The entire show has been created to center around the 11 rural schools that served as the “roots” of Northside ISD.  The family-oriented event, which is free to the public, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each high school cluster, consisting of the middle and elementary schools that feed into the high school, have researched and developed an artistic representation that brings out the unique education that was provided during the early days of their rural school. In addition, performances by vocal and instrumental musicians, dancers, and theatre presentations will share some of the literature and culture of their founding communities. There will be three performance venues for performing artists, a large variety of food booths, and an exciting chalkfest. If you have never witnessed a chalkfest, come out and see how campus teams of artists “compete” with chalk and concrete for business scholarships. Due to the massive size of the art programs and the number of schools involved, only half of this historic project will be shown at Los Leones and the other half of the project will be shown at the Fine ArtFest to be held in April at the Northside Sports Gym. Los Leones is a partnership among the NISD Fine Arts Department, NISD Partnerships Office, and the NISD Museum. This year, Los Leones is a SA Tricentennial sanctioned event.  This year’s grand prize winner in the publicity contest is Megan Spruiell, a 12th grade student at Taft HS. Her winning art, titled “Ties that bind us” will be featured on the publicity poster and event t-shirt. Her art teacher is Stephanie Russell. Hatchett students deliver heartfelt gifts Students at Hatchett ES celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week by creating Valentine’s Day cards for strangers. Students discussed and learned about random acts of kindness as part of their Student Leadership buddy classes. Together, students brainstormed ways that they could show kindness to strangers and what it means to be kind to everyone. Cards were delivered to various locations across San Antonio including the Sorento Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, military patients at San Antonio Military Center, and the Methodist Children’s Hospital in hopes to brighten someone’s day. Students celebrate 100 days of learningA day later thanks to an ice storm in January, the 100th day of school in Northside was Feb. 7, and schools across the District celebrated the number 100 in hundreds of ways. Here are a few examples.

Brauchle ES Second grade students in Rebecca Folds’ class made 100 day hats, counted to 100 in a variety of ways, read stories about things that come in 100’s. Students were able to hold and examine a real 100 dollar bill and wrote what they would do if they had $100 to spend. Pictured wearing their 100 day hats are (front row, from l-r) Sophia Vela, Ariana Zuniga, and Ava Montemayor; (middle row) Naomi Ross, Maryah Montalvo, Alyssa Arguell; and (back row) Mark Johnson,Rebecca Folds, and Kelsey Dalby.

Powell ES Students and staff at Powell ES wore shirts with 100 items, created 100th day school posters, and dressed as if they were 100-years-old. During lunch, every 100th student was crowned a lucky winner and led the 100th Day of School parade. Pictured are the four campus winners: Noah Roque, kindergarten; Ava Gonzales, 1st grade; Elida Ramirez, 3rd grade; and Giankarlo Viva, 2nd grade.

Langley ES First grade students at Langley ES transformed from their six-year-old selves to 100-year-olds with gray hair, canes, and wrinkles in celebration of the 100th day of school. Pictured are the students from the classes of Jennifer Fyall, Lisa Ochoa, Dulse Villanueva, Alicia Arevalos, Traci Rhea, and Kelsee Perales.

Driggers ES Kindergarten students at Driggers ES celebrated the 100th day of school by taking part in a variety of activities such as organizing 100 yummy snacks to eat and decorating their shirts. The day concluded with the 100th Day of School Fashion Show where each child walked the runway modeling their 100th Day attire. Pictured are (from l-r) Zoe Garces, Brookelynn Schermann, Samuel SanMiguiel, and Lily Amezquita.
