SUBJECT TASK How long you should spend completing these tasks ENGLISH Scheme: THE GOTHIC GENRE Task 1 Reading: Read the following extract from a gothic novel entitled Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the results of my labours. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet. It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out, when, by the glimmer of a half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a violent convulsion shook its limbs. How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how describe the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form? His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful? Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of pearly whiteness; but these features only formed a more horrid contrast to his watery eyes, that seemed almost the same colour as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health. I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room and continued a long time traversing my bedchamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep. Write a WHAT/HOW/WHY paragraph answering the following question: How has the writer made the monster sound frightening? Success Criteria: WHAT: select a quote which uses a device that the author has used effectively eg. alliteration. HOW: How has the writer used this method - think about what effect the author has created by using this method. WHY: why has the writer used this method for this effect? Does it teach you something or is it to highlight a key point? Task 2: Writing: Using the Frankenstein extract above as inspiration, write a story in which you come face to face with a supernatural being that looks frightening - eg. a monster, a vampire, a werewolf etc. Success Criteria: Use lots of adjectives to describe. Use ambitious punctuation to create suspense. Use a range of rhetorical devices such as facts and figures, alliteration and rhetorical questions. Task 3:

DT Task 1 Step 1: Find a piece of cardboard packaging around your house (the kitchen would be a great place to look!) Step 2: Start to carefully disassemble the box, making sure not to rip it Step 3: Start to invert the box (turn it inside out) and add your own designs to the blank side of the packaging as if you are using the box to sell your own product. Add relevant elements to your designs; such as controllers, characters from some games, the logo, a barcode, even some health and safety information etc. Step 4: Reassemble your box with your designs now on the outside adding glue to the tabs (the parts on the image below with curved edges).

Please spend approximately 1 hour on each task

On this diagram, the dotted lines resemble folds and the complete lines resemble cuts. Task 2 Create a mini version of the box you used to disassemble and reassemble earlier! For this, you might choose to take measurements and divide by 4, for example. Meaning, if the box was previously 20cm wide, it would now be 5cm. If you can, take photos of the process. For example, when you write your measurements, when you start to cut along the lines and when you start to stick your new mini-box together! Please email photos of your work to Mr Price: [email protected] You can also submit in person upon your return to school.
