One thing that I take away from that is how these acci- dents can touch any life at any time. A family can be changed forever within a second from a motor ve- hicle accident. That is the experi- ence I would like to bring to the 108 th Precinct. Some of them can’t be prevented. But one of my goals is having a strong DUI program, which is one of the key ways of pre- venting these unnecessary ac- cidents. It’s the equivalent of taking an illegal gun off the street,” spoke New Captain, John Travaglia from his heart, who has just taken over the 108 th precinct. It was his time serving with the NYC Highway Patrol checking into accident related injuries and injuries resulting in death, which convinced him about hav- ing a good DUI system in place. He inherited the 108 th precinct from Captain Brian Hennessy who ran the system highly efficiently and effectively. Captain Travaglia plans to make a few personal changes but says the precinct is really in great shape. “I’d like to focus, as Hennessy did, on property based crimes because that’s what affects this community most. I’ve had the opportu- nity to see the crime numbers in the precincts I’ve worked and property crimes, like stolen cars and theft is what face this region. The system Hennessy had in place does this well but I want to go forward and continue it.” Captain Travaglia started his career in the 105 th Pct in the Narcotics Division, and was promoted to Sergeant in the 113 th Precinct in Queens then moved onto the NYC Highway Patrol from 2000- 2010. He was then promoted to Captain. His last assignment was in the 114 th Pct in Astoria from February this year to the end of November. Prior to that he served as the Executive Officer in the 104 th Pct in Ridgewood for 3 and a half years from September 2010- Feb of this year. One of his favorite assignments was under the Highway Patrol, pro- viding dignitary protection. He was often called to assist many units within the police agencies and the dignitary’s state depart- ment, including the president and vice president when they came into our area. Said Captain Travaglia,“It was a fascinating time. During my ten years in Highway Patrol I was assigned to President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama and the President of Pakistan for several years when he came into the country, and even the Pope.” Most of his career, however, was spent here in Queens with experience in the Highway Patrol that took him to all five boroughs of NYC. His familiarity and expo- sure here is extensive and he is very excited to be assigned here for that reason. One of the main things he wants to get through to the public is his open door policy. He cannot serve the Precinct with- out knowing the problems in it. “The one message that I have for people here is that I am always available to review the complaints of the individuals. I need to know the problem. Too often in a com- munity, people complain about an issue that has never been reported. It’s important to contact your local representatives. While the community only learned thenight of the elections that Conley was step-ping down, he told the other members of theboard in advance. The board then took a voteto decide if they were going to continue withthe voting that evening. With a vote of over60% majority in favor to move forward withthe elections, they voted Patrick O’Brien intothe position. The bylaws of the board wereclearly followed and the outcry from thecommunity regarding the short notice of JoeConley stepping down is more likely due toa misunderstanding of the board’s process.

Quoted Joe Conley, “I’ve worked veryhard at trying to bring about change for thecommunity and better the community. I stillplan to serve. I volunteer in a lot of otheravenues and will continue to do things for thecommunity in my spirit of volunteering.”Some of Conley’s other volunteer projectsinclude: President of the Queens AdvisoryBoard and Eastern Regional Board for theAmerican Cancer Society, the Children’sCancer Fund, and the Gilda’s Club.

In the past 29 years serving with theBoard, Mr. Conley has done a lot of goodwork for the community. He’s been sensi-tive to issues that individuals brought inasking for help. He has worked diligently toserve individuals as well as globally in thecommunity, such as the zoning issues inMaspeth and Woodside. Under his time inoffice, the board partnered with the Salva-tion Army to start a 250-bed Veteran’sShelter on Borden Avenue. They estab-lished an HIV Treatment Center in LongIsland City, which provides clean needlesfor addicts to protect them, as well as to notspread the disease further. On 46th Streetand 40th they created the Plaza Program to

create spaces for people to enjoy beingoutdoors. The Group Home on 48th Streethelps adults being moved out of medicalinstitutions with their rehabilitation and re-introduction to normal society was alsocreated by the board.

Former Chairman Joe Conley says,“Over the years I made life-long friends inthis neighborhood and it has been a reward-ing journey. I am still going to be aroundserving the community with my friends. It’sbeen humbling the way the city has put somuch trust in my hands. It’s been a wonder-ful experience.”

“I want to thank Joe Conley for his de-cades of service on Community Board 2,”said New York City Council Majority LeaderJimmy Van Bramer. “Joe worked hard at hisjob – serving under many different adminis-trations. And he worked well with all of them.Joe cared about doing his job and doing itwell. I enjoyed working with him and wishhim nothing but the best.”

New Chairman, Patrick O’Brien has beenon the Board for 13 years and has been amember of the executive community for 8years as well as a respected and dedicatedmember of the board. If there were anyreason not to vote him in he wouldn’t havebeen voted in. Joe Conley fully supportsO’Brien and believes he will serve the com-munity well. Said fellow member DianeBallek, “As a member of Community Board2 for 21 years and one who has been involvedin many community events, I truly believethat Pat O’Brien is extremely capableand knowledgeable. He’s very able to assumeand handle the work in running the Board.”

