Defender Of Children AwardIn selecting recipients of the

Defender of Children Award, theFirst Focus Campaign for Chil-dren noted leaders who introduced,co-sponsored, and voted for legis-lation to meet children’s needs. Inaddition, the organization consid-ered Members of Congress whodemonstrated extraordinary initia-tive by sponsoring hearings or gar-nering the support of their col-leagues to improve the health, edu-cational outcomes, and well-beingof children.

“Lots of politicians talk aboutkids’ issues, but few back it up,”said Bruce Lesley, president of theFirst Focus Campaign for Chil-dren. “Representative Crowley

delivered for kids.”As a member of the powerful

Ways and Means Committee,Crowley serves on the subcommit-tee on Human Resources, whichoversees the foster care system, child care, and other crucial childwelfare programs, and has cham-pioned economic policies like theChild Tax Credit to help workingfamilies and military families. ThisCongress, Crowley introduced theChildren First Act, legislation toincrease access to stable and af-fordable child care for low-incomefamilies. He also was a key authorof the Protect Our Kids Act of2011, which would create a na-tional commission to develop a

strategy to reduce child fatalitiesas a result of abuse and neglect.Crowley has also joined his col-leagues on a number of bills sup-porting children, including co-sponsoring the Foster CareMentoring Act, which helps statessupport quality mentoring pro-grams for children.

The First Focus Campaign forChildren is a 501(c)(4) nonprofitorganization affiliated with FirstFocus, a bipartisan children’s ad-vocacy organization. The Cam-paign for Children advocates di-rectly for legislative change inCongress to ensure children andfamilies are a priority in federalpolicy and budget decisions.

And The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth…by Sue Baldock

On a warm October Saturday, FatherJerome honored St. Francis by blessing thepets of Sunnyside/Woodside. Welcomedby soft music, pups were joined by a cat anddwarf hamster to receive the blessings in thebeautiful garden of All Saints’ EpiscopalChurch.

St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint ofanimals, may have been poor and small ofstature; but he inspired the church by takingthe gospel literally as he followed Jesus’teachings. He extended his love to all the

animals that he encountered. Canonized in1228, the church has been celebrating hislife, teachings and love of all God’s crea-tures annually on October 4th (or the closestweekend).

Father Jerome’s mass was like all eventsthat I have attended at his church, warm, spirited and brightened his smile. The petowners had the opportunity to share andrejoice in the love and comfort their petsbring. Large to small, black to white, all theanimals got along as they were blessedindividually. Emma-Louise, CharlesFrancis, Tashi, Boo Boo, Quenda, Argos,

Shadow, Cheech, Randy, Spike, Chico,Baby, Princess, Jackie-Lyn, Max, Lottieand all the other four-legged creatures thatattended left peaceful and content that thiswill be a special year for them.

by Sue Baldock

The third annual Taste of Sunnyside is coming to town, Monday October 15th. The priceof a ticket ($25) gets you into one of the year’s best events. Ending restaurant week in style, the Taste spotlights fine foods from Sunnyside and Woodside.

I have attended for the past two years and was surprised and delighted by all that ourarea has to offer. There are so many small restaurants that I wasn’t even aware of, likemy now favorite Mexican joint, where the Sangria fights to take top spot over theguacamole and Salmon specials. I am really looking forward to tasting what Sunnysidehas to offer this year!Join the neighborhood Taste of Sunnyside 3, Monday October 15th inthe Sunnyside Community Services Center (43-31 39th Street, just off

Queens Boulevard). Visit www.sunnysideshines.org or call theSunnyside Business Improvement District office at (718) 606-1800

Town Hall Meeting Congresswoman CarolynMaloney (D-NY) hosted her col-league, Congressman LuisGutierrez (D-IL), a leading cham-pion of immigration reform andthe DREAM Act, at a Congres-sional Town Hall meeting to dis-cuss immigration issues and theObama administration’s recentlyannounced Deferred Action forChildhood Arrivals (DACA) ini-tiative. The Town Hall was held atLaGuardia Community College inLong Island City .

Other featured speakers at theTown Hall included representativesof the American Immigration Law-yers Association; CUNY Citizen-ship Now; and the New York Im-migration Coalition. Immediatelyfollowing the Town Hall meeting,Representatives Maloney andGutierrez joined with Shah Amanat,

President of LaGuardia Commu-nity College’s student government, and two young students who areeligible for the DACA program, totalk with members of the newsmedia about immigration issues.

In remarks at the Town Hallmeeting, CongresswomanMaloney said the following:

“President Obama’s DeferredAction for Childhood Arrivalspolicy will enable certain peoplewho came to our country as chil-dren and meet key guidelines, simi-lar those included in the DREAMAct, to request temporary relieffrom deportation proceedings andto apply for work authorization. This is not amnesty; it’s not immu-nity. But it will provide an oppor-tunity for hundreds of thousandsof young people to step out of theshadows and participate fully in

pursuit of the American dream. Itis a terrific accomplishment thatwe should embrace. As we allknow, however, our immigrationsystem is broken, and more needsto be done. I am a strong supporterof the DREAM Act – which wouldprovide a pathway to citizenshipfor young people who, through nofault of their own, haven’t beenfully able to realize their dreamsand aspirations. But, unfortunately,we’ve had a tough time getting itthrough Congress, because whatwas a bipartisan cause for years isnow mired in partisan politics. Thisis a sad example of how legislativegridlock affects real lives.DREAMers represent our future. They are going to pursue their edu-cation, they are going to work hard, they are going to make a hugedifference for our country.”
