“THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, ONLY LESSONS.” Author Unknown, Foundations II, Doorways published by the Noel Group.
In my opinion, one thing we don’t do enough of in 4-H is take time to celebrate
our mistakes. We take plenty of time to recognize first place finishes, blue
ribbons, and award selections, but celebrating our mistakes gets left out.
4-H members have the unique opportunity to try new things, explore their
interests and push their own personal boundaries. There are times when
things go right, lessons are learned and goals are achieved. In this case, we
have every reason to celebrate and we should.
There are also times when things don’t go right or a mistake was made that led
to a member not achieving their goals—but they may still learn valuable
lessons. Often times these occasions are not usually celebrated in the same
way as successes. But are the lessons learned any less valuable to our
members?
Parents and leaders— in this new 4-H year I challenge you to allow your
members to try things and allow them to make mistakes. Then, instead of
correcting them or finishing the project, help them discover the lessons that
can be learned.
Members—I challenge you to try at least one new project or activity that you
may not be completely comfortable with. You may make a mistake or two, but
learning from this experience is a valuable lesson that will help you as you grow
into adults.
4-H is an opportunity for members to practice “real life” in a safe environment.
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity and celebrate your
mistakes.
Sincerely,
Chris Viau Wood County 4-H Youth Development Educator
P.S.—I was going through old files and came across this article I wrote in 2011. I feel it rings true today and wanted to share it again.

CLUB OFFICER TRAINING
SHOOTING SPORTS ORIENTATION The Central Wisconsin 4-H Shooting Sports season is about to begin! The 4-H Shooting Sports program teaches youth lifelong skills in a safe and friendly learning environment. We focus on safety and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment, but never forget the fun!
The orientation meeting is set for Sunday, December 2nd, at the Central Wisconsin Sportsmen's Club, 11841 Stadt Rd., Marshfield. An open house will begin at noon, allowing youth and their families to talk with instructors, browse equipment, and become familiar with the facility. The official meeting will begin at 1:00. Meeting attendance is required. This is how you register for the program and select the best practice times for your family. There will be six practices from January through March for archery, rifle, and pistol. Shotgun practices will be held during June and July.
Archery, air rifle, air pistol, .22 rifle, .22 pistol, and shotgun instruction are all available. Participants are not required to own their own equipment. The program has loaner and rental equipment available.
This program is open to 4-H youth members in Wood, Clark, and Marathon Counties that are at least 8 years old and in 3rd grade. To participate in powder-burning activities, youth must be at least 12 years old and be graduates of hunter safety.

Each year, clubs are required to participate in annual leader training in order to maintain their chartered status. Trainings are targeted towards adults and older youth leaders - not just general leaders. We welcome and encourage all leaders to participate, learn, and help make their club the best it can be.
This year’s mandatory leader training, “All Together, Not All the Same,” will be held on Monday, December 17, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The location is still being confirmed. Watch your email and check our Facebook page for final details. To make the most of the training, we suggest that you have 2-4 members from your club attend.
Contact the UW-Extension office to RSVP: [email protected] or 715-421-8439.

Essential Elements of Youth Development Training
Belonging, Independence, Generosity, and Mastery are the Four Essential Elements of Positive Youth
Development. Understanding these essential elements will help you in your role as a 4-H volunteer or
youth leader.
You will learn about each essential element in relation to youth of different ages and stages, from
kindergarten through high school. You’ll get ideas for improving your 4-H program by paying attention
to these essentials.
The training modules are available through 4HOnline and are appropriate for both adult and youth
leaders. To register, log into your 4HOnline profile and then click on “Trainings” at the top of the page.
Each module is 7-10 minutes long, and you can complete them at your own pace.