“As an active resident of Sunnyside forover 50 years and as Officer and Director ofmany neighborhood associations, particu-larly United Forties Civic Association andCB2, I fully and completely endorse theselection of Patrick O’Brien as Chairmanand likewise, the slate of officers that wereelected last Thursday night at the CB2 meet-ing. Patrick and the new officers have a totalexperience level of dozens of years servingunder Joe Conley and know what’s neededin the neighborhood to serve with vast expe-rience, and be the likely candidates elected,”endorsed Don McCallian, President of TheUnited Forties Civic Association.

The Spirit Of Christmasby Rev. Neil Margetson

This past Thur evening, the Sunnyside Community came together tohonor the Spirit of Christmas in an event that was billed as The FourthAnnual Saint Nicholas Day Illumination and Carol Sing. Five areachurches sponsored the event: Queen of Angels, All Saints Church,Sunnyside Reformed Church, The Grace Fellowship and Christ LutheranChurch of Woodside.

It was a cold, crisp, clear night - a relief after days of freezing rain. Theevent began at Sunnyside Reformed Church, where nearly three hundredmen, women and children gathered to await the lighting of the evergreenthat grows next to the main entrance. The children helped hang Christmasornaments in the lower branches. At 7:00PM the event began withgreetings, prayers and a short homily about the Christmas Tree traditionfrom Rev. Neil Margetson, Rev. Joseph Jerome and Rev. Dr. JoshHollman. Then...to the accompaniment of many ooohs and aaahs, the treewas lit! It is truly spectacular this year and will be lit every night from nowthrough New Years, so if you missed the event, walk by and see the tree!

The whole group then processed down Skillman Avenue with apolice escort - singing acappella Christmas Carols until everyone arrivedat Queen of Angels, where there were more prayers, more carols andeven a visit from Santa Claus! On Father Brian Dowd’s signal thechurch’s Nativity Creche was lit, and was...truly...inspiring. And whenthe last notes of the last carol had faded away, everyone adjourned to theQueen of Angels Social Hall where there was plenty of hot chocolate andcookies for the young and the young at heart.

Everyone agreed it was the best one yet, but the pastors are alreadyplanning for next year and say they plan to outdo themselves!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2014THE WOODSIDE HERALDPAGE 8

Chairperson Patrick O’Brien said, “Conley’sbeen doing the job so well and for so long, wewere all shocked that he stepped down. He’sbeen in the community for a long time.” Mr.O’Brien lives in Long Island City within 4-5blocks of Sunnyside and Woodside and will dohis best to serve the community.

He doesn’t plan to change a lot of things inthe first few months. He plans to deal with thingsas they come and keep moving forward. “Theone thing I do want to take a look at is expandingthe electronic aspect of the board like the socialmedia. We put proper notice online but I want towork on the website for CB2. This has been aproject under way for awhile but I want to accel-erate the pace because the more we get theinformation out the more we can illuminate peoplewho have problems based on false information.”He’s also planning to attend more of the meetingsfor the School Board and Highway Transporta-tion. His hope is that the transition will be smoothand quick for the community’s sake.

Some of the accomplishments Mr.O’Brien has been most of proud of havebeen in his work with the City Services andPublic Safety Committee, which was instru-mental in Hunter’s Point in opposing agentlemen’s club there. It was virtually thework of the committee to get anothergentlemen’s club, Lucho’s Place, a verydisreputable establishment shut down. Many

(continued from page 3) complaints from the community of drugs, sex and prostitution was reported about theestablishment going on in their very streets. When the establishment’s lease was up thecommittee worked very hard to ensure theywere not able to renew the lease and whenthey tried to go somewhere else it was prettymuch the work of the committee to ensurethey could not move elsewhere. Mr. O’Brienwas very happy and proud about the work ofthe committee he was a part of their results.

Some of the diversity within SunnysideWoodside, Maspeth and Long Island City andare a community comprised of young profession-als, young families, senior groups, ethnicities, immigrants such as Irish, Tibetan, Pilipino, andAsians. “We are probably the most diverse boardin the country. It is a broad brush we have to use.Just take a ride on the 7 Train and you’ll hearlanguages and people from all over the world. That is the fabric of a good community. We needto reach out to all these communities to make surethey are heard and that they trust that problemswill get solved and if they have a problem theyknow where to go. I’m excited and interestedgoing forward,” said O’Brien.

For an emergency call 911 but for non-emer-gencies, calling 311 will provide a reference num-ber that is critical to getting a problem solved. Thepublic officials need that reference number fortheir files. Mr. O’Brien reiterated, “We willrespond but we need to know what the problem is.We need you to call the community board and giveus the 311 refer-ence number keepon file so it iseasier to lobby fora solution to theproblem.” Call thecommunity boardat 718-533-8773to report any indi-vidual issues orproblems you seein the community.
