April 9: The Press GangWe close our 45th season with a lively new group performing songs and tunes from Ireland on fiddle, accordion, and guitar. Based in Portland, Maine, The Press Gang fuses the talents of squeezebox player Christian “Junior” Stevens, fiddler Alden Robinson, flute player and vocalist Hanz Araki, and guitarist Owen Marshall. This youthful and energetic quartet blends skill and fluency in traditional Irish music with a curiosity and aptitude for other styles. The joy that they pour into playing music together is unmistakable and infectious. The result is a unique sound, at once energetic and sensitive, inno-vative and reverent. As American performers in the Irish tradition, they also bring a local perspective to the music, interspersing Irish melodies with tunes from Quebec, Scotland, Appalachia, and New England. Their creative arrangements are tempered with a musical sense of adventure, making each appearance spontaneous and fresh. Folkwords praises them for “outstanding musical expertise, blending of contrasting influences, and finely-balanced, integrated style … pure exhilaration for the ears.”http://www.pressgangmusic.com

Dear WHFMS Members and Friends,

For our 45th consecutive year we have been privileged to experience both new and well-seasoned performers through the efforts of our Booking Coordinator, Clyde Tyndale, who has engaged these talents via his extensive network of musical contacts.Volunteers are the heart-blood of this organization, and I ask you to join me in extending our appreciation to those who make these evenings possible. Izja Lederhendler, our newest member, oversees the setup of the hall with help from Tim Radford, Chris Polloni, Steve Chalmers, Jacek Sulanowski, Ron Nunes and Don Abt. Arden Edwards coordinates refreshments, aided by Robin McIntyre, Sharon Nunes, Sandy Abt and many unheralded contributors of tasty comestibles. The publicity team, consisting of Margaret Sula-nowska, Jan Elliott, Chris Polloni, Sharon Nunes, Robin McIntyre, Steve Chalmers and Jacki Forbes, spreads the word of upcoming concerts by many and diverse means. Deborah Siegal continues to MC performances in her inimitable manner and also arranges for performer housing. Our treasurer, Deborah Winograd, keeps the organization financially liquid and cheerfully distributes checks to our performers, as well as helping in many others ways at concerts and behind the scenes. Margaret Sulanowska, our Secretary, faith-fully records meeting minutes and endeavors to keep the president on task.

Jacek Sulanowski, President
