$is$an$on'campus,$confidential$support$group$for$LGBTQI$Students.$$The$group$meets$after$school$and$is$supported$by$a$supervisor$from$the$CAT/ACS$program.$

Physical*Health*&*Wellness*Health&Office&WHS$has$a$full'time$Health$Aide$to$support$students$with$health$needs$during$the$school$day$and$to$provide$assistance$and$referrals$for$off'campus$health$needs,$including$help$with$enrolling$in$MediCal$or$referrals$for$services$at$Sequoia’s$Teen$Health$Center.!*District&Nurse&A$nurse$with$the$district$office$is$available$at$WHS$two$days$per$week$to$assist$students$and$families$needing$referrals$and$assessments$related$to$physical$health,$including$vision$screening.$*Students*Offering*Support*(S.O.S.)*Freshman&Transition&Program&The$Freshman$Transition$Program$builds$a$welcoming,$safe,$and$caring$community$by$organizing$each$9th$grader$into$a$small$team$with$a$trained,$upper'classman$peer$leader.$$Freshmen$meet$with$their$peer$leader$every$two$to$four$weeks$through$March$of$their$freshman$year$for$structured$activities.$$$&Safe&School&Ambassadors&(SSA)&SSA$is$a$national$violence$prevention$program$that$trains$students$to$intervene$when$they$notice$bullying.$$Students$sign$up$to$become$Safe$School$Ambassadors$at$any$point$during$high$school,$or$can$be$recommended$to$the$SSA$facilitators.$$Students$participating$in$SSA$complete$a$two'day$training$and$meet$every$Tuesday$at$lunch$to$review$anti'bullying$strategies$and$discuss$any$current$issues$of$bullying$on$campus.$&Peer&Conflict&Mediation&Conflict$Mediation$provides$a$safe$and$confidential$environment$for$students$to$resolve$conflicts.$$Peer$Conflict$Mediators$are$trained$in$the$mediation$process$and$assist$students$to$resolve$conflicts.$$Kids&Learning&Empathy&&&Respect&(KLEAR)&KLEAR$is$an$alternative'to'suspension$program$that$provides$educational$session$for$students$who$have$been$identified$for$bullying$behavior.$$Students$referred$to$KLEAR$attend$evening$sessions$with$their$parents$to$learn$positive$communication$and$ways$to$manage$anger$and$conflict.$$!

Response&to&Intervention&(RTI)&The$Response$to$Intervention$Model$is$a$multi'level$system$of$identifying$and$providing$support$to$students$who$are$struggling.$$WHS’s$staff$implement$RTI$at$three$levels:$Primary$(or$universal),$Secondary,$and$Tertiary.$$The$primary,$or$universal,$level$of$intervention$is$the$high$level$of$instruction$and$curricular$supports$available$for$all$WHS$students.$$All$WHS$students$have$access$to$standards'based$instruction,$highly$qualified$teachers,$and$a$guidance$counselor$who$is$assigned$for$all$four$years$of$high$school.$$The$Secondary$level$of$intervention$includes$additional$supports$as$recommended$by$teachers$or$counselors$or$as$requested$by$parents$and$students.$$These$interventions$include$after$school$tutoring$and$many$of$the$available$personal/social$supports.$$The$Tertiary$level$of$intervention$is$for$students$for$whom$the$Secondary$interventions$have$not$been$sufficient.$$This$level$of$intervention$can$include$a$team$meeting$(such$as$a$Student$Study$Team$meeting)$and$other$more$targeted$interventions,$as$deemed$necessary$by$the$student,$parent,$teachers,$counselor,$and/or$AVPs.$$Students!or!parents!who!believe!they!are!in!need!of!additional!supports!should!contact!the!student’s!guidance!counselor!at!any!time!to!discuss!support!options!and!recommendations.!