4-H INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES Have you ever thought about traveling abroad? Are you interested in learning
about other cultures and lifestyles? Would you like to make international
connections?
If you said yes to any of the above questions, then consider participating in the
Wisconsin 4-H Summer Homestay Program in 2019! Every summer, WI 4-H
members have the opportunity to stay with a host family for one month in Costa
Rica, South Korea, Finland, or Japan. They get the opportunity to learn more
about another culture, share their own culture, enhance their confidence and communication skills, as
well as build lifelong relationships across the globe! So, why not enjoy a life changing experience that will
help you grow and gain a stronger global awareness?
This opportunity gives youth the chance to travel to a new country and experience a total cultural
immersion program by living with volunteer host families. Participants will experience all aspects of their
daily life to best understand their new host culture. The program is run through WI 4-H and States 4-H,
which have a network of international partners to plan enrichment activities for the delegates abroad,
such as cultural excursions, summer group camps and more. Youth are chaperoned by adult volunteers
who stay with other host families in the country during the exchange for support or assistance.
For more information visit https://wi4hinternational.org/homestay/ or contact Wisconsin 4-H
International Programs at [email protected] or call us at 608.262.2491. We look forward
to hearing from you soon, so we can help you start YOUR once in a lifetime experience!
Applications are due November 20th.

Have you met ALICE? You probably already know ALICE without realizing it. ALICE lives in Wood County -
in every township, village, and city. ALICE is all ages, and is every race and ethnicity. We see ALICE every
day – hard workers who play a critical role in our economy, yet aren’t always able to make ends meet.
ALICE is ringing up our purchases, servicing our cars, serving our meals, and caring for our young and our
elderly, and more.
ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.
The United Way is tracking ALICE - those households that earn
income above the Federal Poverty Level, but less than enough to
cover the basics. In 2016, 24% of households in Wood County were
ALICE households.
For more information, please see the ALICE Report 2018 at
www.usawac.org/alice.
Why are you reading about this in Youth Connections?
Because it affects families who are in 4-H now or who may be
interested in joining. The affordability factor is real. With one in
four households right here in Wood County barely getting by, a
few dollars may be all that is preventing youth from joining the
club or participating in a project meeting, the club trip, or camp. I
encourage you to start a conversation in your club – how can your
club support and welcome ALICE youth and families?

Submitted by Jerald “Jer” Lang
On July 31st, chaperones Jerald Lang and Susan Miller
took down 27 Wood County dairy youth and 39 head
of Dairy Cattle to the Wisconsin State Fair Junior Dairy
Show. Everyone was put to work immediately washing
cattle, putting bedding pack down, setting up the
wonderful display and the many decorations and all
new signs were made above the cattle and on the
floor, which really turned out very nice, setting up and
organizing the tack room, setting up the new
educational display plus getting all the cattle checked
in. This took the complete day and even part of
Wednesday. Wednesday was a practice day for herdsmanship right up to 10:00 p.m. The night crew of
four take over at 10:00 p.m. and go to 5:00 a.m. when the wash crew starts in. Herdsmanship starts
around 8:00 a.m. and runs till 10:00 p.m. every day so the kids must keep everything pretty sharp looking
at all times, and they did the entire six days we were there. Was it perfect, close. We had many
compliments on how well our exhibit was and yet we did not place in herdsmanship plus we did not place
with our educational display either.
Thursday was Showmanship day and all of our youth participated. It’s tough!
The following exhibitors made it through the first heat: Kenni Bores, Lizzy Behlen, Amanda Gehrke,
Aaliyah Borchert, Sara Dorshorst, Brett Thiel and Wyatt Haumschild. All classes average around 18 to 22
youth. Then it’s the final heats in each age group and in the 14 year old group Aaliyah Borchert came out
on top. In the very final contest all nine age groups go against each other. Aaliyah did a great job but
didn’t make the top but she did receive a $500 check for taking her age group.
Friday and Saturday was the big show with Danish Judging and the results are listed on the next page.
All of the kids tried very hard to do well in there classes. Were there disappointments, absolutely, but
that is the way it is.
Sue and I are very proud of all these young exhibitors, they are our future and they will do well. Taking
everything in perspective we would rate the group 90% taking orders and following through with it. We
all learn from mistakes and we had a few. Saturday evening we had a wonderful pizza party and 3 trips
down the giant slide. Sunday was tear down day and we arrived back at the fairgrounds around 4:30.
Looking forward to 2019.
